We present spectroscopic redshifts of mJy submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), which have been identified from the ALMA follow-up observations of 870 m detected sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field ...South (the ALMA-LESS survey). We derive spectroscopic redshifts for 52 SMGs, with a median of z = 2.4 0.1. However, the distribution features a high-redshift tail, with ∼23% of the SMGs at . Spectral diagnostics suggest that the SMGs are young starbursts, and the velocity offsets between the nebular emission and UV ISM absorption lines suggest that many are driving winds, with velocity offsets of up to 2000 km s−1. Using the spectroscopic redshifts and the extensive UV-to-radio photometry in this field, we produce optimized spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using Magphys, and use the SEDs to infer a median stellar mass of = (6 1)× 1010 M for our SMGs with spectroscopic redshift. By combining these stellar masses with the star formation rates (measured from the far-infrared SEDs), we show that SMGs (on average) lie a factor of ∼5 above the so-called "main sequence" at . We provide this library of 52 template fits with robust and uniquely well-sampled SEDs as a resource for future studies of SMGs, and also release the spectroscopic catalog of ∼2000 (mostly infrared-selected) galaxies targeted as part of the spectroscopic campaign.
We present a measurement of the spatial clustering of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) at z= 1-3. Using data from the 870 μm Large APEX Bolometer Camera (LABOCA) submillimetre survey of the Extended ...Chandra Deep Field-South, we employ a novel technique to measure the cross-correlation between SMGs and galaxies, accounting for the full probability distributions for photometric redshifts of the galaxies. From the observed projected two-point cross-correlation function we derive the linear bias and characteristic dark matter halo masses for the SMGs. We detect clustering in the cross-correlation between SMGs and galaxies at the >4σ level. Accounting for the clustering of galaxies from their autocorrelation function, we estimate an autocorrelation length for SMGs of
Mpc assuming a power-law slope γ= 1.8, and derive a corresponding dark matter halo mass of
. Based on the evolution of dark matter haloes derived from simulations, we show that that the z= 0 descendants of SMGs are typically massive (∼2-3L*) elliptical galaxies residing in moderate- to high-mass groups (
). From the observed clustering we estimate an SMG lifetime of ∼100 Myr, consistent with lifetimes derived from gas consumption times and star formation time-scales, although with considerable uncertainties. The clustering of SMGs at z∼ 2 is consistent with measurements for optically selected quasi-stellar objects (QSOs), supporting evolutionary scenarios in which powerful starbursts and QSOs occur in the same systems. Given that SMGs reside in haloes of characteristic mass ∼6 × 1012 h
−1 M⊙, we demonstrate that the redshift distribution of SMGs can be described remarkably well by the combination of two effects: the cosmological growth of structure and the evolution of the molecular gas fraction in galaxies. We conclude that the powerful starbursts in SMGs likely represent a short-lived but universal phase in massive galaxy evolution, associated with the transition between cold gas-rich, star-forming galaxies and passively evolving systems.
We derive photometric redshifts from 17-band optical to mid-infrared photometry of 78 robust radio, 24-μm and Spitzer IRAC counterparts to 72 of the 126 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) selected at 870 ...μm by LABOCA observations in the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South (ECDF-S). We test the photometric redshifts of the SMGs against the extensive archival spectroscopy in the ECDF-S. The median photometric redshift of identified SMGs is z= 2.2 ± 0.1, the standard deviation is σ
z
= 0.9 and we identify 11 (∼15 per cent) high-redshift (z≥ 3) SMGs. A statistical analysis of sources in the error circles of unidentified SMGs identifies a population of possible counterparts with a redshift distribution peaking at z= 2.5 ± 0.2, which likely comprises ∼60 per cent of the unidentified SMGs. This confirms that the bulk of the undetected SMGs are coeval with those detected in the radio/mid-infrared. We conclude that at most ∼15 per cent of all the SMGs are below the flux limits of our IRAC observations and thus may lie at z≳ 3 and hence at most ∼30 per cent of all SMGs have z≳ 3. We estimate that the full S
870 μm > 4 mJy SMG population has a median redshift of 2.5 ± 0.5. In contrast to previous suggestions, we find no significant correlation between submillimetre flux and redshift. The median stellar mass of the SMGs derived from spectral energy distribution fitting is (9.1 ± 0.5) × 1010 M⊙ although we caution that the uncertainty in the star formation histories results in a factor of ∼5 uncertainty in these stellar masses. Using a single temperature modified blackbody fit with β= 1.5, the median characteristic dust temperature of SMGs is 37.4 ± 1.4 K. The infrared luminosity function shows that SMGs at z= 2-3 typically have higher far-infrared luminosities and luminosity density than those at z= 1-2. This is mirrored in the evolution of the star formation rate density (SFRD) for SMGs which peaks at z∼ 2. The maximum contribution of bright SMGs to the global SFRD (∼5 per cent for SMGs with S
870 μm≳ 4 mJy or ∼50 per cent extrapolated to SMGs with S
870 μm > 1 mJy) also occurs at z∼ 2.
