Aim
To investigate the association of unfinished nursing care on nurse outcomes.
Design
Systematic review in line with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guideline.
Data sources
...CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Medline, ProQuest and Scopus databases were searched up until April 2020.
Review Methods
Two independent reviewers conducted each stage of the review process: screening eligibility, quality appraisal using Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool; and data extraction. Narrative synthesis compared measurements and outcomes.
Results
Nine hospital studies were included, and all but one were cross‐sectional multicentre studies with a variety of sampling sizes (136–4169 nurses). Studies had low internal validity implying a high risk of bias. There was also a high potential for bias due to non‐response. Only one study explicitly sought to examine nurse outcomes as a primary dependent variable, as most included nurse outcomes as mediating variables. Of the available data, unfinished nursing care was associated with: reduced job satisfaction (5/7 studies); burnout (1/3); and intention‐to‐leave (2/2). No association was found with turnover (2/2).
Conclusion
Unfinished nursing care remains a plausible mediator of negative nurse outcomes, but research is limited to single‐country studies and self‐reported outcome measures. Given challenges in the sector for nurse satisfaction, recruitment and retention, future research needs to focus on nurse outcomes as a specific aim of inquiry in relation to unfinished nursing care.
Impact
Unfinished nursing care has previously been demonstrated to be associated with staffing, education and work environments, with negative associations with patient outcomes (patient satisfaction, medication errors, infections, incidents and readmissions). This study offers new evidence that the impact of unfinished nursing care on nurses is under investigated. Policymakers can prioritize the funding of robust observational studies and quasi‐experimental studies with a primary aim to understand the impact of unfinished nursing care on nurse outcomes to better inform health workforce sustainability.
Behavioral changes are common in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), however not as readily recognized as cognitive impairments.
The aim of this study was to analyze behavioral changes and its ...relation to disease characteristics, disability, and cognitive impairments in patients with MS.
This is a single-center cross-sectional study. A detailed neuropsychological examination, including the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale (FrSBe), the Beck depression inventory (BDI), and the Wuerzburg Fatigue Inventory for Multiple Sclerosis (WEIMuS) test, was performed. FrSBe results were correlated with disease characteristics, disability, and cognitive assessments.
66 patients were enrolled (mean age: 43.4 years; disease duration: 9.3 years; Expanded Disability Status Scale: 3.0). Up to one third of patients showed behavioral changes in at least one domain or the total score of the FrSBe. Patients were mildly affected with regard to cognitive functioning. Consistent correlation was found between behavioral changes and fatigue (WEIMuS) and depressive symptoms (BDI), but not with disease characteristics, disability, or cognitive functions. There was an increase of behavioral changes on all FrSBe scales in the current status compared to the retrospectively rated status before disease onset. Self- and family ratings with regard to current behavioral changes were similar.
Behavioral changes are common in otherwise mildly affected MS patients with up to one third being affected. In this patient cohort, behavioral changes occur largely independent of disease characteristics, physical disability, and cognitive functioning but correlate with both fatigue and depressive symptoms. Therefore, they should be tested specifically.
Patient safety, as a contemporary health care concern, must remain a priority for nurse educators. This on-line consultation, carried out within the RANCARE COST Action project, determined to ...establish how patient safety teaching is incorporated into pre-registration education of nurses across 27 countries. How nursing is regulated within countries was examined, along with national guidelines related to nurse education. HEIs were asked to provide details of pre-registration nurse training and how patient safety is taught within programmes.
The results confirm that the topic of patient safety is generally not explicitly taught, rather it remains a hidden element within the curriculum, taught across many subjects. Variation in how nursing is regulated exists across the countries also, with the professionalization of nursing remaining a challenge in some states. No guidelines exist at EU level which address how patient safety should be taught to nursing students, and as yet regulatory bodies have not put forward criteria on the subject. As a result individual HEIs determine how patient safety should be taught.
The WHO guidelines for teaching patient safety are currently underutilized in nurse education, but could offer a structure and standard which would address the deficits identified in this work.
