This paper presents the functionality and architecture of a new conference-control management system called Confman 2.0. It enables the user to initiate and participate in online conferences based on ...current Internet standards. Supported system platforms include Unix workstations and Microsoft operating systems as well. Starting with a short description of current Internet conferencing technology the paper describes Confman's conference-control functionality and gives a brief overview of Confman's distributed software architecture.

An exploration of the psychosocial functions of sport based on comparative data comprising questionnaire responses from 3 groups of U students: 510 at Oklahoma State U, Stillwater; 264 at the U of ...Queensland, Australia; & 90 at the U of Carabobo, Venezuela. Active participation in sports is not consistently related to endorsement of their psychosocial functions, but overall involvement with sports is found to be related to endorsement of both psychological & social functions of sports. 198 amniotic fluid samples, obtained from 14-42 weeks of 158 patients were assessed for amniotic fluid phospholipids (total phospholipids, lecithin, sphingomyelin, lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio). The ...TPLP and Lec-concentrations show significant rises in concentration after 34th week whereas the sphingomyelin concentration remains virtually constant during pregnancy. L/S ratio remains relatively constant smaller than or equal to 2 prior to 32 weeks and smaller than or equal to 3 between 32 and 34 weeks but shows then a steep rise. The amount of Lec (expressed as percentage of total phospholipid concentration) rises from 30-40% at 30 weeks to 70-80% at term whereas the amount of Sph declines from 30-40% to less than 10%. In 12 cases neonatal RDS occurred. With L/S ratio treshold values of 3 correct prediction of RDS was made in 83% of cases, whereas probability of RDS occurrence was 63%. With L/S ratio values greater 3 RDS can be excluded in 95% of cases. The corresponding figures for Lec and TPLP concentration are described too. The range of different results in the literature is discussed.
The growing amount of realtime applications in the Internet, like multimedia communication or online games, demands an appropriate assessment of end-to-end network performance. In this paper, we ...present LTest, a tool for distributed, middleware based network performance measurements. We also describe scenarios that help ISPs and content providers to monitor the service levels that will be perceived by users. Furthermore, a performance analysis and error estimation as well as sample measurements are presented within this paper.
Lysine fatty acylation in mammalian cells was discovered nearly three decades ago, yet the enzymes catalyzing it remain unknown. Unexpectedly, we find that human N-terminal glycine ...myristoyltransferases (NMT) 1 and 2 can efficiently myristoylate specific lysine residues. They modify ADP-ribosylation factor 6 (ARF6) on lysine 3 allowing it to remain on membranes during the GTPase cycle. We demonstrate that the NAD
-dependent deacylase SIRT2 removes the myristoyl group, and our evidence suggests that NMT prefers the GTP-bound while SIRT2 prefers the GDP-bound ARF6. This allows the lysine myrisotylation-demyristoylation cycle to couple to and promote the GTPase cycle of ARF6. Our study provides an explanation for the puzzling dissimilarity of ARF6 to other ARFs and suggests the existence of other substrates regulated by this previously unknown function of NMT. Furthermore, we identified a NMT/SIRT2-ARF6 regulatory axis, which may offer new ways to treat human diseases.
From September 1980 to December 1986, 72 percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography drainages (PTCD) were performed in 64 patients (58 palliative in malignant obstructions, 14 temporary). The median ...duration of drainage was 26.8 days (2-183 days). The median survival time in 37 patients with palliative tumour drainage was 55.3 days (7-473 days). 9/37 patients survived longer than 3 months (max. 15.5 months). Complications occurred in 29.5% (10.3% severe). 3/64 patients (4.7%) died. Patients with palliative transpapillary drainages (23), especially with endoprostheses (14), survived longer, and the complication rate was lower. Therefore, we prefer the endoscopic transpapillary approach. PTCD patients must be selected carefully.
Proper Golgi complex function depends on the activity of Arf1, a GTPase whose effectors assemble and transport outgoing vesicles. Phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PI4P) generated at the Golgi by the ...conserved PI 4-kinase Pik1 (PI4KIIIβ) is also essential for Golgi function, although its precise roles in vesicle formation are less clear. Arf1 has been reported to regulate PI4P production, but whether Pik1 is a direct Arf1 effector is not established. Using a combination of live-cell time-lapse imaging analyses, acute PI4P depletion experiments, and in vitro protein-protein interaction assays on Golgi-mimetic membranes, we present evidence for a model in which Arf1 initiates the final stages of Golgi maturation by tightly controlling PI4P production through direct recruitment of the Pik1-Frq1 PI4-kinase complex. This PI4P serves as a critical signal for AP-1 and secretory vesicle formation, the final events at maturing Golgi compartments. This work therefore establishes the regulatory and temporal context surrounding Golgi PI4P production and its precise roles in Golgi maturation.
