MicroRNAs are small noncoding transcripts that posttranscriptionally regulate gene expression via base-pairing complementarity. Their role in cancer can be related to tumor suppression or oncogenic ...function. Moreover, they have been linked to processes recognized as hallmarks of cancer, such as apoptosis, invasion, metastasis, and proliferation. Particularly, one of the first oncomiRs found upregulated in a variety of cancers, such as gliomas, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer, was microRNA-21 (miR-21). Some of its target genes associated with cancer are PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog), PDCD4 (programmed cell death protein 4), RECK (reversion-inducing cysteine-rich protein with Kazal motifs), and STAT3 (signal transducer activator of transcription 3). As a result, miR-21 has been proposed as a plausible diagnostic and prognostic biomarker, as well as a therapeutic target for several types of cancer. Currently, research and clinical trials to inhibit miR-21 through anti-miR-21 oligonucleotides and ADM-21 are being conducted. As all of the evidence suggests, miR-21 is involved in carcinogenic processes; therefore, inhibiting it could have effects on more than one type of cancer. However, whether miR-21 can be used as a tissue-specific biomarker should be analyzed with caution. Consequently, the purpose of this review is to outline the available information and recent advances regarding miR-21 as a potential biomarker in the clinical setting and as a therapeutic target in cancer to highlight its importance in the era of precision medicine.
Abstract
We present Very Large Array (VLA) and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the close (0.″3 = 90 au separation) protobinary system SVS 13. We detect two small ...circumstellar disks (radii ∼12 and ∼9 au in dust, and ∼30 au in gas) with masses of ∼0.004–0.009
M

for VLA 4A (the western component) and ∼0.009–0.030
M

for VLA 4B (the eastern component). A circumbinary disk with prominent spiral arms extending ∼500 au and a mass of ∼0.052

appears to be in the earliest stages of formation. The dust emission is more compact and with a very high optical depth toward VLA 4B, while toward VLA 4A the dust column density is lower, allowing the detection of stronger molecular transitions. We infer rotational temperatures of ∼140 K, on scales of ∼30 au, across the whole source, and a rich chemistry. Molecular transitions typical of hot corinos are detected toward both protostars, being stronger toward VLA 4A, with several ethylene glycol transitions detected only toward this source. There are clear velocity gradients, which we interpret in terms of infall plus rotation of the circumbinary disk, and pure rotation of the circumstellar disk of VLA 4A. We measured orbital proper motions and determined a total stellar mass of 1

. From the molecular kinematics, we infer the geometry and orientation of the system, and stellar masses of ∼0.26