We study the co-existence of star formation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in Chandra X-ray-selected AGN by analyzing stacked 870 {mu}m submillimeter emission from a deep and wide map of ...the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS), obtained with the LABOCA instrument at the APEX telescope. The total X-ray sample of 895 sources with median redshift z {approx} 1 drawn from the combined (E)CDFS X-ray catalogs is detected at >11sigma significance at a mean submillimeter flux of 0.49 +- 0.04 mJy, corresponding to a typical star formation rate (SFR) around 30 M{sub sun} yr{sup -1} for a T = 35 K, beta = 1.5 graybody far-infrared spectral energy distribution. The good signal-to-noise ratio permits stacking analyses for major subgroups, splitting the sample by redshift, intrinsic luminosity, and AGN obscuration properties. We observe a trend of SFR increasing with redshift. An increase of SFR with AGN luminosity is indicated at the highest L{sub 2-10{sub keV}} {approx}> 10{sup 44} erg s{sup -1} luminosities only. Increasing trends with X-ray obscuration as expected in some AGN evolutionary scenarios are not observed for the bulk of the X-ray AGN sample but may be present for the highest intrinsic luminosity objects with L{sub 2-10{sub keV}} {approx}> 10{sup 44} erg s{sup -1}. This behavior suggests a transition between two modes in the co-existence of AGN activity and star formation. For the bulk of the sample, the X-ray luminosity and obscuration of the AGN are not intimately linked to the global SFR of their hosts. The hosts are likely massive and forming stars secularly, at rates similar to the pervasive star formation seen in massive galaxies without an AGN at similar redshifts. In these systems, star formation is not linked to a specific state of the AGN and the period of moderately luminous AGN activity may not highlight a major evolutionary transition of the galaxy. The change indicated toward more intense star formation, and a more pronounced increase in SFRs between unobscured and obscured AGN reported in the literature at highest (L{sub 2-10{sub keV}} {approx}> 10{sup 44} erg s{sup -1}) luminosities suggests that these luminous AGNs follow an evolutionary path on which obscured AGN activity and intense star formation are linked, possibly via merging. Comparison to local hard X-ray-selected AGN supports this interpretation. SFRs in the hosts of moderate luminosity AGN at z {approx} 1 are an order of magnitude higher than at z {approx} 0, following the increase in the non-AGN massive galaxy population. At high AGN luminosities, hosts on the evolutionary link/merger path emerge from this secular level of star formation.
