Elderly people who reside in long-term care facilities form a frail and vulnerable population, with multiple pathologies and high percentages of cognitive and functional disability.
The aims of this ...study were to assess the safety of vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in frail nursing home residents and to evaluate its effectiveness 6 months after full vaccination.
This was an ambispective observational study.
Residents of a long-term care facility in Madrid, Spain.
One hundred and thirty-seven nursing home residents (81.8% female, mean age 87.77 ± 8.31 years) with high comorbidity (61.3% Charlson Index ≥ 3) and frailty (75% Clinical Frail Scale ≥ 7) who received the BNT162B2 mRNA vaccine.
Safety data were collected to evaluate the type of adverse drug reactions and their duration, severity, and causality. Immunogenicity was tested 6 months after the primary vaccination and effectiveness was evaluated by the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the number of hospital admissions, and mortality due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Safety: Of the residents, 21.9% had some adverse reaction and 5.8% had a severe or more serious adverse reaction. The most frequent adverse reactions were fatigue (13.1%), pyrexia (12.4%), and headache (7.3%). No association was observed between frailty (including a need for palliative care) and clinical, functional or cognitive status of the participants and the occurrence of adverse events. Immunogenicity and Effectiveness: After 6 months of vaccination, only one case of SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed in the vaccinated residents. Most of the nursing home residents presented positive serology (95.2%). Loss of immunogenicity was associated with older age (95.12 ± 3.97 vs. 87.24 ± 8.25 years; p = 0.03) and no previous COVID-19 infection (16.6% vs. 70%; p < 0.001). Binary logistic regression models did not reveal this association.
The BNT162B2 vaccine is well tolerated and effective in nursing home residents, independently of their clinical, functional, cognitive, or frailty characteristics. For the most part, immunogenicity has been maintained over time, regardless of comorbidity, functional status or frailty.
Slugs are one of the most important pests of vegetable and fruit crops in Pamplona. The aims mas to evaluate the molluscicidal action of plant extracts from three species of Agavaceae as alternatives ...to control strawberry slug pests, in the municipality of Pamplona, Norte de Santander. A field experiment was developed in a Fragaria sp. in 2021 at the “Villa María” farm, Pamplona Norte De Santander (Colombia). Treatments with plant extracts of three Agavaceae plants were made in the form of juice t and in fractional form, compared with a control. Slug populations, technical efficiency and fruit damage were evaluated three, five and seven days after the treatments. The phytopesticide treatments based on Furcraea andina, both in the form of 20 % juice and in fractions of leaves at 4 kg/10 L of water, were statistically superior to the rest of the treatments in reducing slug populations and reduced damage. by slugs significantly in the fruits with the second application. The extracts of F. andina, were superior to those of the rest of the Agavaceae.
Introduction— Mollusks are important pests of agricultural crops, for which chemical molluscicides are used in many cases that pollute the environment and crops. Objective— To assess updated ...information on alternatives for the management of species of mollusk pests in agricultural crops in Colombia and in the world. Methodology— A descriptive documentary research was carried out where the units of analysis were the articles collected in a bibliographic search on information related to the pest mollusk species and alternative control methods during the period 2010 to 2021. Results— From the last decade articles were obtained on alternatives for the control of mollusk pests in all continents. From Colombia only 7 articles, of which 3 correspond to the use of diatomaceous earth, 3 to vegetable extracts and 1 to agroecological management, while, at the international level of the 54 articles located, 21 were related to vegetable extracts, 17 biological control, 6 with essential oils, 5 with barriers, 3 with agroecological management and 2 with biopesticides. Conclusions— Alternatives with the use of plant extracts predominated, followed by biological means such as insects, nematodes, microorganisms and others, natural products such as lime and diatomaceous earth, as well as different materials such as repellents or barriers, depending the type of recommended alternative, on the mollusk species and its size, the phytogenetic resources present and the reported bioregulators, which should be taken into account in Colombia.

The Colombian rural woman is an agent of transformation since family stability depends on her. However, her enormous contribution has gone unnoticed, as she takes on an excessive burden of unpaid and unrecognized care activities, she is generally subject to greater inequalities and violence, and she is less appreciated than men in society. This paper aims to exalt the importance of empowering rural women as managers in the reconstruction of the social fabric in the countryside. Through a qualitative study, with in-depth interviews with five women from Boyacá, Caldas and Cundinamarca about the dimensions of women empowerment, we observed that the participants had a high level of autonomy in the decisions made regarding agricultural production, land use, home economics, health, household nutrition, and participation in local development. Results show the managerial importance of rural women in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals during post-conflict times.

En este artículo se revisan los avances más recientes de la fisiopatología e inmunología, la relación con Propionibacterium acnes y las posibles implicaciones terapéuticas.
Based on the World Cancer Research Fund Global Cancer Update Programme, we performed systematic reviews and meta‐analyses to investigate the association of post‐diagnosis adiposity, physical ...activity, sedentary behaviour, and dietary factors with colorectal cancer prognosis. We searched PubMed and Embase until 28th February, 2022. An independent expert committee and expert panel graded the quality of evidence. A total of 167 unique publications were reviewed, and all but five were observational studies. The quality of the evidence was graded conservatively due to the high risk of several biases. There was evidence of non‐linearity in the associations between body mass index and colorectal cancer prognosis. The associations appeared reverse J‐shaped, and the quality of this evidence was graded as limited (likelihood of causality: limited‐no conclusion). The evidence on recreational physical activity and lower risk of all‐cause mortality (relative risk RR highest vs. lowest: 0.69, 95% confidence interval CI: 0.62–0.77) and recurrence/disease‐free survival (RR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.70–0.92) was graded as limited‐suggestive. There was limited‐suggestive evidence for the associations between healthy dietary and/or lifestyle patterns (including diets that comprised plant‐based foods), intake of whole grains and coffee with lower risk of all‐cause mortality, and between unhealthy dietary patterns and intake of sugary drinks with higher risk of all‐cause mortality. The evidence for other exposures on colorectal cancer outcomes was sparse and graded as limited‐no conclusion. Analyses were conducted excluding cancer patients with metastases without substantial changes in the findings. Well‐designed intervention and cohort studies are needed to support the development of lifestyle recommendations for colorectal cancer patients.
What's new?
A better understanding of the associations of post‐diagnosis modifiable lifestyle factors with outcomes could inform tailored prevention strategies for colorectal cancer survivors. The Global Cancer Update Programme (CUP Global) conducted systematic reviews, meta‐analyses, and independent quality of evidence grading on the associations of post‐diagnosis adiposity, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and dietary factors with colorectal cancer prognosis. Although “limited,” the evidence suggested that a physically active lifestyle, a healthy diet, and avoidance of sugary drinks or sedentary behaviour may be associated with longer overall survival. Well‐designed cohort and intervention studies are needed to further develop lifestyle recommendations for colorectal cancer survivors.
