South Africa (SA) has progressive legislation enabling adolescents to access various sexual- and reproductive-health services (SRH) independently, without consent from parents or legal guardians. ...This article reviews the SA legislative framework for adolescent access to SRH interventions. It outlines the five approaches adopted in current legislation to address adolescents’ capacity to independently consent to specified health interventions, based on age, capacity and public policy requirements, or combinations thereof. Rather than subsume various health interventions under the umbrella of medical treatment, SA has separately legislated on many SRH interventions (e.g. HIV testing, contraceptives and terminations of pregnancy, among others). We identify strengths and weaknesses of the SA approach, and conclude with lessons learned from the SA experience which could inform discussion and debate on the most appropriate ways for countries to consider law reform that facilitates adolescent access to SRH services.
South Africa (SA) has one of the highest rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) in the world. It is also in the midst of a demographic transition in which the number of people aged >60 years is ...expected to double by mid-century. Despite the confluence of these two public health issues, there are no published studies on the epidemiology and risk factors for IPV in older SA women.
To provide a foundational understanding of IPV among women aged ≥50 years in SA.
This study used the first-ever nationally representative sample of women aged >49 (N=2 265) that includes data on physical, sexual, and emotional IPV. Both lifetime experience of IPV and IPV within the past 12 months were reported, as was the presence of controlling behaviours by the partner. Four multilevel logistic models and one multilevel linear regression model were fit to examine the demographic, developmental and structural correlates of IPV in women aged 50 - 95.
The lifetime prevalence rates for all types of IPV were slightly higher among older women than among women aged 15 - 49. Nine percent of respondents reported IPV in the past 12 months, and 35% reported at least one persistent controlling behaviour. Divorced/separated women and those who had witnessed IPV as a child had greater odds of reporting IPV. In contrast to the literature on younger women, education, race and wealth were not strong predictors of IPV in this sample of older women.
This study is the first of its kind in the SA context, and shows that IPV is a persistent threat for women across the lifespan. It suggests that IPV may manifest differently in older women compared with women of reproductive age, necessitating future qualitative and quantitative studies that examine the correlates, causes and points of intervention unique to this growing population.
We report the discovery and characterisation of a super-Earth and a sub-Neptune transiting the bright (

The host brightness and negligible activity combined with the planetary system architecture and favourable planet-to-star radii ratios makes TOI-1266 an exquisite system for a detailed characterisation.
We have searched for short periodicities in the light curves of stars with Teff cooler than 4000 K made from 2-minute cadence data obtained in Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite sectors 1 and 2. ...Herein we report the discovery of 10 rapidly rotating M dwarfs with highly structured rotational modulation patterns among 371 M dwarfs found to have rotation periods less than 1 day. Starspot models cannot explain the highly structured periodic variations that typically exhibit between 10 and 40 Fourier harmonics. A similar set of objects was previously reported following K2 observations of the Upper Scorpius association. We examine the possibility that the unusual structured light curves could stem from absorption by charged dust particles that are trapped in or near the stellar magnetosphere. We also briefly explore the possibilities that the sharp structured features in the light curves are produced by extinction by coronal gas, by beaming of the radiation emitted from the stellar surface, or by occultations of spots by a dusty ring that surrounds the star. The last is perhaps the most promising of these scenarios. Most of the structured rotators display flaring activity, and we investigate changes in the modulation pattern following the largest flares. As part of this study, we also report the discovery of 17 rapidly rotating M dwarfs with rotational periods below 4 hr, of which the shortest period is 1.63 hr.
South African law provides that children under 18 years old can self-consent to medical treatments and terminations of pregnancy.An article published by van Heerden et al. in the South African ...Journal of Child Health in 2020 found that children 12 years and olderwere able to give informed consent to medical procedures because they were able to make a treatment choice, comprehend information, weigh options and provide reasons for their decision. However, only children older than 14 years possessed actual understanding of more abstract concepts. This paper considers whether the law is consistent with empirical data on child capacity. It does so by examining the evolution of laws regarding child capacity, interrogating current legal standards on capacity and ultimately evaluating whether the law reflects current empirical knowledge. We conclude that the law on medical treatment is not in conflict with the findings of van Heerden et al. However, there is less synergy between law and empirical data regarding terminations of pregnancy for children under 14 years old.Parliament placed an emphasis on access to health services and did not want age or parental consent to act as a barrier to adolescentsgetting medical assistance; however, data show that children younger than 14 years old struggle with more complex and abstract medical choices. We suggest that the recommendations in the Choice Act for counselling in terminations of pregnancy by children under the age of 14 years need to be more fully operationalised through the issuing of regulations or a national policy.Keywords. consent; medical treatment; capacity; law.

For confirmation and planet mass measurement purposes, this was followed up with ground-based photometry, seeing-limited and high-resolution imaging, and precise radial velocity (PRV) observations using the HARPS and
Magellan
/PFS spectrographs. By combining the TESS data and PRV observations, we find the mass of L 168-9 b to be 4.60 ± 0.56

and thus the bulk density to be 1.74

times higher than that of the Earth. The orbital eccentricity is smaller than 0.21 (95% confidence). This planet is a level one candidate for the TESS mission’s scientific objective of measuring the masses of 50 small planets, and it is one of the most observationally accessible terrestrial planets for future atmospheric characterization.
In terms of the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act, consensual sex or sexual activity with children aged 12 - 15 was a crime, and as such had to be reported to the police. This was ...challenged in court in the Teddy Bear case, which held that it was unconstitutional and caused more harm than good. In June 2015, the Amendment Act was accepted by both the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces, and came into operation on the 3 July 2015. This article looks at the amendments to sections 15 and 16 of the Act and what the reporting obligations for medical professionals and researchers are in light of the amendments, as well as the duty to provide medical services and advice to adolescents.
We present the discovery of two new transiting extrasolar planet candidates identified as TOI-1296.01 and TOI-1298.01 by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The planetary nature of ...these candidates has been secured with the SOPHIE high-precision spectrograph through the measurement of the companion’s mass with the radial velocity method. Both planets are similar to Saturn in mass and have similar orbital periods of a few days. They, however, show discrepant radii and therefore different densities. The radius discrepancy might be explained by the different levels of irradiation by the host stars. The subgiant star TOI-1296 hosts a low-density planet with 1.2
