The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will devote significant observing time to the study of exoplanets. It will not be serviceable as was the Hubble Space Telescope, and therefore the ...spacecraft/instruments will have a relatively limited life. It is important to get as much science as possible out of this limited observing time. We provide an analysis framework (including publicly released computational tools) that can be used to optimize lists of exoplanet targets for atmospheric characterization. Our tools take catalogs of planet detections, either simulated, or actual; categorize the targets by planet radius and equilibrium temperature; estimate planet masses; generate model spectra and simulated instrument spectra; perform a statistical analysis to determine if the instrument spectra can confirm an atmospheric detection; and finally, rank the targets within each category by observation time required. For a catalog of simulated Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite planet detections, we determine an optimal target ranking for the observing time available. Our results are generally consistent with other recent studies of JWST exoplanet target optimization. We show that assumptions about target planet atmospheric metallicity, instrument performance (especially the noise floor), and statistical detection threshold, can have a significant effect on target ranking. Over its full 10 yr (fuel-limited) mission, JWST has the potential to increase the number of atmospheres characterized by transmission spectroscopy by an order of magnitude (from about 50 currently to between 400 and 500).
Abstract We collected near-infrared spectra of 65 cool stars with the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and analyzed them to calculate accurate metallicities and stellar parameters. The sample of 55 M ...dwarfs and 10 K dwarfs includes 25 systems with confirmed planets and 27 systems with planet candidates identified by the K2 and TESS missions. Three of the 25 confirmed planetary systems host multiple confirmed planets and two of the 27 planet candidate systems host multiple planet candidates. Using the new stellar parameters, we refit the K2 and TESS light curves to calculate updated planet properties. In general, our updated stellar properties are more precise than those previously reported and our updated planet properties agree well with those in the literature. Lastly, we briefly examine the relationship between stellar mass, stellar metallicity, and planetary system properties for targets in our sample and for previously characterized planet-hosting low-mass stars. We provide our spectra, stellar parameters, and new planetary fits to the community, expanding the sample available with which to investigate correlations between stellar and planetary properties for low-mass stars.
Although several thousands of exoplanets have now been detected and characterized, observational biases have led to a paucity of long-period, low-mass exoplanets with measured masses and a ...corresponding lag in our understanding of such planets. In this paper we report the mass estimation and characterization of the long-period exoplanet Kepler-538b. This planet orbits a Sun-like star (V = 11.27) with M and R . Kepler-538b is a R⊕ sub-Neptune with a period of P = 81.73778 0.00013 days. It is the only known planet in the system. We collected radial velocity (RV) observations with the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) on Keck I and High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher in North hemisphere (HARPS-N) on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). We characterized stellar activity by a Gaussian process with a quasi-periodic kernel applied to our RV and cross-correlation function FWHM observations. By simultaneously modeling Kepler photometry, RV, and FWHM observations, we found a semi-amplitude of m s−1 and a planet mass of M⊕. Kepler-538b is the smallest planet beyond P = 50 days with an RV mass measurement. The planet likely consists of a significant fraction of ices (dominated by water ice), in addition to rocks/metals, and a small amount of gas. Sophisticated modeling techniques such as those used in this paper, combined with future spectrographs with ultra high-precision and stability will be vital for yielding more mass measurements in this poorly understood exoplanet regime. This in turn will improve our understanding of the relationship between planet composition and insolation flux and how the rocky to gaseous transition depends on planetary equilibrium temperature.

K2-136 is a late-K dwarf (\(0.742\pm0.039\) M\(_\odot\)) in the Hyades open cluster with three known, transiting planets and an age of \(650\pm70\) Myr. Analyzing K2 photometry, we found that planets ...K2-136b, c, and d have periods of \(8.0\), \(17.3\), and \(25.6\) days and radii of \(1.014\pm0.050\) R\(_\oplus\), \(3.00\pm0.13\) R\(_\oplus\), and \(1.565\pm0.077\) R\(_\oplus\), respectively. We collected 93 radial velocity measurements (RVs) with the HARPS-N spectrograph (TNG) and 22 RVs with the ESPRESSO spectrograph (VLT). Analyzing HARPS-N and ESPRESSO data jointly, we found K2-136c induced a semi-amplitude of \(5.49\pm0.53\) m s\(^{-1}\), corresponding to a mass of \(18.1\pm1.9\) M\(_\oplus\). We also placed \(95\)% upper mass limits on K2-136b and d of \(4.3\) and \(3.0\) M\(_\oplus\), respectively. Further, we analyzed HST and XMM-Newton observations to establish the planetary high-energy environment and investigate possible atmospheric loss. K2-136c is now the smallest planet to have a measured mass in an open cluster and one of the youngest planets ever with a mass measurement. K2-136c has \(\sim\)75% the radius of Neptune but is similar in mass, yielding a density of \(3.69^{+0.67}_{-0.56}\) g cm\(^{-3}\) (\(\sim\)2-3 times denser than Neptune). Mass estimates for K2-136b (and possibly d) may be feasible with more RV observations, and insights into all three planets' atmospheres through transmission spectroscopy would be challenging but potentially fruitful. This research and future mass measurements of young planets are critical for investigating the compositions and characteristics of small exoplanets at very early stages of their lives and providing insights into how exoplanets evolve with time.

Kepler-538b is a 2.215 +/- (0.040, 0.034) R_earth sub-Neptune with a period of P = 81.73778 +/- 0.00013 d. It is the only known planet in the system. We collected radial velocity (RV) observations with HIRES on Keck I and HARPS-N on the TNG. We characterized stellar activity by a Gaussian process with a quasi-periodic kernel applied to our RV and cross correlation function full width at half maximum (FWHM) observations. By simultaneously modeling Kepler photometry, RV, and FWHM observations, we found a semi-amplitude of K = 1.68 +/- (0.39, 0.38) m s^-1 and a planet mass of M_p = 10.6 +/- (2.5, 2.4) M_earth. Kepler-538b is the smallest planet beyond P = 50 d with an RV mass measurement. The planet likely consists of a significant fraction of ices (dominated by water ice), in addition to rocks/metals, and a small amount of gas. Sophisticated modeling techniques such as those used in this paper, combined with future spectrographs with ultra high-precision and stability will be vital for yielding more mass measurements in this poorly understood exoplanet regime. This in turn will improve our understanding of the relationship between planet composition and insolation flux and how the rocky to gaseous transition depends on planetary equilibrium temperature.
