Abstract We present first results obtained with a prototype 4D-tracking demonstrator, using sensors and electronics developed within the TimeSPOT project, and tested on a positive charged pion beam ...at CERN SPS. The setup consists of five small tracking layers in a row, having area of about 3 mm 2 each, three of which equipped with 3D-trench silicon sensors and two with 3D-column diamond sensors. The five layers are then read-out by a KC705 Xilinx board on a PC. We describe the demonstrator structure and operation and illustrate preliminary results on its tracking capabilities.
A detailed analysis of transverse momentum spectra of several identified hadrons in high energy collisions within the canonical framework of the statistical model of hadronization is performed. The ...study of particle momentum spectra requires an extension of the statistical model formalism used to handle particle multiplicities, which is described in detail starting from a microcanonical treatment of single hadronizing clusters. Also, a new treatment of extra strangeness suppression is presented which is based on the enforcement of fixed numbers of \(s\bar{s}\) pairs in the primary hadrons. The considered center-of-mass energies range from \(\simeq 10\) to 30 GeV in hadronic collisions (\(\pi p, pp\) and Kp) and from \(\simeq\) 15 to 35 GeV in \(e^+e^-\) collisions. The effect of the decay chain following hadron generation is accurately and exhaustively taken into account by a newly proposed numerical method. The exact \({\vec p}_{\mathrm{T}}\) conservation at low energy and the increasing hard parton emission at high energy bound the validity of the presently taken approach within a limited center-of-mass energy range. However, within this region, a clear consistency is found between the temperature parameter extracted from the present analysis and that obtained from fits to average hadron multiplicities in the same collision systems. This finding indicates that in the hadronization process the production of different particle species and their momentum spectra are two closely related phenomena governed by one parameter.

The ELI-NP facility (Extreme Light Infrastructure-Nuclear Physics) will deliver an intense and almost monochromatic gamma beam for frontier research in nuclear physics. Peculiar devices and ...techniques have been developed to measure and monitor the beam parameters during the commissioning and the operational phase. In this work we will present the Compton Spectrometer, designed to reconstruct the γ beam energy spectrum, by measuring the energy and the position of Compton scattered electrons. The energy and the angle of the scattered electron are measured by a High Purity Germanium detector and a double sided silicon strip detector. The associated photon is detected in coincidence with the electron by barium fluoride (BaF2) crystals for trigger purpose. In this work we report the status of the characterization carried out on the detectors composing the spectrometer.

The performance of the muon identification in LHCb is extracted from data using muons and hadrons produced in J/psi arrow right mu super(+) mu super(-) , Lambda super(0) arrow right ppi super(-) and ...D* super(+) arrow right pi super(+)D super(0)(K super(-)pi super(+)) decays. The muon identification procedure is based on the pattern of hits in the muon chambers. A momentum dependent binary requirement is used to reduce the probability of hadrons to be misidentified as muons to the level of 1%, keeping the muon efficiency in the range of 95-98%. As further refinement, a likelihood is built for the muon and non-muon hypotheses. Adding a requirement on this likelihood that provides a total muon efficiency at the level of 93%, the hadron misidentification probabilities are below 0.6%.
The LHCb experiment has collected more than 1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity in 2010 and 2011 and is producing a large amount of results in beauty and charmed meson physics. An overview of the most ...recent results on rare B decays, CP violation, and charmless B meson decays will be given along with an outlook to the physics perspectives and to the LHCb upgrade.
Track reconstruction at future hadronic colliders such as FCC-hh poses non negligible challenges due to the expected unprecedented levels of radiation affecting the tracking detectors. Detectors ...featuring excellent spatial and time resolution as well as very high radiation hardness are deemed to be essential for efficient tracking at future experiments. 3D Diamond pixel sensors are considered very promising candidates to fulfil these requirements as they pair the well known excellent timing characteristics and radiation hardness of diamond. We report on the timing characterisation of innovative 3D pixel diamond detectors with electrodes obtained by a laser graphitisation technique optimised for high time resolution. Results of a test beam provide for the first time a time resolution well below 100 ps with an efficiency larger than 99%. Hybridisation of the sensors with a dedicated timing ASIC is also presented for the first time.

Tracking detectors for the future hadronic machines are expected to stand an extreme level of radiation and to provide at the same time high space and time resolutions. Diamond detectors satisfy both ...of the latter requirements and, in addition, a 3D geometry with thin columnar resistive electrodes orthogonal to the diamond surface enhances the natural radiation tolerance and response speed of this material. We report on the timing characterization of a 3D pixel diamond detector prototype fabricated, by laser graphitization with a 55 × 55 μm2 pixel geometry, in Firenze. Results of a tests beam provide a time resolution well below 100 ps with an efficiency larger than 99%.

The gamma-beam characterization system, designed by the EuroGammaS collaboration, consists of four elements: a Compton spectrometer that measures the gamma energy spectrum; a sampling calorimeter for a fast combined measurement of the beam average energy and its intensity, which will be used also as a monitor during machine commissioning and development; a nuclear resonant scattering system for absolute energy inter-calibration of the other detectors; and a gamma beam profile imager to be used for alignment and diagnostics purposes. The collimation and characterization system will be presented in this article. These systems have already been built and tested, while the delivery at ELI-NP facility and the final commissioning is scheduled by Fall 2018.

ELI-NP-GBS is a high-brilliance gamma source that will produce monochromatic beams in the energy range 0.2–19.5 MeV through inverse Compton scattering. In order to obtain a monochromatic beam a ...collimation of the emission is necessary. Depending on the energy, the angular aperture required to provide the design bandwidth ΔE/E=0.5% is between 70 and 700 μrad. This collimation is provided by a stack of 14 tungsten slits, arranged with a relative rotation around the beam axis, so that the overlap will be a continuously adjustable aperture. To monitor the operation and alignment of the collimation, a set of detectors will provide a complete characterization of the gamma beam, including the measurement of the transverse spatial distribution. For this task a gamma beam profile imager based on a thin scintillator screen and a high-resolution CCD-camera was developed. In this work we briefly present the status of the collimation system and beam profile imager, which were designed, assembled and are currently under test at INFN-Ferrara laboratories.
