, TOI-269 b has one of the highest eccentricities of the exoplanets with periods less than 10 days. The star being likely a few Gyr old, this system does not appear to be dynamically young. We surmise TOI-269 b may have acquired its high eccentricity as it migrated inward through planet-planet interactions.
Hypokalemia is a relatively common electrolyte disorder usually resulting from gastrointestinal wasting. Transient hyperkalemia in those treated for hypokalemia has been previously described to occur ...in 16% of hospitalized patients. The majority of those patients had acute, hospital-acquired hypokalemia. Here, we report a case of a young man with alcohol use disorder and chronic hypokalemia who was hospitalized for muscle weakness, abdominal pain, and intractable emesis. His potassium was 2.5 mEq/L on the day of admission. Four days later, with a creatinine at baseline (0.9 mg/dL), potassium abruptly increased to 6.7 mEq/L. He did not have evidence of hyperaldosteronism. In cases of chronic hypokalemia, we propose that the adaptive mechanisms of the distal tubule with total body potassium deficits require time to revert back to a nonactive state and that transient hyperkalemia may be observed during these “refractory” periods during which potassium supplementation is continued. The time required for disassembly of with no lysine kinases following resolution of hypokalemia is unknown. Hyperkalemia is an important consideration when treating patients with chronic hypokalemia.

isolates or stools from patients with
C. difficile
antibiotic-associated diarrhea were collected and referred to a central laboratory. After species confirmation of 300 isolates at the central laboratory, antibiotic susceptibilities were determined by the agar dilution method M11-A9, Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) against the 10 agents. Ribotyping was performed by PCR capillary gel electrophoresis on all isolates. Ridinilazole had a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) 90 of 0.25 mcg/mL, and no isolate had an MIC greater than 0.5 mcg/mL. In comparison, fidaxomicin had an MIC 90 of 0.5 mcg/mL. The vancomycin MIC 90 was 2 mcg/mL with a 0.7% resistance rate both CLSI and European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) criteria. The metronidazole MIC 90 was 1 mcg/mL, with none resistant by CLSI criteria, and a 0.3% resistance rate by EUCAST criteria. Among the 50 different ribotypes isolated in the survey, the most common ribotype was 014–020 (14.0%) followed by 106 (10.3%), 027 (10%), 002 (8%), and 078–126 (4.3%). Ridinilazole maintained activity against all ribotypes and all strains resistant to any other agent tested. Ridinilazole showed excellent
in vitro
activity against
C. difficile
isolates collected between 2020 and 2021 in the United States, independent of ribotype.
Context. The study of high-contrast imaged brown dwarfs and exoplanets depends strongly on evolutionary models. To estimate the mass of a directly imaged substellar object, its extracted photometry ...or spectrum is used and adjusted with model spectra together with the estimated age of the system. These models still need to be properly tested and constrained. HD 4747B is a brown dwarf close to the H burning mass limit, orbiting a nearby (d = 19.25 ± 0.58 pc), solar-type star (G9V); it has been observed with the radial velocity method for over almost two decades. Its companion was also recently detected by direct imaging, allowing a complete study of this particular object. Aims. We aim to fully characterize HD 4747B by combining a well-constrained dynamical mass and a study of its observed spectral features in order to test evolutionary models for substellar objects and to characterize its atmosphere. Methods. We combined the radial velocity measurements of High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) and CORALIE taken over two decades and high-contrast imaging of several epochs from NACO, NIRC2, and SPHERE to obtain a dynamical mass. From the SPHERE data we obtained a low-resolution spectrum of the companion from Y to H band, and two narrow band-width photometric measurements in the K band. A study of the primary star also allowed us to constrain the age of the system and its distance. Results. Thanks to the new SPHERE epoch and NACO archival data combined with previous imaging data and high-precision radial velocity measurements, we were able to derive a well-constrained orbit. The high eccentricity (e = 0.7362 ± 0.0025) of HD 4747B is confirmed, and the inclination and the semi-major axis are derived (i = 47.3 ± 1.6°, a = 10.01 ± 0.21 au). We derive a dynamical mass of mB = 70.0 ± 1.6 MJup, which is higher than a previous study but in better agreement with the models. By comparing the object with known brown dwarfs spectra, we derive a spectral type of L9 and an effective temperature of 1350 ± 50 K. With a retrieval analysis we constrain the oxygen and carbon abundances and compare them with the values from the HR 8799 planets.
