The study aims to estimate the relative contributions of the two drainage basins of the Aliakmon and Axios rivers which, since the Mid-Holocene, have been responsible for building the largest deltaic ...area in Greece. Sediments from five cores located in the central part of the Thessaloniki Plain have been studied for their environmental changes using paleontological and sedimentological methods. Chronostratigraphical evidence was obtained from
14C AMS dating of marine shells, peat and organic sediment samples. During the Holocene marine transgression, this large coastal plain was a shallow marine bay reaching approx. 35 km inland circa the 4th millennium BC, from which the sea subsequently regressed to the east. Around the middle of the 3rd millennium BC, strong fluvial deposition of Aliakmon, to the east, and of Axios, to the north, occurred and was responsible of a gradual change to lagoonal and limnic environmental conditions. Around the 5th Century BC, a freshwater lake occupied the westernmost part of the plain.
Microfaunal identification, together with magnetic susceptibility measurements, and grain-size analysis reveal three main environments of sediment deposition that reflect combinations of both concentrated and dispersed sources of magnetic/source minerals. Using remote sensing and a combination of spectral bands (LANDSAT TM imagery), we identify former fluvial levees and a freshwater lake, and give a spatial interpretation of the rivers' influences in building this deltaic complex. The mechanisms of edification of the plain as well as the roles played by Aliakmon and Axios sedimentation are described.
The site of Nea Nikomideia is one of the oldest and most important Neolithic settlements in Northern Greece and the wider Balkan Peninsula, having been first occupied by early farmers at around ...6500 cal. BC. Important archaeological excavations conducted in the 1960s suggested that the settlement was located close to an ancient coastline during the Neolithic. However, palaeoenvironmental change and landscape evolution in the vicinity of the site have seldom been considered in detail. Six cores from the western and central parts of the Thessaloniki Plain were therefore drilled in 2008 and subjected to palaeoenvironmental analyses, including sedimentology (LASER grain size and magnetic susceptibility measurements), chemical analysis (loss on ignition and carbonate content), stable isotopes analysis coupled with X-Ray diffraction measurements, molluscan faunal analysis and radiocarbon dating. The recognition of several important facies representing freshwater (lacustrine and fluvial) and brackish (lagoonal and marine-influenced) conditions have shed light on the environmental and landscape evolution of the western part of the Thessaloniki Plain and associated impacts on human occupation during the last 10,000 years. The general sequence proved in the cores indicates the predominance of lacustrine conditions during the early Holocene, with the occurrence of a marine transgression at c. 6000/5800 cal. B.C. This major palaeoenvironmental change corresponds with the 8.2 Ka event and is a likely cause for the desertion of Nea Nikomideia at that time. Subsequent regression of the shoreline to the east saw that the area around Nea Nikomideia returns to predominantly terrestrial conditions and the deposition of lacustrine and fluvial deposits.
Dans le cadre d’un programme de recherche pluridisciplinaire dirigé par le CNRS, en collaboration avec l’École suisse d’archéologie en Grèce (ESAG), l’École britannique d’archéologie d’Athènes, ...l’Université Harokopiou d’Athènes et l’Éphorie des Antiquités d’Eubée, différents sites d’occupation datant du Néolithique à la période antique, et localisés le long de la rive septentrionale du golfe sud-eubéen (Eubée, Grèce) ont été incorporés dans un programme d’étude géoarchéologique visant à reconstituer l’évolution globale des paysages au cours de l’Holocène, en lien avec l’histoire de l’occupation humaine. À ce titre, les sites de Lefkandi, d’Érétrie, d’Amarynthos et du delta du Lilas ont plus particulièrement retenu l’attention en raison de leur importance archéologique et d’une occupation humaine très bien documentée. Les méthodes d’étude se sont fondées sur la réalisation de 26 carottages implantés dans des plaines littorales. Les analyses de laboratoire ont été les suivantes : l’identification malacologique et la granulométrie des dépôts ont permis de caractériser les paléoenvironnements, l’étude palynologique d’une séquence prélevée à Amarynthos, couvrant les périodes 5 500-4 300 et 1 100-850 av. J.-C., a permis de reconstituer l’histoire de la végétation au cours du Néolithique et au début de l’âge du Fer. Enfin la réalisation de 71 datations par le radiocarbone a facilité l’obtention de séquences chronostratigraphiques de référence pour chacun des sites étudiés. Les résultats permettent de i) reconstituer la mobilité latérale du trait de côte depuis le début de l’Holocène entre le delta du Lilas et Amarynthos, où des phases marquées de progradation du trait de côte sont enregistrées à la fin du ive/début du iiie millénaire, au début du ier millénaire av. J.-C. et au cours de la période ottomane (xve-xixe siècles) alors qu’un phénomène très localisé d’incursion marine est enregistré à Érétrie au cours du iie millénaire avant notre ère, ii) proposer une courbe de remontée du niveau marin au cours des huit derniers millénaires en Égée centre-occidentale où la tectonique régionale contribue à un phénomène global de surrection des côtes du secteur attico-eubéen compensé localement par des phénomènes de subsidence et iii) restituer pour la première fois en contexte attico-eubéen l’histoire de la végétation en lien avec les activités d’origine anthropique depuis le Néolithique dans le secteur d’Amarynthos, mettant en évidence une forte emprise des sociétés agro-pastorales depuis au moins le Néolithique récent, jusqu’à l’époque Géométrique, dans un contexte de paysage forestier très ouvert.

In 2002, the unexpected discovery of Hellenistic architectural blocks, buried in 8 m of alluvium, found displaced in a former bed of the river of Balkh, brought about a programme of surveys and ...excavations under the aegis of the French Archaeological Mission in Bactria. The geoarchaeological side of the programme focused on the drawing of a regional geomorphological map then on the identification, mapping and dating of the palaeochannels of the river of Balkh. We established the chronology of several fluvial channel generations by association with archaeological settlements of different eras (Bronze Age, Bactro-Achaemenid period, Kushan period, Islamic period) and with optically stimulated luminescence dating carried out on alluvium deposits. The present riverbed leading up to Aqcha was formed during the Islamic period. We suspect the primary agent of this change in the river channel to, be tectonic activity and the activation of a blind fault crossing the floodplain. We identified a northern Bactro-Achaemenid aqueduct, currently located in the desert area separating the plain of Balkh from the Amu Darya.
