This book accompanies another book by the same authors, Introduction to the Theory of the Early Universe: Hot Big Bang Theory and presents the theory of the evolution of density perturbations and ...relic gravity waves, theory of cosmological inflation and post-inflationary reheating. Written in a pedagogical style, the main chapters give a detailed account of the established theory, with derivation of formulas. Being self-contained, it is a useful textbook for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students. Essential materials from General Relativity, theory of Gaussian random fields and quantum field theory are collected in the appendices. The more advanced topics are approached similarly in a pedagogical way. These parts may serve as a detailed introduction to current research.
The Baksan Experiment on Sterile Transitions (BEST) was designed to investigate the deficit of electron neutrinos νe observed in previous gallium-based radiochemical measurements with high-intensity ...neutrino sources, commonly referred to as the "gallium anomaly," which could be interpreted as evidence for oscillations between νe and sterile neutrino (νs) states. A 3.414-MCi 51Cr νe source was placed at the center of two nested Ga volumes and measurements were made of the production of 71Ge through the charged current reaction, 71Ga(νe,e-)71Ge, at two average distances. The measured production rates for the inner and the outer targets, respectively, are 54.9$_{-2.4}^{+2.5}$(stat)±1.4(syst) and 55.6$_{-2.6}^{+2.7}$(stat)±1.4(syst) atoms of 71Ge/d. The ratio (R) of the measured rate of 71Ge production at each distance to the expected rate from the known cross section and experimental efficiencies are Rin=0.79±0.05 and Rout=0.77±0.05. The ratio of the outer to the inner result is 0.97±0.07, which is consistent with unity within uncertainty. The rates at each distance were found to be similar, but 20%-24% lower than expected, thus reaffirming the anomaly. Therefore these results are consistent with νe→νs oscillations with a relatively large Δm2 (> 0.5 eV2) and mixing sin22θ (≈0.4).
This book is written from the viewpoint of a deep connection between cosmology and particle physics. It presents the results and ideas on both the homogeneous and isotropic Universe at the hot stage ...of its evolution and in later stages. The main chapters describe in a systematic and pedagogical way established facts and concepts on the early and the present Universe. The comprehensive treatment, hence, serves as a modern introduction to this rapidly developing field of science. To help in reading the chapters without having to constantly consult other texts, essential materials from General Relativity and the theory of elementary particles are collected in the appendices. Various hypotheses dealing with unsolved problems of cosmology, and often alternative to each other, are discussed at a more advanced level. These concern dark matter, dark energy, matter-antimatter asymmetry, etc.
Following the discovery of the gravitational-wave source GW170817 by three Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO)/Virgo antennae (Abbott et al., 2017a), the MASTER Global Robotic ...Net telescopes obtained the first image of the NGC 4993 host galaxy. An optical transient, MASTER OTJ130948.10-232253.3/SSS17a was later found, which appears to be a kilonova resulting from the merger of two neutron stars (NSs). Here we describe this independent detection and photometry of the kilonova made in white light, and in B, V, and R filters. We note that the luminosity of this kilonova in NGC 4993 is very close to those measured for other kilonovae possibly associated with gamma-ray burst (GRB) 130603 and GRB 080503.
The pathogenesis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection involves dysregulations of iron metabolism, and although the mechanism of this pathology is not yet fully ...understood, correction of iron metabolism pathways seems a promising pharmacological target. The previously observed effect of inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 infection by ferristatin II, an inducer of transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) degradation, prompted the study of competition between Spike protein and TfR1 ligands, especially lactoferrin (Lf) and transferrin (Tf). We hypothesized molecular mimicry of Spike protein as cross-reactivity of Spike-specific antibodies with Tf and Lf. Thus, strong positive correlations (R

> 0.95) were found between the level of Spike-specific IgG antibodies present in serum samples of COVID-19-recovered and Sputnik V-vaccinated individuals and their Tf-binding activity assayed with peroxidase-labeled anti-Tf. In addition, we observed cross-reactivity of Lf-specific murine monoclonal antibody (mAb) towards the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein. On the other hand, the interaction of mAbs produced to the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the Spike protein with recombinant RBD protein was disrupted by Tf, Lf, soluble TfR1, anti-TfR1 aptamer, as well as by peptides RGD and GHAIYPRH. Furthermore, direct interaction of RBD protein with Lf, but not Tf, was observed, with affinity of binding estimated by K
D
to be 23 nM and 16 nM for apo-Lf and holo-Lf, respectively. Treatment of Vero E6 cells with apo-Lf and holo-Lf (1–4 mg/mL) significantly inhibited SARS-CoV-2 replication of both Wuhan and Delta lineages. Protective effects of Lf on different arms of SARS-CoV-2-induced pathogenesis and possible consequences of cross-reactivity of Spike-specific antibodies are discussed.
