The article is a review of a book by R. Macrides, J. A. Munitiz, and D. Angelov – Pseudo-Kodinos and the Constantinopolitan Court : Offices and Ceremonies, Farnham 2013 – on Pseudo-Kodinos’ Book of ...Offices. The comments focus on 1. the election of the patriarch of Constantinople, based on the first paragraph of chapter 10 of the Book of Offices ; 2. the unusual presentation of the pinax at the beginning of the reprinting of the text ; 3. and the meaning of some of the words used by Pseudo-Kodinos.
L’article tient lieu de recension de l’ouvrage publié par R. Macrides, J. A. Munitiz et D. Angelov sur le Traité des offices du Pseudo-Kôdinos (Pseudo-Kodinos and the Constantinopolitan Court : Offices and Ceremonies, Farnham 2013). Les remarques portent sur trois points : 1. L’élection du patriarche de Constantinople, d’après le premier paragraphe du chapitre 10 du Traité ; 2. La présentation singulière du pinax qui est donnée au début de la réédition du texte ; 3. La signification de quelques vocables employés par le Pseudo-Kôdinos.

In Greek liturgy, the same terminology is used to name the consecrated or eucharistic bread, used for the communion by the celebrant and the congregation during the liturgy, and the blessed bread, ...which is distributed by the celebrant to the congregation at the end of the liturgy. The first one has a strong symbolic meaning, the second is a simple substitute introduced to overcome the rarity of liturgical communion. These various names are discussed in the article, in the light of Georges Pachymeres’s History, where good examples to illustrate the point are found. A second topic is discussed next : the names of the containers where the eucharistic reserve was kept.
Dans la liturgie grecque, une même terminologie est utilisée pour désigner le pain consacré ou pain eucharistique, auquel le célébrant et une partie des fidèles communient au cours de la liturgie, et le pain bénit, qui est distribué par le célébrant à tous les assistants à l’issue de la liturgie. Le premier a une forte charge symbolique, le second est un simple succédané, introduit pour pallier la raréfaction de la communion liturgique. Ces divers noms sont examinés dans l’article, à la lumière des Relations historiques de Georges Pachymérès, qui offrent de bons exemples pour illustrer le propos. Un second sujet est abordé ensuite : la désignation des récipients où est déposée la réserve eucharistique.

L’éditeur des Relations historiques de Georges Pachymérès, dont la première partie parut en 1984 et la seconde en 1999, a relevé au fil des années les inadvertances, les erreurs et les insuffisances ...de sa publication. Il livre ici un ensemble de corrections, additions et commentaires qui sont susceptibles d’améliorer l’édition. Pour être plus aisément repérables, ces remarques sont classées dans l’ordre du texte, avec référence aux pages et aux lignes de chacun des quatre volumes. Elles portent essentiellement sur la traduction et l’interprétation du grec, plus incidemment sur l’établissement du texte ou l’annotation de la traduction.
The editor of George Pachymeres’s Relations Historiques, of which the first part was published in 1984 and the second in 1999, has over the years corrected the mistakes and shortcomings of his publication. Here he has gathered all of his corrections, additions and comments which may improve the edition. In order to make them easier to find, these remarks follow the order of the text, with page and line numbers of each of the four volumes. They concern mainly the translation and interpretation of the Greek, but also the textual edition and annotation of the translation.
L’Histoire de Nicéphore Grègoras est souvent invoquée comme un second témoin pour les événements du règne de Michel VIII Palaiologos et de son fils Andronic II. Il est clair cependant qu’il s’est ...inspiré pour l’essentiel de l’Histoire de son prédécesseur Georges Pachymérès, qu’à l’occasion il a mal interprété. Il importe dès lors de relativiser la valeur de ses informations et d’examiner au fond les renseignements supplémentaires qu’il semble procurer, sans d’ailleurs, à l’inverse, les rejeter tous a priori. À l’appui de la dépendance directe de Grègoras par rapport à Pachymérès, l’article présente trois sections narratives qui révèlent un parallélisme étroit et où les erreurs évidentes de Grègoras ne se justifient que par la complexité de son modèle et les erreurs d’interprétation qui peuvent en découler. Trois événements sont pris en considération et choisis intentionnellement pour leur éloignement dans le temps : la victoire de Pélagonia (1259), le second mariage d’Andronic II (1272), la visite d’Andronic II à l’exilé Jean IV Laskaris (1290).
