La statue de Giordano Bruno dressée sur le Campo de Fiori, le procès de Galilée dont la mémoire est toujours présente à travers le théâtre ou les débats de l’Académie pontificale des sciences disent ...assez combien le destin de la Rome des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles a été négativement associé à celui de la science moderne et de son avènement conflictuel. Les études réunies dans ce volume, résultat d’un programme collectif de recherche sur la genèse de la culture scientifique européenne, entendent apporter une nouvelle contribution non seulement au dossier de la révolution scientifique en milieu catholique, mais plus largement à celui des relations que chaque société entretient avec les acteurs et la production du savoir et de la science. La focale mise sur Rome, comme milieu social spécifique, comme capitale de la catholicité et comme centre d’une monarchie pontificale en profond renouvellement entre XVIe et XVIIIe siècle, permet de discuter les paradigmes classiques d’une historiographie qui a trop hâtivement relégué le milieu romain à la marge de toute forme d’innovation savante. Il s’agit aussi d’ouvrir de nouvelles pistes de réflexions et de nouveaux chantiers sur les diverses configurations socio-intellectuelles au sein desquelles le travail savant a continué à faire de Rome un centre actif de travail et de production de savoirs.
The article reconstructs the 'cultural biography' of six scientific objects, that is the compound machines for the experimental physics owned by Antonio Leprotti, Archiater to pope Benedict XIV. ...Their material stability, their persistency in spite of time, of wear and tear, allows to follow in the course of time «the category they belong to ... the emotion and the judgment they inspire and the story they evoke», as «all historically-shaped data». These data are retrieved beginning with the «material culture» of the machines, that is their models, deterioration, maintenance, dislocation in space. Thus questioned, the objects talk. They tell the story of Leprotti's museum and cabinet and the ways he used them; they speak of the science performances displayed at the Roman university and substitute rotuli as a source for information on academic syllabuses. Looking at history of science from the machines' point of view, the author aims at providing evidence for a «new» actor on the science scene: the courtier machinist and those instrument makers hidden in Roman shadowy cloisters.

This article introduces some data regarding the teaching of mathematics in "La Sapienza" in the 17th century, with particular reference to the discipline's role in the statutes, the lecturers, the ...courses' programmes, the interest that Popes took in it. Specifically, it will focus on the changes that occured at the end of the 17th century, with regards to the development of the discipline and the improvement of a "scientific culture" in the city of the Pope.

dell''Archivio di Stato di Roma, l''articolo ricostruisce in dettaglio le vicende che condussero tra il 1746 e il 1748 ...all''istituzione delle cattedre di Fisica sperimentale e di Matematica superiore presso il pubblico studio romano de «La Sapienza » , nell''ambito della grande riforma dell''ateneo promos sa da papa Benedetto XIV. Il saggio, inoltre, documenta le circostanze in cui i padri Minimi di Trinità dei Monti, François Jacquier e Thomas Le Seur, vennero assunti in quella carica, oltre che la natura, l''oggetto e la fortuna delloro insegnamento.
Commentando i dubbi di un confratello nell’accettare la lettura di matematica alla «Sapienza » di Roma, nel 1618 Christopher Grienberger S. I. scriveva : «deve pur dire qualcosa essere il matematico ...del papa ! » . Abituato all’attenzione che il Collegio romano riservava alla disciplina, Grienberger non poteva credere ai suoi occhi. Nel
curriculum di studi dell’università di Roma la lettura di matematica aveva allora un ruolo più che mai marginale : limitato il numero delle cattedre, basso il livello dei salari, nessuna concorrenza per aggiudicarsi la cattedra. La situazione appare molto cambiata nel 1685, data del primo affollato concorso che Vitale Giordano vinse contro colleghi qualificati. L’articolo fornisce alcuni dati intorno all’insegnamento delle matematiche in «Sapienza » nel XVII secolo : la cornice istituzionale, i lettori, i programmi dei corsi. In particolare, sottolinea i mutamenti che interessarono l’insegnamento alla fine del Seicento in relazione agli sviluppi della disciplina e all’incremento della «cultura scientifica » nella città del papa.
