We report the results of two multichord stellar occultations by the dwarf planet (1) Ceres that were observed from Brazil on 2010 August 17, and from the USA on 2013 October 25. Four positive ...detections were obtained for the 2010 occultation, and nine for the 2013 occultation. Elliptical models were adjusted to the observed chords to obtain Ceres’ size and shape. Two limb-fitting solutions were studied for each event. The first one is a nominal solution with an indeterminate polar aspect angle. The second one was constrained by the pole coordinates as given by Drummond et al. Assuming a Maclaurin spheroid, we determine an equatorial diameter of 972 ± 6 km and an apparent oblateness of 0.08 ± 0.03 as our best solution. These results are compared to all available size and shape determinations for Ceres made so far, and shall be confirmed by the NASA's Dawn space mission.
We present results derived from the first multi-chord stellar occultations by the transneptunian object (50000) Quaoar, observed on 2011 May 4 and 2012 February 17, and from a single-chord ...occultation observed on 2012 October 15. If the timing of the five chords obtained in 2011 were correct, then Quaoar would possess topographic features (crater or mountain) that would be too large for a body of this mass. An alternative model consists in applying time shifts to some chords to account for possible timing errors. Satisfactory elliptical fits to the chords are then possible, yielding an equivalent radius R sub(equiv) = 555+ or -2.5 km and geometric visual albedo p sub(v) = 0.109+ or -0.007. Assuming that Quaoar is a Maclaurin spheroid with an indeterminate polar aspect angle, we derive a true oblateness of member of = 0.087 super(+0.0268) sub(-0.0175), an equatorial radius of 569 super(+24) sub(-17)km, and a density of 1.99 + or - 0.46 g cm super(-3). The orientation of our preferred solution in the plane of the sky implies that Quaoar's satellite Weywot cannot have an equatorial orbit. Finally, we detect no global atmosphere around Quaoar, considering a pressure upper limit of about 20 nbar for a pure methane atmosphere.
Pluto and Eris are icy dwarf planets with nearly identical sizes, comparable densities and similar surface compositions as revealed by spectroscopic studies. Pluto possesses an atmosphere whereas ...Eris does not; the difference probably arises from their differing distances from the Sun, and explains their different albedos. Makemake is another icy dwarf planet with a spectrum similar to Eris and Pluto, and is currently at a distance to the Sun intermediate between the two. Although Makemake's size (1,420 ± 60 km) and albedo are roughly known, there has been no constraint on its density and there were expectations that it could have a Pluto-like atmosphere. Here we report the results from a stellar occultation by Makemake on 2011 April 23. Our preferred solution that fits the occultation chords corresponds to a body with projected axes of 1,430 ± 9 km (1σ) and 1,502 ± 45 km, implying a V-band geometric albedo p(V) = 0.77 ± 0.03. This albedo is larger than that of Pluto, but smaller than that of Eris. The disappearances and reappearances of the star were abrupt, showing that Makemake has no global Pluto-like atmosphere at an upper limit of 4-12 nanobar (1σ) for the surface pressure, although a localized atmosphere is possible. A density of 1.7 ± 0.3 g cm(-3) is inferred from the data.

The Centaur (10199) Chariklo has the first rings system discovered around a small object. It was first observed using stellar occultation in 2013. Stellar occultations allow the determination of ...sizes and shapes with kilometre accuracy and obtain characteristics of the occulting object and its vicinity. Using stellar occultations observed between 2017 and 2020, we aim at constraining Chariklo's and its rings physical parameters. We also determine the rings' structure, and obtain precise astrometrical positions of Chariklo. We predicted and organised several observational campaigns of stellar occultations by Chariklo. Occultation light curves were measured from the data sets, from which ingress and egress times, and rings' width and opacity were obtained. These measurements, combined with results from previous works, allow us to obtain significant constraints on Chariklo's shape and rings' structure. We characterise Chariklo's ring system (C1R and C2R), and obtain radii and pole orientations that are consistent with, but more accurate than, results from previous occultations. We confirmed the detection of W-shaped structures within C1R and an evident variation of radial width. The observed width ranges between 4.8 and 9.1 km with a mean value of 6.5 km. One dual observation (visible and red) does not reveal any differences in the C1R opacity profiles, indicating ring particle's size larger than a few microns. The C1R ring eccentricity is found to be smaller than 0.022 (3-sigma), and its width variations may indicate an eccentricity higher than 0.005. We fit a tri-axial shape to Chariklo's detections over eleven occultations and determine that Chariklo is consistent with an ellipsoid with semi-axes of 143.8, 135.2 and 99.1 km. Ultimately, we provided seven astrometric positions at a milliarcseconds accuracy level, based on Gaia EDR3, and use it to improve Chariklo's ephemeris.
The relationship between benthic macroinvertebrates and environmental variables from 42 Italian lakes were analysed with the aim of developing a biotic index.
In the investigated lakes, 570 species ...were found of which 373 belonged to the family of Chironomidae and 85 to the class of oligochaeta. Rare species, those present in less than 10 samples, were excluded from the analysis, leaving 57 species for data analysis.
Multivariate analysis: canonical correlation analysis (CANON) and multivariate analysis of variance and covariance (MANCOVA) were carried out on a large database of 1060 sampling points, for which both environmental data (16 chemical and morphometric variables) and 57 species counts from soft bottom samples were available. In addition, a second dataset of 94 sites from small lakes sampled in 2005 in Northern Italy (Lombardy), was analysed for comparison.
The data analysis (CANON) from the large database gave the following results:

the first canonical variate was related to conductivity, pH and alkalinity and accounted for 17% of the total variation;
(2)
the second canonical variate was related to total phosphorus, N-NH
4 and dissolved oxygen, and accounted for 15% of the total variation;
(3)
lake maximum depth, volume and water temperature were related to the third canonical variate, which accounted for 14% of the source of variation.
The analysis of the database from small lakes revealed that in the plane of the first two canonical variates dissolved oxygen was inversely correlated with the depth of sampling and that the second canonical variate showed an inverse relationship between transparency and nutrients.
MANCOVA found evidence for differences between lake types and sampling years, confirmed the CANON results and allowed the quantification of the contribution of different target variables on species composition.
A trophic status index was calculated ranking percentage oxygen saturation (O
2 %sat), transparency (transp) and total phosphorus (TP). The means of O
2 %sat, transp and TP weighted by the species abundances were calculated to have optimum values for each species; a benthic quality index was then obtained by multiplying the weighted means of O
2 %sat, transp and TP by species abundances and dividing the product by the total number of specimens present at each station. A significant correlation was observed between trophic status and the benthic quality index. A good agreement was also observed between the indexes calculated using the large database and the second dataset on small lakes.

Benthic macroinvertebrates are an essential component of freshwater environments. The ecotoxicological risk of benthic communities, estimated through the assay of biochemical markers, can be used as ...an early warning signal for environment alterations. In this work the activities of a number of enzymes, regarded as potential biomarker of exposure to pollutants (catalase, acetylcholinesterase, glutathione-S-transferase) was determined in homogenates of whole organisms. Specimens were collected in the rivers Taro and Ticino, northern Italy, in stony bottom reaches in five and three stations respectively. The orders of aquatic Insects Diptera, Plecoptera, Odonata, Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera, the Crustacea Amphipoda, and Annelida Oligochaeta were examined. Additional enzymes, such as NADP-dependent malate dehydrogenase, isocitric dehydrogenase, glucose-6phosphate dehydrogenase, alcohol dehydrogenase, and lactate dehydrogenase were considered in the study. Results emphasize significant differences among taxa concerning the specific activity of most enzymes.