Using a simple lattice gas model we study the features of self-assembly in adsorption layers where both "molecule-surface" and "molecule-molecule" interactions are anisotropic. Based on the example ...of adsorption layers of mono-functional organic molecules on the heterogeneous surface with strip-like topography, we have revealed plenty of possible self-assembled structures in this simple system, such as discrete, linear, zigzag, chess board-like, two-dimensional porous and close-packed patterns. However, the phase behavior of the adsorption layer is much richer, if the interactions between functional and non-functional parts of adjacent adsorbed molecules have comparable strength and opposite signs. It is demonstrated that filling of the strips composed of relatively "strong" adsorption sites with the increase of chemical potential can be non-monotonic. This effect is associated with surface anisotropy and results from the changing of the driving force of the self-assembly process - interactions between the adsorbed molecule and the surface dominate at low surface coverages, but intermolecular forces prevail at higher ones. Additionally, when the width of the strip composed of "strong" adsorption sites is two or more times greater than that of the adsorbed molecule, a local assembly of the ordered phases on the "strong" adsorption sites is observed. Our results suggest strategies for controlling the self-assembly in experiments involving mono-functional organic molecules on a strip-like heterogeneous surface.
Myeloperoxidase (MPO), an oxidant-producing enzyme of neutrophils, has been shown to prime platelet activity promoting immunothrombosis. Native MPO is a homodimer, consisting of two identical ...protomers (monomer) connected by a single disulfide bond. But in inflammatory foci, MPO can be found both in the form of a monomer and in the form of a dimer. Beside MPO can also be in complexes with other molecules and be modified by oxidants, which ultimately affect its physicochemical properties and functions. Here we compared the effects of various forms of MPO as well as MPO in complex with ceruloplasmin (CP), a physiological inhibitor of MPO, on the platelet activity. Monomeric MPO (hemi-MPO) was obtained by treating the dimeric MPO by reductive alkylation. MPO was modified with HOCl in a molar ratio of 1:100 (MPO-HOCl). Using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy we showed that peaks at about 510 and 526 cm−1 corresponded to disulfide bond was recognizable in the SERS-spectra of dimeric MPO, absent in the spectrum of hemi-MPO and less intense in the spectra of MPO-HOCl, which indicates the partial decomposition of dimeric MPO with a disulfide bond cleavage under the HOCl modification. It was shown hemi-MPO to a lesser extent than dimeric MPO bound to platelets and enhanced their agonist-induced aggregation and platelet-neutrophil aggregate formation. MPO modified by HOCl and MPO in complex with CP did not bind to platelets and have no effect on platelet activity. Thus, the modification of MPO by HOCl, its presence in monomeric form as well as in complex with CP reduces MPO effect on platelet function and consequently decreases the risk of thrombosis in inflammatory foci.
A review of experimental studies of the properties of a recently discovered new coherent collective state, a magnetoexciton condensate, is presented. Condensation occurs at temperatures below 1 K in ...a Fermi system, a quantum Hall insulator (a filling factor of ν = 2), as a result of the formation of a dense ensemble of long-lived triplet spin cyclotron magnetoexcitons—composite bosons. The condensed phase interacts coherently with an external electromagnetic field and demonstrates the ability of fast nondiffusive propagation over macroscopic distances and high spatial coherence.
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a unique heme-containing peroxidase that can catalyze the formation of hypochlorous acid (HOCl). The strong interaction of MPO with low-density lipoproteins (LDL) promotes ...proatherogenic modification of LDL by HOCl. The MPO-modified LDL (Mox-LDL) accumulate in macrophages, resulting in the formation of foam cells, which is the pathognomonic symptom of atherosclerosis. A promising approach to prophylaxis and atherosclerosis therapy is searching for remedies that prevent the modification or accumulation of LDL in macrophages. Lactoferrin (LF) has several application points in obesity pathogenesis. We aimed to study LF binding to Mox-LDL and their accumulation in monocytes transformed into macrophages. Using surface plasmon resonance and ELISA techniques, we observed no LF interaction with intact LDL, whereas Mox-LDL strongly interacted with LF. The affinity of Mox-LDL to LF increased with the degree of oxidative modification of LDL. Moreover, an excess of MPO did not prevent interaction of Mox-LDL with LF. LF inhibits accumulation of cholesterol in macrophages exposed to Mox-LDL. The results obtained reinforce the notion of LF potency as a remedy against atherosclerosis.

Coherent condensate states of particles obeying either Bose or Fermi statistics are in the focus of interest in modern physics. Here we report on condensation of collective excitations with Bose ...statistics, cyclotron magnetoexcitons, in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system in a magnetic field. At low temperatures, the dense non-equilibrium ensemble of long-lived triplet magnetoexcitons exhibits both a drastic reduction in the viscosity and a steep enhancement in the response to the external electromagnetic field. The observed effects are related to formation of a super-absorbing state interacting coherently with the electromagnetic field. Simultaneously, the electrons below the Fermi level form a super-emitting state. The effects are explicable from the viewpoint of a coherent condensate phase in a non-equilibrium system of two-dimensional fermions with a fully quantized energy spectrum. The condensation occurs in the space of vectors of magnetic translations, a property providing a completely new landscape for future physical investigations.
