John Bradby Blake (1745–1773) first visited Canton as a supercargo for the British East India Company in 1767/68. He returned as a resident supercargo in July 1769. Between then and his untimely ...death in 1773, in collaboration with one or more Chinese artists, he produced over 150 paintings of Chinese plants, many of which are illustrated in exquisite botanical detail. These paintings and the associated archives in the Oak Spring Garden Library at the Oak Spring Garden Foundation (OSGF) provide a detailed glimpse into an interesting life and a previously little known dimension of the social and scientific interactions between the British and Chinese in the late 18th century.
In the last quarter of the 18th century, Joseph Banks came into possession of a set of botanically accurate, western-influenced, drawings of Chinese plants, executed in Canton by a Chinese artist and ...supervised by John Bradby Blake, an East India Company supercargo. Banks realized that these drawings, now in the Natural History Museum, London, would help his collectors in Canton accurately identify the Chinese species he sought as living plants for the Royal Gardens at Kew. Banks commissioned a collector’s manual whose illustrations were based on the Blake drawings. In the early 19th century, William Kerr used this manual (now unfortunately lost) to continue the Blake practice – these drawings are at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. John Reeves, many of whose drawings are at the Royal Horticultural Society, used Kerr’s commissions to produce the next generation of botanical art in Canton.
Students with autism spectrum disorder often require social supports to function well in a mainstream class setting. Researchers have demonstrated the effects of social skills training for students ...with autism, but their work has focused primarily on topographically defined outcomes, such as increasing the frequency of social behaviours. More research is needed to address the functional impact of social skills training on social experiences, such as improvements in the quality of life for students with autism. This study examined the effects of a behavioural skills training form of social skills intervention on the social interactions of students with autism in an inclusive school setting. The intervention increased participants' social behaviour. However, its mixed results in the quality of peer responses may be a more meaningful indicator of its effect on the quality of social lives of the participants. The authors discuss the implications of these findings for current practice and future research.

The diffuse gamma radiation arising from the interaction of cosmic ray particles with matter and radiation in the Galaxy is one of the few probes available to study the origin of the cosmic rays. ...Milagro is a water Cherenkov detector that continuously views the entire overhead sky. The large field-of-view combined with the long observation time makes Milagro the most sensitive instrument available for the study of large, low surface brightness sources such as the diffuse gamma radiation arising from interactions of cosmic radiation with interstellar matter. In this paper we report our results on diffuse emission from the galactic plane and in particular the Cygnus region. Our observations show at least one new TeV source MGRO J2020+37 as well as correlations with the matter density in the region as would be expected from cosmic-ray proton interactions. However, the TeV gamma-ray flux from the Cygnus region (after excluding MGRO J2020+37) is roughly 5 times that expected from a conventional model of cosmic ray production and propagation.
The most common manifestation of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a slowly progressive myeloneuropathy, which leads to imbalance and gait disturbances. The variable progression of the disease ...complicates evaluation of its progression rate. Wearable sensors allow for easy and frequent balance and gait collection. This study reports baseline data from a longitudinal study on the quantitative assessment of balance and gait with wearable sensors and their clinical relevance.
Data were collected from adult patients in two institutions. Postural body sway and gait parameters were measured using accelerometers. Disease severity was measured by the Expanded Disability Severity Scale (EDSS). Falling frequency and quality of life (QOL) were collected in men. The relationship between sway and gait variables and EDSS score, participants' use of a walking aid, and falling frequency was evaluated.
One hundred twenty individuals with ALD were included. Sway variables significantly differentiate participants' assistive device use. Sway and gait variables were correlated to the EDSS in both sexes. Both gait speed and sway were correlated with falling frequency in men from one institution. Select QOL subscores were correlated with the EDSS in males from one institution. Accelerometry generated comparable results across sites.
This study confirms the clinical correlation between spinal cord disease and imbalance and gait in ALD. For the first time, this study shows clinically meaningful relationships for sway and gait with use of an assistive device, falling frequency and QOL. Wearable accelerometers are a valid means to measure sway and gait in ALD. These measures are promising outcomes for clinical trial designs to assess myeloneuropathy in ALD and to monitor disease progression in individuals.

