A case of nonocclusive mesenteric vascular insufficiency in a patient with congestive heart failure on digitalis and with arrhythmia is presented. The preoperative diagnosis was made through ...mesenteric arteriography. A course of treatment was followed which we believe prevented intestinal gangrene. This regimen includes measures to increase cardiac output, local pharmacologic agents to induce mesenteric vasodilatation, antibiotics, and oxygen. The viability of the intra-abdominal organs was demonstrated by laparotomy.

Seven hundred and seventy-two lactating mothers were studied from delivery for 1 year to select the best contraceptive method (oral drug, injected drug, or IUD) which did not affect lactation. Ten ...groups of mothers were studied, including 234 control subjects. The injectable progestational contraceptives caused an improvement in the amount of milk and its protein concentration, whereas the IUCDs did not influence the lactation pattern. Sulpiride was an ineffective contraceptive but a potent lactation stimulant. The side effects of each method (effects on milk yield, protein content and prolactin concentrations) were also noted; it was concluded that IUCDs are the ideal contraceptive method during lactation, with the use of a lactation stimulant when indicated.
A series of 94 central venous catheters was observed at removal for gross evidence of intraluminal or surface thrombus deposition. All those that were later found to have positive cultures had been ...noted to display thrombus formation, while catheters having negative cultures were usually free of thrombus. Devices made of a relatively nonthrombogenic material (ethylene acrylic acid) were also relatively free of bacterial contamination.
Between June 1986 and May 1989 35 children (18 boys and 17 girls) below the age of 12 years were surgically treated for hydatid cysts of the liver. Of the children 24 (68.5%) had a single cyst ...situated in either of the lobes of the liver, while the remaining 11 (31.5%) harboured more than one cyst. A uniform method of enucleation, partial cystectomy and external tube drainage was used in all of them. Small residual cavities were not drained but were kept open on to the surface of liver. Results showed that six patients (17.1%) had transient biliary discharge which resolved within 3-6 days, whereas in two children (5.7%) biliary drainage persisted for four, respectively six weeks following surgery. This also stopped spontaneously. The method we used in our patients was safe and effective.
Different methods for analyzing binary mixtures by using 2 wavelengths are reviewed. The absorbance ratio calculated at 2 wavelengths, not including the isoabsorptive point, was a quadratic function ...of relative concentration. The curve-fitting process using orthogonal polynomials was applied to obtain the quadratic equation. An absorbance ratio can be used as a rapid purity index for sulfacetamide sodium in the presence of sulfanilamide. Sulfacetamide sodium has been determined in eye drop preparations.
