The previously published atmospheric neutrino data did not distinguish whether muon neutrinos were oscillating into tau neutrinos or sterile neutrinos, as both hypotheses fit the data. Using data ...recorded in 1100 live days of the Super-Kamiokande detector, we use three complementary data samples to study the difference in zenith angle distribution due to neutral currents and matter effects. We find no evidence favoring sterile neutrinos, and reject the hypothesis at the 99% confidence level. On the other hand, we find that oscillation between muon and tau neutrinos suffices to explain all the results in hand.
The influence of MHC antigens on TCR gamma delta usage in CD8+ intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) was examined using a pan-reactive and V delta 4 region-specific MAb. While an average of 30% of IELs ...from the majority of mice of various MHC haplotypes were V delta 4+, a 2-fold or greater percentage of IELs from H-2k mice were V delta 4+. Analysis of IELs from F1 mice indicated that the increase in TCRs using V delta 4 was likely to be the result of positive selection. The V delta 4 usage patterns of IELs from recombinant inbred strains and from mice recombinant within H-2 revealed that the increase in V delta 4 usage mapped to H-2 and required I-E expression. Moreover, selection of TCRs using V delta 4 occurred in chimeric mice in the absence of a thymus. The results demonstrate an extrathymic selective mechanism for gamma delta TCRs of CD8+ IELs and suggest that these cells may exhibit MHC class II-restricted antigen recognition.
The experimental conditions required for discrimination of various types of tissue in fruits of cultivated strawberry (
Fragaria × Ananassa) at high fields (ca. 7 T) have been investigated. In marked ...contrast to soft fruits of other species, from which informative images have been derived at high fields using a variety of pulse sequences and acquisition parameters, appreciable image intensities from parenchymal and vascular tissues in healthy strawberry fruits were obtained only with a spin-echo imaging sequence using large sweep widths (ca. 100,000 Hz), and consequently small values for TE (<5 ms), indicating predominantly short
T
2 values for these tissues. Damage caused by infection by the fungal pathogen
Botrytis cinerea is readily seen as a result of a large increase in
T
2 in the infected tissue, whereas ripening processes appear to be characterized primarily by small variations in the
T

-weighted contrast and in the relative magnitudes of
T
1 between vascular and parenchymal tissue. In addition, it was possible selectively to enhance the contributions to images from the achenes (“seeds”) by using very short relaxation delays, thereby enhancing
T

-dominated contrast mechanisms.
Ventilatory effects of propofol, used as a sole agent for the induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia, were studied in 14 healthy unpremedicated patients. Subarachnoid anaesthesia was ...established before induction of general anaesthesia. Induction was with propofol 2.5 mg kg−1 given while the patients breathed 100% oxygen. We intended to start an infusion of propofol 100 μg kg−1 min−1; maintain it for at least 25 min; make a first set of quasi-steady-state observations; double the infusion; and repeat observations after 25 min. The single induction bolus plus single rate infusion was not totally satisfactory: further boluses were usually needed. At induction there was apnoea in all but three patients, sometimes lasting more than 3 min; hyperventilation before induction, combined with hyperoxia, probably exaggerated this. Established ventilatory rates were generally 30% higher than awake. One patient became brady-pnoeic. Tidal volume and minute ventilation, and the T/.T101 ratio, were reduced. Doubling the infusion rate had no clear effect on frequency or tidal volume, but it further reduced the T/.T101 ratio and caused an increase in PE′co2 of 1 kPa. The ventilatory response to carbon dioxide was 58% of baseline awake control (95% confidence limits ± 26%) at the lower infusion rate, with further slight depression when the infusion rate was doubled. Doubling the rate of infusion of propofol did not give twice the effect on ventilation, and probably is not giving twice the “depth ” of anaesthesia. We cannot say if this is for pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic reasons.
Though distantly related to any known allergenic tree nut, the potential allergenicity of RS was investigated by targeted serum screening with sera from almond- and walnut-allergic individuals, the ...two most commonly allergenic tree nuts in North America.
Fasciclin I is a membrane-associated glycoprotein that is regionally expressed on a subset of fasciculating axons during neuronal development in insects; it is expressed on apposing cell surfaces, ...suggesting a role in specific cell adhesion. In this paper we show that Drosophila fasciclin I is a novel homophilic cell adhesion molecule. When the nonadhesive Drosophila S2 cells are transfected with the fasciclin I cDNA, they form aggregates that are blocked by antisera against fasciclin I. When cells expressing fasciclin I are mixed with cells expressing fasciclin III, another Drosophila homophilic adhesion molecule, the mixture sorts into aggregates homogeneous for either fasciclin I- or fasciclin III-expressing cells. The ability of these two novel adhesion molecules to mediate cell sorting in vitro suggests that they might play a similar role during neuronal development.

