The objectives of this study were to compare estimates of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) as CH4 (enteric-manure), N2O (manure), and CO2 (fuel and energy use), the use of water and soil, the excretion ...of nutrients in manure, and feed efficiency from Mexican intensive dairy farms. Data from 26 dairy farms were analysed with a multivariable cluster analysis. Three grades of intensifications were identified (low, medium and high). Mathematical models were used to estimate GHG. Feed efficiency (kg milk per kg DMI) was better in high intensive production systems. Enteric methane was identified as the major source of GHG in all types of systems. High intensive dairies generated the lowest emissions of CH4, N2O and CO2 equivalent by unit of product, 18.6 g, 0.12 g and 828 g, respectively. Water footprint was lower in low intensive dairies using 427 L of water/L of milk. Cropland was highest in intensive systems but milk yield per area was better (30,938 kg/ha). Excretions of N, P, and K were lower in intensive dairies per kg of milk, at 13.2, 2.4, and 6.4 g, respectively. As intensification in the dairy system increased feed efficiency (kg milk/kg DMI) was better. Per unit of product (kg of milk), dairies with the highest intensification generated the lowest GHG emissions, nutrient excretion values and land and water use as compared to dairies with medium and low intensification. Increasing intensification and therefore feed efficiency of Mexican dairy systems could help to decrease GHG emissions, natural resources use and nutrient excretion.

► Determination of the electrical energy produced by two axes systems. ► Method based on a combination of diffuse models and daily–hourly relations. ► Economical analysis extended to 52 main cities ...in Spain. ► Analysis incorporating different losses and electrical behavior of the system. ► Two axes devices highly profitable for most of the Spanish national territory.
The present work shows an alterative method for determining the tracking energy advantage, defined as the additional electrical energy produced by two axes tracking systems respect to fixed devices, in order to analyze the economical profitability in Spain. For this purpose, 52 main cities of this country have been analyzed. The proposed methodology starts from irradiation data, combining diffuse models and daily–hourly relations. Different types of losses have been evaluated, and the electrical behavior of the systems has been incorporated. Final annual energetic results demonstrate that two axes devices show a relevant energy advantage (higher than 20%) for most of the national territory.
The present study tests the hypothesis that higher consumption of bakery products, sweetened soft drinks and yogurt is associated with higher intake of energy, saturated fats, sugars and worse ...overall diet quality among Spanish children. This is a cross-sectional study covering 1112 children aged 6.0–7.0 years in four Spanish cities. Nutrient and food intake were obtained through a food-frequency questionnaire, and overall diet quality calculated using the healthy-eating index (HEI) developed by Kennedy et al. (1995) . Standardized methods were used to measure anthropometric variables. Associations of interest were summarized as the difference in nutrient and food consumption between the value of the fifth and the first quintile of consumption (dq) of bakery products, sweetened soft drinks or yogurt, adjusted for energy intake and BMI. Bakery products, sweetened soft drinks and yogurt supplied 15·5, 1·0 and 5·6 % energy intake respectively. Higher consumption of these three foods was associated with greater energy intake (P<0·001), but not with higher BMI. Consumption of bakery products was associated with the proportion of energy derived from intake of total carbohydrates (dq 4·5 %, P<0·001) and sugars (dq 2 %, P<0·001), but did not show association with the HEI. Consumption of sweetened soft drinks was associated with a lower consumption of milk (dq −88 ml, P<0·001) and Ca (dq −175 m/, P<0·001), and worse HEI (dq −2, P<0·01). Consumption of yogurt, while associated with higher energy intake from saturated fats (dq 1·77 %, P<0·001) and sugars (dq 2·02 %, P<0·001), showed no association with the HEI. Differences in the intake of nutrients and foods across quintiles of consumption of bakery products, sweetened soft drinks and yogurt were usually very small. We conclude that the impact of the consumption of bakery products, sweetened soft drinks and yogurt on the quality of the diet of Spanish children is only modest, although it may contribute to aggravating certain unhealthy characteristics of their diet, particularly excess energy, saturated fats and sugars. Therefore, consumption of bakery products and sweetened soft drinks should be moderated, and priority given to consumption of low-fat, low-sugar yogurt.
