This study examined the association between depressive symptoms and self-rated health (SRH) and whether and how such association varies by education among older adults with cancer. Data came from the ...2019 National Health Interview Survey. A total of 2,470 participants aged 65 or older who had been diagnosed with cancer by a doctor or other health professional were included in this study. Ordinal logistic regression was used to examine the association between depressive symptoms and SRH and whether and how such association varies by education among older adults with cancer. More depressive symptoms were associated with worse SRH. Such association became stronger with higher education among older adults with cancer. Findings confirm the associations between depressive symptoms and SRH among older adults with cancer. The differential impact of education on SRH and on the association between depressive symptoms and SRH highlights the importance of considering patients' educational attainment in a more comprehensive way when working with older adults with cancer. When conducting distress screening among cancer survivors, oncology social workers should be aware of the complex relationship between education and depression in relation to cancer survivors' SRH.

The aim of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to understand how older adults cope with experiences of ageism and racism through an intersectional lens. Twenty adults 60+ residing in the ...U.S. Mountain West who identified as Black, Hispanic/Latino(a), Asian-American/Pacific Islander, Indigenous, or White participated individually in a one-hour, semi-structured interview. A team of five coders engaged in an inductive coding process through independent coding followed by critical discussion. Peer debriefing enhanced credibility. Nine themes were organized by three umbrella categories: Coping with ageism: 1) distancing via self-determination/defying stereotypes, 2) distancing by helping others; Coping with racism: 3) resistance, 4) exhaustion; Coping with both ageism and racism: 5) increased awareness through aging, 6) healthy lifestyle, 7) education, 8) acceptance/ ‘let it go’, and 9) avoidance. Novel findings include how older adults may cope with ageism and racism via increased awareness through aging and with ageism specifically by helping peer older adults, although instances of internalized ageism were noted and discussed. The themes exemplify problem-focused (e.g., helping others) and emotion-focused (acceptance), as well as individual (e.g., self-determination) and collective (e.g., resistance) coping strategies. This study can serve as a resource for practitioners in applying a more nuanced understanding of the ways older adults cope with ageism and racism in later life.

Enrichments capable of toluene degradation under O2-free denitrifying conditions were established with diverse inocula including agricultural soils, compost, aquifer material, and contaminated soil ...samples from different geographic regions of the world. Successful enrichment was strongly dependent on the initial use of relatively low toluene concentrations, typically 5 ppm. From the enrichments showing positive activity for toluene degradation, 10 bacterial isolates were obtained. Fingerprints generated by PCR-amplified DNA, with repetitive extragenic palindromic sequence primers, showed that eight of these isolates were different. Under aerobic conditions, all eight isolates degraded toluene, five degraded ethylbenzene, three consumed benzene, and one degraded chlorobenzene. meta-Xylene was the only other substrate used anaerobically and was used by only one isolate. All isolates were motile gram-negative rods, produced N2 from denitrification, and did not hydrolyze starch. All strains but one fixed nitrogen as judged by ethylene production from acetylene, but only four strains hybridized to the nifHDK genes. All strains appeared to have heme nitrite reductase since their DNA hybridized to the heme (nirS) but not to the Cu (nirU) genes. Five strains hybridized to a toluene ortho-hydroxylase catabolic probe, and two of those also hybridized to a toluene meta-hydroxylase probe. Partial sequences of the 16S rRNA genes of all isolates showed substantial similarity to 16S rRNA sequences of Azoarcus sp. Physiological, morphological, fatty acid, and 16S rRNA analyses indicated that these strains were closely related to each other and that they belong to the genus Azoarcus. The activity and isolation of at least one toluene-degrading denitrifier from the majority of the habitat types studied suggest that microbes with the capacity to grow anaerobically on toluene are common in nature

Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) are associated with depression. However, it is unclear whether coexisting CMDs may increase the risk of depression. We examined associations between cardiometabolic multimorbidity and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older Chinese.
Participants aged ≥45 years were enrolled from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011–2018 (N = 18,002). Cardiometabolic multimorbidity was defined as the coexistence of ≥2 CMDs, including stroke, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. We used generalized estimating equation models to examine associations between cardiometabolic multimorbidity and depressive symptoms, including the dose effect of disease count and prevalent disease combinations, as well as individual and additive effects of specific CMDs.
The prevalence of cardiometabolic multimorbidity was 24.5%. A higher number of CMDs had an additive dose effect on depressive symptoms that persisted consistently in specific CMDs. Stroke only, heart disease only, and diabetes only were each associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms compared with no CMDs. CMD combinations involving stroke, heart disease, or diabetes were each associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms compared with the absence of stroke, heart disease, or diabetes.

