The peopling of the Americas has been the subject of extensive genetic, archaeological and linguistic research; however, central questions remain unresolved. One contentious issue is whether the ...settlement occurred by means of a single migration or multiple streams of migration from Siberia. The pattern of dispersals within the Americas is also poorly understood. To address these questions at a higher resolution than was previously possible, we assembled data from 52 Native American and 17 Siberian groups genotyped at 364,470 single nucleotide polymorphisms. Here we show that Native Americans descend from at least three streams of Asian gene flow. Most descend entirely from a single ancestral population that we call 'First American'. However, speakers of Eskimo-Aleut languages from the Arctic inherit almost half their ancestry from a second stream of Asian gene flow, and the Na-Dene-speaking Chipewyan from Canada inherit roughly one-tenth of their ancestry from a third stream. We show that the initial peopling followed a southward expansion facilitated by the coast, with sequential population splits and little gene flow after divergence, especially in South America. A major exception is in Chibchan speakers on both sides of the Panama isthmus, who have ancestry from both North and South America.

We carried out multiwavelength (0.7-5 cm), multi-epoch (1994-2015) Very Large Array (VLA) observations toward the region enclosing the bright far-IR sources FIR 3 (HOPS 370) and FIR 4 (HOPS 108) in ...OMC-2. We report the detection of 10 radio sources, 7 of them identified as young stellar objects. We image a well-collimated radio jet with a thermal free-free core (VLA 11) associated with the Class I intermediate-mass protostar HOPS 370. The jet features several knots (VLA 12N, 12C, 12S) of non-thermal radio emission (likely synchrotron from shock-accelerated relativistic electrons) at distances of ∼7500-12,500 au from the protostar, in a region where other shock tracers have been previously identified. These knots are moving away from the HOPS 370 protostar at ∼100 km s−1. The Class 0 protostar HOPS 108, which itself is detected as an independent, kinematically decoupled radio source, falls in the path of these non-thermal radio knots. These results favor the previously proposed scenario in which the formation of HOPS 108 is triggered by the impact of the HOPS 370 outflow with a dense clump. However, HOPS 108 has a large proper motion velocity of ∼30 km s−1, similar to that of other runaway stars in Orion, whose origin would be puzzling within this scenario. Alternatively, an apparent proper motion could result because of changes in the position of the centroid of the source due to blending with nearby extended emission, variations in the source shape, and/or opacity effects.
Adolescent Binge Drinking (BD) has become an increasing health and social concern, with detrimental consequences for brain development and functional integrity. However, research on ...neurophysiological and neuropsychological traits predisposing to BD are limited at this time. In this work, we conducted a 2‐year longitudinal magnetoencephalography (MEG) study over a cohort of initially alcohol‐naïve adolescents with the purpose of exploring anomalies in resting‐state electrophysiological networks, impulsivity, sensation‐seeking, and dysexecutive behaviour able to predict future BD patterns. In a sample of 67 alcohol‐naïve adolescents (age = 14.5 ± 0.9), we measured resting‐state activity using MEG. Additionally, we evaluated their neuropsychological traits using self‐report ecological scales (BIS‐11, SSS‐V, BDEFS, BRIEF‐SR and DEX). In a second evaluation, 2 years later, we measured participant's alcohol consumption, sub‐dividing the original sample in two groups: future binge drinkers (22 individuals, age 14.6 ± 0.8; eight females) and future light/no drinkers (17 individuals, age 14.5 ± 0.8; eight females). Then, we searched for differences predating alcohol BD intake. We found abnormalities in MEG resting state, in a form of gamma band hyperconnectivity, in those adolescents who transitioned into BD years later. Furthermore, they showed higher impulsivity, dysexecutive behaviours and sensation seeking, positively correlated with functional connectivity (FC). Sensation seeking and impulsivity mainly predicted BD severity in the future, while the relationship between dysexecutive trait and FC with future BD was mediated by sensation seeking. These findings shed light to electrophysiological and neuropsychological traits of vulnerability towards alcohol consumption. We hypothesise that these differences may rely on divergent neurobiological development of inhibitory neurotransmission pathways and executive prefrontal circuits.
Longitudinal study using MEG characterises resting‐state functional connectivity and psychological features associated with the development of binge drinking in adolescents.

Mercury (Hg) in agricultural soils could have negative effects on the environment and the human health. The exposure to high level of Hg through different absorption pathways, such as ingestion and diet through soil-plant system could permanently damage developing foetus of animals and humans.