ABSTRACT We present post-cryogenic Spitzer imaging at 3.6 and 4.5 m with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) of the Spitzer/HETDEX Exploratory Large-Area (SHELA) survey. SHELA covers 24 deg2 of the ...Sloan Digital Sky Survey "Stripe 82" region, and falls within the footprints of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) and the Dark Energy Survey. The HETDEX blind R ∼ 800 spectroscopy will produce ∼200,000 redshifts from the Ly emission for galaxies in the range 1.9 < z < 3.5, and an additional ∼200,000 redshifts from the O ii emission for galaxies at z < 0.5. When combined with deep ugriz images from the Dark Energy Camera, K-band images from NEWFIRM, and other ancillary data, the IRAC photometry from Spitzer will enable a broad range of scientific studies of the relationship between structure formation, galaxy stellar mass, halo mass, the presence of active galactic nuclei, and environment over a co-moving volume of ∼0.5 Gpc3 at 1.9 < z < 3.5. Here, we discuss the properties of the SHELA IRAC data set, including the data acquisition, reduction, validation, and source catalogs. Our tests show that the images and catalogs are 80% (50%) complete to limiting magnitudes of 22.0 (22.6) AB mag in the detection image, which is constructed from the weighted sum of the IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 m images. The catalogs reach limiting sensitivities of 1.1 Jy at both 3.6 and 4.5 m (1 , for R = 2″ circular apertures). As a demonstration of the science, we present IRAC number counts, examples of highly temporally variable sources, and galaxy surface density profiles of rich galaxy clusters. In the spirit of the Spitzer Exploratory programs, we provide all of the images and catalogs as part of the publication.
ABSTRACT
We present and validate 20 deg2 of overlapping synthetic imaging surveys representing the full depth of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope High-Latitude Imaging Survey (HLIS) and 5 yr of ...observations of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). The two synthetic surveys are summarized, with reference to the existing 300 deg2 of LSST simulated imaging produced as part of Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) Data Challenge 2 (DC2). Both synthetic surveys observe the same simulated DESC DC2 universe. For the synthetic Roman survey, we simulate for the first time fully chromatic images along with the detailed physics of the Sensor Chip Assemblies derived from lab measurements using the flight detectors. The simulated imaging and resulting pixel-level measurements of photometric properties of objects span a wavelength range of ∼0.3–2.0 μm. We also describe updates to the Roman simulation pipeline, changes in how astrophysical objects are simulated relative to the original DC2 simulations, and the resulting simulated Roman data products. We use these simulations to explore the relative fraction of unrecognized blends in LSST images, finding that 20–30 per cent of objects identified in LSST images with i-band magnitudes brighter than 25 can be identified as multiple objects in Roman images. These simulations provide a unique testing ground for the development and validation of joint pixel-level analysis techniques of ground- and space-based imaging data sets in the second half of the 2020s – in particular the case of joint Roman–LSST analyses.
We present near-infrared integral-field spectroscopic observations targeting Halpha in eight submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at z= 1.3-2.5 using the Very Large Telescope/Spectrograph for Integral Field ...Observations in the Near Infrared, obtaining significant detections for six of them. The star formation rates derived from the Halpha emission are ~100 M sub(middot in circle) yr super(-1), which account for only ~20%-30% of the infrared-derived values, thus suggesting that these systems are very dusty. Two of these systems present Nii/Halpha ratios indicative of the presence of an active galactic nucleus. We mapped the spatial distribution and kinematics of the star-forming regions in these galaxies on kiloparsec scales. In general, the Halpha morphologies tend to be highly irregular and/or clumpy, showing spatial extents of ~3-11 kpc. We find evidence for significant spatial offsets, of ~0".1-0".4 or 1.2-3.4 kpc, between the Halpha and the continuum emission in three of the sources. Performing a kinemetry analysis, we conclude that the majority of the sample is not consistent with disk-like rotation-dominated kinematics. Instead, they tend to show irregular and/or clumpy and turbulent velocity and velocity dispersion fields. This can be interpreted as evidence for a scenario in which these extreme star formation episodes are triggered by galaxy-galaxy interactions and major mergers. In contrast to recent results for SMGs, these sources appear to follow the same relations between gas and star-forming rate densities as less luminous and/or normal star-forming galaxies.
