Abstract Bovine herpesvirus-1 (BoHV-1) causes significant disease in cattle. Control programs in North America incorporate vaccination with modified live viral (MLV) or killed (KV) vaccine. BoHV-1 ...strains are isolated from diseased animals or fetuses after vaccination. There are markers for differentiating MLV from field strains using whole-genome sequencing and analysis identifying single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Using multiple primer sets and sequencing of products permits association of BoHV-1 isolates with vaccines. To determine association between vaccine virus and strains isolated from clinical cases following vaccination, we analyzed 12 BoHV-1 isolates from animals with various clinical syndromes; 9 corresponded to BoHV-1.1 respiratory group. The remaining three corresponded to BoHV-1.2b, typically found in genital tracts of cattle. Four BoHV-1 isolates were identical to a vaccine strain; three were from post-vaccination abortion episodes with typical herpetic lesions whose dams had received MLV vaccine during pregnancy, and one from a heifer given a related MLV vaccine; Sequences of two respiratory isolates perfectly matched mutations characterizing RLB106 strain, a temperature sensitive mutant used in intranasal and parenteral vaccines. The last three respiratory strains clearly appeared related to a group of MLV vaccines. Previously the MLV vaccines were grouped into four groups based on SNPs patterns. In contrast with above-mentioned isolates that closely matched SNP patterns of their respective MLV vaccine virus, these 3 strains both lacked some and possessed a number of additional mutations compared to a group of MLV vaccine viral genome. Finding BoHV-1.2b in respiratory cases indicates focus should be given BoHV-1.2b as an emerging virus or a virus not recognized nor fully characterized in BRD.
Abstract
Background
Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic widely used in healthcare settings. There are increasing reports of significant hypersensitivity reactions associated with its use. Development of ...chlorhexidine allergy has been identified as an important occupational risk to healthcare workers (HCWs).
Aims
To evaluate the prevalence of sensitization to chlorhexidine amongst HCWs at a large tertiary hospital to assess the potential allergic safety risks associated with chlorhexidine exposure to staff.
Methods
Sensitization to chlorhexidine was evaluated by measurement of serum-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) in samples collected from staff assessed after a sharps-injury incident and laboratory staff collected for quality assurance procedures. This test method has been shown to have high sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of chlorhexidine allergy. Prevalence of sensitization was additionally evaluated with reference to changes in exposure to chlorhexidine-based hand hygiene products because of infection control procedures and the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.
Results
A total of 320 samples were examined. The prevalence of positive chlorhexidine-specific IgE was 2%. Prevalence of sensitization in samples collected before and after increased chlorhexidine exposure was 1% and 3%. This did not represent a statistically significant difference.
Conclusions
The prevalence figures for chlorhexidine sensitization in this study are higher than have been estimated previously for similar HCW cohorts. Increased exposure to chlorhexidine-based hand hygiene products was not demonstrated to increase sensitization in this group. Given the risk of severe reactions in sensitized individuals, this study indicates that evaluation of chlorhexidine allergy is important when investigating occupational allergy in HCWs.
The current evaluation of the triple-α reaction rate assumes that the α decay of the 7.65 MeV, 0+ state in 12C, commonly known as the Hoyle state, proceeds sequentially via the ground state of 8Be. ...This assumption is challenged by the recent identification of two direct α-decay branches with a combined branching ratio of 17(5)%. If correct, this would imply a corresponding reduction in the triple-α reaction rate with important astrophysical consequences. We have used the 11B(3He,d) reaction to populate the Hoyle state and measured the decay to three α particles in complete kinematics. We find no evidence for direct α-decay branches, and hence our data do not support a revision of the triple-α reaction rate. We obtain an upper limit of 5×10(-3) on the direct α decay of the Hoyle state at 95% C.L., which is 1 order of magnitude better than a previous upper limit.
The mechanism for the large suppression of complete fusion in the 9Be+208Pb reaction has been investigated through measurement of sub-barrier breakup of 9Be. Excluding breakup through the 8Be ground ...state, whose lifetime is too long, a prompt breakup component remains, having sufficient probability to explain the observed suppression of complete fusion. This appears to be associated with interactions at the nuclear surface. The fusion suppression is predicted to be almost proportional to the charge of the target nucleus, making it most significant in reactions with heavy nuclei.
Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a genetically heterogeneous autosomal recessive disorder with the primary clinical features of obesity, pigmented retinopathy, polydactyly, hypogenitalism, mental ...retardation and renal anomalies. Associated features of the disorder include diabetes mellitus, hypertension and congenital heart disease. There are six known BBS loci, mapping to chromosomes 2, 3, 11, 15, 16 and 20. The BBS2 locus was initially mapped to an 18 cM interval on chromosome 16q21 with a large inbred Bedouin kindred. Further analysis of the Bedouin population allowed for the fine mapping of this locus to a 2 cM region distal to marker D16S408. Physical mapping and sequence analysis of this region resulted in the identification of a number of known genes and expressed sequence tag clusters. Mutation screening of a novel gene (BBS2) with a wide pattern of tissue expression revealed homozygous mutations in two inbred pedigrees, including the large Bedouin kindred used to initially identify the BBS2 locus. In addition, mutations were found in three of 18 unrelated BBS probands from small nuclear families.
In the centres of stars where the temperature is high enough, three alpha-particles (helium nuclei) are able to combine to form C-12 because of a resonant reaction leading to a nuclear excited ...state(1). (Stars with masses greater than similar to0.5 times that of the Sun will at some point in their lives have a central temperature high enough for this reaction to proceed.) Although the reaction rate is of critical significance for determining elemental abundances in the Universe(1), and for determining the size of the iron core of a star just before it goes supernova(2), it has hitherto been insufficiently determined(2). Here we report a measurement of the inverse process, where a C-12 nucleus decays to three alpha-particles. We find a dominant resonance at an energy of similar to11 MeV, but do not confirm the presence of a resonance at 9.1 MeV (ref. 3). We show that interference between two resonances has important effects on our measured spectrum. Using these data, we calculate the triple-a rate for temperatures from 10(7) K to 10(10) K and find significant deviations from the standard rates(3). Our rate below similar to5 x 10(7) K is higher than the previous standard, implying that the critical amounts of carbon that catalysed hydrogen burning in the first stars are produced twice as fast as previously believed(4). At temperatures above 10(9) K, our rate is much less, which modifies predicted nucleosynthesis in supernovae(5,6).

Over the past decade a range of facilities have been built which produce accelerated beams of short-lived radioactive nuclei. The advent of these beams has revolutionised nuclear physics research by ...removing the straightjacket that Nature had held us in when only the few stable nuclei were available to be used to initiate nuclear reactions. We can now probe further, and in more detail, towards the limits of nuclear stability, uncovering new structural phenomena and measuring the key nuclear reactions that control the energy output and element production in explosive astrophysical sites. A new generation of facilities is now under construction or planning that will have the capability to extend our reach ever further. In this talk we will survey the capabilities and time lines of these facilities, as well as looking at the science areas that each will address.
A commercial duck company that raises approximately two million Pekin ducks per year experienced an outbreak of Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) on nine farms over a 1-yr period. Owing to concerns that ...the bacteria was being spread from farm to farm, an investigation using serotyping and DNA fingerprinting was performed. The results revealed that there were three different strains of RA involved in the outbreak. One strain was spread from one farm to six other farms, while another strain from the same farm was spread to two other farms. These findings add additional proof of the value of DNA fingerprinting in disease outbreak investigations and further support the importance of implementing biosecurity protocols to stop the spread of disease-causing organisms.