With the aim to assess the potential environmental and health risk and to study the behaviour and fate of Hg from agricultural soils to the environment, 47 soil samples were collected around a thermoelectric power plant in the Santa Catarina (Brazil). The Hg concentration measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) ranged from 0.16 to 0.56 mg kg−1. The distribution obtained by kriging interpolation allowed the identification of the main pollution sources. To see the morphology and composition of soil samples, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) were used combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), showing that the carbon nanotubes and magnetite as nanomineral contributed to Hg retention. The mentioned molecular characterization, and the low Contamination Factors (CF) values obtained, suggested that there is low risk to the food security of the agro-ecosystems area near to the CFPP in the terms of Hg inputs and contamination.
The infrared source known as Orion n was detected in 1980. About two decades later, sensitive observations made with the Very Large Array (VLA) revealed the presence of a spatially coincident ...millijansky double source that appeared to be its radio counterpart. However, over the years it has been concluded that the radio source shows large proper motions to the south while the infrared source n is stationary. Here we reanalyze the proper motions of the radio source adding both older and newer VLA observations than previously used. We confirm the proper motions of the double radio source that at present no longer coincides positionally with the infrared source. We propose that the infrared source is stationary while the radio source is moving as a result of the explosion that took place in this region some 500 yr ago. Considering the paper where it was first reported, we refer to this double radio source as Orion MR. Additionally, we use these new observations to fully confirm the large proper motions of the sources IRc23 and Zapata 11. Together with sources BN, I, Orion MR, and x, there are at least six compact sources that recede from a common point in Orion BN/KL. However, IRc23 is peculiar in that its ejection age appears to be only 300 yr. The relatively large number of sources rules out as a possible mechanism the classic three-body scenario since then only two escaping bodies are expected: a tight binary plus the third star involved in the encounter.
In this paper, we use a new database for Mexico to model the possible long-run effects of the pandemic on learning. First, based on the framework of Neidhöffer et al. (2021), we estimate the loss of ...schooling due to the transition from in-person to remote learning using data from the National Survey on Social Mobility (ESRU-EMOVI-2017), census data, and national statistics of COVID-19 incidence. In this estimation, we account for the attenuation capacity of households by econsidering the parental educational attainment and the economic resources available to the household in the calculation of the short-run cost. Secondly, we estimate the potential long-run consequences of this shock through a calibrated learning profile for five Mexican regions following Kaffenberger and Pritchett (2020a, 2020b). Assuming the distance learning policy adopted by the Mexican government is entirely effective, our results indicate that a learning loss equivalent to the learning during a third of a school year in the short run translates into a learning loss equivalent to an entire school year further up the educational career of students. On the other hand, if the policy was ineffective, the short-run loss increases to an entire school year and becomes a loss of two years of learning in the long run. Our results suggest substantial variation at the regional level, with the most affected region, the South experiencing a loss thrice as large as that of the least affected region, the Centre region.
•We integrate the Potential Pedagogical Function with recent modelling approaches of the costs of class disruptions.•We estimate COVID-19 produced a learning gap between a 0.3 and 1 school year with respect to intended learning in Mexico.•In the absence of attenuation measures, we estimate a long-run learning gap between 1.27-2.11 school years of learning.•In the south of the country, the short-run gap lies between 0.47 and 1.12 non-realised school years of learning.•For the long-run gap, we estimate a gap between 1.91-3.02 non-realised school years of learning in the south.
The utility of a continuous beam of He droplets for the assembly and surface deposition of Ag N clusters, ⟨N⟩ ∼ 300−6000, is studied with transmission electron microscopy. Images of the clusters on ...amorphous carbon substrates obtained at short deposition times have provided for a measure of the size distribution of the metal clusters. The average sizes of the deposited clusters are in good agreement with an energy balance based estimate of Ag N cluster growth in He droplets. Measurements of the deposition rate indicate that upon impact with the surface the He-embedded cluster is attached with high probability. The stability of the deposited clusters on the substrate is discussed.
ABSTRACT We report the discovery of a dwarf protoplanetary disk around the star XZ Tau B that shows all the features of a classical transitional disk but on a much smaller scale. The disk has been ...imaged with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), revealing that its dust emission has a quite small radius of ∼3.4 au and presents a central cavity of ∼1.3 au in radius that we attribute to clearing by a compact system of orbiting (proto)planets. Given the very small radii involved, evolution is expected to be much faster in this disk (observable changes in a few months) than in classical disks (observable changes requiring decades) and easy to monitor with observations in the near future. From our modeling we estimate that the mass of the disk is large enough to form a compact planetary system.
