Context.
The recent estimates of the 3D shape of the M/Xe-type triple asteroid system (216) Kleopatra indicated a density of ~5 g cm
−3
, which is by far the highest for a small Solar System body. ...Such a high density implies a high metal content as well as a low porosity which is not easy to reconcile with its peculiar “dumbbell” shape.
Aims.
Given the unprecedented angular resolution of the VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL camera, here, we aim to constrain the mass (via the characterization of the orbits of the moons) and the shape of (216) Kleopatra with high accuracy, hence its density.
Methods.
We combined our new VLT/SPHERE observations of (216) Kleopatra recorded during two apparitions in 2017 and 2018 with archival data from the W. M. Keck Observatory, as well as lightcurve, occultation, and delay-Doppler images, to derive a model of its 3D shape using two different algorithms (ADAM, MPCD). Furthermore, an
N
-body dynamical model allowed us to retrieve the orbital elements of the two moons as explained in the accompanying paper.
Results.
The shape of (216) Kleopatra is very close to an equilibrium dumbbell figure with two lobes and a thick neck. Its volume equivalent diameter (118.75 ± 1.40) km and mass (2.97 ± 0.32) × 10
18
kg (i.e., 56% lower than previously reported) imply a bulk density of (3.38 ± 0.50) g cm
−3
. Such a low density for a supposedly metal-rich body indicates a substantial porosity within the primary. This porous structure along with its near equilibrium shape is compatible with a formation scenario including a giant impact followed by reaccumulation. (216) Kleopatra’s current rotation period and dumbbell shape imply that it is in a critically rotating state. The low effective gravity along the equator of the body, together with the equatorial orbits of the moons and possibly rubble-pile structure, opens the possibility that the moons formed via mass shedding.
Conclusions.
(216) Kleopatra is a puzzling multiple system due to the unique characteristics of the primary. This system certainly deserves particular attention in the future, with the Extremely Large Telescopes and possibly a dedicated space mission, to decipher its entire formation history.
ABSTRACT
Future large adaptive telescopes will trigger new constraints for the calibration of adaptive optics (AO) systems equipped with pre-focal deformable mirrors (DMs). The image of the DM ...actuator grid, as seen by the wavefront sensor (WFS), may evolve during the operations because of the flexures of the opto-mechanical components present in the optical path. This will result in a degraded AO performance that will affect the scientific operation. To overcome this challenge, it will be necessary to regularly monitor and compensate for these DM/WFS mis-registrations, either by physically realigning some optical components or by updating the control matrix of the system. In this paper, we present a new strategy to track mis-registrations using a pseudo-synthetic model of the AO system. The method is based on an invasive approach where signals are acquired on-sky, before or during the scientific operations, and fed to the model to extract the mis-registration parameters. We introduce a method to compute the most sensitive modes to these mis-registrations that allows us to reduce the number of degrees of freedom required by the algorithm and to minimize the effect on the scientific performance. We demonstrate that, by using only a few of these well-selected signals, the method provides very good accuracy for parameter estimation, well under the targeted accuracy, and has a negligible effect on the scientific path. In addition, the method appears to be very robust to varying operating conditions of noise and atmospheric turbulence and it performs equally for both pyramid and Shack–Hartmann WFSs.
