Using the high-resolution Q3D magnetic spectrograph at the Maier-Leibnitz Laboratory (MLL) Tandem accelerator in Munich, we studied 0+ excitations in the mercury isotopes 198Hg, 200Hg, and 202Hg ...after two-neutron transfer. We only observed 4-6 excited 0+ states per nucleus up to about 3-MeV excitation energy, far fewer than in other experiments of this (p, t) campaign. The results reveal a sharp drop in the number of low-lying 0+ states towards the 208Pb shell closure. We discuss the low-energy 0+ state density as a function of the valence nucleon number Nval. The 0+ excitation energies and the measured (p, t) transfer cross sections indicate a structural change throughout the Hg isotopes, with the most notable result being the peaking in the cross section of the low-lying excited 02+ state in 200Hg.

Background Total hip arthroplasty is a successful treatment for hip osteoarthritis. Primary and secondary implant fixation is dependent on implant design and plays an important role in the longevity ...of an implant. In this study, we assessed the self-locking cementless Master.sup.SL femoral stem. Materials and methods In this single-centre prospective study, 50 consecutive hips with the indication for total hip arthroplasty, who met the inclusion criteria, received the Master.sup.SL stem from LIMA Corporate. Patients had pre- and post-operative clinical and radiological assessment and completed patient-reported outcome measures Oxford Hip Score (OHS), Harris Hip Score (HHS) and Forgotten Joint Score (FJS) at the 6-week and 6-, 12- and 24-month mark. Post-operative X-rays were assessed for osteointegration (Engh Score), alignment and subsidence. Results After 2 years, aseptic survival was 100%. One hip had to be explanted due to early deep infection and was excluded from the study. At 2 years, the patients reported a significant improved HHS and OHS of 95.3 ± 5.8 and 46.1 ± 3.6 (mean ± standard deviation), respectively, compared to preoperatively. The mean ± standard deviation for the FJS was 86.4 ± 18.7 with two-thirds of the patients reporting a score above 85. The mean Engh score is 15.1 ± 5.9 (mean ± standard deviation) with no patient scoring below 1 which suggests good osteointegration in all femoral stems. Conclusions The Master.sup.SL femoral stem performed well in this short-term follow-up study, with high patient satisfaction and good signs of osteointegration. Long-term follow-up will be necessary to evaluate longevity. Level of evidence Level 3, Prospective cohort study. A gas analyzer has been developed for the internal polarized target of the HERMES experiment at DESY in order to determine the relative amount of atomic and molecular hydrogen or deuterium in a gas ...sample. The precise quantitative knowledge of this ratio is crucial because the nucleons in atoms and molecules contribute differently to the average nuclear polarization of the target gas. A new calibration technique used to derive the relative sensitivity to atoms and molecules is presented. As an example, it is shown how the gas analyzer is used within the HERMES environment to divide the molecules in the gas sample into an unpolarized and a potentially polarized fraction.
Single crystals of the binary CeSi
2 and selected ternary RE
2TMSi
3 (RE=Ce, Tb, Dy; TM=Pd, Co, Ni) compounds were grown by vertical floating zone melting both with RF induction heating and optical ...heating. The compounds exhibit congruent melting behaviour at a composition different from the stoichiometric one. Accordingly, inferior element segregation along the crystal axis was detected. A silicothermic reaction during the growth process serves for melt refining with respect to the oxygen content and crystals practically free of oxide inclusions. The anisotropy of magnetic ordering and the magnetoresistance of selected single-crystalline ternary compounds is briefly described.
The fission probability of 236U as a function of the excitation energy has been measured with high energy resolution using the 235U(d, pf) reaction in order to study hyperdeformed (HD) rotational ...bands. Rotational band structures with a moment of inertia of θ=217±38 ℏ2/MeV have been observed, corresponding to hyperdeformed configurations. From the level density of the rotational bands the excitation energy of the ground state in the third minimum was determined to be 2.7±0.4 MeV.
The excitation energy of the lowest hyperdeformed transmission resonance and the energy dependence of the fission isomer population probability enabled the determination of the height of the inner fission barrier EA=5.05±0.20 MeV and its curvature parameter ℏωA=1.2 MeV. Using this new method the long-standing uncertainties in determining the height of the inner potential barrier in uranium isotopes could be resolved.