A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography–electrospray mass spectrometry (RP-HPLC–ESI-MS (ion trap)) method is developed, for the first time, for profiling transgenic and non-transgenic ...maize with the aim of cultivar characterization. To optimize chromatographic conditions the following parameters were studied: column, gradient, and ion-pairing reagent. Moreover, the influence in the MS signal of the variation of the capillary voltage and the accumulated ions in the trap was also studied. The developed method was applied to the profiling of different protein fractions (albumin, globulin, prolamin, and glutelin) isolated from Bt transgenic and non-transgenic maize cultivars. Moreover, different maize samples, namely, maize cultivars from different geographical origins (USA, Canada, France, and Spain), transgenic maize samples with certified GMO content, and three transgenic Bt maize cultivars with their isogenic non-transgenic counterparts (Aristis Bt vs. Aristis, PR33P67 vs. PR33P66, and DKC6575 vs. Tietar) were profiled by the developed method. Mass spectra obtained for certain peaks in the maize cultivars studied resulted, in some occasions, useful for cultivar characterization and differentiation. The comparison of UV and MS profiles and mass spectra corresponding to the protein fractions with those of the whole seeds enabled the assignment of some peaks.
To know the pneumococcal vaccination coverage in patients≥65 years old, as well as the risk of pneumococcal disease according to whether or not they received such vaccination.
Cross-sectional study, ...followed by historical cohort.
Urban area.
By systematic sampling, 2,805 people≥65 years from the city of Albacete were selected.
Dependent variable: diagnosis of pneumococcal disease and date.
age, sex, chronic pathologies, medication, pneumococcal vaccination and date. The computerized medical records were reviewed, from 1-1-2009 to October-December 2015. A descriptive analysis was carried out, the relative risk of the onset of pneumococcal disease according to vaccination has been calculated, and survival analysis has been carried out, with the statistical program SPSS 17.0.
Median age 71 years; 57.2% were women; 46% received polysaccharide vaccine (95% CI 44.1-47.8). Only 10 people received conjugated vaccine. Twenty-two people were diagnosed with invasive pneumococcal disease and 153 non-invasive. The relative risk of pneumococcal disease in vaccinated versus unvaccinated, respectively for invasive and non-invasive, was 1.59 (95% CI 0.69-3.68) and 1.84 (95% CI 1.33-2.54). Cox regression showed a higher risk of non-invasive disease for COPD (1.95; 95% CI 1.32-2.89), smoking (1.87; 95% CI 1.28-2.73), corticoid-therapy (1.73; 95% CI 1.08-2.79), polysaccharide vaccination (141.41; 95% CI 5.92-3,378.49) and age (1.11; 95% CI 1.08-1.14), with interaction between these 2 (0.94, 95% CI 0.91-0.98).
There is an increased risk of pneumococcal disease in patients≥65 years vaccinated with polysaccharide, although with a protective effect in vaccinated older.
This study examined the association of obesity-related eating behaviors (OREB) with physical activity, sedentariness, and diet quality. Data were taken from a cross-sectional study in 10,791 persons ...representative of the Spanish population who were ≥18 y of age in 2008-2010. The following self-reported information was collected on 12 OREB: not planning how much to eat before sitting down, not deciding the amount of food on the plate, skipping breakfast, eating precooked/canned food or snacks bought at vending machines or at fast-food restaurants, not choosing low-energy foods, not removing visible fat from meat or skin from chicken, eating while watching television or seated on a sofa or an armchair, and taking a short time for meals. Analyses were performed with linear or logistic regression, as appropriate, and adjusted for the main confounders. In comparison to participants with ≤1 OREB, those with ≥5 OREB performed less physical activity β: -2.61 (95% CI: -4.44, -0.78); P-trend < 0.001 and spent more time watching television β: 2.17 (95% CI: 1.39, 2.95); P-trend < 0.001; furthermore, they had greater total energy intake β: 160 (95% CI: 115, 210); P-trend < 0.001 and were less likely to follow a Mediterranean diet OR: 0.55 (95% CI: 0.41, 0.73); P-trend < 0.001. In conclusion, the association between OREB and obesity is biologically plausible because OREB are associated with energy intake and poor accordance with the Mediterranean diet. Studies on the association between OREB and obesity should control for the confounding effect of physical activity and sedentariness.