ABSTRACT
Adaptive optics (AO) restore the angular resolution of ground-based telescopes, but at the cost of delivering a time- and space-varying point spread function (PSF) with a complex shape. PSF ...knowledge is crucial for breaking existing limits on the measured accuracy of photometry and astrometry in science observations. In this paper, we concentrate our analyses of the anisoplanatism signature only on to the PSF. For large-field observations (20 arcmin) with single-conjugated AO, PSFs are strongly elongated due to anisoplanatism that manifests itself as three different terms for laser guide star (LGS) systems: angular, focal and tilt anisoplanatism. First, we propose a generalized model that relies on a point-wise decomposition of the phase and encompasses the non-stationarity of LGS systems. We demonstrate that it is more accurate and less computationally demanding than existing models: it agrees with end-to-end physical-optics simulations to within 0.1 per cent of PSF measurables, such as the Strehl ratio, FWHM and the fraction of variance unexplained (FVU). Secondly, we study off-axis PSF modelling with respect to the $C_n^2(h)$ profile (heights and fractional weights). For 10-mclass telescopes, PSF morphology is estimated at the 1 per cent level as long as we model the atmosphere with at least seven layers, whose heights and weights are known with precisions of 200 m and 10 per cent, respectively. As a verification test, we used the Canada’s National Research Council – Herzberg NFIRAOS Optical Simulator (HeNOS) testbed data, featuring four lasers. We highlight the capability of retrieving off-axis PSF characteristics within 10 per cent of the FVU, which complies with the expected range from the sensitivity analysis. Our new off-axis PSF modelling method lays the groundwork for testing on-sky in the near future.
We report the discovery of a bright, brown dwarf companion to the star HIP 64892, imaged with VLT/SPHERE during the SHINE exoplanet survey. The host is a B9.5V member of the Lower-Centaurus-Crux ...subgroup of the Scorpius Centaurus OB association. The measured angular separation of the companion (1.2705 ± 0.0023”) corresponds to a projected distance of 159 ± 12 AU. We observed the target with the dual-band imaging and long-slit spectroscopy modes of the IRDIS imager to obtain its spectral energy distribution (SED) and astrometry. In addition, we reprocessed archival NACO L-band data, from which we also recover the companion. Its SED is consistent with a young (<30 Myr), low surface gravity object with a spectral type of M9γ ± 1. From comparison with the BT-Settl atmospheric models we estimate an effective temperature of Teff = 2600 ± 100 K, and comparison of the companion photometry to the COND evolutionary models yields a mass of ~29−37 MJ at the estimated age of 16−7+15 $16^{+15}_{-7}$16−7+15 Myr for the system. The star HIP 64892 is a rare example of an extreme-mass ratio system (q ~ 0.01) and will be useful for testing models relating to the formation and evolution of such low-mass objects.
Context. The low wind effect (LWE) refers to a characteristic set of quasi-static wavefront aberrations seen consistently by the SPHERE instrument when dome-level wind speeds drop below 3 ms−1. The ...LWE produces bright low-order speckles in the stellar point-spread function (PSF), which severely limit the contrast performance of SPHERE under otherwise optimal observing conditions. Aims. In this paper we propose the Fast & Furious (F&F) phase diversity algorithm as a viable software-only solution for real-time LWE compensation, which would utilise image sequences from the SPHERE differential tip-tilt sensor (DTTS) and apply corrections via reference slope offsets on the AO system’s Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. Methods. We evaluated the closed-loop performance of F&F on the MITHIC high-contrast test-bench, under conditions emulating LWE-affected DTTS images. These results were contrasted with predictive simulations for a variety of convergence tests, in order to assess the expected performance of an on-sky implementation of F&F in SPHERE. Results. The algorithm was found to be capable of returning LWE-affected images to Strehl ratios of greater than 90% within five iterations, for all appropriate laboratory test cases. These results are highly representative of predictive simulations, and demonstrate stability of the algorithm against a wide range of factors including low image signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), small image field of view, and amplitude errors. It was also found in simulation that closed-loop stability can be preserved down to image S/N as low as five while still improving overall wavefront quality, allowing for reliable operation even on faint targets. Conclusions. The Fast & Furious algorithm is an extremely promising solution for real-time compensation of the LWE, which can operate simultaneously with science observations and may be implemented in SPHERE without requiring additional hardware. The robustness and relatively large effective dynamic range of F&F also make it suitable for general wavefront optimisation applications, including the co-phasing of segmented ELT-class telescopes.
