, FeNPs) were obtained by oxide-reduction-precipitation and reduction reactions, respectively, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Modified membranes (PA+0.25Cu-PSL and PA+0.25Fe-PSL) were obtained by incorporating these nanoparticles during the interfacial polymerization process (PI). These membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements. , and anti-adhesion properties were confirmed by fluorescence microscopy estimating the percentage of live/dead cells. The permeate flow and rejection of salts was evaluated using a crossflow cell. An increase of the membrane's roughness on the modified membrane was observed, influencing the desalination performance more strongly in the presence of the FeNPs with respect to the CuNPs. Moreover, a significant bactericidal and anti-adhesion effect was obtained in presence of both modifications with respect to the pristine membrane. An important decrease in CFU in the presence of modified membranes of around 98% in both modifications was observed. However, the anti-adhesion percentage and reduction of live/dead cells were higher in the presence of the copper-modified membrane in comparison to the iron-modified membrane. These facts were attributed to the differences in antimicrobial action mechanism of these types of nanoparticles. In conclusion, TFC-RO membranes modified by the incorporation of CuNPs during PI represent one alternative material to attend to the biofouling impact in the desalination process.
NMSC (non-melanoma skin cancer) is a common tumor in the Caucasian population, accounting for 90% of skin cancers. Among them, squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) can metastasize and, due to its high ...incidence, constitute a severe health problem. It has been suggested that cutaneous SCCs with more risk to metastasize express high levels of nuclear IKKα. However, the molecular mechanisms that lead to this enhanced aggressiveness are largely unknown. To understand in depth the influence of nuclear IKKα in skin SCC progression, we have generated murine PDVC57 skin carcinoma cells expressing exogenous IKKα either in the nucleus or in the cytoplasm to further distinguish the tumor properties of IKKα in both localizations. Our results show that IKKα promotes changes in both subcellular compartments, resembling EMT (epithelial-mesenchymal transition), which are more pronounced when IKKα is in the nucleus of these tumor cells. These EMT-related changes include a shift toward a migratory phenotype and induction of the expression of proteins involved in cell matrix degradation, cell survival and resistance to apoptosis. Additionally, we have found that apigenin, a flavonoid with anti-cancer properties, inhibits the expression of IKKα and attenuates most of the pro-tumoral EMT changes induced by IKKα in mouse tumor keratinocytes. Nevertheless, we have found that apigenin only inhibits the expression of the IKKα protein when it is localized in the cytoplasm.
An increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) has been reported. Whether COVID-19 increases the risk of VTE in non-ICU ...wards remains unknown. We aimed to evaluate the burden of asymptomatic deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in COVID-19 patients with elevated D-dimer levels.
In this prospective study consecutive patients hospitalized in non-intensive care units with diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia and D-dimer > 1000 ng/ml were screened for asymptomatic DVT with complete compression doppler ultrasound (CCUS). The study was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee.
The study comprised 156 patients (65.4% male). All but three patients received standard doses of thromboprophylaxis. Median days of hospitalization until CCUS was 9 (IQR 5–17). CCUS was positive for DVT in 23 patients (14.7%), of whom only one was proximal DVT. Seven patients (4.5%) had bilateral distal DVT. Patients with DVT had higher median D-dimer levels: 4527 (IQR 1925-9144) ng/ml vs 2050 (IQR 1428-3235) ng/ml; p < 0.001. D-dimer levels > 1570 ng/ml were associated with asymptomatic DVT (OR 9.1; CI 95% 1.1–70.1). D-dimer showed an acceptable discriminative capacity (area under the ROC curve 0.72, 95% CI 0.61–0.84).
In patients admitted with COVID-19 pneumonia and elevated D-dimer levels, the incidence of asymptomatic DVT is similar to that described in other series. Higher cut-off levels for D-dimer might be necessary for the diagnosis of DVT in COVID-19 patients.

Chromaffin cells from the adrenal gland (CCs) have extensively been used to explore the molecular structure and function of the exocytotic machinery, neurotransmitter release and synaptic ...transmission. The CC is integrated in the sympathoadrenal axis that helps the body maintain homoeostasis during both routine life and in acute stress conditions. This function is exquisitely controlled by the cerebral cortex and the hypothalamus. We propose the hypothesis that damage undergone by the brain during neurodegenerative diseases is also affecting the neurosecretory function of adrenal medullary CCs. In this context, we review here the following themes: (i) How the discharge of catecholamines is centrally and peripherally regulated at the sympathoadrenal axis; (ii) which are the intricacies of the amperometric techniques used to study the quantal release of single‐vesicle exocytotic events; (iii) which are the alterations of the exocytotic fusion pore so far reported, in CCs of mouse models of neurodegenerative diseases; (iv) how some proteins linked to neurodegenerative pathologies affect the kinetics of exocytotic events; (v) finally, we try to integrate available data into a hypothesis to explain how the centrally originated neurodegenerative diseases may alter the kinetics of single‐vesicle exocytotic events in peripheral adrenal medullary CCs.
Importance
COVID‐19 is caused by SARS‐CoV‐2, a betacoronavirus that uses the angiotensin‐converting enzyme‐related carboxypeptidase (ACE2) receptor to gain entry into cells. ACE2 receptor is widely ...expressed in multiple organs, including the retina, an extension of the central nervous system. The ACE2 receptor is involved in the diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy. Additionally, coronaviruses cause ocular infections in animals, including retinitis, and optic neuritis.
Objective
To assess whether there is any retinal disease associated with COVID‐19.
