+jet production at NLO QCD+EW, we obtain predictions that are NLO accurate for observables with both zero or one resolved jet. This approach permits also to capture higher-order effects associated with the interplay of EW corrections and QCD radiation. The behavior of EW corrections is studied for various kinematic distributions, relevant for experimental analyses of Higgsstrahlung processes at the 13 TeV LHC. Exact NLO EW corrections are complemented with approximate analytic formulae that account for the leading and next-to-leading Sudakov logarithms in the high-energy regime. In the tails of transverse-momentum distributions, relevant for analyses in the boosted Higgs regime, the Sudakov approximation works well, and NLO EW effects can largely exceed the ten percent level. Our predictions are based on the POWHEG BOX RES+OpenLoops framework in combination with the Pythia 8.1 parton shower.
MR imaging tractography is increasingly used to perform noninvasive presurgical planning for brain gliomas. Recently, constrained spherical deconvolution tractography was shown to overcome several ...limitations of commonly used DTI tractography. The purpose of our study was to evaluate WM tract alterations of both the corticospinal tract and arcuate fasciculus in patients with high-grade gliomas, through qualitative and quantitative analysis of probabilistic constrained spherical deconvolution tractography, to perform reliable presurgical planning.
Twenty patients with frontoparietal high-grade gliomas were recruited and evaluated by using a 3T MR imaging scanner with both morphologic and diffusion sequences (60 diffusion directions). We performed probabilistic constrained spherical deconvolution tractography and tract quantification following diffusion tensor parameters: fractional anisotropy; mean diffusivity; linear, planar, and spherical coefficients.
In all patients, we obtained tractographic reconstructions of the medial and lateral portions of the corticospinal tract and arcuate fasciculus, both on the glioma-affected and nonaffected sides of the brain. The affected lateral corticospinal tract and the arcuate fasciculus showed decreased fractional anisotropy (z = 2.51, n = 20, P = .006; z = 2.52, n = 20, P = .006) and linear coefficient (z = 2.51, n = 20, P = .006; z = 2.52, n = 20, P = .006) along with increased spherical coefficient (z = -2.51, n = 20, P = .006; z = -2.52, n = 20, P = .006). Mean diffusivity values were increased only in the lateral corticospinal tract (z = -2.53, n = 20, P = .006).
In this study, we demonstrated that probabilistic constrained spherical deconvolution can provide essential qualitative and quantitative information in presurgical planning, which was not otherwise achievable with DTI. These findings can have important implications for the surgical approach and postoperative outcome in patients with glioma.
Platelet-derived factors are biomaterials that might accelerate healing process in oral, maxillofacial, and several other applications. Release of specific factors by platelet concentrates is ...critical to achieving a successful outcome. Here, we have shown that platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) clots were beneficial sources of leukocytes, which may directly affect the release of chemokines and growth factors. When compared with the standard leukocyte-PRF (L-PRF), the experimental low-force modified procedure defined as advanced-PRF (A-PRF) entrapped the same content of viable leukocytes, released a similar amount of inflammatory cytokines, but secreted 3-, 1.6-, 3-, and 1.2-fold higher levels of Eotaxin, CCL5, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), respectively. A leukocyte-free scaffold, such as plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF), released only platelet-specific factors and, in particular, the F3 fraction, the richest in growth factors, secreted higher amount of CCL5 and PDGF compared to F1 and F2 fractions. In conclusion, different procedures and leukocyte content affect cytokine, chemokines, and growth factor release from platelet derivatives, which may be helpful in different clinical settings.