Taxol is not only a profitable pharmaceutical commodity and a substance injected into women with breast and/or ovarian cancer; it is also a natural product found in the bark of Taxus brevifolia (the Pacific yew, which is native to the North American Pacific Northwest) and a chemical substance that was discovered and brought to the point of commercial production in the public sector. We explore its role in several controversies: the destruction of old-growth forests, public participation in policy making, and the privatization of intellectual property and its effect on the price of drugs.
Adult patients with adrenoleukodystrophy have a poor prognosis owing to development of adrenomyeloneuropathy. Additionally, a large proportion of patients with adrenomyeloneuropathy develop ...life-threatening progressive cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy. Leriglitazone is a novel selective peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma agonist that regulates expression of key genes that contribute to neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative processes implicated in adrenoleukodystrophy disease progression. We aimed to assess the effect of leriglitazone on clinical, imaging, and biochemical markers of disease progression in adults with adrenomyeloneuropathy.
ADVANCE was a 96-week, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2–3 trial done at ten hospitals in France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, and the USA. Ambulatory men aged 18–65 years with adrenomyeloneuropathy without gadolinium enhancing lesions suggestive of progressive cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy were randomly assigned (2:1 without stratification) to receive daily oral suspensions of leriglitazone (150 mg starting dose; between baseline and week 12, doses were increased or decreased to achieve plasma concentrations of 200 μg·h/mL SD 20%) or placebo by means of an interactive response system and a computer-generated sequence. Investigators and patients were masked to group assignment. The primary efficacy endpoint was change from baseline in the Six-Minute Walk Test distance at week 96, analysed in the full-analysis set by means of a mixed model for repeated measures with restricted maximum likelihood and baseline value as a covariate. Adverse events were also assessed in the full-analysis set. This study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03231878; the primary study is complete; patients had the option to continue treatment in an open-label extension, which is ongoing.
Between Dec 8, 2017, and Oct 16, 2018, of 136 patients screened, 116 were randomly assigned; 62 81% of 77 patients receiving leriglitazone and 34 87% of 39 receiving placebo completed treatment. There was no between-group difference in the primary endpoint (mean SD change from baseline leriglitazone: –27·7 41·4 m; placebo: –30·3 60·5 m; least-squares mean difference –1·2 m; 95% CI –22·6 to 20·2; p=0·91). The most common treatment emergent adverse events in both the leriglitazone and placebo groups were weight gain (54 70% of 77 vs nine 23% of 39 patients, respectively) and peripheral oedema (49 64% of 77 vs seven 18% of 39). There were no deaths. Serious treatment-emergent adverse events occurred in 14 (18%) of 77 patients receiving leriglitazone and ten (26%) of 39 patients receiving placebo. The most common serious treatment emergent adverse event, clinically progressive cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy, occurred in six 5% of 116 patients, all of whom were in the placebo group.
The primary endpoint was not met, but leriglitazone was generally well tolerated and rates of adverse events were in line with the expected safety profile for this drug class. The finding that cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy, a life-threatening event for patients with adrenomyeloneuropathy, occurred only in patients in the placebo group supports further investigation of whether leriglitazone might slow the progression of cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy.

Paraprofessionals (i.e., paid school employees working under the supervision of licensed and certified personnel) are being given expanded roles and responsibilities in schools. Unfortunately, many ...paraprofessionals in the United States are not well trained and are asked to take on responsibilities they have not been prepared for. One of those responsibilities is managing student behavior. The purpose of this study was to evaluate paraprofessionals' self-reported behavior management practices. Using a survey, we collected information concerning paraprofessionals' feelings of confidence in managing problem behavior, techniques to manage problem behavior, feelings concerning their behavior management training, and their views on certain problem behaviors. A total of 191 paraprofessionals completed some or all of the survey. The participants reported high levels of confidence in managing problem behaviors as well as high training needs. Findings suggest that paraprofessionals encounter low-intensity behaviors (i.e., off-task, passive noncompliance, and disruptive) more frequently and high-intensity behaviors (i.e., verbal and physical aggression) less frequently. Low-intensity behaviors also tend to be less difficult to manage and less problematic in the classroom, whereas the high-intensity behaviors were rated more difficult to manage and more problematic. Paraprofessionals' preferred behavior management strategy for the majority of behaviors encountered was reported to be verbal reprimand. Additional research and training regarding effective behavior management practices for paraprofessionals is supported by the results of this study.
