Many uses of gene trees implicitly assume that nominal species are
monophyletic in their alleles at the study locus. However, in well-sampled gene
trees, certain alleles in one species may appear ...more closely related to
alleles from different species than to other conspecific alleles. Such
deviations from species-level monophyly have a variety of causes and may lead
to erroneous evolutionary interpretations if undetected. The present paper
describes the causes and consequences of these paraphyletic and polyphyletic
patterns. It also provides a detailed literature survey of mitochondrial DNA
studies on low-level animal phylogeny and phylogeography, results from which
reveal the frequency of nonmonophyly and patterns of interpretation and
sampling. This survey detected species-level paraphyly or polyphyly in
23% of 2319 assayed species, demonstrating this phenomenon to be
statistically supported, taxonomically widespread, and far more common than
generally recognized. Our findings call for increased attention to sampling and
the interpretation of paraphyletic and polyphyletic gene trees in studies of
closely related taxa by systematists and population geneticists alike and thus
for a new tradition of "congeneric phylogeography."

Activation of the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) pathway leads to the biosynthesis of proinflammatory leukotriene lipid mediators. Genetic studies have associated 5-LO and its accessory protein, ...5-LO-activating protein, with cardiovascular disease, myocardial infarction and stroke. Here we show that 5-LO-positive macrophages localize to the adventitia of diseased mouse and human arteries in areas of neoangiogenesis and that these cells constitute a main component of aortic aneurysms induced by an atherogenic diet containing cholate in mice deficient in apolipoprotein E. 5-LO deficiency markedly attenuates the formation of these aneurysms and is associated with reduced matrix metalloproteinase-2 activity and diminished plasma macrophage inflammatory protein-1alpha (MIP-1alpha; also called CCL3), but only minimally affects the formation of lipid-rich lesions. The leukotriene LTD(4) strongly stimulates expression of MIP-1alpha in macrophages and MIP-2 (also called CXCL2) in endothelial cells. These data link the 5-LO pathway to hyperlipidemia-dependent inflammation of the arterial wall and to pathogenesis of aortic aneurysms through a potential chemokine intermediary route.

= 808) were collected to examine 13 benefits and attributes associated with liking a sport team, 3 attitude formation properties, and allegiance. A three-stage test of mediation using MLR revealed that attachment mediated the relationship between allegiance and Vicarious Achievement, Nostalgia, Star Player, Escape, Success, and Peer Group Acceptance. Results demonstrate that allegiance is the outcome of a process by which individuals develop stronger emotional reactions to, more functional knowledge about, and greater symbolic value for benefits and attributes associated with a sport team.