The most dangerous and life-threatening manifestation of allergic diseases is anaphylaxis, a condition in which the cardiovascular system is responsible for the majority of clinical symptoms and for ...potentially fatal outcome. The heart is both a source and a target of chemical mediators released during allergic reactions. Mast cells are abundant in the human heart, where they are located predominantly around the adventitia of large coronary arteries and in close contact with the small intramural vessels. Cardiac mast cells can be activated by a variety of stimuli including allergens, complement factors, general anesthetics and muscle relaxants. Mediators released from immunologically activated human heart mast cells strongly influence ventricular function, cardiac rhythm and coronary artery tone. Histamine, cysteinyl leukotrienes and platelet-activating factor (PAF) exert negative inotropic effects and induce myocardial depression that contribute significantly to the pathogenesis of anaphylactic shock. Moreover, cardiac mast cells release chymase and renin that activates the angiotensin system locally, which further induces arteriolar vasoconstriction. The number and density of cardiac mast cells is increased in patients with ischaemic heart disease and dilated cardiomyopathies. This observation may help explain why these conditions are major risk factors for fatal anaphylaxis. A better understanding of the mechanisms involved in cardiac mast cell activation may lead to an improvement in prevention and treatment of systemic anaphylaxis.

Neovascularization plays a ...prominent role in inflammation and tissue remodeling in several chronic inflammatory disorders. Vessel number and size, vascular surface area and vascular leakage are all increased in biopsies from patients with asthma. High levels of VEGF and other angiogenic factors have been detected in tissues and biological samples of patients with asthma and correlate with disease activity and inversely with airway hyper-responsiveness. Inflammation in the lung stimulates the growth of new blood vessels and these contribute to the airway obstruction or airway hyper-responsiveness, or both. Effector cells of inflammation (human lung mast cells, basophils, eosinophils, macrophages, etc.) are major sources of a vast array of angiogenic and lymphangiogenic factors. Inhaled corticosteroids reduce vascularity and growth factor expression and might modulate bronchial vascular remodeling in asthma. Specific antagonists to VEGF and other angiogenic factors and their receptors might help to control chronic airway inflammation and vascular remodeling and offer a novel approach for the treatment of chronic inflammatory lung disorders.
A 3D volumetric technique for measuring the evolution over time of the kinematic and geometric characteristics of the bubble population in multiphase flows at moderate void fraction is here proposed. ...The method is based on a shadowgraphy approach and requires a set of calibrated and synchronized cameras, each placed in front of a bright screen. Synchronized, 2D images of the bubbly flow are analyzed to extract the outline of the bubbles as seen from every camera. Then, each bubble is separately identified as a 3D volume described by the intersection of the cones having vertices on the optical center of each camera and passing through the contour of the bubble. Details about the implementation of the procedure, including the further refinements of the first rough bubble identification and the optimization of the number and geometric arrangement of the points of view, are reported against the results obtained on a reference set of spheres of known dimensions. Application on isolated bubbles demonstrates the ability of the procedure to extract quantitative and self-consistent information over time. These results are consolidated by a hint at a plunging jet test case with a significant void fraction, showing potential for application to situations of practical interest.
Background and purpose
Late‐onset Pompe disease (LOPD) is a rare, multisystem disorder that is well established to mainly impair skeletal muscle function. Systematic studies exploring brain functions ...in LOPD are lacking. The aim of this study was to detect morphological and functional brain alterations as well as neuropsychological impairment in LOPD.
Methods
We studied 21 patients (10 male, mean age 49 ± 18.4 years) with defined diagnosis of LOPD, divided into two groups: one with pre‐symptomatic hyperCKemia with no muscle weakness and the second with limb‐girdle muscle weakness. All patients underwent 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to obtain morphological/angiographic evaluation as well as normalized cortical brain volume and resting‐state functional MRI. Fazekas score was applied to quantify white matter lesions, whereas Smoker's criteria were used to examine dolichoectasia. A complete neuropsychological assessment was performed.
Results
The MRI data showed that 12/21 patients (57%) demonstrated signs of cerebral vasculopathy, with a Fazekas score >2 in 67%. According to Smoker's criteria, 11/21 patients (52%) had a dolichoectasia of the vertebrobasilar system; an intracranial aneurysm was detected in 3/21 patients (14%). Resting‐state functional MRI demonstrated significantly decreased brain connectivity in the salience network with a more relevant reduction in the bilateral middle and superior frontal gyrus. Gray matter atrophy correlated with age and disease duration. A mild impairment in executive functions was also identified.