Stroke, heart disease, and diabetes showed individual and additive effects on CMD combinations, whereas hypertension and dyslipidemia only showed associations with depressive symptoms in combinations with other CMDs. These results suggest person-centered healthcare of mental health prevention and treatment for middle-aged and older adults with individual or multiple CMDs.
The aim of this study is to examine perceived quality of life in Chinese older adults living with cognitive impairment and explore its associations with caregivers' characteristics. Questionnaires ...were administered in person to 271 caregiver-care recipient dyads from urban communities in mainland China in 2019. We used the 40-item Alzheimer's Disease-related Quality of Life tool and asked caregiver respondents to indicate care recipients' life conditions. The questionnaire asked caregivers about their sociodemographic characteristics, levels of informal social support, caregiver burden, and depressive symptoms. Caregivers' higher levels of caregiver burden (β = > −0.19, p < .01) and depressive symptoms (β = > −0.19, p < .01) amongst caregivers were significantly associated with lower quality of life among care recipients. Informal support from relatives and friends to caregivers did not significantly affect quality of life of care recipients. The results suggested that reducing caregivers' burden and depressive symptoms are essential to promote quality of life of care recipients. Formal support from health professionals, service organizations, and communities are urgently called to promote the wellbeing of Chinese families affected by cognitive impairment.
Vocabulary understanding is a major contributor to overall comprehension in many content areas, including mathematics. Effective methods for teaching vocabulary in all content areas are diverse and ...long standing. Teaching and learning the language of mathematics is vital for the development of mathematical proficiency. Students' mathematical vocabulary learning is a very important part of their language development and ultimately mathematical proficiency. This article draws on current research-based evidence to (a) provide a rationale for teaching vocabulary, (b) offer a review of research that supports the importance of teaching mathematics vocabulary, and (c) describe specific strategies for teaching mathematics vocabulary. It also addresses implications and the need for future research.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare the combined diagnostic reliability of sonohysterography and endometrial biopsy with fractional curettage with hysteroscopy in the initial evaluation of postmenopausal ...women with abnormal uterine bleeding.
STUDY DESIGN: This year-long, prospective, controlled, clinical investigation was initiated Sept. 1, 1995. All postmenopausal women with abnormal uterine bleeding were offered inclusion, with 104 enrolled. An endometrial biopsy was performed at the time of initial evaluation. Routine transvaginal ultrasonography was then used to measure the uterus, ovaries, and endometrial stripe thickness, followed immediately by sonohysterography to evaluate the symmetry of endometrial wall thickness and delineate any intraluminal masses. Definitive histopathologic sampling was obtained by fractional curettage with hysteroscopy and statistically compared with the diagnoses arrived at by endometrial biopsy and sonohysterography.
RESULTS: The combination of endometrial biopsy and transvaginal sonohysterography positively correlated with the surgical findings >95% of the time, with a sensitivity and specificity of 94% and 96%, respectively (confidence interval 91% to 99%). No patients with endometrial hyperplasia or cancer were misdiagnosed.
CONCLUSIONS: Sonohysterography combined with endometrial biopsy is a reliable office tool for evaluating postmenopausal women with abnormal uterine bleeding. Medical management of those patients identified as having no endometrial abnormalities can be considered with confidence, while saving the cost and surgical risk of fractional curettage. Patients with intraluminal masses should be referred for surgical management in a timely fashion. (Am J Obstet Gynecol 1998;178:956-61.)
— We report combined micro‐infrared, micro‐Raman, and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) analyses of particles collected by the Stardust spacecraft during its flyby of comet 81P/Wild ...2 on 2 January 2004 and successfully returned back to Earth on 15 January 2006. We present mid‐infrared (IR) spectra of six of these particles. The CH2/CH3 ratios inferred from the infrared data are greater than those seen in organics in the diffuse interstellar medium, possibly indicating the presence of longer or less branched aliphatic chains. The micro‐Raman data offer insights into the state of the order of the carbonaceous component present in the particles. Raman parameters for most of the particles span a similar range to that observed in interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) and the most primitive meteorites. Both the IR and Raman data imply the presence of a very labile carbonaceous component. Hydrated silicates may be present in two particles of Track 35, one of which may also contain carbonates, but further investigations with other techniques need to be performed to confirm these findings. In some cases, the analyses are difficult to interpret because of the presence of compressed aerogel mixed with the grains.
The purpose of this study is to examine the reliability and validity of the ADRQL instrument among older adults with cognitive impairment in mainland China. Three hundred older adults with cognitive ...impairment and their primary family caregivers from Wuhan participated in structured interviews. Cronbach's α and Kuder-Richardson Formula 20 were used to examine internal consistency reliability. Confirmatory factor analysis, Heterotrait-Monotrait ratios, and ordinary least square regression were used to assess the factorial validity, discriminant validity, and criterion validity. The ADRQL had acceptable reliability and validity, which can be used to assess overall quality of life for this population.
Objectives: In China, the high prevalence of cognitive impairment among older adults affects millions of family caregivers and raises concerns for caregiver burden, depression, and other mental ...health problems. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between coping strategies and caregiver burden and depression among Chinese caregivers of older adults with cognitive impairment. Method: Data came from structured interviews with 300 primary family caregiver–care recipient dyads in Wuhan, China. Coping strategies were measured by the Brief COPE (Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced) survey, caregiver burden was measured by the Zarit Burden Interview, and depression was measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. We used ordinary least squares regression to examine the association between coping strategies and caregiver burden and depression. Results: More positive reframing and acceptance were associated with lower caregiver burden, whereas more self-distraction was associated with higher caregiver burden. More positive reframing was associated with lower caregiver depression, whereas higher self-distraction and religion were associated with higher caregiver depression. Conclusions: Findings are of particular importance in developing and refining mental health interventions to prevent and reduce caregiver burden and stress by advocating for resources and training to facilitate effective positive reframing.