for VLA 4A and ∼0.60

The monitoring of ecosystems and forests is an urgent requirement in the current framework of global change. It is particularly necessary on oceanic islands where their rich biodiversity is highly ...vulnerable, with many narrow-ranged endemic species. Quantifying and mapping forest health through key ecological variables are essential steps for management, but it will also be challenging and may require a lot of resources. Remote sensing has the potential to be a very useful tool to assess the development and conservation status of forests. We assessed the applicability of the light detection and ranging (LiDAR) on the laurel forests of La Gomera, making allometric equations for various measurements of the forest structure, linking field inventory from 2019 and 2017 LiDAR data through standard linear regressions. Decision trees and logistic regressions were also used to assess the performance of LiDAR in the recognition of young-growth and old-growth laurel forests. The obtained allometric models were a good fit in general and their predictions were in line with already known data. Likewise, decision tree and logistic regression to distinguish young-growth and old-growth forests had a similar performance in both cases, with a high to medium-high degree of accuracy. Therefore, LiDAR was revealed to be a useful tool for the monitoring of the laurel forest by the managers.
Compounds containing carbamate moieties and their derivatives can generate serious public health threats and environmental problems due their high potential toxicity. In this study, a quantitative ...structure–toxicity relationship (QSTR) model has been developed by using one hundred seventy-eight carbamate derivatives whose toxicities in rats (oral administration) have been evaluated. The QSRT model was rigorously validated by using either tested or untested compounds falling within the applicability domain of the model. A structure-based evaluation by docking from a series of carbamates with acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was carried out. The toxicity of carbamates was predicted using physicochemical, structural, and quantum molecular descriptors employing a DFT approach. A statistical treatment was developed; the QSRT model showed a determination coefficient (R2) and a leave-one-out coefficient (Q2LOO) of 0.6584 and 0.6289, respectively.
The Anthropocene era demands a future alternative to the current state of play. The aim of this study is to analyze spatial and climate governance and policy through a critical geographical study of ...the island of Mallorca (Spain), an example of the model of urban development and tourism growth that has generated acute environmental impacts. Beginning with the European Union and Spain, the work then narrows its focus to the case study of Mallorca. The study is based on a review of the academic literature, statistical sources, and an analysis of the content of spatial and climate policy in Spain and the Balearic Islands. The work reflects on the flawed spatial planning responses to climate change and outlines strategies to adopt more radical measures for effective climate action. The work identifies six main shortcomings and makes proposals to tackle the challenges of the Anthropocene in Mallorca, responding to each of the deficiencies detected. The article seeks to encourage reflection and proposes key strategies for spatial governance and climate policy to lend coherence to the fight against climate change.
•Physicians rated the anatomists as teachers first (50.4%), next as physicians (41%), then as scientists (32.5%) and lastly as biologists (1.9%).•The opinion on the dissection usefulness for the ...undergraduates and the anatomist’s professional identity differed among physicians’ genders.•There was a disparity between the opinions of physicians and anatomists as to whether the dissection shall influence the behavior of students towards the patient.•A progressive reduction in dissecting human bodies has been detected during undergraduate medical training over the years.•The practice of dissecting in the medical degree needs to be reinforced. It serves to acquire anatomical knowledge but also skills and demeanors.
Studies abound regarding the views of faculty anatomists and medical students on the importance of anatomy and the dissection of human bodies, but very little is known about the views of practicing physicians.
A survey was distributed among physicians and surgeons practicing in Spain in order to find out their views on the practice and consequences of human dissection by undergraduate students of medicine. The most relevant definition to qualify faculty anatomists of medical schools was also requested. Responses were repeatedly clustered into characteristic subgroups for analysis.
In total, 536 physicians and surgeons belonging to 36 different specialties in seven Spanish hospitals responded to the survey. The results highlighted two main facts. Firstly, faculty anatomists were perceived as teachers, above any other professional identity (namely: physician, biologist or scientist); nonetheless, the ascription of identities varied between specialties (p=0.009); and it also depended on whether the respondents had dissected in their undergraduate degree (p=0.03) and on the respondent’s gender (p=0.03). Secondly, physicians and surgeons confirmed that dissecting human cadavers serves the undergraduate student not only for acquiring anatomical knowledge, but also essential skills and attitudes, including professionalism.
The results strongly suggest that dissection practice should be reinforced and enriched in undergraduate medical school. As this is important in itself, the results of the study could also help with the development of strategies to alleviate the current shortage of adequately trained anatomists for medical degrees.