The History of Nicephorus Gregoras is often cited as a second witness to the events of the reign of Michael VIII Palaiologos and his son Andronicus II. It is clear however that Gregoras mostly followed his predecessor George Pachymeres, whom he sometimes misunderstood. It is important to determine the value of his information and examine carefully any additional pieces of information he appears to provide ; if these cannot be verified, they should all be rejected from the outset. Demonstrating the direct dependence of Gregoras on Pachymeres, the article presents three narrative sections which reveal a strict parallelism and where obvious errors by Gregoras can only be explained by the complexity of his model and the resulting errors of interpretation. Three events have been chosen intentionally for their distance in time : the victory of Pelagonia (1259), the second marriage of Andronicus II (1272) and the visit of Andronicus II to John IV Lascaris in exile (1290).
The death of Michael VIII in December 1282 led to a drastic shift in ecclesiastical politics in Constantinople : Michael’s son and successor Andronicus II rejected the Union of Lyon and proclaimed a ...strict return to orthodoxy. The young emperor initiated the change but could not control the situation and took some more stringent measures. The restoration and the purge were achieved through four steps : 1. The dismissal of the patriarch John Bekkos (January 1283) ; 2. The deposition of metropolitans at the first synod of Blachernae which was not held, as usually stated, in the first but in the third week after Easter (between Monday, May 3 and Saturday, May 8, 1283) ; 3. The deposition, under the pressure of the Arseniats, of pro-unionist suffragan bishops and clerics at the synod of Atrammytion (Spring-Fall 1284) ; 4. The final sentence against John Bekkos at the second council of Blachernae (February-August 1285).
La mort de Michel VIII en décembre 1282 provoqua un revirement de la politique ecclésiastique à Constantinople : son fils et successeur Andronic II répudia l’Union de Lyon et proclama le retour à une orthodoxie stricte. Le jeune empereur enclencha le changement, mais il ne put maîtriser la situation et fut amené à prendre des mesures de plus en plus contraignantes. Quatre phases marquèrent le processus de restauration et d’épuration : 1. La destitution du patriarche Jean Bekkos (janvier 1283) ; 2. La déposition des métropolites au premier synode des Blachernes, qui, contrairement à la date traditionnellement retenue, ne se tint pas dans la première semaine, mais dans la troisième semaine après Pâques (entre le lundi 3 mai et le samedi 8 mai 1283) ; 3. La déposition des évêques suffragants et des clercs pro-unionistes, sous la pression des Arséniates, au synode d’Atrammytion (printempsautomne 1284) ; 4. La condamnation définitive de Jean Bekkos au second concile des Blachernes (février-août 1285).
Chronological anticipation is employed by George Pachymeres in his History as an historical process which introduces movement and separation in the narrative and thus breaks the monotony and ...linearity of the temporal framework. In addition, chronological anticipation gives a precious editorial indication by linking various events with one another – albeit in an imprecise and ambiguous manner – and provides information concerning the date of a given passage. Out of many examples, six have been chosen with the most pronounced characteristics, comprising both longer periods of time and larger sections of the History.
L’anticipation chronologique est utilisée par Georges Pachymérès dans son Histoire comme un procédé littéraire, qui introduit mouvement et rupture dans la narration et rompt ainsi la monotonie et la linéarité du cadre temporel. L’anticipation chronologique fournit d’autre part un précieux indice rédactionnel, en reliant les événements entre eux, fût-ce de manière imprécise ou ambiguë, et en informant sur la date de composition d’un passage donné. Sur un nombre important d’exemples, six cas d’anticipation sont retenus, qui présentent des caractéristiques plus prononcées, parce qu’ils embrassent à la fois une durée plus longue et une section plus large de l’Histoire.
Le monastère Saint-Michel de Sôsthénion apparaît aux 13e-14e siècles comme une institution religieuse importante. Il est désigné souvent sous la simple dénomination de Laure par Georges Pachymérès, ...qui le nomme à propos des séjours qu’y firent les patriarches Joseph et Jean Bekkos et à propos des deux patriarches Athanase, celui de Constantinople et celui d’Alexandrie. Grégoire Palamas, qui s’y réfugia en 1341-1342 pour fuir l’agitation de la capitale, situe le monastère sur l’autre rive, c’est-à-dire audelà de la Corne d’Or, tandis que l’historien le place dans l’Anaplous, terme qui désigne la rive européenne du Bosphore et équivaut ainsi à la précédente formulation.