We report the discovery of a bright, brown dwarf companion to the star HIP 64892, imaged with VLT/SPHERE during the SHINE exoplanet survey. The host is a B9.5V member of the Lower-Centaurus-Crux ...subgroup of the Scorpius Centaurus OB association. The measured angular separation of the companion (1.2705 ± 0.0023”) corresponds to a projected distance of 159 ± 12 AU. We observed the target with the dual-band imaging and long-slit spectroscopy modes of the IRDIS imager to obtain its spectral energy distribution (SED) and astrometry. In addition, we reprocessed archival NACO L-band data, from which we also recover the companion. Its SED is consistent with a young (<30 Myr), low surface gravity object with a spectral type of M9γ ± 1. From comparison with the BT-Settl atmospheric models we estimate an effective temperature of Teff = 2600 ± 100 K, and comparison of the companion photometry to the COND evolutionary models yields a mass of ~29−37 MJ at the estimated age of 16−7+15 $16^{+15}_{-7}$16−7+15 Myr for the system. The star HIP 64892 is a rare example of an extreme-mass ratio system (q ~ 0.01) and will be useful for testing models relating to the formation and evolution of such low-mass objects.
Vacuolar H+-ATPases (V-ATPases) are a family of highly conserved proton pumps that couple hydrolysis of cytosolic ATP to proton transport out of the cytosol. How ATP is supplied for V-ATPase-mediated ...hydrolysis and for coupling of proton transport is poorly understood. We have reported that the glycolytic enzyme aldolase physically associates with V-ATPase (Lu, M., Holliday, L. S., Zhang, L., Dunn, W. A., and Gluck, S. L. (2001) J. Biol. Chem. 276, 30407–30413). Here we show that aldolase interacts with three different subunits of V-ATPase (subunits a, B, and E). The binding sites for the V-ATPase subunits on aldolase appear to be on distinct interfaces of the glycolytic enzyme. Aldolase deletion mutant cells were able to grow in medium buffered at pH 5.5 but not at pH 7.5, displaying a growth phenotype similar to that observed in V-ATPase subunit deletion mutants. Abnormalities in V-ATPase assembly and protein expression observed in aldolase deletion mutant cells could be fully rescued by aldolase complementation. The interaction between aldolase and V-ATPase increased dramatically in the presence of glucose, suggesting that aldolase may act as a glucose sensor for V-ATPase regulation. Taken together, these findings provide functional evidence that the ATP-generating glycolytic pathway is directly coupled to the ATP-hydrolyzing proton pump through physical interaction between aldolase and V-ATPase.
Context . Polarisation is a powerful remote-sensing tool to study the nature of particles scattering the starlight. It is widely used to characterise interplanetary dust particles in the Solar System ...and increasingly employed to investigate extrasolar dust in debris discs’ systems. Aims . We aim to measure the scattering properties of the dust from the debris ring around HD 181327 at near-infrared wavelengths. Methods . We obtained high-contrast polarimetric images of HD 181327 in the H band with the SPHERE/IRDIS instrument on the Very Large Telescope (ESO). We complemented them with archival data from HST/NICMOS in the F 110 W filter reprocessed in the context of the Archival Legacy Investigations of Circumstellar Environments (ALICE) project. We developed a combined forward-modelling framework to simultaneously retrieve the scattering phase function in polarisation and intensity. Results . We detected the debris disc around HD 181327 in polarised light and total intensity. We measured the scattering phase function and the degree of linear polarisation of the dust at 1.6 µm in the birth ring. The maximum polarisation is 23.6% ± 2.6% and occurs between a scattering angle of 70° and 82°. Conclusions . We show that compact spherical particles made of a highly refractive and relatively absorbing material in a differential power-law size distribution of exponent −3.5 can simultaneously reproduce the polarimetric and total intensity scattering properties of the dust. This type of material cannot be obtained with a mixture of silicates, amorphous carbon, water ice, and porosity, and requires a more refracting component such as iron-bearing minerals. We reveal a striking analogy between the near-infrared polarisation of comets and that of HD 181327. The methodology developed here combining VLT/SPHERE and HST/NICMOS may be applicable in the future to combine the polarimetric capabilities of SPHERE with the sensitivity of JWST.
