We consider an algebraic representation that is useful for matrices with off-diagonal blocks of low numerical rank. A fast and stable solver for linear systems of equations in which the coefficient ...matrix has this representation is presented. We also present a fast algorithm to construct the hierarchically semiseparable representation in the general case.

Objective: Previous studies have shown that progesterone receptor membrane component 1 (PGRMC1) expressed in breast cancer tissue can predict a worse prognosis for breast cancer patients. Moreover, ...we demonstrated that PGRMC1 can increase the proliferation of progestogens. However, the role of PGRMC1 in terms of estrogen-induced proliferation and comparing different estrogens is still unclear.
Methods: Non-transfected and PGRMC1-transfected T-47D cells were stimulated with estradiol (E2), with equilin (EQ), or with ethinylestradiol (EE) at 1, 10, and 100 nmol/l. Increase of proliferation was compared with a control (without estrogens) and with the estrogen-induced stimulation in empty vector cells vs. PGRMC1-transfected cells.
Results: The empty vector cells showed significant proliferation (12-15%) with all three estrogens only at the highest concentration, with no relevant differences between the estrogens. PGRMC1-transfected cells showed about three-fold higher proliferation (29-66%), whereby E2 elicited the strongest and EE the lowest proliferating effects, significantly lower compared to E2 and also compared to EQ. No significant differences were seen between E2 and EQ.
Conclusions: PGRMC1 increases strongly the estrogen-dependent breast cell proliferation. The proliferating effects of EE may be lower compared to E2 and EQ. This could have importance in comparing hormone therapy and contraception. Thus, PGRMC1 not only could predict the risk using progestogens but also of different estrogens.

Clarifying the formation mechanism of single-atom sites guides the design of emerging single-atom catalysts (SACs) and facilitates the identification of the active sites at atomic scale. Herein, a ...molten-salt atomization strategy is developed for synthesizing zinc (Zn) SACs with temperature universality from 400 to 1000/1100 °C and an evolved coordination from Zn-N2Cl2 to Zn-N4. The electrochemical tests and in situ attenuated total reflectance-surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy confirm that the Zn-N4 atomic sites are active for electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion to carbon monoxide (CO). In a strongly acidic medium (0.2 m K2SO4, pH = 1), the Zn SAC formed at 1000 °C (Zn1NC) containing Zn-N4 sites enables highly selective CO2 electroreduction to CO, with nearly 100% selectivity toward CO product in a wide current density range of 100-600 mA cm-2. During a 50 h continuous electrolysis at the industrial current density of 200 mA cm-2, Zn1NC achieves Faradaic efficiencies greater than 95% for CO product. The work presents a temperature-universal formation of single-atom sites, which provides a novel platform for unraveling the active sites in Zn SACs for CO2 electroreduction and extends the synthesis of SACs with controllable coordination sites.
ABSTRACT
We present the results of new radio observations carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array C-configuration at 5.5 GHz for a sample of southern narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies ...(NLS1s). This work increases the number of known radio-detected NLS1s in the Southern hemisphere, and confirms that the radio emission of NLS1s is mainly concentrated in a central region at kpc-scale and only a few sources show diffuse emission. In radio-quiet NLS1s, the radio luminosity tends to be higher in steep-spectrum sources and be lower in flat-spectrum sources, which is opposite to radio-loud NLS1s. This may be because the radio emission of steep NLS1s is dominated by misaligned jets, active galactic nucleus driven outflows, or star formation superposing on a compact core. Instead the radio emission of flat NLS1s may be produced by a central core that has not yet developed radio jets and outflows. We discover new NLS1s harbouring kpc-scale radio jets and confirm that a powerful jet does not require a large-mass black hole to be generated. We also find sources dominated by star formation. These NLS1s could be new candidates in investigating the radio emission of different mechanisms.
Cu-based catalysts have been identified as the most promising candidates for generation of C2+ products in electrochemical CO
reduction reaction. Defect engineering in catalysts is a widely employed ...strategy for promoting C-C coupling on Cu. However, comprehensive understanding of defect structure-to-activity relationship has not been obtained. In this study, controllable defects generation is achieved, which leads to a series of Cu-based catalysts with various phase mixing degrees. It is observed that the Faradaic efficiency toward C2+ products increases with the phase mixing degree, reaching 81 % at maximum. In situ infrared absorption spectroscopy reveals that the catalysts with higher phase mixing degree tend to form *CO more easily and possess higher retention of *CO under high overpotential window, thereby promoting C-C coupling. This work sheds new light on the relationship between defects and C-C coupling, and the rational developed of more advanced Cu-base catalysts.
Objective
To investigate the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) risk and related risk factors among children and adolescents of Hong Kong with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P).

