Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are increasingly being scrutinized by the scientific community due to their environmental persistence. Therefore, the development of novel ...environmentally compatible and energy-efficient technologies for their removal is highly anticipated. In this work, a novel metal-free photocatalytic nanoreactor was successfully synthesized by anchoring carbon dots to hollow carbon nitride nanospheres (HCNS/CDs). The unique structure of these hollow nanospherical HCNS/CDs hybrids endowed them with a high population of reactive sites, while enhancing optical absorption due to internal light reflection. Simultaneously, the CDs served as “artificial antennas” to absorb and convert photons with low energy, due to their superior up-converting properties. Consequently, the HCNS/CDs demonstrated excellent photodegradation activities for the degradation of PPCPs under broad-spectrum irradiation. Remarkedly, 10 mg/L of naproxen (NPX) was completely degraded following 5 min of natural solar irradiation. It was further revealed that the O2•- played a significant role during the photocatalytic process, which could lead to the decomposition of NPX. The effects of natural water matrices and the degradation of trace PPCPs further supported that this photocatalytic system may be efficaciously applied for the remediation of PPCPs contamination in ambient waterways.

The widespread occurrence of the brominated flame retardant tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) makes it a possible source of concern. Our experiments suggest that TBBPA can be effectively transformed by ...the naturally occurring laccase enzyme from Trametes versicolor. These reactions follow second-order kinetics, whereby apparent removal rate is a function of both substrate and enzyme concentrations. For reactions at different initial concentrations and with or without natural organic matter (NOM), reaction products are identified using liquid or gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. Detailed reaction pathways are proposed. It is postulated that two TBBPA radicals resulting from a laccase-mediated reaction are coupled together via interaction of an oxygen atom on one radical and a propyl-substituted aromatic carbon atom on the other. A 2,6-dibromo-4-isopropylphenol carbocation is then eliminated from the radical dimer. All but one of the detected products arise from either substitution or proton elimination of the 2,6-dibromo-4-isopropylphenol carbocation. Three additional products are identified for reactions in the presence of NOM, which suggests that reaction occurs between NOM and TBBPA radical. Data from acute immobilization tests with Daphnia confirm that TBBPA toxicity is effectively eliminated by laccase-catalyzed TBBPA removal. These findings are useful for understanding laccase-mediated TBBPA reactions and could eventually lead to development of novel methods to control TBBPA contamination.
The malposition of central venous catheters (CVCs) may lead to vascular damage, perforation, and even mediastinal injury. The malposition of CVC from the right subclavian vein into the azygos vein is ...extremely rare. Here, we report a patient with CVC malposition into the azygos vein via the right subclavian vein. We conduct a comprehensive review of the anatomical structure of the azygos vein and the manifestations associated with azygos vein malposition. Additionally, we explore the resolution of repositioning the catheter into the superior vena cava by carefully withdrawing a specific length of the catheter.
A 79-year-old female presented to our department with symptoms of complete intestinal obstruction. A double-lumen CVC was inserted via the right subclavian vein to facilitate total parenteral nutrition. Due to the slow onset of sedative medications during surgery, the anesthetist erroneously believed that the CVC had penetrated the superior vena cava, leading to the premature removal of the CVC. Postoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the chest confirmed that the central venous catheter had not penetrated the superior vena cava but malpositioned into the azygos vein. The patient was discharged 15 days after surgery without any complications.
CVC malposition into the azygos vein is extremely rare. Clinical practitioners should be vigilant regarding this form of catheter misplacement. Ensuring the accurate positioning of the CVC before each infusion is crucial. Utilizing chest X-rays in both frontal and lateral views, as well as chest computed tomography, can aid in confirming the presence of catheter misplacement.
Soil salinization has seriously affected agricultural production and ecological balance in the Yellow River Delta region. Rapid and accurate monitoring of soil salinity has become an urgent need. ...Traditional machine learning models tend to fall into local optimal values during the learning process, which reduces their accuracy. This paper introduces Circle map to enhance the crayfish optimization algorithm (COA), which is then integrated with the regularized extreme learning machine (RELM) model, aiming to improve the accuracy of soil salinity content (SSC) inversion in the Yellow River Delta region. We employed Landsat5 TM remote sensing images and measured salinity data to develop spectral indices, such as the band index, salinity index, vegetation index, and comprehensive index, selecting the optimal modeling variable group through Pearson correlation analysis and variable projection importance analysis. The back propagation neural network (BPNN), RELM, and improved crayfish optimization algorithm–regularized extreme learning machine (ICOA-RELM) models were constructed using measured data and selected variable groups for SSC inversion. The results indicate that the ICOA-RELM model enhances the R2 value by an average of about 0.1 compared to other models, particularly those using groups of variables filtered by variable projection importance analysis as input variables, which showed the best inversion effect (test set R2 value of 0.75, MAE of 0.198, RMSE of 0.249). The SSC inversion results indicate a higher salinization degree in the coastal regions of the Yellow River Delta and a lower degree in the inland areas, with moderate saline soil and severe saline soil comprising 48.69% of the total area. These results are consistent with the actual sampling results, which verify the practicability of the model. This paper’s methods and findings introduce an innovative and practical tool for monitoring and managing salinized soils in the Yellow River Delta, offering significant theoretical and practical benefits.
