Plum pox virus (PPV) causes the serious sharka disease in Prunus trees. Peach P. persica (L.) Batsch trees are severely affected by PPV and no definitive source of genetic resistance has been ...identified. Previous results showed, however, that PPV-resistant 'Garrigues' almond P. dulcis (Mill.) D.A. Webb was able to transfer its resistance to 'GF305' peach through grafting, reducing symptomatology and viral load in PPV-infected plants. A recent study tried to identify genes responsible for this effect by studying mRNA expression through RNAseq in peach and almond plants, before and after grafting, and before and after PPV infection. In this work, we used the same peach and almond samples, but focused the high-throughput analyses on small RNAs (sRNAs) expression. We studied massive sequencing data and found an interesting pattern of sRNAs overexpression linked to antiviral defense genes that suggested activation of these genes followed by down regulation to basal levels. We also discovered that 'Garrigues' almond plants were infected by different plant viruses that were transferred to peach plants. The large amounts of viral sRNAs found in grafted peaches indicated a strong RNA silencing antiviral response and led us to postulate that these plant viruses could be collaborating in the observed 'Garrigues' effect.
Abstract Objective We sought to evaluate the psychometric properties of two widely used screening scales: the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) ...among pregnant Peruvian women. Methods This cross-sectional study included 1517 women receiving prenatal care from February 2012 to March 2013. A structured interview was used to collect data using PHQ-9 and EPDS. We examined reliability, construct and concurrent validity between two scales using internal consistency indices, factor structures, correlations, and Cohen׳s kappa. Results Both scales had good internal consistency (Cronbach׳s alpha>0.8). Correlation between PHQ-9 and EPDS scores was fair (rho=0.52). Based on exploratory factor analysis (EFA), both scales yielded a two-factor structure. EFA including all items from PHQ-9 and EPDS yielded four factors, namely, “somatization”, “depression and suicidal ideation”, “anxiety and depression”, and “anhedonia”. The agreement between the two scales was generally fair at different cutoff scores with the highest Cohen׳s kappa being 0.46. Conclusions Both the PHQ-9 and EPDS are reliable and valid scales for antepartum depression assessment. The PHQ-9 captures somatic symptoms, while EPDS detects depressive symptoms comorbid with anxiety during early pregnancy. Our findings suggest simultaneous administration of both scales may improve identification of antepartum depressive disorders in clinical settings.

This work analyses the effect of accruals quality in the access of firms to bank debt in a panel data of SME Spanish firms. The results show a positive association between accruals quality and bank debt, even when controlling for other determinants of bank debt and for possible endogeneity between bank debt and accruals quality, which suggests that higher precision of earnings reduces information asymmetries with banks and favors the access of firms to bank loans.
We examined associations of childhood physical and sexual abuse with risk of intimate partner violence (IPV). We also evaluated the extent to which childhood abuse was associated with self-reported ...general health status and symptoms of antepartum depression in a cohort of pregnant Peruvian women.
In-person interviews were conducted to collect information regarding history of childhood abuse and IPV from 1,521 women during early pregnancy. Antepartum depressive symptomatology was evaluated using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Multivariable logistic regression procedures were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI).
Any childhood abuse was associated with 2.2-fold increased odds of lifetime IPV (95%CI: 1.72-2.83). Compared with women who reported no childhood abuse, those who reported both, childhood physical and sexual abuse had a 7.14-fold lifetime risk of physical and sexual IPV (95%CI: 4.15-12.26). The odds of experiencing physical and sexual abuse by an intimate partner in the past year was 3.33-fold higher among women with a history of childhood physical and sexual abuse as compared to women who were not abused as children (95%CI 1.60-6.89). Childhood abuse was associated with higher odds of self-reported poor health status during early pregnancy (aOR = 1.32, 95%CI: 1.04-1.68) and with symptoms of antepartum depression (aOR = 2.07, 95%CI: 1.58-2.71).
These data indicate that childhood sexual and physical abuse is associated with IPV, poor general health and depressive symptoms in early pregnancy. The high prevalence of childhood trauma and its enduring effects of on women's health warrant concerted global health efforts in preventing violence.

The performance of a whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) for producing physically and chemically stable omega-3 emulsions was compared to hydrolysates obtained from other sustainable protein sources such as soy (SPH) and blue whiting (BPH). The oxidative stability of hydrolysate-stabilized emulsions was greatly influenced by their physical stability. Emulsion stabilized with BPH suffered a constant increase in droplet size and BPH was not able to prevent omega-3 oxidation, showing high concentration of volatiles. The peroxide value of SPH emulsion increased after the first day of storage, but it had a lower concentration of volatiles. In contrast, WPH-stabilized emulsion, which did not had any change in droplet size during storage, showed the highest oxidative stability. Therefore, our results confirmed that WPH is an interesting option for physical and oxidative stabilization of omega-3 emulsions, while SPH could be used in emulsions with shorter storage time such as pre-emulsions for microencapsulation of omega-3 oils.

In this study, we used a combination of quantitative proteomics and bioinformatic prediction for identifying novel antioxidant peptides. Thirty-five peptides from potato, seaweed, microbial, and spinach proteins were investigated. Based on high DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50 ≤ 16 mg/mL), metal chelation activity, isoelectric point, and high relative abundance in the parent protein sources, 11 peptides were selected. Lipid oxidation retardation was evaluated in 5% fish oil-in-water emulsions stabilized with Tween 20, where emulsion physical stability was unaffected by peptide addition. The secondary structure of selected peptides was similar in the aqueous solution and emulsions, as confirmed by synchrotron radiation circular dichroism spectroscopy. The emulsions containing the selected peptides had lower levels of hydroperoxides and volatile compounds during storage compared to the control (without peptide). This study contributes to elucidating the effect of antioxidant peptides in emulsions and demonstrates the ability of quantitative proteomics and bioinformatics prediction to identify peptides with strong antioxidant properties.

Physical and oxidative stability of 5% (by weight) cod liver oil-in-water emulsions fortified with common carp (C. carpio) roe protein hydrolysate (CRPH) were examined. CRPH was obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis of discarded roe by using Alcalase 2.4L for 30, 60, 90, and 120min to yield different degrees of hydrolysis (DH). All the hydrolysates showed in vitro antioxidant activity in terms of radical scavenging and chelating properties. CRPH-containing emulsions had significantly smaller droplets than control (p<0.05). Besides, CRPH rendered rheological stability to the emulsions. It also prevented the loss of tocopherol and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). CRPH retarded primary and secondary oxidation in emulsions as evidenced by peroxide values (PVs) and secondary volatile oxidation products, respectively. All the mentioned effects were compared among CRPHs with varying DH (7.6–10.2%). However, CRPH-containing emulsions had high levels of 2-methyl-1-butanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, and 2-butanone after storage.
This study analyses start-up firms' investment in trade credit during the period 2011-2014. We find that new or recently created firms had greater investments in trade credit than established firms. ...Moreover, the results indicate that start-up firms' investment in trade credit did not depend on their bargaining power or access to external finance. These findings suggest that the reason start-ups invested more in accounts receivable than established firms could be due to late payments or their granting credit to low-quality customers who cannot obtain credit from established firms.
