We report the discovery and monitoring of the near-infrared counterpart (AT2017gfo) of a binary neutron-star merger event detected as a gravitational wave source by Advanced Laser Interferometer ...Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO)/Virgo (GW170817) and as a short gamma-ray burst by Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) and Integral SPI-ACS (GRB 170817A). The evolution of the transient light is consistent with predictions for the behavior of a "kilonova/macronova" powered by the radioactive decay of massive neutron-rich nuclides created via r-process nucleosynthesis in the neutron-star ejecta. In particular, evidence for this scenario is found from broad features seen in Hubble Space Telescope infrared spectroscopy, similar to those predicted for lanthanide-dominated ejecta, and the much slower evolution in the near-infrared K s -band compared to the optical. This indicates that the late-time light is dominated by high-opacity lanthanide-rich ejecta, suggesting nucleosynthesis to the third r-process peak (atomic masses A 195 ). This discovery confirms that neutron-star mergers produce kilo-/macronovae and that they are at least a major-if not the dominant-site of rapid neutron capture nucleosynthesis in the universe.
ABSTRACT
Transits in the planetary system WASP-4 were recently found to occur 80 s earlier than expected in observations from the TESS satellite. We present 22 new times of mid-transit that confirm ...the existence of transit timing variations, and are well fitted by a quadratic ephemeris with period decay dP/dt = −9.2 ± 1.1 ms yr−1. We rule out instrumental issues, stellar activity, and the Applegate mechanism as possible causes. The light-time effect is also not favoured due to the non-detection of changes in the systemic velocity. Orbital decay and apsidal precession are plausible but unproven. WASP-4 b is only the third hot Jupiter known to show transit timing variations to high confidence. We discuss a variety of observations of this and other planetary systems that would be useful in improving our understanding of WASP-4 in particular and orbital decay in general.
ABSTRACT
We present the results of 14 nights of I-band photometric monitoring of the nearby brown dwarf binary, ϵ Indi Ba and Bb. Observations were acquired over 2 months, with a total of close to ...42 h of coverage at a typically high cadence of 1.4 min. At a separation of just 0.7 arcsec, we do not resolve the individual components, and so effectively treat the binary as if it were a single object. However, ϵ Indi Ba (spectral type T1) is the brightest known T-type brown dwarf, and is expected to dominate the photometric signal. We typically find no strong variability associated with the target during each individual night of observing, but see significant changes in mean brightness – by as much as 0.10 mag – over the 2 months of the campaign. This strong variation is apparent on a time-scale of at least 2 d. We detect no clear periodic signature, which suggests that we may be observing the T1 brown dwarf almost pole-on, and the days-long variability in mean brightness is caused by changes in the large-scale structure of the cloud coverage. Dynamic clouds will very likely produce lightning, and complementary high-cadence V-band and H α images were acquired to search for the emission signatures associated with stochastic ‘strikes’. We report no positive detections for the target in either of these passbands.
Abstract
The SuperFGD detector will be a novel and important upgrade to the ND280 near detector for both the T2K and Hyper-Kamiokande projects. The main goal of the ND280 upgrade is to reduce ...systematic uncertainties associated with neutrino flux and cross-section modeling for future studies of neutrino oscillations using the T2K and Hyper-Kamiokande experiments. The upgraded ND280 detector will be able to perform a full exclusive reconstruction of the final state from neutrino-nucleus interactions, including measurements of low momentum protons, pions and for the first time, event-by event measurements of neutron kinematics. Precisely understanding the time resolution is critical for the neutron energy measurements and hence an important factor in reducing the systematic uncertainties. In this paper we present the results of time resolution measurements made with the SuperFGD prototype that consists of 9216 plastic scintillator cubes (cube size is 1 cm
3
) readout with 1728 wavelength-shifting (WLS) fibers along the three orthogonal directions. We used data from a muon beam exposure at CERN. A time resolution of 0.97 ns was obtained for one readout channel after implementing the time calibration with a correction for time-walk effects. The time resolution improves with increasing energy deposited in a scintillator cube,
improving to 0.87 ns for large pulses.
Averaging two readout channels for one scintillator cube further improves the time resolution to 0.68 ns implying that signals in different channels are not synchronous. In addition the contribution from the time sampling interval of 2.5 ns is averaged as well. Most importantly, averaging time values from N channels improves the time resolution by ∼ 1/√(N). For example, averaging the time from 2 scintillator cubes with 2 fibers each improves the time resolution to 0.47 ns which is much better than the intrinsic electronics time resolution of 0.72 ns in one channel due to the 2.5 ns sampling window. This indicates that a very good time resolution should be achievable for neutrons since neutron recoils typically interact with several scintillator cubes and in addition produce larger signal amplitudes than muons. Measurements performed with a laser and a wide-bandwidth oscilloscope in which the contribution from the electronics time sampling window was removed demonstrated that the time resolution obtained with the muon beam is not far from the theoretical limit. The intrinsic time resolution of a scintillator cube and one WLS fiber is about 0.67 ns for signals of 56 photo electrons which is typical for minimum ionizing particles.

