Sebaceous adenoma (SA) is a rare solitary tumor that preferentially affects the forehead and scalp. The objective of this case report was to determine the efficacy and safety of a 10,600-nm carbon ...dioxide (CO
2
) laser device in the treatment of large scalp SA, using a new scanning system which allows to speed up the removal of the lesion. A 65-year-old male with SA on the scalp area underwent one session with the CO
2
laser system. For this procedure, a new scanner system with 7-inch or 4-inch focal handpieces were used. A local anesthesia with lidocaine was performed before laser treatment. Some possible side effects such as dyschromia, burning sensation, bleeding and mild to moderate post-treatment erythema, itching, crusting, and edema, were checked. In order to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment, clinical photos that documented the patient lesion were captured before treatment and at 1 month of follow-up. The clinical and aesthetic results observed after laser procedure were excellent, with a complete remission of patient’s scalp SA lesion at 4 weeks’ follow-up. Patient satisfaction was very high, and no side effects were observed. This laser system technology allows for precise, effective, and targeted action on the lesions treated while simultaneously protecting the surrounding areas, ensuring the best possible re-epithelialization.
The fourth most common healthy skin phenomenon is aging.
To assess the efficacy of Nd:YAG laser with a new handpiece for the treatment of wrinkles and skin laxity.
A total of 30 patients underwent ...three laser sessions at 1-month intervals. The treated areas were cheek, perioral, periocular, and forehead. The visual analog scale, Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS), and a photographic evaluation were performed before and at 3 months follow-up after the last treatment.
After three treatment sessions, an improvement of the patient's skin texture with a reduction of wrinkles was observed. The GAIS score was no change 3%, improved 37%, much improved 57%, and very much improved 3%. The average pain score was 2.6 ± 0.5. None of the adverse effects monitored was detected.
Laser treatments stimulate collagen without causing epidermal damage, which results in less disability time and postoperative awkwardness.
The αs2-casein is one of the phosphoproteins secreted in all ruminants' milk, and it is the most hydrophilic of all caseins. However, this important gene (
) has not been characterized in detail in ...buffaloes with only two alleles detected (reported as alleles A and B), and no association studies with milk traits have been carried out unlike what has been achieved for other species of ruminants. In this study, we sequenced the whole gene of two Mediterranean river buffalo homozygotes for the presence/absence of the nucleotide C (g.7539G>C) realized at the donor splice site of exon 7 and, therefore, responsible for the skipping of the same exon at mRNA level (allele B). A high genetic variability was found all over the two sequenced
alleles. In particular, 74 polymorphic sites were found in introns, six in the promoter, and three SNPs in the coding region (g.11072C>T, g.12803A>T, and g.14067A>G) with two of them responsible for amino acid replacements. Considering this genetic diversity, those found in the database and the SNP at the donor splice site of exon 7, it is possible to deduce at least eight different alleles (
A, B, B1, B2, C, D, E, and F) responsible for seven different possible translations of the buffalo αs2-casein. Haplotype data analysis suggests an evolutionary pathway of buffalo
gene consistent with our proposal that the published allele
A is the ancestral αs2-CN form, and the B2 probably arises from interallelic recombination (single crossing) between the alleles D and B (or B1). The allele
C is of new identification, while
B, B1, and B2 are deleted alleles because all are characterized by the mutation g.7539G>C. Two SNPs (g.7539G>C and g.14067A>G) were genotyped in 747 Italian buffaloes, and major alleles had a relative frequency of 0.83 and 0.51, respectively. An association study between these SNPs and milk traits including fatty acid composition was carried out. The SNP g.14067A>G showed a significant association (
< 0.05) on the content of palmitic acid in buffalo milk, thus suggesting its use in marker-assisted selection programs aiming for the improvement of buffalo milk fatty acid composition.
