ABSTRACT
In the upcoming decades, large facilities, such as the SKA, will provide resolved observations of the kinematics of millions of galaxies. In order to assist in the timely exploitation of ...these vast data sets, we explore the use of a self-supervised, physics-aware neural network capable of Bayesian kinematic modelling of galaxies. We demonstrate the network’s ability to model the kinematics of cold gas in galaxies with an emphasis on recovering physical parameters and accompanying modelling errors. The model is able to recover rotation curves, inclinations and disc scale lengths for both CO and H i data which match well with those found in the literature. The model is also able to provide modelling errors over learned parameters, thanks to the application of quasi-Bayesian Monte Carlo dropout. This work shows the promising use of machine learning, and in particular, self-supervised neural networks, in the context of kinematically modelling galaxies. This work represents the first steps in applying such models for kinematic fitting and we propose that variants of our model would seem especially suitable for enabling emission-line science from upcoming surveys with e.g. the SKA, allowing fast exploitation of these large data sets.
Abstract
Next generation interferometers, such as the Square Kilometre Array, are set to obtain vast quantities of information about the kinematics of cold gas in galaxies. Given the volume of data ...produced by such facilities astronomers will need fast, reliable, tools to informatively filter and classify incoming data in real time. In this paper, we use machine learning techniques with a hydrodynamical simulation training set to predict the kinematic behaviour of cold gas in galaxies and test these models on both simulated and real interferometric data. Using the power of a convolutional autoencoder we embed kinematic features, unattainable by the human eye or standard tools, into a three-dimensional space and discriminate between disturbed and regularly rotating cold gas structures. Our simple binary classifier predicts the circularity of noiseless, simulated, galaxies with a recall of $85\%$ and performs as expected on observational CO and HI velocity maps, with a heuristic accuracy of $95\%$. The model output exhibits predictable behaviour when varying the level of noise added to the input data and we are able to explain the roles of all dimensions of our mapped space. Our models also allow fast predictions of input galaxies’ position angles with a 1σ uncertainty range of ±17○ to ±23○ (for galaxies with inclinations of 82.5○ to 32.5○, respectively), which may be useful for initial parameterisation in kinematic modelling samplers. Machine learning models, such as the one outlined in this paper, may be adapted for SKA science usage in the near future.
Abstract
Long-period comet C/2018 F4 (PANSTARRS) was observed to show duplicity of its inner region in 2020 September, suggestive of a splitting event. We here present analyses of our observations of ...the comet taken from the LCO Outbursting Objects Key project and the University of Hawaii 2.2 m telescope after the discovery of the splitting. The two fragments Components A and B, estimated to be ∼60 m to 4 km in radius, remained highly similar to each other in terms of brightness, color, and dust morphology throughout our observing campaign from 2020 September to 2021 December. , and that Component B was subjected to a stronger nongravitational acceleration than Component A in both the radial and normal directions of the orbit. The obtained splitting time is broadly consistent with the result from the dust morphology analysis, which further suggested that the dominant dust grains were millimeter-sized and ejected at a speed of ∼2 m s
−1
. We postulate that the pre-split nucleus of the comet consisted of two lobes resembling that of 67P, or that the comet used to be a binary system like main-belt comet 288P. Regardless, we highlight the possibility of using observations of split comets as a feasible manner to study the bilobate shape or binarity fraction of cometary nuclei.
Abstract
This paper presents the results of a study on the influence of the degree of impregnation and activation temperature on the formation of the porous structure of activated carbons (ACs) ...obtained from Pine cones by the chemical activation process using potassium hydroxide as an activator. The advanced new numerical clustering based adsorption analysis (LBET) method, together with the implemented unique numerical procedure for the fast multivariant identification were applied to nitrogen and carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms determined for porous structure characterization of the ACs. Moreover, the Quenched Solid Density Functional Theory (QSDFT) method was chosen to determine pore size distributions. The results showed a significant influence of the primary structure of Pine cones on the formation of the porous structure of the developed ACs. Among others, it was evidenced by a very high degree of surface heterogeneity of all the obtained ACs, irrespective of the degree of impregnation with potassium hydroxide and the activation temperature. Moreover, the analysis of carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms showed, that the porous structure of the studied ACs samples contains micropores accessible only to carbon dioxide molecules. The results also showed a significant advantage of the LBET method over those conventionally used for porous structure analysis based on Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Dubinin–Raduskevich (DR) equations, because it takes into account surface heterogeneities. The novel analyses methods were more fully validated as a reliable characterization tool, by extending their application to the isotherms for ACs developed from the same precursor by phosphoric acid activation, and for samples arising from these ACs, further subjected to additional post-treatments. The effect of the raw material used as precursor was moreover analysed by comparison with previous reported results for other ACs. The complementarity of the results obtained with the LBET and QSDFT methods is also noteworthy, resulting in a more complete and reliable picture of the analyzed porous structures.