•Approaches to regulation of nursing across European countries remains inconsistent.•Decisions around patient safety teaching to student nurses are taken at HEI level.•Patient safety content is rarely taught as an entity in itself but is integrated across subjects.•EU and national guidelines for teaching patient safety to nurses are needed.
Diabetic foot is a devastating complication of diabetes and represents the major cause of lower limb amputations in the western world in the 21st century. The World Health Organization predicts a ...dramatic increase in the number of diabetes patients over the next decade and by the year 2025, their number is expected to increase to 300 million.
Examine whether training leads to improving performance in the built-in self-care guidelines in patients with type 2 diabetes who were hospitalized with diabetic ulcers in the Orthopedic Rehabilitation Ward in Tel Hashomer between the years 2012-2013.
The study included 68 type 2 diabetic patients with diabetic ulcer aged 30-80 years, regardless of gender, who were hospitalized following a worsening ulcer. The research tools included demographic, medical and self-care diligence questionnaires and HbA1c measurements in a sugar balance report.
Results show significant change in eating habits, number of patient measurements performed during the week and treatment of the diabetic foot between the treatment group and the control group. In addition, support has been found to positively affect self-care response. The only variable where no benefit changes could be observed was the medicines consumption variable.
Prescriptive guidance, routinely performed, results in improvement in self-care among diabetic patients. Mentoring is enabling people to understand the importance of carrying out instructions received.
Aims
To investigate how nursing experts and experts from other health professions understand the concept of rationing/missed/unfinished nursing care and how this is compared at a cross‐cultural ...level.
Design
The mixed methods descriptive study.
Methods
The semi‐structured questionnaires were sent to the sample of 45 scholars and practitioners from 26 countries. Data were collected from November 2017–February 2018.
Results
Assigning average cultural values to participants from each country revealed three cultural groups: high individualism‐high masculinity, high individualism‐low masculinity and low individualism‐medium masculinity. Content analysis of the findings revealed three main themes, which were identified across cultural clusters: (a) projecting blame for the phenomenon: Blaming the nurse versus blaming the system; (b) intentionality versus unintentionality; and (c) focus on nurses in comparison to focus on patients.
Conclusion
Consistent differences in the understanding of missed nursing care can be understood in line with the nation's standing on two main cultural values: individualism and masculinity.
Impact
The findings call for scholars' caution in interpreting missed nursing care from different cultures, or in comparing levels and types of missed nursing tasks across nations. The findings further indicated that mimicking interventions to limit missed nursing care from one cultural context to the other might be ineffective. Interventions to mitigate the phenomenon should be implemented thoughtfully, considering the cultural aspects.

Hemianopic reading impairment is a consequence of a visual field defect to either the right or the left side and is characterized by an increased reading time and reduced reading performance. ...Depending on the side of the visual field defect, reading will be affected differently: Patients suffering from a visual field defect to the right side have noticeable difficulties in reading fluently with slowing. Patients suffering from a visual field defect to the left usually struggle to find the beginning of a line and read more fluently. It was suggested in the literature that changing the reading direction from horizontal to vertical may be a training strategy to reduce reading problems in patients with hemianopia. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of reading direction on reading speed in patients with left- or right-sided visual field defects and in healthy controls. Method: In 13 patients with hemianopia and in 13 age-matched controls, reading speed was calculated for texts in standard as well as in clockwise rotated orientation of 90, 180, and 270°. Results: In both groups, text rotation reduced reading speed compared to standard reading. Patients with left-sided hemianopia had the greatest reduction after text rotation. Patients with right-sided hemianopia had the smallest speed reduction in 90° vertically rotated texts. Conclusions: Text rotation has different effects in left- or right-sided hemianopia patients. For patients with left-sided heminanopia, rotation of the text may not be a helpful training strategy, for right-sided hemianopia vertical rotation of the text of 90° may be a beneficial training strategy to reduce reading deficits.