The occurrence of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is closely related to meteorological factors. However, location-specific characteristics, such as persistent air pollution, may increase the ...complexity of the impact of meteorological factors on HFMD, and studies across different areas and populations are largely lacking. In this study, a two-stage multisite time-series analysis was conducted using data from 16 cities in Shandong Province from 2015 to 2019. In the first stage, we obtained the cumulative exposure–response curves of meteorological factors and the number of HFMD cases for each city. In the second stage, we merged the estimations from the first stage and included city-specific air pollution variables to identify significant effect modifiers and how they modified the short-term relationship between HFMD and meteorological factors. High concentrations of air pollutants may reduce the risk effects of high average temperature on HFMD and lead to a distinct peak in the cumulative exposure-response curve, while lower concentrations may increase the risk effects of high relative humidity. Furthermore, the effects of average wind speed on HFMD were different at different levels of air pollution. The differences in modification effects between subgroups were mainly manifested in the diversity and quantity of significant modifiers. The modification effects of long-term air pollution levels on the relationship between sunshine hours and HFMD may vary significantly depending on geographical location. The people in age<3 and male groups were more susceptible to long-term air pollution. These findings contribute to a deepening understanding of the relationship between meteorological factors and HFMD and provide evidence for relevant public health decision-making.

Supply voltage reduction with process scaling has made the design of analog, RF and mixed mode circuits increasingly difficult. In this paper, we present the design of an ultra-low voltage, low power ...and highly integrated dual-mode receiver for 2.4-GHz ISM-band applications. The receiver operates reliably from 0.55-0.65 V and is compatible with commercial standards such as Bluetooth and ZigBee. We discuss the design challenges at low voltage supplies such as limited f T for transistors and higher nonlinearities due to limited available signal swing, and present the architectural and circuit level design techniques used to overcome these challenges. The highly integrated receiver prototype chip contains RF front-end circuits, analog baseband circuits and the RF frequency synthesizer and was fabricated in a standard digital 90-nm CMOS process; it achieves a gain of 67 dB, noise figure of 16 dB, IIP 3 of -10.5 dBm, synthesizer phase noise of - 127 dBc/Hz at 3-MHz offset, consumes 32.5 mW from 0.6 V and occupies an active area of 1.7 mm 2 .
The dynamics of liquid water feature a variety of time scales, ranging from extremely fast ballistic-like thermal motion, to slower molecular diffusion and hydrogen-bond rearrangements. Here, we ...utilize coherent X-ray pulses to investigate the sub-100 fs equilibrium dynamics of water from ambient conditions down to supercooled temperatures. This novel approach utilizes the inherent capability of X-ray speckle visibility spectroscopy to measure equilibrium intermolecular dynamics with lengthscale selectivity, by measuring oxygen motion in momentum space. The observed decay of the speckle contrast at the first diffraction peak, which reflects tetrahedral coordination, is attributed to motion on a molecular scale within the first 120 fs. Through comparison with molecular dynamics simulations, we conclude that the slowing down upon cooling from 328 K down to 253 K is not due to simple thermal ballistic-like motion, but that cage effects play an important role even on timescales over 25 fs due to hydrogen-bonding.
The high prevalence of depression among older people in China places a heavy burden on the health system. Multimorbidity, mobility limitation and subjective memory impairment are found to be risk ...indicators for depression. However, most studies on this topic focused on depression at a single point in time, ignoring the dynamic changes in depressive symptoms and the relationship between the trajectories and these three conditions. Therefore, we aimed to identify distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms in older people and investigate their associations with multimorbidity, mobility limitation and subjective memory impairment.
Data was drawn from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study conducted during 2011-2018. A total of 5196 participants who completed 4 visits, conducted every 2-3 years were included in this study. Group-based trajectory modeling was conducted to identify distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms z-scores. Multinomial logistic regression was used to investigate the relationships.
Four distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms z-scores were identified, labeled as persistently low symptoms (68.69%, n = 3569), increasing symptoms (12.14%, n = 631), decreasing symptoms (14.05%, n = 730) and persistently high symptoms (5.12%, n = 266). Participants with multimorbidity had unfavorable trajectories of depressive symptoms compared with those without multimorbidity, with adjusted odds ratios (95% CIs) of 1.40 (1.15, 1.70), 1.59 (1.33, 1.90) and 2.19 (1.65, 2.90) for the increasing symptoms, decreasing symptoms and persistently high symptoms, respectively. We also observed a similar trend among participants with mobility limitations. Compared with participants who had poor subjective memory, participants with excellent/very good/good subjective memory had a lower risk of developing unfavorable trajectories of depressive symptoms. The adjusted odds ratios (95% CIs) of the increasing symptoms, decreasing symptoms and persistently high symptoms were 0.54 (0.40, 0.72), 0.50 (0.38, 0.65) and 0.48 (0.31, 0.73), respectively.
Multimorbidity, mobility limitation and subjective memory impairment were found to be potential risk factors for unfavorable depression trajectories.
