A highly granular electromagnetic calorimeter with scintillator strip readout is being developed for future linear collider experiments. A prototype of 21.5 X0 depth and 180×180mm2 transverse ...dimensions was constructed, consisting of 2160 individually read out 10×45×3mm3 scintillator strips. This prototype was tested using electrons of 2–32 GeV at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility in 2009. Deviations from linear energy response were less than 1.1%, and the intrinsic energy resolution was determined to be (12.5±0.1(stat.)±0.4(syst.))%∕EGeV⊕(1.2±0.1(stat.)−0.7+0.6(syst.))%, where the uncertainties correspond to statistical and systematic sources, respectively.
In special tests, the active layers of the CALICE Digital Hadron Calorimeter prototype, the DHCAL, were exposed to low energy particle beams, without being interleaved by absorber plates. The ...thickness of each layer corresponded approximately to 0.29 radiation lengths or 0.034 nuclear interaction lengths, defined mostly by the copper and steel skins of the detector cassettes. This paper reports on measurements performed with this device in the Fermilab test beam with positrons in the energy range of 1 to 10 GeV. The measurements are compared to simulations based on GEANT4 and a standalone program to emulate the detailed response of the active elements.
Panentheism is an often‐discussed alternative to Classical theism, and almost any discussion of panentheism starts by way of acknowledging Karl Christian Friedrich Krause (1781–1832) as the person ...who coined the term.1 However, apart from this tribute, Krause's own panentheism is almost completely unknown. In what follows, I first present a brief overview of Krause's life and correct some misconceptions of his work before I turn to the core ideas of Krause's own panentheistic system of philosophy. In brief, Krause elaborates a scientific holism that is anchored in intellectual intuition of the Absolute as the one principle of being and recognition. The task of philosophical speculation consequently is twofold: the analytic‐ascending part of philosophy proceeds by way of transcendental reflection and according to Krause enables us to obtain intellectual intuition. The synthetic‐descending part of philosophy starts by way of showing that science as a whole is an explication of the original union of the Absolute as apprehended in intellectual intuition. Once this is achieved, Krause argues that the emerging philosophy of science is most adequately referred to as “panentheism” since everything is what it is “in and through” the Absolute, while the Absolute itself is not reducible to anything in particular. I end by showing how to relate Krause's panentheism to recent philosophical discussion.

Im UKE wurde mit Bezug des Neubaus Anfang 2009 auch das Klinische Arbeitsplatzsystem Soarian der Fa. Siemens in Betrieb genommen. Damit ist eine flächendeckende Elektronische Patientenakte ...implementiert, die auch klinische Subsysteme wie Pathologie, Labor und Radiologie nahtlos integriert: sowohl die Anforderung von Leistungen, als auch die Befund- und Leistungsdatenübermittlung finden entsprechend elektronisch statt.
Im Workshop werden folgende Themen behandelt:

Lernziele:
Am Ende des Workshops kennen die Teilnehmer die Basisprinzipien einer modernen Klinik IT, insbesondere die Besonderheiten die sich bei der Integration von Klinischen Abteilungssystemen wie RIS/PACS ergeben. Damit sind sie in die Lage versetzt, die eigenen Abteilungen, Systeme und Prozessabläufe auf eine Implementation in eine Elektronische Patientenakte auszurichten.

The CALICE Semi-Digital Hadronic Calorimeter (SDHCAL) prototype, built in 2011, was exposed to beams of hadrons, electrons and muons in two short periods in 2012 on two different beam lines of the ...CERN SPS. The prototype with its 48 active layers, made of Glass Resistive Plate Chambers and their embedded readout electronics, was run in triggerless and power-pulsing mode. The performance of the SDHCAL during the test beam was found to be very satisfactory with an efficiency exceeding 90% for almost all of the 48 active layers. A linear response (within 5%) and a good energy resolution are obtained for a large range of hadronic energies (5-80GeV) by applying appropriate calibration coefficients to the collected data for both the Digital (Binary) and the Semi-Digital (Multi-threshold) modes of the SDHCAL prototype. The Semi-Digital mode shows better performance at energies exceeding 30GeV
Ziele:
Vor zwei Jahren (Januar 2002) wurde in unserer Abteilung ein PACS (Picture archiving and communication system) als Ergänzung zu unserem seit drei Jahren existierendem RIS (Radiology ...Information System) eingeführt. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die verschiedenen Wege der Einführung eines solchen Systems in einer großen Universitätsradiologie aufzuzeigen und die dabei entstehenden Schwierigkeiten und Probleme deutlich zu machen.
Methode:
Seit 1999 verwenden wir das RIS MEDORA der Firma Inomed (Deutschland). Im Dezember 2001 entschieden wir uns nach 6-monatiger Vorauswahl das PACS Centricity der Firma GE Medical Systems, USA, einzuführen. Unsere Radiologie führt ca. 150 000 Untersuchungen im Jahr für eine Klinik mit 1500 Betten durch. Alle Modalitäten kommunizieren per DICOM mit dem PACS über 100-Mbit optische Ethernet Verbindung. Wir produzieren ca. 5 Terabyte Bilddaten pro Jahr. Die Daten der ersten drei Monate werden Online in einem RAID-system (1,2 Terabyte) und drei Jahre Offline in Bandarchiv (18 Terabyte) aufbewahrt. Ältere Daten werden in einem Storage Center gespeichert. Die Bildanzeige aus dem Kurzeitarchiv (RAID) dauert weniger als 10 s, Bildanzeige aus dem Mittelfristarchiv (Band) 5–10 Minuten. Für diagnostische Zwecke verwenden wir in unserer Abteilung 25 Arbeitsplatzrechner, alle ausgestattet mit Nachverarbeitungsmöglichkeiten (MIP, MPR und volume rendering). Zur Bild- und Befunddarstellung außerhalb unserer Abteilung wird ausschließlich eine Webbasierte Lösung verwendet (Standardbrowser mit JAVA-Applet).
Ergebnis:
Die Einführung eines PACS in eine große radiologische Abteilung war erfolgreich. Kleinere Probleme konnten in den ersten 3 Monaten behoben werden und durch weitgehende Doppeltauslegung der wichtigsten Systemkomponenten konnte ein störungsfreier Betrieb zu 99,9% gewährleistet werden.
Schlussfolgerung:
Der Betrieb eines PACS in einer großen Universitätsradiologie hat sich als machbar erwiesen und wird inzwischen weitreichend akzeptiert.
Gas metal arc-directed energy deposition is a metal additive manufacturing technique that involves the melting of a filler wire under an electric arc resulting in a high rate of deposition of molten ...metal and fast building of large scale parts in a layer-by-layer manner. A novel attempt is presented here for real-time simultaneous monitoring of the arc current, voltage and power, and the nature of surface temperature field and filler wire deposition during the process. The recorded temperature fields are analysed to trace the layer-wise variation in melt pool dimensions and solidification cooling rates. Together these process signatures demonstrated a synchronised assessment and potential to support an integrated feedback control system for gas metal arc-directed energy deposition.