The monastery of St Michael at Sosthenion appears in the 13th-14th centuries as an important religious institution. It is often mentioned under the simple name of Laura by George Pachymeres who speaks of it in connexion with sojourns there by the patriarchs Joseph and John Bekkos and also in connexion with two patriarchs named Athanasius, the one of Constantinople and the other of Alexandria. Gregory Palamas, who took refuge there from agitation in the capital in 1341-1342, situates the monastery on the other bank, that is, beyond the Golden Horn, whilst Pachymeres places it in the Anaplous, a term used for the European bank of the Bosphorus and therefore the equivalent of the former.
Les éditeurs de l’histoire de Georges Pachymérès ont admis implicitement l’authenticité de tous les éléments paratextuels de l’oeuvre : titre général (Relations historiques), division en treize ...livres, partage des livres en chapitres, énoncé des titres de chapitres. Mais l’analyse grammaticale et lexicologique de ces titres de chapitres, rassemblés d’une part dans un double pinax et dispersés d’autre part dans les marges des manuscrits devant le début de chaque chapitre, suggère que ces intitulés ne sont pas de la plume de l’auteur, mais d’un rédacteur postérieur. Le doute rejaillit dès lors sur l’authenticité de l’ensemble des titres, ainsi que sur une division originelle de l’ouvrage en livres et en chapitres, car l’histoire peut se lire comme un texte continu et sans coupure, auquel ces éléments n’apportent aucun supplément d’intelligibilité.
The editors of the history of George Pachymeres have implicitly accepted the authenticity of all the paratextual elements of the work : the general title (historical accounts), the division into thirteen books, the chapter divisions within the books, the titles of the chapters. However, grammatical and lexicological analysis of these chapter titles, gathered in a double pinax and dispersed in the margins of the manuscript at the beginning of each chapter, suggests that they do not come from the pen of the author, but of a later redactor. This casts doubt on the authenticity of all the titles, as well as the division of the work into books and chapters, for the history can be read as a continuous text whose intelligibility is in no way enhanced by these elements.

Albert Failler, Le roseau, le papyrus et le papier. - Le mot grec « papyros » peut désigner soit la plante aquatique qui pousse en particulier au bord du Nil soit le support ...d'écriture qui en a tiré son nom, qu'il s'agisse de la feuille de papyrus ou, surtout, du papier fabriqué grâce aux fibres de la tige. Dans les chapitres 32 et 33 du livre VI des Relations historiques de Georges Pachymérès, les éditeurs du texte ont, à tort, retenu le second sens (« papier ») au lieu du premier (« papyrus »).
The Greek word "papyros" is used to describe either the plant that grows on the Nile's banks, or the writing material that has taken its name from this plant, whether this be the papyrus leaf or the paper made from the fibres of the plant's stalk. In chapters 32 and 33 of Book VI of George Pachymeres' Historical, the editors of the text wrongly understood the word in its second sense ("paper") rather than in the first ("'papyrus").
The network of quotations and reminiscences underlying every work of Byzantine literature also gives the measure of the author's level of language and style, and that of his literary ambition. The ...History by George Pachymérès is a case in point. In his personal reflection as historian, he almost exclusively finds his inspiration in Classical Greek literature and mainly quotes Homer, sometimes Plato. Christian literature would be absent from his work if disputations, internal schisms and transcription of ecclesiastical documents did not bring with them quotations from Scripture and the Fathers. Albert Failler, Citations et réminiscences dans l'Histoire de Georges Pachymérès. — Le réseau des citations et réminiscences qui sous-tend toute œuvre littéraire byzantine mesure aussi le niveau linguistique et stylistique ou l'ambition littéraire de l'auteur. L'Histoire de Georges Pachymérès est une bonne illustration. Dans sa réflexion personnelle d'historien, l'écrivain s'inspire, de manière presque exclusive, de la littérature classique grecque et cite surtout Homère, accessoirement Platon. La littérature chrétienne serait absente de son ouvrage si les disputes et les schismes intérieurs ou les documents ecclésiastiques transcrits dans l'Histoire n'amenaient la citation de l'Écriture et des Pères. L'exposé se compose de trois chapitres, selon la triple série où on peut classer les citations et réminiscences contenues dans l'Histoire : Proverbes et locutions proverbiales, Littérature profane, Littérature chrétienne.