Statement Validity Assessment (SVA) is a comprehensive credibility assessment system, with the Criterion-Based Content Analysis (CBCA) as a core component. Worldwide, the CBCA is reported to be the ...most widely used veracity assessment instrument. We tested and confirmed the hypothesis that CBCA scores are affected by event familiarity; descriptions of familiar events are more likely to be judged true than are descriptions of unfamiliar events. CBCA scores were applied to transcripts of 114 children who recalled a routine medical procedure (control) or a traumatic medical procedure that they had experienced one time (relatively unfamiliar) or multiple times (relatively familiar). CBCA scores were higher for children in the relatively familiar than the relatively unfamiliar condition, and CBCA scores were significantly correlated with age. Results raise serious questions regarding the forensic suitability of the CBCA for assessing the veracity of children's accounts.
Summary Background Abiraterone acetate improved overall survival in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer at a preplanned interim analysis of the COU-AA-301 double-blind, placebo-controlled ...phase 3 study. Here, we present the final analysis of the study before crossover from placebo to abiraterone acetate (after 775 of the prespecified 797 death events). Methods Between May 8, 2008, and July 28, 2009, this study enrolled 1195 patients at 147 sites in 13 countries. Patients were eligible if they had metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer progressing after docetaxel. Patients were stratified according to baseline Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, worst pain over the past 24 h on the Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form, number of previous chemotherapy regimens, and type of progression. Patients were randomly assigned (ratio 2:1) to receive either abiraterone acetate (1000 mg, once daily and orally) plus prednisone (5 mg, orally twice daily) or placebo plus prednisone with a permuted block method via an interactive web response system. The primary endpoint was overall survival, analysed in the intention-to-treat population. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov , number NCT00638690. Findings Of the 1195 eligible patients, 797 were randomly assigned to receive abiraterone acetate plus prednisone (abiraterone group) and 398 to receive placebo plus prednisone (placebo group). At median follow-up of 20·2 months (IQR 18·4–22·1), median overall survival for the abiraterone group was longer than in the placebo group (15·8 months 95% CI 14·8–17·0 vs 11·2 months 10·4–13·1; hazard ratio HR 0·74, 95% CI 0·64–0·86; p<0·0001). Median time to PSA progression (8·5 months, 95% CI 8·3–11·1, in the abiraterone group vs 6·6 months, 5·6–8·3, in the placebo group; HR 0·63, 0·52–0·78; p<0·0001), median radiologic progression-free survival (5·6 months, 5·6–6·5, vs 3·6 months, 2·9–5·5; HR 0·66, 0·58–0·76; p<0·0001), and proportion of patients who had a PSA response (235 29·5% of 797 patients vs 22 5·5% of 398; p<0·0001) were all improved in the abiraterone group compared with the placebo group. The most common grade 3–4 adverse events were fatigue (72 9% of 791 patients in the abiraterone group vs 41 10% of 394 in the placebo group), anaemia (62 8% vs 32 8%), back pain (56 7% vs 40 10%), and bone pain (51 6% vs 31 8%). Interpretation This final analysis confirms that abiraterone acetate significantly prolongs overall survival in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who have progressed after docetaxel treatment. No new safety signals were identified with increased follow-up. Funding Janssen Research & Development.