Conclusions
In this LOPD cohort the results showed morphological and functional brain alterations with mild neuropsychological dysfunction, mainly in the limb‐girdle muscle weakness group. Cerebrovascular alterations seemed to be not related to common risk factors, suggesting a major role of enzymatic deficiency in the pathogenesis of brain abnormalities.
In aggressive pituitary tumors (PT) showing local invasion or growth/recurrence despite multimodal conventional treatment, temozolomide (TMZ) is considered a further therapeutic option, while little ...data are available on peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT). We analyzed PRRT effectiveness, safety and long-term outcome in three patients with aggressive PT, also reviewing the current literature. Patient #1 (F, giant prolactinoma) received five cycles (total dose 37 GBq) of 111In-DTPA-octreotide over 23 months, after unsuccessful surgery and long-term dopamine-agonist treatment. Patient #2 (M, giant prolactinoma) underwent two cycles (12.6 GBq) of 177Lu-DOTATOC after multiple surgeries, radiosurgery and TMZ. In patient #3 (F, non-functioning PT), five cycles (29.8 GBq) of 177Lu-DOTATOC followed five surgeries, radiotherapy and TMZ. Eleven more cases of PRRT-treated aggressive PT emerged from literature. Patient #1 showed tumor shrinkage and visual/neurological amelioration over 8-year follow-up, while the other PTs continued to grow causing blindness and neuro-cognitive disorders (patient #2) or monolateral amaurosis (patient #3). No adverse effects were reported. Including the patients from literature, 4/13 presented tumor shrinkage and clinical/biochemical improvement after PRRT. Response did not correlate with patients’ gender or age, neither with used radionuclide/peptide, but PRRT failure was significantly associated with previous TMZ treatment. Overall, adverse effects occurred only in two patients. PRRT was successful in 1/3 of patients with aggressive PT, and in 4/5 of those not previously treated with TMZ, representing a safe option after unsuccessful multimodal treatment. However, at present, considering the few data, PRRT should be considered only in an experimental setting.
Autistic people may have difficulties in finding and keeping a job. Studies highlight that only 34% of autistic people are employed compared to 54% of people with disability. 58% of people with ASD ...have never had a job. Social cognition and cognitive strains may also have a significant impact on working life. The primary goal of our project is supporting autistic people through a training program focused on neuropsychological and social skills training to improve participant’ job skills. Through an Individual Placement and Support model the project involved various Partners to guide, identify skills and interests, provide cognitive and psychological support for autistic people. Results highlighted neuropsychological training efficacy, especially in inhibitory control and good rate of employment status at the end of the project. Findings are encouraging and underline the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to support autistic people in their work life considering their expectations, needs and inclinations.
Inherited ataxias are a group of heterogeneous disorders in children or adults but their genetic definition remains still undetermined in almost half of the patients. However, CoQ10 deficiency is a ...rare cause of cerebellar ataxia and ADCK3 is the most frequent gene associated with this defect. We herein report a 48 year old man, who presented with dysarthria and walking difficulties. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed a marked cerebellar atrophy. Serum lactate was elevated. Tissues obtained by muscle and skin biopsies were studied for biochemical and genetic characterization. Skeletal muscle biochemistry revealed decreased activities of complexes I+III and II+III and a severe reduction of CoQ10, while skin fibroblasts showed normal CoQ10 levels. A mild loss of maximal respiration capacity was also found by high‐resolution respirometry. Molecular studies identified a novel homozygous deletion (c.504del_CT) in ADCK3, causing a premature stop codon. Western blot analysis revealed marked reduction of ADCK3 protein levels. Treatment with CoQ10 was started and, after 1 year follow‐up, patient neurological condition slightly improved. This report suggests the importance of investigating mitochondrial function and, in particular, muscle CoQ10 levels, in patients with adult‐onset cerebellar ataxia. Moreover, clinical stabilization by CoQ10 supplementation emphasizes the importance of an early diagnosis.