Design
We have evaluated 27 asymptomatic subjects, with retinal fundoscopic, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography fourteen days after hospital discharge due to COVID‐19 bilateral pneumonia.
Results
Cotton wool exudates were evident in six out of 27 patients evaluated, a 22%. Cotton wool exudates are a marker vascular disease severity in other medical context, that is diabetes and hypertension, and are associated with increased risk for acute vascular events. Whether antiaggregation therapy may play a role on fundoscopic‐selected patients with COVID‐19 requires prospective trials.
CeO2 and Ce-Zr mixed oxides with different Ce:Zr ratios were prepared; characterised by Raman spectroscopy, XRD, TEM, N2 adsorption at -196 degrees C, and H2-TPR; and tested for soot oxidation under ...NOx/O2. Among the different mixed oxides, Ce0.76Zr0.24O2 provided the best results. Ce0.76Zr0.24O2 presented greater activity than pure CeO2 for soot oxidation by NOx/O2 when both catalysts were calcined at 500 degrees C (soot oxidation rates at 500 degrees C are 14.9 and 11.4 mcg soot/s, respectively), and the catalytic activity of CeO2 decayed significantly with calcination temperature (from 500 to 1000 degrees C), whereas Ce0.76Zr0.24O2 presented enhanced thermal stability at temperatures as high as 1000 degrees C. In addition, Ce0.76Zr0.24O2 catalysed the reduction of NOx by soot at around 500 degrees C more efficiently than CeO2, thereby contributing to the decreased NOx emission level. The catalytic activity of CeO2 and Ce0.76Zr0.24O2 for soot oxidation by NOx/O2 depended on the textural properties (BET area; crystallite size), but other properties of the oxides, such as redox behaviour and/or enhanced lattice oxygen mobility, also played a significant role. Rationale
Chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) has been proposed as a model of depression. However, most CSDS studies rely only on the analysis of stress-induced social avoidance. Moreover, the ...predictive validity of the model has been poorly analyzed, let alone its interaction with biological risk factors.
Objectives
Here, we explore the validity of CSDS as a depression model. Further, the effect of decreased vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (VGLUT1), as a potential factor enhancing a depressive-like phenotype, was studied.
Methods
Mice were exposed to CSDS (10 days) followed by saline, venlafaxine, fluoxetine, or tianeptine treatment (30 days). The battery of behaviors included motor activity, memory, anxiety, social interaction, helplessness, and anhedonic-like behavior. Moreover, the behavioral effect of CSDS in VGLUT1 heterozygous (VGLUT1+/−) mice was studied, as well as the regulation of VGLUT1 mRNA.
Results
CSDS induced anhedonia, helplessness, hyperactivity, anxiety, social avoidance, and freezing, as well as downregulation of VGLUT1 mRNA in the amygdala. Repeated venlafaxine showed antidepressant-like activity and both venlafaxine and tianeptine behaved as effective anxiolytics. CSDS-induced social avoidance was reverted by tianeptine. Fluoxetine failed to revert most of the behavioral alterations. VGLUT1+/− mice showed an enhanced vulnerability to stress-induced social avoidance.
Conclusion
We suggest that CSDS is not a pure model of depression. Indeed, it addresses relevant aspects of anxiety-related disorders. Firstly, CSDS-induced anhedonia and social avoidance are not associated in this model. Moreover, CSDS might be affecting brain areas mainly involved in the processing of social behavior, such as the amygdala, where the glutamatergic mechanism could play a key role.
Abstract Major depression is a mental disorder often preceded by exposure to chronic stress or stressful life events. Recently, animal models based on social conflict such as chronic social defeat ...stress (CSDS) are proposed to be more relevant to stress-induced human psychopathology compared to environmental models like the chronic mild stress (CMS). However, while CMS reproduces specifically core depressive symptoms such as anhedonia and helplessness, CSDS studies rely on the analysis of stress-induced social avoidance, addressing different neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we study comparatively the two models from a behavioural and neurochemical approach and their possible relevance to human depression. Mice (C57BL/6) were exposed to CMS or CSDS for six weeks and ten days. Anhedonia was periodically evaluated. A battery of test applied during the fourth week after the stress procedure included motor activity, memory, anxiety, social interaction and helplessness. Subsequently, we examined glutamate, GABA, 5-HT and dopamine levels in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus and brainstem. CMS induced a clear depressive-like profile including anhedonia, helplessness and memory impairment. CSDS induced anhedonia, hyperactivity, anxiety and social avoidance, signs also common to anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorders. While both models disrupted the excitatory inhibitory balance in the prefrontal cortex, CMS altered importantly this balance in the brainstem. Moreover, CSDS decreased dopamine in the prefrontal cortex and brainstem. We suggests that while depressive-like behaviours might be associated to altered aminoacid neurotransmission in cortical and brain stem areas, CSDS induced anxiety behaviours might be linked to specific alteration of dopaminergic pathways involved in rewarding processes.

The relationship between endocrine system disorders and health risks due to chemical environmental compounds has become a growing concern in recent years. Involuntary exposure to endocrine disruptors (EDCs) is associated with the worldwide increase of diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, and neurocortical disorders. EDCs are compounds that target the nuclear hormonereceptors (NHR) leading to epigenetic changes. Consequently, the use of biosensing strategies based on epigenetic events have a great potential to provide outstanding information about the exposition of EDCs and their evaluation in human health. This review addresses the novel trends in biosensing EDCs evaluation based on DNA methylation assays associated with different human diseases.