We present the Spitzer IRAC/MUSYC Public Legacy Survey in the Extended CDF-South (SIMPLE), which consists of deep IRAC observations covering the ~1600 arcmin2 area surrounding GOODS-S. The limiting ...magnitudes of the SIMPLE IRAC mosaics typically are 23.8, 23.6, 21.9, and 21.7, at 3.6 Delta *mm, 4.5 Delta *mm, 5.8 Delta *mm, and 8.0 Delta *mm, respectively (5 Delta *s total point source magnitudes in AB). The SIMPLE IRAC images are combined with the 10' X 15' GOODS IRAC mosaics in the center. We give detailed descriptions of the observations, data reduction, and properties of the final images, as well as the detection and photometry methods used to build a catalog. Using published optical and near-infrared data from the Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC), we construct an IRAC-selected catalog, containing photometry in UBVRIz'JHK, 3.6 Delta *mm, 4.5 Delta *mm, 5.8 Delta *mm, and 8.0 Delta *mm. The catalog contains 43,782 sources with S/N >5 at 3.6 Delta *mm, 19,993 of which have 13-band photometry. We compare this catalog to the publicly available MUSYC and FIREWORKS catalogs and discuss the differences. Using a high signal-to-noise sub-sample of 3391 sources with (3.6 + 4.5)/2 < 21.2, we investigate the star formation rate history of massive galaxies out to z ~ 1.8. We find that at z ~ 1.8 at least 30% ? 7% of the most massive galaxies (M * >1011 M ) are passively evolving, in agreement with earlier results from surveys covering less area.
We present a sensitive 870 Delta *mm survey of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS) combining 310 hr of observing time with the Large Apex BOlometer Camera (LABOCA) on the APEX telescope. ...The LABOCA ECDFS Submillimetre Survey (LESS) covers the full 30' X 30' field size of the ECDFS and has a uniform noise level of Delta *s870 Delta *mm 1.2 mJy beam-1. LESS is thus the largest contiguous deep submillimeter survey undertaken to date. The noise properties of our map show clear evidence that we are beginning to be affected by confusion noise. We present a catalog of 126 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) detected with a significance level above 3.7 Delta *s, at which level we expect five false detections given our map area of 1260 arcmin2. The ECDFS exhibits a deficit of bright SMGs relative to previously studied blank fields but not of normal star-forming galaxies that dominate the extragalactic background light (EBL). This is in line with the underdensities observed for optically defined high redshift source populations in the ECDFS (BzKs, DRGs, optically bright active galactic nucleus, and massive K-band-selected galaxies). The differential source counts in the full field are well described by a power law with a slope of Delta *a = -3.2, comparable to the results from other fields. We show that the shape of the source counts is not uniform across the field. Instead, it steepens in regions with low SMG density. Towards the highest overdensities we measure a source-count shape consistent with previous surveys. The integrated 870 Delta *mm flux densities of our source-count models down to S 870 Delta *mm = 0.5 mJy account for >65% of the estimated EBL from COBE measurements. We have investigated the clustering of SMGs in the ECDFS by means of a two-point correlation function and find evidence for strong clustering on angular scales <1' with a significance of 3.4 Delta *s. Assuming a power-law dependence for the correlation function and a typical redshift distribution for the SMGs we derive a characteristic angular clustering scale of Delta *c0 = 14'' +/- 7'' and a spatial correlation length of r 0 = 13 +/- 6 h -1 Mpc.
ABSTRACT
Data Challenge 1 (DC1) is the first synthetic data set produced by the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC). DC1 is designed to ...develop and validate data reduction and analysis and to study the impact of systematic effects that will affect the LSST data set. DC1 is comprised of r-band observations of 40 deg2 to 10 yr LSST depth. We present each stage of the simulation and analysis process: (a) generation, by synthesizing sources from cosmological N-body simulations in individual sensor-visit images with different observing conditions; (b) reduction using a development version of the LSST Science Pipelines; and (c) matching to the input cosmological catalogue for validation and testing. We verify that testable LSST requirements pass within the fidelity of DC1. We establish a selection procedure that produces a sufficiently clean extragalactic sample for clustering analyses and we discuss residual sample contamination, including contributions from inefficiency in star–galaxy separation and imperfect deblending. We compute the galaxy power spectrum on the simulated field and conclude that: (i) survey properties have an impact of 50 per cent of the statistical uncertainty for the scales and models used in DC1; (ii) a selection to eliminate artefacts in the catalogues is necessary to avoid biases in the measured clustering; and (iii) the presence of bright objects has a significant impact (2σ–6σ) in the estimated power spectra at small scales (ℓ > 1200), highlighting the impact of blending in studies at small angular scales in LSST.