Retrospective survey study adopting three questionnaires, obstructive sleep apnea-18 (OSA-18), pediatric sleep questionnaire-22 (PSQ-22), and modified Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS).
Settings
Multicenter study in two public hospitals.
Patients
A total of 351 Chinese children and adolescents with non-syndromic CL/P (6-18-year-old, 57% males) visited between September 2017 and November 2019, with primary palatal repair surgery done before 3-year-old.
Main Outcome Measure
Positive OSAS risk was determined based on cut-off ≥60 for OSA-18, ≥8 for PSQ-22, and >8 for ESS. Age, sex, overweight presence, cleft type, embryonic secondary palate involvement, palatal repair surgery, palatal revision surgery, and orthodontic treatment were analyzed as possible risk factors.
Results
A total of 9.5% of patients had positive OSAS risk based on OSA-18, 13.6% based on PSQ-22, and 13.2% according to ESS. A higher prevalence of patients with positive OSAS risk was of younger age (OSA-18, p = .034), had cleft involving embryonic secondary palate (PSQ-22, p = .009), and history of fixed orthodontic treatment (ESS, p = .002). The regression model identified only involvement of embryonic secondary palate as a risk factor (PSQ-22, odds ratio = 3.7, p = .015).
Conclusions
OSAS risk among children and adolescents of Hong Kong with CL/P was 9.5% to 13.6%. Patients at higher risk were those with cleft involving embryonic secondary palate. OSAS risk assessment may be influenced by different aspects of the disease spectrum, and a multimodal approach should be considered for such assessment.
Nanoscale optical writing using far-field super-resolution methods provides an unprecedented approach for high-capacity data storage. However, current nanoscale optical writing methods typically rely ...on photoinitiation and photoinhibition with high beam intensity, high energy consumption, and short device life span. We demonstrate a simple and broadly applicable method based on resonance energy transfer from lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles to graphene oxide for nanoscale optical writing. The transfer of high-energy quanta from upconversion nanoparticles induces a localized chemical reduction in graphene oxide flakes for optical writing, with a lateral feature size of ~50 nm (1/20th of the wavelength) under an inhibition intensity of 11.25 MW cm
Upconversion resonance energy transfer may enable next-generation optical data storage with high capacity and low energy consumption, while offering a powerful tool for energy-efficient nanofabrication of flexible electronic devices.
Objective:
To test the reliability of the modified Huddart-Bodenham (MHB) numerical scoring system and its agreement with the GOSLON Yardstick categorization for assessing the dental arch ...relationships in unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) cases.
Design:
A retrospective study.
Setting:
Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong.
Patients:
Forty-one nonsyndromic UCLP consecutive patients attending the Joint Cleft Lip/Palate Clinic at Faculty of Dentistry in the University of Hong Kong were selected.
Interventions:
Study models at 8 to 10 years old (T1) and 10 to 12 years old (T2) were obtained from each patient.
Main Outcome Measures:
Models were rated with the MHB scoring system and GOSLON Yardstick index. The intra- and interexaminer reliabilities as well as correlation of both scoring systems were evaluated. Furthermore, to investigate the outcome measurements consistency, the MHB scoring system and GOSLON Yardstick were independently used to compare the dental arch relationships from T1 to T2, with the samples split into intervention and nonintervention groups.
Results:
The MHB scoring system presented good intra- and interexaminer agreement, which were comparable to those of the GOSLON Yardstick. The correlation between the MHB scoring system and GOSLON Yardstick scores was good. Both scoring systems showed similar results when assessing the change in the dental arch relationships from T1 to T2.
Conclusions:
The MHB scoring system can be used as an alternative method to the commonly used GOSLON Yardstick for assessing dental deformities in UCLP patients. Both scoring systems showed similar results in assessing the improvement in dental arch relationships.
The stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) gene has been investigated in depth in ruminants because of its effect on milk fat composition. In river buffalo, the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) g.133A>C ...in the gene promoter has been associated with milk quality and yield. However, the biological reason for such effects remains unexplored. In this study, we combined mRNA profile analysis, an electromobility shift assay, and quantitative PCR to elucidate the role of this SNP on gene transcription and its effects on milk fat traits. A preliminary genotyping of g.133A>C was carried out on a group of 303 river buffaloes to choose individuals for the downstream applications. Analysis of allele frequencies showed an increase in the minor allele C (0.25) compared with previous findings (0.16). Six animals (2 for each genotype) were chosen for cloning and 216 positive cDNA recombinant clones for SCD (72 per genotype) were analyzed by PCR. All clones showed the same length on agarose gel; therefore, random clones were chosen for sequencing. No qualitative differences were found and all gene transcripts assembled correctly. An electrophoretic mobility shift assay was performed to evaluate the binding of the transcription factor Sp1 to DNA sequences including g.133A>C. Genotype CC showed a higher binding (mean ± standard error of the mean) than genotype AA in 2 different conditions Enzo buffer (EB), Enzo Life Science Inc., Farmingdale, NY: 201.77 ± 4.06 vs. 141.65 ± 3.77 band intensity values and Poletto buffer (PB): 95.90 ± 1.15 vs. 67.30 ± 2.14 band intensity values. The subsequent quantitative PCR confirmed the upregulation of the CC genotype compared with the AA and AC genotypes. The association study with milk fat traits revealed a favorable effect of allele C. The heterozygous genotype had the highest values for monounsaturated fatty acids, oleic acid (C18:1 cis-9), polyunsaturated fatty acids, and odd- and branched-chain fatty acids, and the lowest values for saturated fatty acids and atherogenic and thrombogenic indices; the heterozygous genotype differed significantly from the AA genotype. The AC genotype has previously been associated with higher milk yield. Therefore, the g.133A>C SNP is a marker with dual effects and is an interesting candidate for assisted selection programs in river buffalo. These data clarified the biological role of the SNP g.133A>C in the SCD promoter and how it affects gene function, providing important knowledge on the genetic background of lipid metabolism, including the future possibility of selecting alleles with quantitatively or qualitatively favorable effects.