Introduction
Assess the relationship between direct measures of adiposity (total body fat mass, visceral adipose tissue, and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue) with the whole body and clinically relevant bone sites of the lumbar spine, and femoral neck areal bone mineral density (aBMD) in men and women.
Methods
This cross-sectional analysis was conducted utilizing de-identified data from the UK Biobank on participants (
n
= 3674) with available dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. Sex-stratified multiple linear regression was used to assess the relationship between adiposity measures and aBMD outcomes, controlling for age, race, total body lean mass (DXA), height, BMI class, physical activity, smoking, menopausal status (women), and hormone use (women).
Results
In men, significant interactions were observed between measures of adiposity and BMI on aBMD for the whole body and lumbar spine. Interactions indicated a positive relationship between adiposity and aBMD in men classified as normal weight, but an inverse relationship in men with elevated BMI. In women, significant interactions between adiposity measures and menopausal status were observed primarily for the whole body and femoral neck aBMD bone outcomes which indicated a negative relationship between adiposity and aBMD in premenopausal women, but a positive relationship in postmenopausal women.
Conclusion
Total body adiposity, abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue, and visceral adipose tissue were all significantly associated with aBMD in both men and women. The strength and direction of association were dependent on sex, BMI classification, and menopausal status (women).
We present observations of HESS J1640–465 with the Fermi-Large Area Telescope. The source is detected with high confidence as an emitter of high-energy gamma-rays. The spectrum lacks any evidence for ...the characteristic cutoff associated with emission from pulsars, indicating that the emission arises primarily from the pulsar wind nebula (PWN). Broadband modeling implies an evolved nebula with a low magnetic field resulting in a high γ-ray to X-ray flux ratio. The Fermi emission exceeds predictions of the broadband model, and has a steeper spectrum, possibly resulting from a distinct excess of low energy electrons similar to what is inferred for both the Vela X and Crab PWNe.
The Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi satellite observed a gamma-ray flare in the Crab Nebula lasting for approximately nine days in April of 2011. The source, which at optical wavelengths has ...a size of approx =11 lt-yr across, doubled its gamma-ray flux within eight hours. The peak photon flux was (186 + or - 6) x 10 super(-7) cm super(-2) s super(-1) above 100 MeV, which corresponds to a 30-fold increase compared to the average value. During the flare, a new component emerged in the spectral energy distribution, which peaked at an energy of (375 + or - 26) MeV at flare maximum. The observations imply that the emission region was likely relativistically beamed toward us and that variations in its motion are responsible for the observed spectral variability.
Muller (1942) and Mayr (1963) hypothesized that natural selection indirectly causes the evolution of reproductive barriers between allopatric populations by causing adaptive genetic divergence that ...pleiotropically promotes prezygotic or postzygotic incompatibility. Under this mechanism, herbivorous insect populations should be more prone to speciate if they are adapting to different host plants, because the evolution of reproductive isolation will be accelerated above the rate promoted by genetic drift and host-independent sources of selection alone. Although the Muller-Mayr hypothesis is widely accepted, little direct evidence has been collected in support of selection's role in allopatric speciation. This paper offers a method for isolating and evaluating the contribution of host plant-related natural selection pressures to the reproductive isolation between allopatric herbivore populations. The host-related selection hypothesis (HRSH) predicts that herbivore populations using different host plants should be more reproductively isolated than those using the same host, other things being equal. Here, I test this hypothesis using Neochlamisus bebbianae, an oligophagous leaf beetle with a geographically variable host range. In each of two sets of experiments (contrast I, contrast II), I compared two beetle populations (Georgia and New York) that use the same host (Acer) in nature and a third population that natively uses a different host (Betula in Oklahoma CI, Salix in Ontario CII). Experiments showed that 'different-host' populations were more strongly differentiated in hostuse traits (oviposition, host fidelity, feeding response, larval performance) than were 'same-host' populations and that each population most readily uses foliage from its native host. As predicted by the HRSH, sexual isolation was also greater between the adaptively divergent different-host populations (from Betula vs. Acer, from Salix vs. Acer) than between the same-host populations (from Acer), which were undifferentiated in host-use traits. Interpreting these results in a historical context provided by mtDNA sequences from test populations indicated: (1) that Acer- and Betula-associated N. bebbianae represent separate sibling species whose causal origins have been lost to history, and whose incomplete sexual isolation is fortified by host-associated ecological and 'physiological' isolation; and (2) that incipiently speciating Acer- and Salix-associated populations are more closely related to each other than are the two Acer-associated populations, which is consistent with the HRSH. This study thus illustrates the consequences of host-related selection for both the origin and maintenance of reproductive isolation. More important, it provides evidence that the pleiotropic effects of natural selection promote allopatric speciation.
The enzyme 12/15-lipoxygenase (12/15-LO) has been implicated in the oxidative modification of LDL. In a murine model, we tested the hypothesis that deletion of 12/15-LO decreases atherogenesis by ...reducing oxidant stress, as measured by 2 indices of lipid peroxidation: isoprostane generation and autoantibody formation to malondialdehyde (MDA)-LDL, an epitope of LDL formed as a result of oxidative modification.
12/15-LO-deficient (12/15-LO(-/-)) mice were crossed with apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE(-/-)) mice. At 10 weeks of age, atherosclerotic lesion initiation was significantly delayed in the double-knockout mice. The rate of lesion progression was diminished at 8 and 12 months, and even at 15 months, lesion size was reduced 50% (P<0.0005) compared with control apoE(-/-) mice. The urinary and plasma levels of the specific isoprostane 8,12-iso-iPF(2alpha)-VI, as well as IgG autoantibodies against MDA-LDL, were significantly reduced in the double-deficient mice in parallel with decreased atherosclerosis at all time points from 10 weeks to 15 months of age compared with apoE(-/-) controls.
Enzymatic action of 12/15-LO contributes significantly to atherosclerotic lesion initiation and propagation in this murine model. Strong positive correlations exist between lesion size, isoprostane levels, and MDA-LDL autoantibodies, providing in vivo evidence for an enzymatic (12/15-LO) component to lipid peroxidation and atherogenesis.
To what degree is the divergent adaptation responsible for life's phenotypic variety also responsible for generating the millions of species that manifest this variation? Theory predicts that ...ecological divergence among populations should promote reproductive isolation, and recent empirical studies provide support for this hypothesis in a limited number of specific taxa. However, the essential question of whether ecology plays a truly general role in speciation has yet to be systematically evaluated. Here we address this integral issue using an approach that adds an ecological dimension to comparative studies investigating the relationship between reproductive isolation and divergence time. Specifically, we quantify ecological divergence for >500 species pairs from eight plant, invertebrate, and vertebrate taxa and statistically isolate its association with reproductive isolation. This approach demonstrates a highly consistent and significant positive association between ecological divergence and reproductive isolation across taxa. This relationship was also observed across different aspects of ecological divergence and components of reproductive isolation. These findings are highly consistent with the hypothesis that ecological adaptation plays a fundamental and taxonomically general role in promoting reproductive isolation and speciation.
Atherosclerosis may be viewed as an inflammatory disease process that includes early oxidative modification of LDLs, leading to foam cell formation. This "oxidation hypothesis" has gained general ...acceptance in recent years, and evidence for the role of lipoxygenases in initiation of, or participation in, the oxidative process is accumulating. However, the relative contribution of macrophage-expressed lipoxygenases to atherogenesis in vivo remains unknown. Here, we provide in vivo evidence for the role of 12/15-lipoxygenase in atherogenesis and demonstrate diminished plasma IgG autoantibodies to oxidized LDL epitopes in 12/15-lipoxygenase knockout mice crossbred with atherosclerosis-prone apo E-deficient mice (apo E-/-/L-12LO-/-). In chow-fed 15-week-old apo E-/-/L-12LO-/- mice, the extent of lesions in whole-aorta en face preparations (198 +/- 60 microm2) was strongly reduced (P < 0.001, n = 12) when compared with 12/15-lipoxygenase-expressing controls (apo E-/-/L-12LO+/+), which showed areas of lipid deposition (15,700 +/- 2,688 microm2) in the lesser curvature of the aortic arch, branch points, and in the abdominal aorta. These results were observed despite cholesterol, triglyceride, and lipoprotein levels that were similar to those in apo E-deficient mice. Evidence for reduced lesion development was observed even at 1 year of age in apo E-/-/L-12LO-/- mice. The combined data indicate a role for 12/15-lipoxygenase in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and suggest that inhibition of this enzyme may decrease disease progression.