The primary hyperoxalurias (PHs) are a group of diseases characterized by kidney stones, nephrocalcinosis, and chronic kidney disease. At stages of advanced kidney disease, glomerular filtration of ...oxalate becomes insufficient, plasma levels increase, and tissue deposition may occur. Hemodialysis is often unable to overcome the excess hepatic oxalate production. The current surgical management of primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1) is combined liver kidney transplantation. In a subset of PH1 patients who respond to pyridoxine, kidney-only transplantation has been successfully performed. Recently, kidney-only transplantation has also been performed in PH1 patients receiving a small interfering RNA therapy called lumasiran. This drug targets the hepatic overproduction of oxalate, making kidney-only transplantation a potentially practical novel approach for managing PH1 patients with advanced kidney disease. It is unknown if similar effects could be seen with a different small interfering RNA agent called nedosiran. This article will briefly review PH1, describe the small interfering RNA therapies being used to treat PH, summarize the reported cases of kidney-only transplantation performed with lumasiran, and detail a case of kidney-only transplantation performed in a PH1 patient receiving nedosiran.

Recent observations of resolved cold debris discs at tens of au have revealed that gaps could be a common feature in these Kuiper-belt analogues. Such gaps could be evidence for the presence ...of planets within the gaps or closer in near the edges of the disc. We present SPHERE observations of HD 92945 and HD 107146, two systems with detected gaps. We constrained the mass of possible companions responsible for the gap to 1–2 MJup for planets located inside the gap and to less than 5 MJup for separations down to 20 au from the host star. These limits allow us to exclude some of the possible configurations of the planetary systems proposed to explain the shape of the discs around these two stars. In order to put tighter limits on the mass at very short separations from the star, where direct-imaging data are less effective, we also combined our data with astrometric measurements from Hipparcos and Gaia and radial-velocity measurements. We were able to limit the separation and the mass of the companion potentially responsible for the proper-motion anomaly of HD 107146 to values of 2–7 au and 2–5 MJup, respectively.
Context. Polarimetric imaging is one of the most effective techniques for high-contrast imaging and for the characterization of protoplanetary disks, and it has the potential of becoming instrumental ...in the characterization of exoplanets. The Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) instrument installed on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) contains the InfraRed Dual-band Imager and Spectrograph (IRDIS) with a dual-beam polarimetric imaging (DPI) mode, which offers the capability of obtaining linear polarization images at high contrast and resolution. Aims. We aim to provide an overview of the polarimetric imaging mode of VLT/SPHERE/IRDIS and study its optical design to improve observing strategies and data reduction. Methods. For H-band observations of TW Hydrae, we compared two data reduction methods that correct for instrumental polarization effects in different ways: a minimization of the “noise” image (Uϕ), and a correction method based on a polarimetric model that we have developed, as presented in Paper II of this study. Results. We use observations of TW Hydrae to illustrate the data reduction. In the images of the protoplanetary disk around this star, we detect variability in the polarized intensity and angle of linear polarization that depend on the pointing-dependent instrument configuration. We explain these variations as instrumental polarization effects and correct for these effects using our model-based correction method. Conclusions. The polarimetric imaging mode of IRDIS has proven to be a very successful and productive high-contrast polarimetric imaging system. However, the instrument performance is strongly dependent on the specific instrument configuration. We suggest adjustments to future observing strategies to optimize polarimetric efficiency in field-tracking mode by avoiding unfavorable derotator angles. We recommend reducing on-sky data with the pipeline called IRDAP, which includes the model-based correction method (described in Paper II) to optimally account for the remaining telescope and instrumental polarization effects and to retrieve the true polarization state of the incident light.
