Cornea is the outmost structure of the eye and exposed directly to the air pollution. However, little is known about the effect of PM2.5 on corneal epithelium, which is critical for maintenance of ...cornea homeostasis and visual function.
We investigated the influence of PM2.5 exposure on corneal epithelial migration and the possible mechanisms involved in the process.
We observed wound healing in mouse model of cornea abrasion, evaluated the migration and mobility of cultured corneal epithelial cells with wound scratch assay and Transwell migration assay, detected the phosphorylation and interaction of FAK/paxillin with immunofluorescence and immunoprecipitation, and determined the RhoA activity and actin reorganization, in response to PM2.5 exposure.
Exposure to PM2.5 remarkably inhibited corneal epithelial cell migration both in mouse model of corneal abrasion and in cell culture model. We found the phosphorylation and interaction of FAK/paxillin, RhoA activity as well as actin reorganization were suppressed by PM2.5 exposure. Moreover, formation of ROS might play a role in the action of PM2.5.
PM2.5 exposure could result in delay of corneal epithelium wound healing by inhibiting cell migration, thus more attention should be paid to the potential risk of corneal infection and effort should be made to protect eyes against impairment induced by PM2.5.

The PPAR-γ functionalized magnetic nano-microspheres have been successfully synthesized and characterized by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The specificity, reusability, and reproducibility of the nano-microspheres were investigated with the help of the specific binding of rosiglitazone to PPAR-γ. In addition, the incubation temperature and the pH of the buffer solution in the magnetic ligand fishing were optimized to improve the specific adsorption efficiency of the analytes. Wucai suffers from low temperature during the growth period, resulting in a decline in yield and poor quality. But the molecular mechanisms of cold tolerance in wucai are still unclear.
According to ...the phenotypes and physiological indexes, we screened out the cold-tolerant genotype "W18" (named CT) and cold-sensitive genotype "Sw-1" (named CS) in six wucai genotypes. We performed transcriptomic analysis using seedling leaves after 24 h of cold treatment. A total of 3536 and 3887 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between the low temperature (LT) and control (NT) comparative transcriptome in CT and CS, respectively, with 1690 DEGs specific to CT. The gene ontology (GO) analysis showed that the response to cadmium ion (GO:0,046,686), response to jasmonic acid (GO:0,009,753), and response to wounding (GO:0,009,611) were enriched in CT (LT vs NT). The DEGs were enriched in starch and sucrose metabolism and glutathione metabolism in both groups, and α-linolenic acid metabolism was enriched only in CT (LT vs NT). DEGs in these processes, including glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), 13S lipoxygenase (LOX), and jasmonate ZIM-domain (JAZ), as well as transcription factors (TFs), such as the ethylene-responsive transcription factor 53 (ERF53), basic helix-loop-helix 92 (bHLH92), WRKY53, and WRKY54.We hypothesize that these genes play important roles in the response to cold stress in this species.
Our data for wucai is consistent with previous studies that suggest starch and sucrose metabolism increased the content of osmotic substances, and the glutathione metabolism pathway enhance the active oxygen scavenging. These two pathways may participated in response to cold stress. In addition, the activation of α-linolenic acid metabolism may promote the synthesis of methyl jasmonate (MeJA), which might also play a role in the cold tolerance of wucai.

Luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs) that can effectively differentiate cis/trans isomers are rarely reported. Herein, we report a novel non-interpenetrated pillared-layered LMOF ...Zn(HIPA)(BPyTPE) (1) (BPyTPE = (E)-1,2-diphenyl-1,2-bis(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)ethene; HIPA = (5-hydroxyisophthalic acid)) with a high fluorescence quantum yield of 90.1%. The activated 1 exhibits high thermal stability and strong fluorescence in a methanol suspension. The fluorescence of activated 1 can be much more efficiently quenched by trans-dimethyl-2-butenedioate and trans-2-butene-1,4-diol than cis-dimethyl-2-butenedioate and cis-2-butene-1,4-diol, which enables it to differentiate these cis/trans isomers. This interesting LMOF could be a new type of fluorescence sensor to effectively detect cis/trans isomers.