We ...present results from 12 Earth-based facilities involved in a world-wide campaign to monitor the brightness and morphology of the ejecta in the first 35 days after impact. After an initial brightening of ∼1.4 mag, we find consistent dimming rates of 0.11–0.12 mag day

in the first week, and 0.08–0.09 mag day
−1
over the entire study period. The system returned to its pre-impact brightness 24.3–25.3 days after impact though the primary ejecta tail remained. The dimming paused briefly eight days after impact, near in time to the appearance of the second tail. This was likely due to a secondary release of material after re-impact of a boulder released in the initial impact, though movement of the primary ejecta through the aperture likely played a role.
Una desventaja del uso de biodiésel es su precio, debido a los altos costos de la materia prima y al acondicionamiento del aceite requerido para obtenerlo por medio de una transesterificación ...tradicional, lo que le impide alcanzar precios más accesibles y dificulta su competitividad con el diésel de petróleo. Por esta razón, se investigó una alternativa para la obtención de biodiésel mediante transesterificación in situ o extracción reactiva (ER) a partir de semillas de Jatropha curcas L. Con esta alternativa en auge, que no compite con el mercado alimenticio, se busca reducir etapas en el proceso de producción y así disminuir costos de operación respecto al método y aceites convencionales. Se determinó la influencia de la temperatura, concentración másica de catalizador (g NaOH/g aceite) y relación molar metanol:aceite, con el fin de maximizar el rendimiento y la concentración de FAME del biodiésel obtenido, mediante un diseño experimental central compuesto (DCC) con método de superficie de respuesta. Se encontró que las condiciones más apropiadas para la obtención de biodiésel por transesterificación in situ fueron una temperatura de reacción de 44 °C, con una concentración másica de catalizador respecto al aceite de 1,2 g NaOH/100 g aceite y una relación molar metanol:aceite de 135:1, con presencia de hexano, manteniendo constantes la velocidad de agitación (635 rpm) y el tiempo de reacción (3 h). En estas condiciones, se alcanza un rendimiento de 71,99 % p/p (g biodiésel/g aceite) y un contenido de FAME del 90,36 % p/p (g FAME/g biodiésel). Los resultados de este estudio establecen las bases para una alternativa al proceso tradicional que no necesita las etapas de extracción y pretratamiento de los aceites utilizados como materia prima, además de disminuir los lavados necesarios en el proceso convencional, que incrementan los costos de dicho proceso industrial e impactan en el medioambiente.

Abstract The world’s first planetary defense test mission was carried out in late 2022 by NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission. The main DART spacecraft, which was accompanied by ...the ASI-provided LICIACube cubesat, intentionally impacted Dimorphos, the smaller secondary of the near-Earth object binary system (65803) Didymos, on 2022 September 26. The impact released a large amount of ejecta, which, combined with the spacecraft’s momentum, produced the observed 33 ± 1 minute period change that was subsequently observed from ground-based telescopes. The DART mission, in addition to having successfully changed the orbital period of Dimorphos, also activated the asteroid as a result of the impact but under known conditions, unlike other impacts on asteroids. We have conducted long-term monitoring over 5 months following the impact with the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT) network and Magdalena Ridge Observatory (MRO). This was supplemented by almost 3 months of more sparsely sampled data, primarily from educational users of the LCOGT network during the period from 2022 July 5 to 2022 September 25, prior to the impact date of 2022 September 26. Here we report the observations of the Didymos system and DART impact ejecta with the telescopes of the LCOGT network from T+1.93 days to T+151.3 days after impact, and we study the evolving morphology of the ejecta cloud and evolving tail over the entire length of the data set. In addition, we combined these intensive data sets with the earlier sparse observations over the ∼90 days prior to impact to derive a new disk-integrated phase function model using the H , G 1 , G 2 parameterization.
Abstract NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission was the first to demonstrate asteroid deflection, and the mission's Level 1 requirements guided its planetary defense investigations. ...Here, we summarize DART's achievement of those requirements. On 2022 September 26, the DART spacecraft impacted Dimorphos, the secondary member of the Didymos near-Earth asteroid binary system, demonstrating an autonomously navigated kinetic impact into an asteroid with limited prior knowledge for planetary defense. Months of subsequent Earth-based observations showed that the binary orbital period was changed by –33.24 minutes, with two independent analysis methods each reporting a 1 σ uncertainty of 1.4 s. Dynamical models determined that the momentum enhancement factor, β , resulting from DART's kinetic impact test is between 2.4 and 4.9, depending on the mass of Dimorphos, which remains the largest source of uncertainty. Over five dozen telescopes across the globe and in space, along with the Light Italian CubeSat for Imaging of Asteroids, have contributed to DART's investigations. These combined investigations have addressed topics related to the ejecta, dynamics, impact event, and properties of both asteroids in the binary system. A year following DART's successful impact into Dimorphos, the mission has achieved its planetary defense requirements, although work to further understand DART's kinetic impact test and the Didymos system will continue. In particular, ESA's Hera mission is planned to perform extensive measurements in 2027 during its rendezvous with the Didymos–Dimorphos system, building on DART to advance our knowledge and continue the ongoing international collaboration for planetary defense.
Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum) leaves contain several bioactive compounds that can be extracted and used to develop new value-added products (e.g., functional foods and dietary supplements). In the ...current work, optimal ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) conditions to obtain extracts with high polyphenols content and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) scavenging activity were identified using response surface methodology. A complete 3k factorial design was used to evaluate the effect of different variables of the UAE (extraction temperature, time, and ethanol concentration) on the polyphenols content and the DPPH scavenging activity of the extracts. The best conditions for UAE to reach both the highest values of total polyphenols content (51.78 mg GAE/100 g) and DPPH scavenging activity (34.07 mg Trolox equivalents/100 g) were an extraction temperature of 60 °C, time of 10 min, and ethanol concentration of 70% v/v. The antioxidant activity of the extracts obtained at the optimal conditions was also evaluated by 2,2′-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays obtaining values of 155.51 ± 2.80 μM Trolox/100 g and 1300.21 ± 65.55 μM Trolox/100 g, respectively. Moreover, these extracts were characterized by UHPLC-ESI+-Orbitrap-MS analysis finding that cyanidin (6.0 mg/kg) was the phenolic compound found in the highest amount followed by quercetin-3-glucoside (4.4 mg/kg).
