Few studies have examined whether activity and adiposity levels typical of American women affect their risk of ovulatory disorder infertility, and none has examined moderate and vigorous intensity ...exercise separately. We investigated these associations in the Nurses' Health Study II, comparing prospectively collected data on adiposity and activity for 830 cases of incident ovulatory infertility and 26,125 pregnancies. We observed a U-shaped association between body mass index (BMI) and relative risk of ovulatory infertility, with increased risk for BMI below 20.0 or above$24.0\ {\rm kg}/{\rm m}^{2}$. On the basis of the BMI distribution of U.S. women, these findings suggest that 12% (95% confidence interval = 7-20%) of ovulatory infertility in the U.S. may be attributable to underweight (BMI <20.0) and 25% (95% CI = 20-31%) to overweight (BMI ≥25.0). An increase in vigorous activity (but not moderate activity) was associated with reduced relative risk of ovulatory infertility. Each hour per week of vigorous activity was associated with a 7% (95% CI = 4-10%) lower relative risk of ovulatory infertility. After adjustment for BMI, a 5% (95% CI = 2-8%) reduction in relative risk per hour of weekly activity remained. These data suggest that, among American women, more ovulatory infertility is attributable to overweight and a sedentary lifestyle than to underweight and overexertion.
The 2013-2016 epidemic of Ebola virus disease (EVD) that originated in West Africa underscored many of the challenges to conducting clinical research during an ongoing infectious disease epidemic, ...both in the most affected countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, as well as in the United States and Europe, where a total of 27 patients with EVD received care in biocontainment units. The Special Pathogens Research Network (SPRN) was established in the United States in November 2016 to provide an organizational structure to leverage the expertise of the 10 Regional Ebola and Other Special Pathogen Treatment Centers (RESPTCs); it was intended to develop and support infrastructure to improve readiness to conduct clinical research in the United States. The network enables the rapid activation and coordination of clinical research in the event of an epidemic and facilitates opportunities for multicenter research when the RESPTCs are actively caring for patients requiring a biocontainment unit. Here we provide an overview of opportunities identified in the clinical research infrastructure during the West Africa EVD epidemic and the SPRN activities to meet the ongoing challenges in the context of Ebola virus and other special pathogens.

‘Hilliard’ (Reg. no. CV‐1163, PI 676271), a soft red winter (SRW) wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) developed and tested as VA11W‐108 by the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station, was released in March ...2015. Hilliard was derived from the cross ‘25R47’/‘Jamestown’. Hilliard is widely adapted, from Texas to Ontario, Canada, and provides producers with a mid‐season, medium height, awned, semi‐dwarf (Rht2) cultivar that has very high yield potential, good straw strength, and intermediate grain volume weight and quality. It expresses moderate to high levels of resistance to most diseases prevalent in the eastern United States and Ontario. In the 2016–2018 USDA‐ARS Uniform SRW Wheat nurseries, Hilliard ranked first in grain yield in the southern nursery across all 3 yr (5,147–5,758 kg ha−1). In the uniform eastern nursery, it ranked first for grain yield in 2016 (6,159 kg ha−1) and 2017 (5,633 kg ha−1) and second in 2018 (5,515 kg ha−1). Grain volume weights of Hilliard were similar to overall trial averages in the uniform southern (73.4–75.2 kg hl−1) and eastern (70–75.8 kg hl−1) nurseries. Hilliard has soft grain texture with flour softness equivalent values varying from 58.1 to 61.7 g 100 g−1. Straight grade flour yields on a Quadrumat Senior mill varied from 66.8 to 68.4 g kg−1. Flour protein concentration varied from 7.0 to 9.1 g 100 g−1 and gluten strength from 108 to 128 g 100 g−1, as measured by lactic acid solvent retention capacity. Cookie spread diameter varied from 18.3 to 18.6 cm.

The association between average annual sunlight energy and age-specific ovarian cancer mortality rates in counties containing the 100 largest US cities was evaluated for 1979-1988. Simple linear regression was performed by decade using sunlight and ozone as independent variables and ovarian cancer rates as the dependent variable. Multiple regression was used to adjust for ozone and sulphur dioxide, since these atmospheric components may absorb ultraviolet light.
Fatal ovarian cancer in these areas was inversely proportional to mean annual intensity of local sunlight in a univariate analysis (P = 0.0001), and in a regression adjusted for air pollution (P = 0.04). The association was also seen when restricted to 27 major urban areas of the US; however, probably due to a small sample size, this statistic did not reach significance.
This ecologic study supports the hypothesis that sunlight may be a protective factor for ovarian cancer mortality.

SIRE1 is a 2000-copy member of the Ty1/copia retroelement family found in the soybean genome and is closely related to sireviruses found in the genomes of other legumes. Although these elements ...closely resemble typical plant members of the Ty1/copia family, they are unusual in that they possess an envelope-like coding region immediately downstream of the reverse transcriptase gene. Despite its copy number, very few members of the SIRE1 family are currently present in publicly available genomic assemblies or draft contigs. However, fragments of family members are well-represented as BAC-ends in the GenBank Genome Survey Sequence database. This database was queried using the 5' and 3' ends of SIRE1 in order to catalog sequences into which SIRE1 members have integrated. Seven hundred and eighty-one unique SIRE1 insertions were identified and the majority of insertion sites constituted other repetitive elements, including Class I and Class II transposable elements and satellite DNAs. Ninety-four insertions were in single- or low-copy number sequences and three of these were homologous to characterized protein-coding genes. Examination of the ten bases flanking either side of SIRE1 revealed no clear consensus sequence, but the the distributions of A, C, G, and T at most of the positions were biased with strong statistical significance.
