This paper presents a survey of the worldwide use of Digital Television interactivity (DTVi) standards. First, we recall some concepts of first-generation interactivity middlewares released in the ...early 2000s, such as the European MHP (based on Java) and the Japanese BML (based on XML). Then, we cover the new standards (emerging after 2010) that introduced the new Integrated Broadcast Broadband (IBB) model, which combines broadcast signals with a broadband interface and leverages synergies to offer high-quality, flexible, interactive and customized services and applications to viewers. Regarding IBB systems, we also cover the main aspects of their architectures and innovations introduced by this kind of technology, such as support to companion devices, e.g., smartphones, tablets, targeted advertisements, and integration with Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. Finally, we show the current adoption of different IBB systems around the world as well as current challenges regarding IBB technologies.
•Isobutanol and isoamyl alcohol have sensory relevance in wine aroma.•Methionol and β-phenylethanol have no sensory effect in wine aroma.•Sensory effects are evident only in aromatic contexts with ...clear odors.•Higher alcohols significantly suppress fruity, woody or corky notes.•Only in certain aromatic contexts alcohol-solvent notes become evident.
This work aims to assess the aromatic sensory contribution of the four most relevant wine higher alcohols (isobutanol, isoamyl alcohol, methionol and β-phenylethanol) on red wine aroma. The four alcohols were added at two levels of concentration, within the natural range of occurrence, to eight different wine models (WM), close reconstitutions of red wines differing in levels of fruity (F), woody (W), animal (A) or humidity (H) notes. Samples were submitted to discriminant and descriptive sensory analysis.
Results showed that the contribution of methionol and β-phenylethanol to wine aroma was negligible and confirmed the sensory importance of the pair isobutanol-isoamyl alcohol. Sensory effects were only evident in WM containing intense aromas, demonstrating a strong dependence on the aromatic context. Higher alcohols significantly suppress strawberry/lactic/red fruity, coconut/wood/vanilla and humidity/TCA notes, but not the leather/animal/ink note. The spirit/alcoholic/solvent character generated by higher alcohols has been shown to be wine dependent.
•A HS-SPME-GC-MS method for the reliable quantification of 30 raw beef volatiles was developed.•The inclusion of a control solution overcomes several challenges associated with the analysis of solid ...samples.•Method variability is sufficient for studying the volatile profile from samples with different lipid oxidation degrees.
This work presents a headspace-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) method for the analysis of solid food samples in extended experiments. The final procedure was used to quantify 30 volatile compounds in fresh beef. The strategy adds robustness to the classic SPME methods for solid samples, by including a control solution that solves several challenges. The control solution contained one representative compound for each studied family of beef, and two internal standards. Response factors were calculated for each family, and were subsequently applied to every compound belonging to the same family. This strategy allowed control of the quantification procedure even when the fibre, column or control solution changed. Repeatability and reproducibility had relative standard deviation values below 17%, except for phenylacetaldehyde, (E)-2-nonenal and (E,Z)-2,4-decadienal. Although the method described here was applied to animal products, it has also been successfully used to distinguish between samples from different lipid oxidation stabilities.
Strecker aldehydes (SA) can be formed in wine from the degradation of Strecker and, to a lesser degree, via the oxidation of higher alcohols. The objective of this article is to assess the magnitude ...of the differences introduced by wine compositional factors other than amino acids and Fe, in the accumulation of SA during oxidation. Eight red, two rosé and two white wines were oxidized. The accumulation of SA was analyzed. Whites and rosés presented negative accumulations for isobutyraldehyde, and in general, these wines accumulated smaller concentrations of the other SA than red wines. Only methional and phenylacetaldehyde were accumulated in all of the wines during oxidation. 2-methylbutanal and 3-methylbutanal were accumulated in 9 out of the 12 wines, whereas isobutyraldehyde was accumulated only in 5 out of the 12. 2-methylbutanal was, on average, the least accumulated aldehyde. Methional was the aldehyde formed most homogenously. Most of the observed differences can be attributed to three factors: the pH, oxidation time and native levels of Strecker aldehydes. The influence of pH was particularly intense in the cases of phenylacetaldehyde and methional. An independent test using synthetic wines with Strecker amino acids and 4-methylcatechol with different pHs (4.2, 3.5 and 2.8) was carried out in order to verify the higher pH value, the greater accumulation in SA after oxidation process. The results strongly suggest the important role played by pH in the accumulation of SA in wine oxidation.
