Tested the hypothesis that forgetting could be found on 1 trial in the absence of interference if the conditions or response-produced feedback were sufficiently reduced. The task was the learning and ...recall of a linear movement. 5 conditions of feedback and 2 retention intervals (5 and 90 sec.) gave 10 conditions, each with 20 male undergraduates. Auditory, proprioceptive, and visual feedback were used either singly, altogether, or not at all. Retention loss was found over 90 sec., with the most loss occurring for the condition with the least feedback. Results are interpreted in terms of the trace decay theory of forgetting and J. Adams' closed-loop theory which emphasizes the role of feedback in learning and retention. (17 ref.)
A patient with congenital generalized lipodystrophy developed nephrotic syndrome with progressive renal glomerulosclerosis attributed to diabetic nephropathy. Renal transplantation was performed and ...the patient was discharged with normal renal function. Marked hyperlipidemia (17,500 mg/dl) persisted. One month later renal malfunction developed, and an open renal biopsy was performed when there was no response to antirejection therapy. Massive lipid deposition in renal tubular cells with tubular necrosis and hemorrhage was present but only minimal evidence of graft rejection. Rejection therapy was tapered and renal function stabilized. Death occurred 2 months later because of pulmonary sepsis. Patients with generalized lipodystrophy and severe hyperlipidemia may be at an unusually high risk for renal homograft destruction.
1-(2-Chloro-2-deoxy-beta-D-arabinofuranosyl)cytosine (16) and its alpha anomer (18) were synthesized by direct condensation of 3,5-di-O-acetyl-2-chloro-2-deoxy-alpha-D-arabinofuranosyl bromide with ...trimethylsilylated N-4-acetylcytosine in the absence of catalyst. A new and convenient method for the synthesis of 1,3,5-tri-O-acetyl-2-chloro-2-deoxy-alpha-D-arabinofuranose from methyl 3,5-di-O-benzyl-alpha,beta-D-ribofuranoside is described.
