Climate and regional land-use and landcover change (LUCC) impact the ecosystem of the Upper Rhine Area (URA) and transform large parts of the landscape into strongly irrigated agricultural cropland. ...The increase of long-term drought periods and the trend towards low summer precipitation totals trigger an increase in groundwater scarcity and amplify the negative effects of extensive irrigation purposes and freshwater consumption in a hydrologically sensitive region in Central Europe. This article presents qualitative transnational open source remote sensing temporal series of vegetation indices (NDVI) and groundwater level development to tracing near real-time vegetation change and socio-ecological feedbacks during periods of climate extremes in the Upper Rhine Area (2018–2020). Increased freshwater consumption caused a dramatic drop in groundwater availability, which eventually led to a strong degradation of the vegetation canopy and caused governmental regulations in July 2020. Assessing vegetation growth behavior and linking groundwater reactions in the URA through open source satellite data contributes to a rapidly accessible understanding of the ecosystem’s feedbacks on the local to the transnational scale and further enables risk management and eco-political regulations in current and future decision-making processes.

As the negative consequences of climate change are being felt more widely, research and practice have increasingly focused on the municipal scale to better understand and address the climate adaptation gap. The literature recognizes that adaptation is supported by the provision of climate services, the lack of which can negatively affect climate literacy and constrain adaptation planning and implementation. However, the efficacy of climate services is rarely evaluated, especially in relation to the needs of practitioners. Using the example of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, we survey municipal adaptation and show that it is unevenly implemented and often underdeveloped. We also introduce municipal climate profiles as a user-oriented climate service and evaluate their added value from a practitioner's perspective. Our results indicate that they help improve climate literacy, as they can serve as a catalyst for local dialogues, promoting discussions about perceived impacts and anticipated adaptation requirements. However, our findings also imply, that improving climate literacy alone may not be sufficient to bridge the adaptation gap. Clear guidelines on adaptation practices, along with funding schemes for personnel and measures, are also crucial to overcome structural barriers that hinder adaptation.
The given article focuses on the benefit of harvested Ambient Geographic Information (AGI) as complementary data sources for severe weather events and provides methodical approaches for the ...spatio-temporal analysis of such data. The perceptions and awareness of Twitter users posting about severe weather patterns were explored as there were aspects not documented by official damage reports or derived from official weather data. We analysed Tweets regarding the severe storm event Friederike to map their spatio-temporal patterns. More than 50% of the retrieved >23.000 tweets were geocoded by applying supervised information retrievals, text mining, and geospatial analysis methods. Complementary, central topics were clustered and linked to official weather data for cross-evaluation. The data confirmed (1) a scale-dependent relationship between the wind speed and the societal echo. In addition, the study proved that (2) reporting activity is moderated by population distribution. An in-depth analysis of the crowds’ central topic clusters in response to the storm Friederike (3) revealed a plausible sequence of dominant communication contents during the severe weather event. In particular, the merge of the studied AGI and other environmental datasets at different spatio-temporal scales shows how such user-generated content can be a useful complementary data source to study severe weather events and the ensuing societal echo.
Climate vulnerability assessments are an important prerequisite for establishing successful climate adaptation strategies. Despite a growing number of assessments on the national or global scale, ...there is still a need for regionalized studies with a high resolution to identify meso-scale vulnerability patterns. In this paper, we present an indicator-based assessment that was carried out in the Trinational Metropolitan Region Upper Rhine within the Interreg-V project Clim’Ability. The analyzed region is characterized by strong cross-border and transnational linkages, similar ecological features and climatic stressors but differing political, administrative, cultural and legal conditions. In this rather complex setting, we operationalized a state-of-the art vulnerability framework using 18 quantified indicators and aggregating them into a vulnerability index. We show that it is possible to downscale the methods used in recent assessments to a regional context with a challenging data situation and discuss strengths and uncertainties. The results are mapped for stakeholder communication purposes. They provide an evidence-base to the identification of the trinational vulnerability pattern and may enable stakeholders and decision-makers to enhance their own climate adaptation planning.
Citizen-led local participation is considered the key to a successful energy transition, and citizens’ co-owned power plants are an alternative and representative form of local participation. The ...extent to which citizens’ co-owned power plants can embody “locality, democracy, participation, energy autonomy, poverty reduction, and energy justice” has led to many controversial discussions. In response to these meaningful questions, this study argues for the focus to return to the impetus and driving forces of local participation in energy. This study proposes six possibilities for the impetus of local energy participation and the types of participation they may create. In the case analysis of the Higashi-Ohmi Model, in addition to the compound disaster of the 11 March 2011 earthquake and the transformation of the Japanese power grid, the driving factors depend on the self-consciousness of local promoters who insist on independence from policy influence. By linking local networks to discuss “local needs,” the residents form an integrated plan of “agricultural self-sufficiency, care system, and energy autonomy.” They promote the overall economic cycle of the region with energy regional energy currency, which inspired other rural forms of citizen energy participation. In addition, the simultaneous development of small-scale local enterprises and the ability of the local government to adjust policies centered on the needs of residents are important conditions for implementing the Higashi-Ohmi model.