Endophytic streptomycetes have been isolated and characterized from several species of Nothofagus and other plants growing in the southern reaches of Patagonia. No endophytic streptomycete was ...obtained from any plant species studied in Northern Patagonia. However, from Southern Patagonia, biologically active Streptomyces spp. from several plant species were isolated. Each isolate, as studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), has small hyphae, some produce typical barrel-shaped spores in culture and each has some unique hyphal surface structures. Interestingly, although none has any detectable antibacterial killing properties, each has demonstrable killing activity against one or more pathogenic fungi including representative plant pathogenic organisms such as Phytophthora erythroseptica, Pythium ultimum, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Mycosphaerella fijiensis, and Rhizoctonia solani. The 16S rDNA sequences of the isolates were distinct from all other genetic accessions of Streptomyces in GenBank. However, isolate C-2 from Chiliotrichum diffusum (Compositae) is identical, in all respects, to isolate C-4 obtained from Misodendrum punctulatum (Loranthaceae). These results confirm that endophytic streptomycetes represent a novel source of biologically active microorganisms.

המחקר הנוכחי עוסק בנושא של תגובות מורים לשינוי במערכת החינוך בישראל. בעשורים האחרונים מאופיינת מערכת החינוך בישראל בשינויים רבים ובניסיונות, חוזרים ונשנים, של משרד החינוך לבצע רפורמה מהותית בבתי הספר ...בישראל. הרפורמות המוצעות נתקלות בהתנגדות עזה של ארגוני המורים. המחקר הנוכחי דן בקשר בין תכונתו של הפרט להתנגד לשינויים לבין עמדתו השלילית כלפי שינוי מוצע במערכת החינוך בישראל. מטרת המחקר הייתה לבחון את מידת ההשפעה של סגנונות מנהיגות שונים בהתאם למודל "הטווח המלא" (1994 ,Avolio and Bass ,(על עמדות מורים כלפי שינוי מוצע במערכת החינוך בישראל. בנוסף בדקתי האם מנהיגות מעצבת, הנחשבת לסגנון מנהיגות אפקטיבי (1994, Avolio & Bass ,(של מנהל בית הספר ממתנת את הקשר הקיים בין תכונת הפרט להתנגד לשינוי לבין עמדתו כלפי שינוי מוצע במערכת החינוך. החידוש העיקרי של מחקר זה הינו בבחינת ההשלכות של מנהיגות מנהל ביה"ס על עמדות מורים כלפי שינוי ועל הקשר בין מאפייני אישיות של מורים לתגובתם כלפי שינוי מוצע במערכת החינוך במחקר השתתפו 680 מורים ו- 75 מנהלים מבתי ספר, ברובם יסודיים, ברחבי הארץ. מורים התבקשו למלא שאלונים העוסקים בתגובתם לשינוי מוצע במערכת החינוך ושאלון הבוחן התנגדות לשינוי כמאפיין אישיותי. כמו כן התבקשו המורים להעריך את סגנון המנהיגות של מנהל ביה"ס. ניתוח הממצאים במחקר הנוכחי נערך ברמת בית הספר ממצאי המחקר תומכים בהשערות המחקר היינו, נמצא כי תכונתו של המורה להתנגד לשינוי קשורה באופן חיובי לעמדתו השלילית כלפי שינוי מוצע במערכת החינוך. כמו כן, נמצא כי סגנון המנהיגות של מנהל בית הספר מיתן את הקשר בין התנגדות לשינוי כתכונה ותגובות המורים לשינוי. ככל שהמנהל נתפש כבעל סגנון מנהיגות מעצב כך נמצא קשר חלש יותר בין התכונה לעמדה מסקנות המחקר תומכות בטענה כי תכונתו של הפרט להתנגד לשינויים בארגון קשורה באופן חיובי לעמדתו השלילית כלפי שינוי מוצע בארגון. מסקנה נוספת הינה כי סגנון המנהיגות של המנהל בארגון ממתן את הקשר בין התנגדות לשינוי כתכונה ותגובות הפרטים לשינוי בארגון.
The robustness of the between-language semantic priming effect was investigated in two experiments. In the first, we found that the effect is not affected by language expectation in a lexical ...decision task. In the second experiment, a reliable between-language effect was obtained when the subjects had to pronounce the target. For both experiments, there was equal between- and within-language semantic priming which was insensitive to SO A. The results suggest the effects of prime-language and target-language on semantic priming are additive, and are consistent with the amodal representation of concepts.
