Shiga-toxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) are important human pathogens associated with diarrhea and in some cases haemorrhagic colitis. Contaminated food derived from cattle and wildlife species are ...often associated with disease outbreaks. In this study, we report the prevalence, serogroup diversity and virulence profiles of STEC strains derived from cattle, rusa deer and pig. Of the 422 samples analyzed, STEC were detected in 40% (80/200) of cattle, 27.0% (33/122) of deer and 13.0% (13/100) of pigs. STEC isolates belonged to 38 O-serogroups whereby 5.2% (24/462) of the isolates belonged to clinically important EHEC-7 serogroups: O26 (n = 2), O103 (n = 1), O145 (n = 3) and O157 (n = 18). Fourteen serogroups (O26, O51, O84, O91, O100, O104, O110, O117, O145, O146, O156, O157, O177 and ONT) displayed multiple virulence profiles. We also identified two serovars (O117 and O119) in deer which are not well-documented in epidemiological surveys. 73.7% (28/38) of recovered O-serogroups are known to be associated with serious human illnesses including haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and bloody diarrhea. STEC isolates harboring single genotypes stx1, stx2, eae and hlyA accounted for 3.0% (14/462), 9.1% (42/462), 47.6% (220/462) and 1.7% (8/462) of all STEC isolates screened, respectively. Virulence combinations stx1 and stx2 were harboured by 1.3% of isolates while strains with genetic profiles eae/hlyA were the second most prevalent amongst STEC isolates. The full known virulent genotypes (stx2/eae, stx1/stx2/eae, stx1/stx2/hlyA and stx2/eae/hlyA) were present in 22 of the 462 STEC strains. A total of 10 different virulence patterns were recovered amongst animal species. Phylogeny of the gnd gene showed that amongst STEC strains, serovar O100 outlined the main cluster. Fourteen (n = 14) different sequence types (STs) were identified from a panel of twenty (n = 20) STEC isolates. One of the isolate (PG007B) possessed a unique ST (adk 10, fumC 693, gyrB 4, icd 1, mdh 8, purA 8, recA 2) that could not be assigned using MLST databases. None of the ST's recovered in deer were observed in domestic species. Our findings shows that food associated animals found on the tropical island of Mauritius carry a diversity of STEC strains with many serovars known to be associated with human disease. This report indicates that increased awareness, surveillance and hygienic attention at critical stages of the human food chain are warranted.

Campylobacter spp., Salmonella enterica, and Escherichia coli O157:H7 isolated from 898 faecal, 43 sewage, and 342 surface water samples from the Oldman River were characterized using bacterial ...subtyping methods in order to investigate potential sources of contamination of the watershed. Among these pathogens, Campylobacter spp. were the most frequently isolated from faecal, sewage, and surface water samples (266/895, 11/43, and 91/342, respectively), followed by Salmonella (67/898, 8/43, and 29/342, respectively), and E. coli O157:H7 (16/898, 2/43, and 8/342, respectively). Salmonella Rubislaw was the most common serovar isolated from water. This serovar was also isolated from two wild bird species. Most other serovars isolated from water were either not isolated from animals or were isolated from multiple species. E. coli O157:H7 was predominantly isolated from cattle. The most common phage-types of this pathogen from cattle were also the most common among water isolates, and there were exact pulsed field gel electrophoresis and comparative genomic fingerprint matches between cattle, sewage, and water isolates. Campylobacters were commonly isolated from surface waters and faeces from most animal species. Restriction fragment length polymorphism of the Campylobacter flaA gene identified several location and host species-specific (cattle, goose, pig) fingerprints. Molecular subtyping of these bacterial pathogens shows considerable promise as a tool for determining the sources of faecal pollution of water.

