Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is one of the most common heart diseases in dogs. The disease progresses faster in Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS) dogs and occurs at an earlier age. QT ...interval length reflects abnormalities in ventricular repolarization which may predispose to the formation of fatal arrhythmias such as torsades de pointes. A fast and accurate assessment is therefore essential. The study aimed to examine the changes in QT duration in MMVD cases of CKCS and to calculate the corrected QT durations with Bazett’s formula in various stages of the disease. The study included 20 CKCS dogs of both genders, various ages and weights, and different stages of MMVD (n=6 in B1 stage, n=6 in B2 stage, and n=8 in C stage), and 5 healthy CKCS which were included in the control group. Clinical, radiological, hematological, biochemical, echocardiographic, and electrocardiographic examinations were performed. The corrected QT interval duration in the MMVD group was longer than the control (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference between B1, B2, and C. It was concluded that the corrected QT interval can give a significant distinction between healthy and MMVD CKCS dogs.
Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is one of the most common heart diseases in Cavalier King Charles spaniel (CKCS) dogs. The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) uses ...clinical, echocardiographic, and radiographic criteria to diagnose the disease, but measurement of vertebral left atrial size (VLAS) provides a simpler assessment. The aim of this study was to determine VLAS values in MMVD cases of CKCS and to investigate their clinical significance at different MMVD stages. Eighteen CKCS dogs of both sexes, different ages and weights, and different MMVD stages (6 at B1 stage, 6 at B2 stage, and 6 at C stage) were included in the study, as well as 6 healthy CKCS as control group A. We performed clinical, radiological, and echocardiographic examinations. VHS and VLAS values were significantly higher in the MMVD group than in the control group (p<0.001). VLAS showed high diagnostic accuracy in the detection of LA enlargement (area under the curve AUC: 0.98, cutoff ≥ 2.25, sensitivity: 88%, specificity: 100%, p<0.001). We also found high positive correlations between the VLAS and other values (LA /Ao, LVIDDn, and VHS) (r=0.88, r=0.88, and r=0.86, respectively) (p<0.001). It has been concluded that a VLAS value ≥2.25 can provide a meaningful diagnosis of left atrial enlargement in dogs with MMVD CKCS.
Background A spider monkey with severe dyspnea was referred to our clinic.
Methods and Results Radiographs revealed an enlarged cardiac silhouette. Ventricular tachycardia and ST segment depression ...were also diagnosed after an ECG. These findings coupled with the postmortem examination confirmed dilatative cardiomyopathy.
Conclusions This case is worthy of presentation since dilatative cardiomyopathy has been rarely encountered in spider monkeys.
Cardiomyopathies are the most common type of cardiac diseases in cats. Although some normal echocardiographic values for cats have been published, there are variations based on breeds and gender. The ...objective of this study is to determine normal reference values for M-mode echocardiographic parameters in nonsedated healthy adult Van cats and to compare those values with data reported for nonsedated healthy cats of other breeds. A total of 40 clinically healthy Van cats of both sexes belonging to the Van Cat Research and Application Center of Yuzuncu Yil University were used. Body weight (BW) and 16 M-mode echocardiographic variables were measured in 40 healthy Van cats. The effect of gender and age on each echocardiographic parameter was analyzed and the relationship between BW and each parameter investigated. There was a significant relationship between gender and left atrial dimension during ventricular systole (LAD) and aortic root dimension at end-diastole (AOD) as well as between BW and interventricular septal thickness at end-diastole (IVSd) and end-systole (IVSs), left ventricular internal dimension at end-diastole (LVIDd), left ventricular posterior wall thickness at end-diastole (LVPWd), LAD, AOD, the left ventricular end diastolic volume (EDV) and the stroke volume (SV). A relationship between age and the SV parameter alone was also established. This present study is the first work on cardiac reference values for Van cats highlighting the differences in some M-mode echocardiographic parameters of healthy adult Van cats and other cat breeds, which should be considered when interpreting echocardiographic findings, in order to draw the correct conclusions regarding cardiac health.
Chronic renal failure (CRF) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in dogs. The aim of this study is to investigate the renal Doppler measurements, blood hypertension and acid-base levels ...in dogs with chronic renal failure. Twenty-six dogs previously diagnosed with chronic renal failure were compared with twenty healthy dogs. A complete blood cell, biochemical profile, urinalysis, blood gasses, blood pressure were analyzed and changes in renal blood flow were measured by renal Doppler ultrasonography. The dogs with CRF had significantly higher serum blood urea nitrogen, creatinine and phosphorus concentration, significantly lower packed cell volume, and urine specific gravity than control dogs. Positive correlation was determined between serum creatinine levels and renal Doppler indices. There were significant decreases in blood pH and bicarbonate. Indirect blood pressure measurements were slightly increased in CRF dogs. Renal Doppler measurement was observed as a helpful tool in diagnosing the CRF in dogs. Identification of acidosis and hypertension may help in developing treatments that slow the rate of progression of chronic renal failure.
Both resistive index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) estimate vascular resistance within an artery. But, there are only few studies reporting normal values of the renal RI and PI in healthy cats but ...no study could be found with regard to Turkish Angora breed of cats. So, we decided to determine the normal values of intra-renal RI and PI in non-sedated, non-hypertensive clinically normal Turkish Angora breed cats. For this purpose 20 each of mixed-breed and Turkish Angora breed, different ages and sex healthy cats constituted the study groups. At the result of the pulsed wave doppler ultrasonographic examinations mean values for RI and PI were 0.61±0.04 and 0.97±0.17 for mixed-breed cats; 0.60±0.07 and 1.16±0.34 for Turkish Angora breed cats were recorded, respectively. No significant differences were noted between the groups. At the result, we determined that, they were in normal limits as previously described in clinically healthy Turkish Angora breed of cats.
The maedi-visna virus (MVV) is distributed worldwide and, to date, no epidemiological surveys have been
carried out using ELISA testing in Turkey. The aims of this study were as follows: i) to verify the diagnostic performance
of a home-made ELISA test (HM-ELISA) using Turkish ovine sera in comparison with other commercially available
ELISA tests, and ii) to perform a preliminary epidemiological survey in İstanbul province. The MVV seroprevalence in
İstanbul province was 15.3%. Older sheep were 5 times more likely to be positive than younger animals, ewes were 3
times more likely to be positive than rams, and all the Red Karaman and White Karaman sheep tested were seronegative.
The performance of the HM-ELISA and that of the other commercial tests using Turkish ovine serum samples was
similar; therefore, the HM-ELISA test is suitable for use in extensive epidemiological surveys and eradication programs
in Turkey.