Background and aim
There are few studies of urinary biomarkers and histopathologic features in lupus nephritis (LN). The aim was to analyze the correlation between a wide panel of urinary biomarkers ...and serum concentrations of anti C1q antibodies with histological items of activity and chronicity on kidney biopsy in LN patients.
Methods
Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) according to American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria were included. LN diagnosis was based on ACR criteria. Histologic features of activity and chronicity indices were analyzed according to the Austin classification. Serum Anti C1q levels were determined by commercial ELISA. Urinary levels of transferrin, ceruloplasmin (CP), VCAM-1, TWEAK, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein were measured by commercial ELISA.
Results
We included 120 SLE patients (81% female, mean age 33.1 ± 9.3 years, 59.4% Mestizo, 37.8% Afro-Latin American): 64% had LN. Kidney biopsy was performed in 55 patients, but only 37 were made in our center. Anti C1q antibodies were associated with endocapillary proliferation. In patients with cellular crescents, urinary concentrations of CP were significantly higher. In patients with a chronicity index (CI) ≥ 4, fibrous crescents, tubular atrophy, and interstitial fibrosis, urinary MCP-1 levels were higher.
Conclusions
In SLE patients, serum anti C1q antibodies and urinary CP were associated with activity on kidney biopsy and MCP-1 with chronic damage. This panel of biomarkers could be validated in larger, multi-ethnic population as a complementary tool for better stratification of LN patients.
Key Points
• Urinary biomarkers are complementary useful tools for the assessment of SLE patients.
• Urinary levels of CP correlated with activity findings on kidney biopsy in LN patients.
• Urinary levels of MCP-1 correlated with chronic damage, especially with fibrous crescents, tubular atrophy, and interstitial fibrosis.
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are evaginations of the cytoplasmic membrane, containing nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, enzymes, and toxins. EVs participate in various bacterial physiological ...processes.
interacts and communicates with the host skin.
EVs may have an essential role in this communication mechanism, modulating the immunological environment. This work aimed to evaluate if
EVs can modulate cytokine production by keratinocytes in vitro and in vivo using the imiquimod-induced psoriasis murine model.
EVs were obtained from a commensal strain (ATC12228EVs) and a clinical isolated strain (983EVs). EVs from both origins induced IL-6 expression in HaCaT keratinocyte cultures; nevertheless, 983EVs promoted a higher expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines VEGF-A, LL37, IL-8, and IL-17F than ATCC12228EVs. Moreover, in vivo imiquimod-induced psoriatic skin treated with ATCC12228EVs reduced the characteristic psoriatic skin features, such as acanthosis and cellular infiltrate, as well as VEGF-A, IL-6, KC, IL-23, IL-17F, IL-36γ, and IL-36R expression in a more efficient manner than 983EVs; however, in contrast, Foxp3 expression did not significantly change, and IL-36 receptor antagonist (IL-36Ra) was found to be increased. Our findings showed a distinctive immunological profile induction that is dependent on the clinical or commensal EV origin in a mice model of skin-like psoriasis. Characteristically, proteomics analysis showed differences in the EVs protein content, dependent on origin of the isolated EVs. Specifically, in ATCC12228EVs, we found the proteins glutamate dehydrogenase, ornithine carbamoyltransferase, arginine deiminase, carbamate kinase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, phenol-soluble β1/β2 modulin, and polyglycerol phosphate α-glucosyltransferase, which could be involved in the reduction of lesions in the murine imiquimod-induced psoriasis skin. Our results show that the commensal ATCC12228EVs have a greater protective/attenuating effect on the murine imiquimod-induced psoriasis by inducing IL-36Ra expression in comparison with EVs from a clinical isolate of

This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to provide scientific evidence regarding the effects of training on respiratory muscle training’s impact with the PowerBreath®. A systematic analysis ...based on the PRISMA guides and a conducted research structured around the bases of Web of Science, Scopus, Medline/PubMed, SciELO y Cochrane Library Plus. Six articles published before January 2021 were included. The documentation and quantification of heterogeneity in every meta-analysis were directed through Cochran’s Q test and the statistic I2; additionally, a biased publication analysis was made using funnel plots, whose asymmetry was quantified Egger’s regression. The methodological quality was assessed through McMaster’s. PowerBreath® administering a ≥ 15% resistive load of the maximum inspiratory pressure (PIM) achieves significant improvements (54%) in said pressure within 4 weeks of commencing the inspiratory muscle training. The maximal volume of oxygen (VO2max) considerable enhancements was achieved from the 6 weeks associated with the maximum inspiratory pressure ≥ 21.5% post inspiratory muscle training onwards. Conversely, a significant blood lactate concentration decrement occurred from the 4th week of inspiratory muscle training, after a maximum inspiratory pressure ≥ 6.8% increment. PowerBreath® is a useful device to stimulate sport performance and increase pulmonary function.
