Matrix isolation is a method which plays a key role in isolating and characterizing highly reactive molecular radicals. However, the isolation matrices, usually composed of noble gases or small ...diamagnetic molecules, are stable only at very low temperatures, as they begin to desegregate even above a few tens of Kelvin. Here we report on the successful isolation of CH3˙ radicals in the cages of a nearly inert clathrate-SiO2 matrix. This host is found to exhibit a comparable inertness with respect to that of most conventional noble gas matrices but it is characterized by a peculiar thermal stability. The latter property is related to the covalent nature of the host material and gives the opportunity to study the confined radicals from a few degrees of Kelvin up to at least room temperature. Thanks to this advantage we were able to explore with continuity for the first time the CH3˙ rotor properties by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, starting from the quantum rotations which are observable only at the lowest temperatures (T ≈ 4 K), going through the gradual transition to the classical motion (4 K < T < 30 K), and ending with the properties of the fully classical rotor (T > 30 K). The method of isolation presented here is found to be very effective and promising, as it is expected to be applicable to a large variety of different molecular radicals.

Agarose gel (agargel) composites with commercial and laboratory made silver nanoparticles were prepared by a wet solution method at room temperature. The gel composites were used for pigment ...extraction and detection by Raman spectroscopy. Red (alizarin) and violet (crystal violet) pigments deposited on paper were extracted by the composites and were investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Evaluation was carried out of the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) effect induced by the silver nanoparticles embedded in the gel. A kinetic approach as a function of time was used to determine the efficiency of pigments extraction by composites deposition. A non-invasive extraction process of few minutes is demonstrated. This process induces active SERS for both used pigments. The reported results show the full exploitability of agargel silver nanoparticle composites for the extraction of pigments from paper based artworks.
Purpose of Review
We aimed to reach an Italian multidisciplinary consensus on some crucial aspects of treatment decision making in CRSwNP, following 2 years of clinical experience in order to support ...specialists in the management of CRSwNP in clinical practice. We addressed issues relating to therapeutic decision-making and shared criteria for the treatment choice, as well as appropriate timing and criteria for evaluating treatment response, and highlighted the need for repeated multidisciplinary assessments.
Recent Findings
A national survey has been conducted recently to understand how rhinology practice has changed in Italy with the advent of biologics and how this affects patients with uncontrolled, severe CRSwNP. Despite the many published consensus documents, practical recommendations, and protocols on the use of biologics in CRSwNP, heterogenous behaviors in practice are still observed mainly conditioned by the novelty of the topic.
Summary
The consensus procedure followed a modified Delphi approach. The scientific board included 18 otorhinolaryngologists and 8 allergists, who selected the 4 main topics to be addressed and developed overall 20 statements. Consensus on these statements was sought by a larger group of 48 additional experts, through two rounds of voting, the first web-based, the second in presence with discussion and possible refinement of the statements. The statements reaching an average score ≥ 7 at the second voting round were approved. Five statements were proposed for each of the following topics: baseline evaluation of patients eligible for biologic therapy; choice between different therapeutic options; assessment of the response to biologic treatment; multidisciplinary management. At the first voting round, 19 out of the 20 statements reached a mean score ≥ 7. Following the discussion and a few consequent amendments, at the second round of voting all the 20 statements were approved.
Laryngotracheitis is a common disease, mainly characterized by dysphonia, cough, and sore throat. The diagnosis is usually based on the clinical ground, and antibiotic therapy is frequently used in ...clinical practice. However, antibiotics frequently induce intestinal dysbiosis associated with some clinical problems. The current clinical experience was conducted in patients with pharyngotonsillitis and treated with antibiotics. A one-month course of a probiotic mixture (Abincol® containing Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 million living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01 (200 million living cells), was prescribed in the Group A, and was compared with no add-on treatment, such as the Group B. Patients were evaluated at baseline (T0), at the end of antibiotic treatment (T1), at the end of probiotic course (T2), and at the end of 3-month follow-up (T3). Globally, 833 outpatients with laryngotracheitis were enrolled: 425 in Group A and 408 in Group B. All of them were treated with a 7-10-day course of antibiotic therapy. The probiotic mixture reduced the duration of symptoms associated with antibiotic therapy already at the end of the antibiotic cycle. The intergroup comparison showed that probiotic group patients experienced less fever, tiredness, headache, pain, malaise, diarrhea, and nausea (p<0.001 for all) than control patients at T1. The probiotic course reduced the possible clinical relapse, and the use of additional medications at T2 and T3. In conclusion, the present clinical experience demonstrated that a probiotic mixture containing Lactobacillus plantarum LP01, Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02, and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies delbrueckii, was able to rapidly reduce symptoms associated with antibiotic therapy in patients with laryngotracheitis.
In a recent work (Buscarino et al 2009 Phys. Rev. B 80 094202), by studying the properties of the 29Si hyperfine structure of the E' Delta *g point defect, we have proposed a model able to describe ...quantitatively the densification process taking place upon electron irradiation in amorphous SiO2 (a-SiO2). In particular, we have shown that it proceeds heterogeneously, through the nucleation of confined densified regions statistically dispersed into the whole volume of the material. In the present experimental investigation, by using a similar approach on a wider set of materials, we explore how this process is influenced by impurities, such as OH and Cl, typically involved in relevant concentrations in commercial materials. Our results indicate that the degree of local densification within the structurally modified regions is influenced by the OH content of the material: the higher the OH content, the lower the local degree of densification of the irradiated materials. In contrast, no relevant contribution to the densification process induced by electron irradiation in a-SiO2 can be ascribed to Cl impurities up to ppm by weight.

A one-month course of a probiotic mixture (Abincol® containing Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 million of living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies delbrueckii LDD01 (200 million of living cells), was prescribed in the Group A, and was compared with no add-on treatment, such as the Group B. Patients were evaluated at baseline (T0), at the end of antibiotic treatment (T1), at the end of probiotic course (T2), and at the end of 3-month follow-up (T3). Globally, 1118 outpatients were enrolled. Acute pharyngotonsillitis affected 795 subjects: 396 in Group A and 399 in Group B. Chronic pharyngotonsillitis affected 323 outpatients: 158 in Group A and 165 in Group B. All patients were usually treated with a 7-10-day course of antibiotic therapy. In patients with acute pharyngotonsillitis, the probiotic mixture significantly reduced the duration of all the symptoms (p<0.001 for all), except for the urinary tract infection, associated with antibiotic therapy which was already at the end of the antibiotic cycle (T1). The intergroup analysis showed that patients with chronic pharyngotonsillitis in Group A had significantly less tiredness, pain, and malaise (p<0.001 for all) than patients in Group B at T1. The probiotic course reduced the possible clinical relapse, and the use of additional medications at T2 and T3 in patients with both acute and chronic pharyngotonsillitis. In conclusion, the present clinical experience demonstrated that a probiotic mixture containing Lactobacillus plantarum LP01, Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02, and Lactobacillus delbrueckii, was able to quickly reduce symptoms, possible relapse, and use of additional medications, associated with antibiotic therapy, in patients with both acute and chronic pharyngotonsillitis.
