Enhancement of light‐harvesting efficiency (LHE) in the red/near‐IR (NIR) region (600–1000 nm) of the solar spectrum is a challenge to improvement of the photovoltaic performances of dye‐sensitized ...solar cells (DSSCs). Therefore, design and development of effective red/NIR photosensitizers are currently a hot topic in DSSCs. BODIPY dyes can offer magnificent characteristics such as sharp and moderately strong absorption, large quantum yields, long excited state lifetimes, good solubility and easy chromatographic separation. From this perspective, recent progress in BODIPY‐sensitized solar cells is reviewed.

A series of three aza-Bodipy donor molecules namely Aza-Bthp, Aza-Sty, and Aza-Fhdt have been synthesized. The compounds exhibit panchromatic absorption spanning approximately 280-1000 nm in the ...solution state and possess suitable energy levels for their usefulness as donors in organic solar cells. Under the optimized conditions, using PC70BM as an acceptor, power conversion efficiencies (PCE%) of 2.44, 1.2, and 2.52 were afforded for Aza-Bthp, Aza-Fhdt, and Aza-Sty respectively.

We report the first high affinity neutral Bodipy fluorophores for selective imaging of mitochondria with notable sensitivity (∼100 nM) and insignificant cytotoxicity even at very high concentration ...(∼100 μM), when tested against HeLa cells. We find that using TT instead of biTh results in an increased degree of order within films cast directly from solution by influencing the self-assembly tendencies of the different molecules. Unlike switching the acceptor subunit, such as FBT for PT, the TT for biTh structural change has little impact on the electronic structure of these molecular semiconductors. Instead, these morphological effects can be understood within the context of the predicted conformational diversity. TT units limit the number of rotational conformations (rotamers) available within this molecular architecture; low rotamer dispersity facilitates self-assembly into ordered domains. As a practical illustration of this greater drive toward self-assembly, we use the TT-containing molecules as donors in bulk heterojunction solar cells with PC
70
BM. Devices with TT-containing molecules show improved photovoltaic performance compared to their previously characterized biTh analogs (d-DTS(PTTh
2
)
2
and p-DTS(FBTTh
2
)
2
) in both as-cast and optimized conditions, with efficiencies up to 6.4% and 8.8% for

Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) being a chromophoric dye molecule has been extensively studied in dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC), imaging, and dye laser application. BODIPY is a stable boron complex ...with a broad absorption and photoluminescence (PL) in the visible region of solar radiation. This class of molecules show anomalous photophysical properties, which varies with concentration of the molecule. Here, we report the thorough analysis of photophysical study after synthesized the BODIPY molecule, which made up of two thiophene BODIPY cores comprising a phenyl spacer in between, coded as TG2 dye molecule. Steady state and time resolved concentration dependent PL reveal that, at very low concentration (nM) TG2 shows both S1 (first excited state) and S2 (second excited state) PL. Importantly, at higher concentration (mM) TG2 found to exist in aggregated state. Optical absorption and PL studies confirmed that TG2 exists in mixture of J-/H- aggregate state. Moreover, femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) analysis has been studied following 400 nm optical pump, which reveals that the excited singlet state converted to the mixed aggregated state with in an average time constant of 6 ps.
We report a series of four efficient photosensitizers (PSs) based on a Bodipy core for photodynamic therapy (PDT). In the absence of hydrophilic functional groups, these PSs have been encapsulated in ...liposomes and examined for photocytotoxicity against human ovarian carcinoma cell line (SK-OV-3). The IC50 values obtained are as low as 0.350 μM, which compete with the classical photosensitizer chlorine E6 (IC50 = 0.39 μM) under similar experimental conditions.
A series of meso-substituted thienyl BODIPY analogues (1, 1a-g) have been designed and synthesized. Among those, compounds 1c, 1d and 1e show biocompatibility towards endothelial cells whereas 1c and ...1d show significant cytotoxicity towards cancerous cells. The formation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the activation of the apoptotic protein may be a plausible mechanism for the anti-proliferative nature of 1c and 1d. Additionally, compounds 1c, 1d, and 1e fluoresce inside the cancer cells. The combined results suggest the future theranostic (therapeutics + diagnostics) applications of 1c and 1d in cancer diseases.