Objective Preeclampsia has been proposed to be an antiangiogenic state that may be detected by the determination of the concentrations of the soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 ...(sVEGFR-1) and placental growth factor (PlGF) in maternal blood even before the clinical development of the disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of the combined use of uterine artery Doppler velocimetry (UADV) and maternal plasma PlGF and sVEGFR-1 concentrations in the second trimester for the identification of patients at risk for severe and/or early onset preeclampsia. Study Design A prospective cohort study was designed to examine the relationship between abnormal UADV and plasma concentrations of PlGF and sVEGFR-1 in 3348 pregnant women. Plasma samples were obtained between 22 and 26 weeks of gestation at the time of ultrasound examination. Abnormal UADV was defined as the presence of bilateral uterine artery notches and/or a mean pulsatility index above the 95th percentile for the gestational age. Maternal plasma PlGF and sVEGFR-1 concentrations were determined with the use of sensitive and specific immunoassays. The primary outcome was the development of early onset preeclampsia (≤34 weeks of gestation) and/or severe preeclampsia. Secondary outcomes included preeclampsia, the delivery of a small for gestational age (SGA) neonate without preeclampsia, spontaneous preterm birth at ≤32 and ≤35 weeks of gestation, and a composite of severe neonatal morbidity. Contingency tables, chi-square test, receiver operating characteristic curve, and multivariate logistic regression were used for statistical analyses. A probability value of <.05 was considered significant. Results (1) The prevalence of preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia, and early onset preeclampsia were 3.4% (113/3296), 1.0% (33/3296), and 0.8% (25/3208), respectively. UADV was performed in 95.4% (3146/3296) and maternal plasma PlGF concentrations were determined in 93.5% (3081/3296) of the study population. (2) Abnormal UADV and a maternal plasma PlGF of <280 pg/mL were independent risk factors for the occurrence of preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia, early onset preeclampsia, and SGA without preeclampsia. (3) Among patients with abnormal UADV, maternal plasma PlGF concentration contributed significantly in the identification of patients destined to develop early onset preeclampsia (area under the curve, 0.80; P < .001) and severe preeclampsia (area under the curve, 0.77; P < .001). (4) In contrast, maternal plasma sVEGFR-1 concentration was of limited use in the prediction of early onset and/or severe preeclampsia. (5) The combination of abnormal UADV and maternal plasma PlGF of <280 pg/mL was associated with an odds ratio (OR) of 43.8 (95% CI, 18.48-103.89) for the development of early onset preeclampsia, an OR of 37.4 (95% CI, 17.64-79.07) for the development of severe preeclampsia, an OR of 8.6 (95% CI, 5.35-13.74) for the development of preeclampsia, and an OR of 2.7 (95% CI, 1.73-4.26) for the delivery of a SGA neonate in the absence of preeclampsia. Conclusion The combination of abnormal UADV and maternal plasma PlGF concentration of <280 pg/mL in the second trimester is associated with a high risk for preeclampsia and early onset and/or severe preeclampsia in a low-risk population. Among those with abnormal UADV, a maternal plasma concentration of PlGF of <280 pg/mL identifies most patients who will experience early onset and/or severe preeclampsia.
Senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles are prominent neuropathological hallmarks in Alzheimer's disease and are considered to be targets for therapeutic intervention as well as biomarkers for ...diagnostic in vivo imaging agents. While there are a number of amyloid-β positron emission tomography (PET) tracers currently in different stages of clinical development and commercialization, there have been very few reports on imaging agents selectively targeting tau aggregates. In search of 18F-PET tracers that possess great binding affinity and selectivity toward tau tangles, we tested more than 900 compounds utilizing a unique screening process. A competitive autoradiography assay was set up to test compounds for binding to native tau tangles and amyloid-β plaques on human brain tissue sections. In our in vitro assays, the 18F labeled compound 18F-T808 displayed a high level of binding affinity and good selectivity for tau aggregates over amyloid-β plaques. 18F-T808 showed rapid uptake and washout in rodent brains. Our in vitro and preclinical in vivo studies suggest that 18F-T808 possesses suitable properties and characteristics to be a specific and selective PET probe for imaging of paired helical filament tau in human brains.
