Este artículo analiza la pervivencia del imaginario orientalista en la literatura popular británica de la segunda mitad del siglo XX ambientada en España. Me centraré en dos novelas donde los ...elementos orientalistas proyectan la imagen de España como un país exótico, a la vez que menos evolucionado y anclado en el pasado. Además de ello, las autoras emplean la retórica del orientalismo para criticar el carácter prepotente y autoritario de los hombres españoles, herencia, según leemos, de la sangre mora que aún corre por sus venas. Estudiaré cómo este orientalismo feminista se impregna también de prejuicios esencialistas acerca del Otro.
Esta investigación tiene como objetivo analizar el vestuario femenino en las películas españolas realizadas entre 1939 y 1952. Se parte de la premisa de que el Régimen utilizó las pantallas de cine ...como una escuela de comportamiento. Un modo aparentemente inocuo de adoctrinar a la población en los principios imperantes en una sociedad dividida y recién salida de una Guerra Civil. Las películas se convirtieron en los planteamientos visuales de lo aceptado y aceptable en cuestiones como el amor, el sexo, las relaciones de género o la forma de vestir. Controlado por la censura, el cine contribuyó a instaurar un código de vestimenta femenino que, además de fijar parámetros estéticos, definía categorías morales. Estableció los límites del pudor, pero también, potenció a partir del desarrollo de las tramas y de la repetición de personajes estereotipados, un sistema que señalara los itinerarios socialmente correctos e incorrectos, las claves del éxito y del fracaso.
Persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) production is facing important problems related to climate change in the Mediterranean areas. One of them is soil salinization caused by the decrease and change of ...the rainfall distribution. In this context, there is a need to develop cultivars adapted to the increasingly challenging soil conditions. In this study, a backcross between (D. kaki x D. virginiana) x D. kaki was conducted, to unravel the mechanism involved in salinity tolerance of persimmon. The backcross involved the two species most used as rootstock for persimmon production. Both species are clearly distinct in their level of tolerance to salinity. Variables related to growth, leaf gas exchange, leaf water relations and content of nutrients were significantly affected by saline stress in the backcross population. Water flow regulation appears as a mechanism of salt tolerance in persimmon via differences in water potential and transpiration rate, which reduces ion entrance in the plant. Genetic expression of eight putative orthologous genes involved in different mechanisms leading to salt tolerance was analyzed. Differences in expression levels among populations under saline or control treatment were found. The 'High affinity potassium transporter' (HKT1-like) reduced its expression levels in the roots in all studied populations. Results obtained allowed selection of tolerant rootstocks genotypes and describe the hypothesis about the mechanisms involved in salt tolerance in persimmon that will be useful for breeding salinity tolerant rootstocks.

MBW protein complexes containing MYB, bHLH and WD40 repeat factors are known transcriptional regulators of secondary metabolites production such as proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins, and ...developmental processes such as trichome formation in many plant species. DkMYB2 and DkMYB4 (MYB-type), DkMYC1 (bHLH-type) and DkWDR1 (WD40-type) factors have been proposed by different authors to take part of persimmon MBW complexes for proanthocyanidin accumulation in immature fruit, leading to its characteristic astringent flavour with important agronomical and ecological effects. We have confirmed the nuclear localization of these proteins and their mutual physical interaction by bimolecular fluorescence complementation analysis. In addition, transient expression of DkMYB2, DkMYB4 and DkMYC1 cooperatively increase the expression of a persimmon anthocyanidin reductase gene (ANR), involved in the biosynthesis of cis-flavan-3-ols, the structural units of proanthocyanidin compounds. Collectively, these data support the presence of MBW complexes in persimmon fruit and suggest their coordinated participation in ANR regulation for proanthocyanidin production.
There is evidence of cognitive impairment in patients with end-stage renal disease in hemodialysis (ESRD-HD). However, few studies have exhaustively analyzed executive functions (EFs) in this ...population, especially considering the influence of a wide range of clinical variables. This study analyzes performance in different EF components in ESRD-HD patients compared to a group of healthy controls (HCs), in addition to the acute effects of HD and the associations of cognitive performance with clinical variables.
EFs were evaluated pre- and post-HD in 43 ESRD-HD patients and 42 HCs, using a battery of tests designed to assess EF domains. Age, schooling, mood and blood pressure were statistically controlled. Associations between performance and clinical factors were computed by correlations and hierarchical multiple regression analyses.
The performance of the ESRD-HD patients was significantly lower than that of HCs in all the EF domains except for planning. Group differences were marginally significant for reasoning. HD produced no acute changes in global performance, with improvements see only in inhibition and working memory. EF scores were positively associated with total number of months previously transplanted, body mass index (BMI), dry weight, and levels of hemoglobin, albumin, ferritin, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, urea, and creatinine.
Global EF functioning was lower in ESRD-HD patients than in HCs. No major acute HD-related EF changes were detected. These findings underline the importance of an adequate nutritional status for maintaining executive functioning in ESRD-HD patients.