Red pottery clay (RPC) was modified using a silane coupling agent, and the modified RPC (mRPC) was then used to enhance the performance of high-density polyethylene-based wood-plastic composites. The ...effect of the mRPC content on the performances of the composites was investigated through Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, differential mechanical analysis (DMA) and ultraviolet (UV)-accelerated aging tests. After adding the mRPC, a moisture adsorption hysteresis was observed. The DMA results indicated that the mRPC effectively enhanced the rigidity and elasticity of the composites. The mRPC affected the thermal gravimetric, leading to a reduction of the thermal degradation rate and a right-shift of the thermal degradation peak; the initial thermal degradation temperature was increased. After 3000 h of UV-accelerated aging, the flexural strength and impact strength both declined. For aging time between 0 and 1000 h, the increase in amplitude of Δ
(luminescence) and Δ
(color) reached a maximum; the surface fading did not became obvious. Δ
and Δ
increased more significantly between 1000 and 2000 h. These characterization results indicate that the chromophores of the mRPC became briefly active. However, when the aging times were higher than 2000 h, the photo-degradation reaction was effectively prevented by adding the mRPC. The best overall enhancement was observed for an mRPC mass percentage of 5%, with a storage modulus of 3264 MPa and an increase in loss modulus by 16.8%, the best anti-aging performance and the lowest degree of color fading.
Three-dimensional type-II Weyl fermions possess overtilted cone-like low-energy band dispersion. Unlike the closed ellipsoidal Fermi surface for type-I Weyl fermions, the Fermi surface is an open ...hyperboloid for type-II Weyl fermions. We evaluate the spin and density susceptibility of type-II Weyl fermions with repulsive S-wave interaction by means of Green’s functions. We obtain the particle–hole continuum along the tilted momentum direction and perpendicular to the tilted momentum direction respectively. We find the zero sound mode in some repulsive interaction strengths by numerically solving the pole equations of the susceptibility within the random-phase approximation.
Arsenicals have been widely used in the treatment of cancers such as leukemia and other tumors. However, their side effects limit their clinical application. Stiripentol, a second-line adjunctive ...treatment for epilepsy with a good safety profile, inhibits microsomal cytochrome-P450-family enzymes to extend the retention time of co-administration. Inspired by the metabolism of stiripentol, the 1,3-benzodioxole responsible for the inhibition and its metabolic derivatives were conjugated with arsenical precursors. The fabricated arsenicals were eliminated much slower in mice and maintained an efficient concentration in the blood for a longer time than that of the arsenical precursors. They also performed better in anti-proliferation by inhibiting the thioredoxin system to induce oxidative stress, and concomitantly to initiate apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. The fabricated arsenicals reversed the hemogram of tumor-bearing mice to normal and eliminated the tumor without causing damage to any organs, exhibiting a good design strategy and pre-clinical application for leukemia and other tumors.
Scanning MEMS mirrors can extend confocal laser microscopy into endoscopic applications, but the practical use of MEMS mirror-based confocal endomicroscopy is hindered partially by various image ...distortions such as barrel, fan-shaped and nonlinear distortions. In this work, the nonlinear scanning behaviors of an electrothermal MEMS mirror are analyzed and incorporated into an optical scanning model that takes all these three types of distortions into account. The model generates a 2D spatial mapping that can be applied to correct all of the image distortions in one step without a calibration board. To experimentally validate this method, a confocal laser endomicroscope employing a two-axis scanning electrothermal MEMS micromirror is designed and constructed, and confocal fluorescence images of a patterned micro-structure are obtained with the endomicroscope. The results show that the overall image distortion is reduced by at least one order of magnitude in the length direction.
We experimentally demonstrate comprehensive reveal of the ultrafast plasmonic field distribution in a bowtie nanostructure by two-color photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). We attribute the ...comprehensive reveal of the field distribution to an effective opening of the two-color quantum channel in multiphoton photoemission, which leads to a dramatic reduction of the nonlinear order (from 4.07 down to 2.01) of the plasmon-assisted photoelectrons and a huge increment of the photoemission yields (typically 20-fold enhancement). Furthermore, we have found that opening extent of the quantum channel strongly related with the photoemission yields generated from one-color 400 and 800 nm laser pulse illumination, and the optimized ratio between the yields for effective opening of two-color quantum channel in our experiment is also achieved. Additionally, benefiting from the high spatial resolution of PEEM, we found there exists a large difference in the nonlinear order of two-color photoemission under the plasmonic excitation within a nanostructure, which has not been reported yet. This work introduces multicolor quantum channel photoemission into the PEEM imaging and offers new way to flexibly control the nonlinear order of the plasmon-assisted photoemission, and it will enable PEEM as a versatile tool in many potential applications.