). Meanwhile, the linear chains are more amenable to oxidative doping, leading to Robin-Day class II/III mixed-valency and an increase in electrical conductivity by nearly three orders of magnitude. While previous studies have focused on the effects of changing metal and ligand identity, this work highlights how altering the metal-ligand connectivity can be a similarly powerful tool for tuning materials properties.
Here we show how a simple change in the geometry of 1D iron-tetraoxolene chains dramatically alters the observed physical properties, including the presence of valence tautomerism, strong magnetic coupling, and electrical conductivity.

Included are ...details on marking, housing, trapping, and collecting mammals. These guidelines cover current professional techniques and regulations involving mammals used in research. Institutional animal care and use committees, regulatory agencies, and investigators should review and approve procedures concerning use of vertebrates at any particular institution. These guidelines were prepared and approved by the ASM, whose collective expertise provides a broad and comprehensive understanding of the biology of nondomesticated mammals in their natural environments.

Over 35 years of US and Canadian pollution prevention and control efforts have led to substantial improvements in environmental quality of the Detroit River and western Lake Erie. However, the ...available information also shows that much remains to be done. Improvements in environmental quality have resulted in significant ecological recovery, including increasing populations of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), peregrine falcons (Falco columbarius), lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens), lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), walleye (Sander vitreus), and burrowing mayflies (Hexagenia spp.). Although this recovery is remarkable, many challenges remain, including population growth, transportation expansion, and land use changes; nonpoint source pollution; toxic substances contamination; habitat loss and degradation; introduction of exotic species; and greenhouse gases and global warming. Research/monitoring must be sustained for effective management. Priority research and monitoring needs include: demonstrating and quantifying cause-effect relationships; establishing quantitative endpoints and desired future states; determining cumulative impacts and how indicators relate; improving modeling and prediction; prioritizing geographic areas for protection and restoration; and fostering long-term monitoring for adaptive management. Key management agencies, universities, and environmental and conservation organizations should pool resources and undertake comprehensive and integrative assessments of the health of the Detroit River and western Lake Erie at least every 5 years to practice adaptive management for long-term sustainability.
The South Pole Telescope third-generation (SPT-3G) receiver was installed during the austral summer of 2016–2017. It is designed to measure the cosmic microwave background across three frequency ...bands centered at 95, 150, and 220 GHz. The SPT-3G receiver has ten focal plane modules, each with 269 pixels. The Oldman River watershed in southern Alberta, Canada, is an extensively irrigated region in which intensive agricultural practices have flourished. Concern over water quality in the basin has been ...expressed because of high levels of enteric disease indigenous to the region. To address these concerns, we conducted a 2-year study to estimate the prevalence of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella spp. in surface water within the basin. This study is the first of its kind to identify E. coli O157:H7 repeatedly in surface water collected from a Canadian watershed. Prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella spp. in water samples was 0.9% (n = 1483) and 6.2% (n = 1429), respectively. While data examined at a regional level show a relationship between high livestock density and high pathogen levels in southern Alberta, statistical analysis of point source data indicates that predicted manure output from bovine, swine, and poultry feeding operations was not directly associated with either Salmonella spp. or E. coli O157:H7 prevalence. However, geography and weather variables, which are likely to influence bacterial runoff, were not considered in this model. We also postulate that variations in time, amount, and frequency of manure application onto agricultural lands may have influenced levels of surface-water contamination with these bacterial pathogens.Key words: water, Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, manure output, agriculture.

We have developed superconducting Ti transition-edge sensors with Au protection layers on the top and bottom for the South Pole Telescope’s third-generation receiver (a cosmic microwave background ...polarimeter, due to be upgraded this austral summer of 2017/2018). The base Au layer (deposited on a thin Ti glue layer) isolates the Ti from any substrate effects; the top Au layer protects the Ti from oxidation during processing and subsequent use of the sensors. We control the transition temperature and normal resistance of the sensors by varying the sensor width and the relative thicknesses of the Ti and Au layers. The transition temperature is roughly six times more sensitive to the thickness of the base Au layer than to that of the top Au layer. The normal resistance is inversely proportional to sensor width for any given film configuration. For widths greater than five micrometers, the critical temperature is independent of width.