To evaluate the effect of treatment with the combination of three cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators-elexacaftor+tezacaftor+ivacaftor (ETI)-on important clinical ...endpoints in individuals with cystic fibrosis.
This was a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials that compared the use of ETI in individuals with CF and at least one F508del allele with that of placebo or with an active comparator such as other combinations of CFTR modulators, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations and the Patients of interest, Intervention to be studied, Comparison of interventions, and Outcome of interest (PICO) methodology. We searched the following databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ClinicalTrials.gov from their inception to December 26th, 2022. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool, and the quality of evidence was based on the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE).
We retrieved 54 studies in the primary search. Of these, 6 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed (1,127 patients; 577 and 550 in the intervention and control groups, respectively). The meta-analysis revealed that the use of ETI increased FEV1% risk difference (RD), +10.47%; 95% CI, 6.88-14.06, reduced the number of acute pulmonary exacerbations (RD, -0.16; 95% CI, -0.28 to -0.04), and improved quality of life (RD, +14.93; 95% CI, 9.98-19.89) and BMI (RD, +1.07 kg/m2; 95% CI, 0.90-1.25). Adverse events did not differ between groups (RD, -0.03; 95% CI, -0.08 to 0.01), and none of the studies reported deaths.
Our findings demonstrate that ETI treatment substantially improves clinically significant, patient-centered outcomes.
BACKGROUND:Cystic fibrosis (CF) is associated with chronic respiratory disease and pancreatic insufficiency and results in the malabsorption of nutrients and intestinal inflammation. There is ...evidence that probiotic supplementation may impact the gastrointestinal and respiratory microbiota. This study aimed to categorize current evidence regarding the effects of supplementing with probiotics in CF patients on gastrointestinal and respiratory outcomes according to the type of intervention.
METHODS:The initial database search included all identified studies according to the recommendations of the Cochrane Collaboration, regardless of language, publication date or design. Studies were categorized by probiotic strain (Lactobacillus reuteri; Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG or a mix of strains); dosage (low dosage if <109 CFU (colony forming units) or high dosage if >109 CFU); and duration of intervention (one, three, six or twelve months). Assessment of quality was performed based on the Cochrane risk of bias criteria and the Downs & Black checklist.
RESULTS:A total of 205 studies were identified; however, only nine met the criteria for inclusion. The studies were considered to have a high risk of bias, hampering the possibility of performing a meta-analysis. Eighty percent of the studies (4 of 5) reported a positive result for intestinal inflammation, and another 4 studies (4 of 5) reported a positive result for pulmonary exacerbation frequency, regardless of the treatment approach.
CONCLUSION:The present data indicate a promising future for probiotic use in cystic fibrosis, which has an impact on exacerbations and intestinal inflammation; however, further studies of standardized therapeutic interventions are required.
A cross-sectional study was conducted on bovine brucellosis in a sample of 173 medium/small-scale cattle farmers in a tropical region of Ecuador. A total of 173 milk tank samples were collected and ...analyzed through an indirect ELISA. A survey was also applied to each farm to collect information on herd management, evaluate the level of knowledge about the disease and estimate the risk that bovine brucellosis on those farms could represent for public health. The apparent prevalence among farms was 11.5% (95% CI: 6.7%–16.2%). The medium farms had a prevalence significantly higher (23.8%, 95% CI: 10.9%–36.6%, p<0.0001) than the small farms (7.6%, 95% CI: 4.5%–9%). Two multivariable analysis were conducted to identify risk factors associated with bovine brucellosis or reproductive disorders. Medium farms had 3.7 more odds to be infected than the small farms (OR: 3.7, 95% CI: 1.39–9.84, p=0.008). Incineration/burial of abortion material was identified as a protective factor (OR: 0.4, 95% CI: 0.14–0.98, p=0.04). Farm size and brucellosis were identified as risk factors for the occurrence of reproductive disorders. Only 25% of the farmers were aware of bovine brucellosis. Unpasteurized curdled milk was regularly consumed and marketed on 112 farms of which 14 were positive for bovine brucellosis. Highly at-risk practices, such as manipulation of aborted fetuses were also reported. These results indicate that there is a need to develop public health education programs targeted at medium/small-scale farmers in Ecuador.