Abstract
Cometary activity is a manifestation of sublimation-driven processes at the surface of nuclei. However, cometary outbursts may arise from other processes that are not necessarily driven by ...volatiles. In order to fully understand nuclear surfaces and their evolution, we must identify the causes of cometary outbursts. In that context, we present a study of mini-outbursts of comet 46P/Wirtanen. Six events are found in our long-term lightcurve of the comet around its perihelion passage in 2018. The apparent strengths range from −0.2 to −1.6 mag in a 5″ radius aperture and correspond to dust masses between ∼10

and 10
6
kg, but with large uncertainties due to the unknown grain size distributions. However, the nominal mass estimates are on the same order of magnitude as the mini-outbursts at comet 9P/Tempel 1 and 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, events that were notably lacking at comet 103P/Hartley 2. We compare the frequency of outbursts at the four comets, and suggest that the surface of 46P has large-scale (∼10–100 m) roughness that is intermediate to that of 67P and 103P, if not similar to the latter. The strength of the outbursts appear to be correlated with time since the last event, but a physical interpretation with respect to solar insolation is lacking. We also examine Hubble Space Telescope images taken about two days following a near-perihelion outburst. No evidence for macroscopic ejecta was found in the image, with a limiting radius of about 2 m.
Pim-3, a proto-oncogene with serine/threonine kinase activity, was enhanced in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues. To address the roles of Pim-3 in HCC development, we prepared transgenic mice ...that express human Pim-3 selectively in liver. The mice were born at a Mendelian ratio, were fertile and did not exhibit any apparent pathological changes in the liver until 1 year after birth. Pim-3-transgenic mouse-derived hepatocytes exhibited accelerated cell cycle progression. The administration of a potent hepatocarcinogen, diethylnitrosamine (DEN), induced accelerated proliferation of liver cells in Pim-3 transgenic mice in the early phase, compared with that observed for wild-type mice. Treatment with DEN induced lipid droplet accumulation with increased proliferating cell numbers 6 months after the treatment. Eventually, wild-type mice developed HCC with a frequency of 40% until 10 month after the treatment. Lipid accumulation was accelerated in Pim-3 transgenic mice with higher proliferating cell numbers, compared with that observed for wild-type mice. Pim-3 transgenic mice developed HCC with a higher incidence (80%) and a heavier burden, together with enhanced intratumoral CD31-positive vascular areas, compared with that observed for wild-type mice. These observations indicate that Pim-3 alone cannot cause, but can accelerate HCC development when induced by a hepatocarcinogen, such as DEN.
We develop a fast and accurate calculation method for ionization degrees in protoplanetary and circumplanetary disks including dust grains. We apply our method to calculate the ionization degree of ...circumplanetary disks. It is important to understand the structure and evolution of protoplanetary /circumplanetary disks since they are thought to be the sites of planet/satellite formation. The turbulence that causes gas accretion is supposed to be driven by magnetorotational instability (MRI) that occurs only when the ionization degree is high enough for magnetic field to be coupled to gas. We calculate the ionization degrees in circumplanetary disks to estimate the sizes of MRI-inactive regions. We properly include the effect of dust grains because they efficiently capture charged particles and make ionization degree lower. Inclusion of dust grains complicates the reaction equations and requires expensive computation. In order to accelerate the calculation of ionization reactions, we develop a semianalytic method based on the charge distribution model proposed previously. This method enables us to study the ionization state of disks for a wide range of model parameters. For a previous model of circum-Jovian disk, we find that an MRI-inactive region covers almost all regions even without dust grains. This suggests that the gas accretion rates in circumplanetary disks are much smaller than previously thought.
The PICES CCCC (North Pacific Marine Science Organization, Climate Change and Carrying Capacity program) MODEL Task Team achieved a consensus on the structure of a prototype lower trophic level ...ecosystem model for the North Pacific Ocean, and named it the North Pacific Ecosystem Model for Understanding Regional Oceanography, “NEMURO”. Through an extensive dialog between modelers, plankton biologists and oceanographers, an extensive review was conducted to define NEMURO's process equations and their parameter values for distinct geographic regions. We present in this paper the formulation, structure and governing equations of NEMURO as well as examples to illustrate its behavior. NEMURO has eleven state variables: nitrate, ammonium, small and large phytoplankton biomass, small, large and predatory zooplankton biomass, particulate and dissolved organic nitrogen, particulate silica, and silicic acid concentration. Several applications reported in this issue of Ecological Modelling have successfully used NEMURO, and an extension that includes fish as an additional state variable. Applications include studies of the biogeochemistry of the North Pacific, and variations of its ecosystem's lower trophic levels and two target fish species at regional and basin-scale levels, and on time scales from seasonal to interdecadal.
Abstract The role of the high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) protein in chemotherapy-induced cell death was examined. CT26 mouse colon cancer cells were treated with trichostatin A (TSA; apoptosis ...inducer) or doxorubicin (DXR; necrosis inducer). DXR increased HMGB1 concentration in CT26 cell culture medium, whereas TSA did not. In a CT26 bilateral subcutaneous tumour model, DXR or TSA was injected in a single tumour. After injection, serum HMGB1 concentration in DXR-treated mice was 10 times higher than that in TSA-treated mice. After DXR treatment, the contralateral and remnant tumours showed more pronounced growth than did those treated with TSA. In mouse models, lung and liver metastasis was enhanced by DXR but not by TSA. DXR-enhanced metastasis was abrogated by anti-HMGB1 antibody treatment. In a cancer dormancy model, DXR induced regrowth of quiescent CT26 cells. HMGB1 induced tumour necrosis factor-α secretion via Toll-like receptor (TLR)4 in U937 monocytes; however, HMGB1 decreased the number of U937 cells, resulting in restriction of immune activation via receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE). RAGE showed a more pronounced effect on nuclear factor kappa B activation than did TLR4 in CT26 cells. These findings suggest that HMGB1 released from necrotic cancer cells treated with a necrosis inducer enhances regrowth and metastasis of remnant cancer cells via RAGE activation.