Monthly temperature series for Central Europe back to AD 1500 are developed from documentary index series from Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic (1500–1854) and 11 instrumental temperature ...records (1760–2007). Documentary evidence from the Low Countries, the Carpathian Basin and Poland are used for cross-checking for earlier centuries. The instrumental station records are corrected for inhomogeneities, including insufficient radiation protection of early thermometers and the urban heat island effect. For overlapping period (1760–1854), the documentary data series correlate with instrumental temperatures, most strongly in winter (86% explained variance in January) and least in autumn (56% in September). For annual average temperatures, 81% of the variance is explained. Verification statistics indicate high reconstruction skill for most months and seasons. The last 20 years (since 1988) stand out as very likely the warmest 20-year period, accounting for the calibration uncertainty and decreases in proxy data quality before the calibration period. The new reconstruction displays a previously unobserved long-term decrease in DJF, MAM and JJA temperature variability over last five centuries. Compiled monthly, seasonal and annual series can be used to improve the robustness of gridded large-scale European temperature reconstructions and possible impact studies. Further improvement of the reconstruction would be achieved if documentary data from other European countries are further developed.
Opisthorchis viverrini is a food-borne trematode species that might give rise to biliary diseases and the fatal cholangiocarcinoma. In Lao PDR, an estimated 2.5 million individuals are infected with ...O. viverrini, but epidemiological studies are scarce and the spatial distribution of infection remains to be determined. Our aim was to map the distribution of O. viverrini in southern Lao PDR, identify underlying risk factors, and predict the prevalence of O. viverrini at non-surveyed locations.
A cross-sectional parasitological and questionnaire survey was carried out in 51 villages in Champasack province in the first half of 2007. Data on demography, socioeconomic status, water supply, sanitation, and behavior were combined with remotely sensed environmental data and fed into a geographical information system. Bayesian geostatistical models were employed to identify risk factors and to investigate the spatial pattern of O. viverrini infection. Bayesian kriging was utilized to predict infection risk at non-surveyed locations.
The prevalence of O. viverrini among 3,371 study participants with complete data records was 61.1%. Geostatistical models identified age, Lao Loum ethnic group, educational attainment, occupation (i.e., rice farmer, fisherman, and animal breeder), and unsafe drinking water source as risk factors for infection. History of praziquantel treatment, access to sanitation, and distance to freshwater bodies were found to be protective factors. Spatial patterns of O. viverrini were mainly governed by environmental factors with predictive modeling identifying two different risk profiles: low risk of O. viverrini in the mountains and high risk in the Mekong corridor.
We present the first risk map of O. viverrini infection in Champasack province, which is important for spatial targeting of control efforts. Infection with O. viverrini appears to be strongly associated with exposure to the second intermediate host fish, human behavior and culture, whereas high transmission is sustained by the lack of sanitation.

Abstract
Extreme weather events and severe flash floods during July 2021 caused numerous deaths and massive ecological disasters across Europe. The regionally overstrained environmental and ...socio-cultural resilience triggered an intensive discussion about cause and effect, responsibilities and public denouncement, and the financial consequences of climate-induced extreme events. In this article we analyze the flood event by four methodological approaches: (1) hermeneutics, with an analog interpretation of printed newspapers and sources; (2) text mining and natural language processing of digital newspaper articles available online; (3) precipitation and discharge models based on instrumental data; and (4) how the findings can be linked to the historical extreme floods of 1804 and 1910, based on documentary source analysis. These four approaches are used to compare and evaluate their consistency by tracking the course, consequences, and aftermaths of the flood disaster. The study shows a high consistency between the analog, digital, and instrumental data analysis. A combination of multidisciplinary methods and their application to historical events enables the evaluation of modern events. It enables to answer the question of return periods and intensities, which are indispensable for today’s risk assessments and their social contextualization, a desideratum in historical and modern climatology.
Droughts are multidimensional hazards that can lead to substantial environmental and societal impacts. To understand causes and impacts, multiple perspectives need to be considered. Many studies have ...identified past drought events and investigated drought propagation from meteorological droughts via soil moisture to hydrological droughts, and some studies have included the impacts of these different types of drought. However, it is not certain whether the increased frequency and severity of drought events in the past decade is unprecedented in recent history. Therefore, we analyze different droughts and their impacts in a regional context using a multidisciplinary approach. We compile a comprehensive and long-term dataset to investigate possible temporal patterns in drought occurrence and place recent drought events into a historical context. We assembled a dataset of drought indices and recorded impacts over the last 218 years in southwestern Germany. Meteorological and river-flow indices were used to assess the natural drought dynamics. In addition, tree-ring data and recorded impacts were utilized to investigate drought events from an ecological and social perspective. Since 1801, 20 extreme droughts have been identified as common extreme events when applying the different indices. All events were associated with societal impacts. Our multi-dataset approach provides insights into similarities but also the unique aspects of different drought indices.