Context. Debris disks are the natural by-products of the planet formation process. Scattered or polarized light observations are mostly sensitive to small dust grains that are released from the ...grinding down of bigger planetesimals. Aims. High angular resolution observations at optical wavelengths can provide key constraints on the radial and azimuthal distribution of the small dust grains. These constraints can help us better understand where most of the dust grains are released upon collisions. Methods. We present SPHERE/ZIMPOL observations of the debris disk around HR 4796 A, and we modeled the radial profiles along several azimuthal angles of the disk with a code that accounts for the effect of stellar radiation pressure. This enabled us to derive an appropriate description for the radial and azimuthal distribution of the small dust grains. Results. Even though we only modeled the radial profiles along, or close to, the semi-major axis of the disk, our best-fit model is not only in good agreement with our observations but also with previously published datasets (from near-infrared to sub-mm wavelengths). We find that the reference radius is located at 76.4 ± 0.4 au, and the disk has an eccentricity of 0.076−0.010+0.016 $0.076_{-0.010}^{+0.016}$ 0.076−0.010+0.016 with the pericenter located on the front side of the disk (north of the star). We find that small dust grains must be preferentially released near the pericenter to explain the observed brightness asymmetry. Conclusions. Even though parent bodies spend more time near the apocenter, the brightness asymmetry implies that collisions happen more frequently near the pericenter of the disk. Our model can successfully reproduce the shape of the outer edge of the disk without requiring an outer planet shaping the debris disk. With a simple treatment for the effect of the radiation pressure, we conclude that the parent planetesimals are located in a narrow ring of about 3.6 au in width.
Aims.
To interpret adaptive-optics observations of (216) Kleopatra, we need to describe an evolution of multiple moons orbiting an extremely irregular body and include their mutual interactions. Such ...orbits are generally non-Keplerian and orbital elements are not constants.
Methods.
Consequently, we used a modified
N
-body integrator, which was significantly extended to include the multipole expansion of the gravitational field up to the order

= 10. Its convergence was verified against the ‘brute-force’ algorithm. We computed the coefficients

for Kleopatra’s shape, assuming a constant bulk density. For Solar System applications, it was also necessary to implement a variable distance and geometry of observations. Our

metric then accounts for the absolute astrometry, the relative astrometry (second moon with respect to the first), angular velocities, and silhouettes, constraining the pole orientation. This allowed us to derive the orbital elements of Kleopatra’s two moons.
Results.
Using both archival astrometric data and new VLT/SPHERE observations (ESO LP 199.C-0074), we were able to identify the true periods of the moons,

Context. Over the past decades, several interplanetary missions have studied small bodies in situ, leading to major advances in our understanding of their geological and geophysical properties. These ...missions, however, have had a limited number of targets. Among them, the NASA Dawn mission has characterised in detail the topography and albedo variegation across the surface of asteroid (4) Vesta down to a spatial resolution of ~20 m pixel−1 scale. Aims. Here our aim was to determine how much topographic and albedo information can be retrieved from the ground with VLT/SPHERE in the case of Vesta, having a former space mission (Dawn) providing us with the ground truth that can be used as a benchmark. Methods. We observed Vesta with VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL as part of our ESO large programme (ID 199.C-0074) at six different epochs, and deconvolved the collected images with a parametric point spread function (PSF). We then compared our images with synthetic views of Vesta generated from the 3D shape model of the Dawn mission, on which we projected Vesta’s albedo information. Results. We show that the deconvolution of the VLT/SPHERE images with a parametric PSF allows the retrieval of the main topographic and albedo features present across the surface of Vesta down to a spatial resolution of ~20–30 km. Contour extraction shows an accuracy of ~1 pixel (3.6 mas). The present study provides the very first quantitative estimate of the accuracy of ground-based adaptive-optics imaging observations of asteroid surfaces. Conclusions. In the case of Vesta, the upcoming generation of 30–40 m telescopes (ELT, TMT, GMT) should in principle be able to resolve all of the main features present across its surface, including the troughs and the north–south crater dichotomy, provided that they operate at the diffraction limit.