The authors evaluated their long-term experience with combined-modality, conservative treatment in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
In total, 121 patients with T2, T3, or T4 bladder ...cancer (mean age, 63 years; ratio of men to women, 3:1) underwent induction by transurethral resection (TUR) of the tumor and received 2 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy (RT) (n = 43 patients) or radiochemotherapy (RCT) (n = 78 patients). Six weeks after RT or RCT, responses were evaluated by restaging TUR. Patients who achieved a complete response (CR) were observed at regular intervals. In patients who had persistent or recurrent invasive tumor, further treatment was recommended.
Local response evaluation by restaging TUR was possible in 119 patients, and 102 of those patients (85.7%) achieved a CR. After a median follow-up of 66 months (range, 6-182 months), no local or distant disease recurrences were observed in 67 of 102 complete responders (65.7%), 17 of 102 complete responders (16.7%) experienced superficial local disease recurrence, and 18 of 102 complete responders (17.6%) had a muscle-invasive relapse. The 5-year tumor-specific, overall, and bladder-intact survival rates were 73.5%, 67.7%, and 51.2%, respectively. Treatment modality, tumor classification, and resection status after initial TUR had an impact on survival rates (P = .04, P = .02, and P = .02, respectively).
The current results indicated that conservative combined treatment is a reasonable alternative to radical cystectomy in selected patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
Lactoferrin (LTF) is a multi-functional protein belonging to the whey protein fractions of milk. The gene LTF encoding for such protein is considered a potential candidate for body measurement, milk ...composition and yield. This study reports on the genetic variability at the LTF locus in the Italian Mediterranean river buffalo and its possible association with milk yield. Eleven polymorphic sites were found in the DNA fragment spanning exons 15–16. In particular, intron 15 was extremely polymorphic with nine single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) detected, whereas the remaining two SNPs were exonic mutations (g.88G > A at exon 15 and g.1351G > A at exon 16) and both synonymous. The genotyping of the informative samples evidenced three haplotypes, whose frequencies were 0.6, 0.3 and 0.1, respectively, whereas the analysis of the exonic SNPs showed a perfect condition of linkage disequilibrium (g.88A/g.1351G and g.88G/g.1351A). The association study carried out by using the SNP g.88G > A showed that buffalo LTF gene has no statistically significant influence on daily milk yield. This study adds knowledge to the genetic variability of a species less investigated than the other ruminant species. These findings may serve as a useful tool for large-scale screening of buffalo populations.
We deal with directed hypergraphs as a tool to model and solve some classes of problems arising in operations research and in computer science. Concepts such as connectivity, paths and cuts are ...defined. An extension of the main duality results to a special class of hypergraphs is presented. Algorithms to perform visits of hypergraphs and to find optimal paths are studied in detail. Some applications arising in propositional logic, And-Or graphs, relational databases and transportation analysis are presented.
To evaluate the activity and toxicity of the combination of cisplatin (80 mg/m2 day 1) and vinorelbine (25 mg/m2 days 1 and 8) in patients with carcinoma of the uterine cervix that has not been ...previously treated with chemotherapy.
Fifty patients with cervical cancer were enrolled onto this study (27 stage IB-III, 23 stage IVB-recurrent). A two-stage optimal Simon design was applied. Thirteen responders of 29 treated patients were required to proceed beyond the first stage, and 28 responders were needed overall.
Hematologic toxicity was mild, with neutropenia being the most frequent side effect. Nonhematologic toxicity was frequent but never severe; one patient had grade 3 peripheral neurotoxicity. Objective responses were recorded for 32 patients (64%): 11 patients (22%) achieved a complete response (CR) and 21 patients (42%) achieved a partial response (PR). The response rate was 81.5% in patients with IB-III stage (25.9% CR rate) and 43.5% in patients with IVB-recurrent disease (17.4% CR rate). Responses were seen both in stage IVB patients (one CR and two PRs, for an overall rate of 37.5%) and in patients with recurrent disease (three CRs + four PRs, for an overall rate of 46.7%).
The combination of cisplatin and vinorelbine is an active regimen in the treatment of patients with early-stage and advanced carcinoma of the uterine cervix. The hematologic and nonhematologic toxicity of this combination is mild.