Large carnivores are often persecuted due to conflict with human activities, making their conservation in human-modified landscapes very challenging. Conflict-related scenarios are increasing ...worldwide, due to the expansion of human activities or to the recovery of carnivore populations. In general, brown bears Ursus arctos avoid humans and their settlements, but they may use some areas close to people or human infrastructures. Bear damages in human-modified landscapes may be related to the availability of food resources of human origin, such as beehives. However, the association of damage events with factors that may predispose bears to cause damages has rarely been investigated. We investigated bear damages to apiaries in the Cantabrian Mountains (Spain), an area with relatively high density of bears. We included spatial, temporal and environmental factors and damage prevention measures in our analyses, as factors that may influence the occurrence and intensity of damages. In 2006-2008, we located 61 apiaries, which included 435 beehives damaged in the study area (346 km2). The probability of an apiary being attacked was positively related to both the intensity of the damage suffered the year before and the distance to the nearest damaged apiary, and negatively related to the number of prevention measures employed as well as the intensity of the damage suffered by the nearest damage apiary. The intensity of damage to apiaries was positively related to the size of the apiary and to vegetation cover in the surroundings, and negatively related to the number of human settlements. Minimizing the occurrence of bear damages to apiaries seems feasible by applying and maintaining proper prevention measures, especially before an attack occurs and selecting appropriate locations for beehives (e.g. away from forest areas). This applies to areas currently occupied by bears, and to neighbouring areas where dispersing individuals may expand their range.

Abstract
Objective
The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility, safety, adherence, and preliminary efficacy of the ATOPE program during radiotherapy (RT) or chemotherapy (CT) for women ...with breast cancer.
Methods
This single-blind, pretest–posttest feasibility study included 38 women with breast cancer at the beginning of their treatment. The ATOPE program consisted of 12 to 18 sessions of a multimodal physical exercise program, prescribed based on daily heart rate variability and clinimetric assessments using the ATOPE+ mHealth system. Overall health was assessed with quality of life, autonomous balance, and body composition, whereas health-related fitness was measured through functional capacity, physical activity levels, and upper and lower limb strength.
Results
The rates of recruitment, retention, and adherence were 52.35, 73.68, and 84.37%, respectively, and the satisfaction rating was 9.2 out of a possible 10 points. The perceived health status change score was 3.83 points, scored on a −5 to 5 point scale. No adverse effects were found. Compliance results showed that the ATOPE+ mHealth system was used on 73.38% of the days, and the Fitbit bracelet (Google, Mountain View, CA, USA) was used on 84.91% of the days. Women stayed physically active 55% of days. Regarding preliminary results, for overall health, the percentage of body fat in the RT group decreased by 1.93%, whereas it increased by 5.03% in the CT group. Lower limb strength increased in the RT group, specifically knee extensor isometric strength (6.07%), isokinetic knee flexors 180 degree/second (1.53%), and isokinetic knee extensors 300 degree/second (4.53%), in contrast with the reductions found in the CT group (11.07, 18.67, and 14.89%, respectively).
Conclusion
The ATOPE program, through nonlinear prescription based on daily monitoring with the ATOPE+ mHealth system, is feasible and safe for application during breast cancer treatment. The results suggest that the overall health can be maintained or even improved regarding most variables.
Impact
This study focused on the feasibility, safety, and completion of a physical therapist-led program at early diagnosis for adults with breast cancer. The multimodal, supervised, tailored, nonlinear physical exercise program is feasible and safe, showed a good completion rate, and was able to prevent the quality-of-life deficits that are often triggered by systemic breast cancer treatment. This study highlights the importance of daily morning assessments using the ATOPE+ mHealth system in patients with breast cancer to prescribe nonlinear physical exercise.
Cold spells and heatwaves increase mortality. However little is known about the effect of heatwaves or cold spells on cardiovascular morbidity. This study aims to assess the effect of cold spells and ...heatwaves on cardiovascular diseases in a Mediterranean region (Catalonia, Southern Europe).
We conducted a population-based retrospective study. Data were obtained from the System for the Development of Research in Primary Care and from the Catalan Meteorological Service. The outcome was first emergency hospitalizations due to coronary heart disease, stroke, or heart failure. Exposures were: cold spells; cold spells and 3 or 7 subsequent days; and heatwaves. Incidence rate ratios (IRR) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using the self-controlled case series method. We accounted for age, time trends, and air pollutants; results were shown by age groups, gender or cardiovascular event type.
There were 22,611 cardiovascular hospitalizations in winter and 17,017 in summer between 2006 and 2013. The overall incidence of cardiovascular hospitalizations significantly increased during cold spells (IRR = 1.120; CI 95%: 1.10-1.30) and the effect was even stronger in the 7 days subsequent to the cold spell (IRR = 1.29; CI 95%: 1.22-1.36). Conversely, cardiovascular hospitalizations did not increase during heatwaves, neither in the overall nor in the stratified analysis.
Cold spells but not heatwaves, increased the incidence of emergency cardiovascular hospitalizations in Catalonia. The effect of cold spells was greater when including the 7 subsequent days. Such knowledge might be useful to develop strategies to reduce the impact of extreme temperature episodes on human health.

The target species (Aphia minuta and Pseudaphya ferreri) of the transparent goby fishery on Mallorca Island (Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean) are currently discarded when the maximum daily ...catch is exceeded or when the sorting process is unworkable. The mortality suffered by this discarded fraction remains unknown, although it may be important for resource management. Accordingly, the aims of this study were to (1) assess the environmental drivers of the relative post-release survival of the discarded target species and (2) test the correlations between post-release survival and two behavior-related variables (swimming speed and its increase after a stimulus, assessed via video recording). To do so, mortality of the target species from 47 hauls sampled under normal fishing boat operations was monitored when the gear was onboard and after a few hours. At the reference level (an average depth of 25.7 m and temperature of 15.7 ºC), the immediate survival was 99.9% (95% CI: 97.9 to 100%), but the estimated post-release survival decreased to 47.2% (33.8 to 65.8%). Relative post-release mortality doubled when the water temperature increased by 2.8 ºC or when the fishing depth increased up to 32 m. Furthermore, the swimming speed of the target species was significantly correlated with the estimated post-release survival; thus, this vitality metric may offer a promising strategy for more easily estimating post-release mortality in other fisheries.
