Straw and sawdust are commonly used bulking agents in sludge composting or bio-drying. It is important to determine if they contribute to the biodegradable volatile solids pool. A sludge bio-drying ...process was performed in this study using straw, sawdust and their combination as the bulking agents. The results revealed that straw has substantial biodegradation potential in the aerobic process and sawdust has poor capacity to be degraded. The temperature profile and bio-drying efficiency were highest in the trial that straw was added, as indicated by a moisture removal ratio and VS loss ratio of 62.3 and 31.0%, respectively. In separate aerobic incubation tests, straw obtained the highest oxygen uptake rate (OUR) of 2.14 and 4.75 mg O
2 g
−1VS h
−1 at 35 °C and 50 °C, respectively, while the highest OUR values of sludge were 12.1 and 5.68 mg O
2 g
−1VS h
−1 at 35 °C and 50 °C and those of sawdust were 0.286 and 0.332 mg O
2 g
−1VS h
−1, respectively. The distribution of biochemical fractions revealed that soluble fractions in hot water and hot neutral detergent were the main substrates directly attacked by microorganisms, which accounted for the initial OUR peak. The cellulose-like fraction in straw was transformed to soluble fractions, resulting in an increased duration of aerobic respiration. Based on the potential VS degradation rate, no bio-generated heat was contributed by sawdust, while that contribution by straw was about 41.7% and the ratio of sludge/straw was 5:1 (w/w, wet basis).
► Sludge bio-drying is an approach of biomass energy utility. ► Focuses on the biodegradation extent of bulking agents during composting or bio-drying. ► The sludge, straw and sawdust were incubated separately under an aerobic condition. ► Straw presented strong degradability while sawdust showed poor biodegradation. ► Contribution of bio-generated heat by straw was ca 41.7% for improving bio-drying.
In previous work we presented design and manufacturing rules for optimizing the energy density of piezoelectric bimorph actuators through the use of laser-induced melting, insulating edge coating, ...and features for rigid ground attachments to maximize force output, as well as a pre-stacked technique to enable mass customization. Here we adapt these techniques to bending actuators with four active layers, which utilize thinner material layers. This allows the use of lower operating voltages, which is important for overall power usage optimization, as typical small-scale power supplies are low-voltage and the efficiency of boost-converter and drive circuitry increases with decreasing output voltage. We show that this optimization results in a 24%-47% reduction in the weight of the required power supply (depending on the type of drive circuit used). We also present scaling arguments to determine when multi-layer actuator are preferable to thinner actuators, and show that our techniques are capable of scaling down to sub-mg weight actuators.
ABSTRACT
Analysis of observational and reanalysis data shows that the autumn precipitation in South China is closely related to the east–west sea surface temperature (SST) contrast in the tropical ...Pacific. An east–west contrast (EWC) index, defined as the difference of the normalized area‐averaged SST between the tropical eastern Pacific (150°W–90°W, 5°S–5°N) and the tropical western Pacific (WP; 110°E–180°E, 5°S–5°N), is proposed to delineate this feature. When the EWC index is positive, the tropical eastern (western) Pacific is warmer (colder) than normal. It would cause significant southerly wind anomalies from the Indochina Peninsula to eastern China, leading to enhanced water vapour convergence and anomalous ascending motion over South China. Therefore, enhanced autumn precipitation is observed in South China. Further analysis suggests that the SST of the tropical WP dominates the lower‐tropospheric meridional wind and the resultant water vapour transport and convergence over subtropical East Asia, and that the SST of both the tropical eastern and the tropical WP contributes to the anomalous ascending motions over South China. These results highlight the combined effects of tropical eastern and WP on the autumn precipitation in South China and specifically emphasize the role of tropical WP SST. Given the performance of the EWC index in describing the autumn precipitation as well as the leading time and the persistence of the EWC index, it could be used as a good indicator in the monitoring and prediction of the autumn precipitation in South China, which is demonstrated by a simple statistical prediction model.
Abstract
Background
This study aimed to identify an initial screening tool for congenital ectopia lentis (CEL) by comparing ocular biological parameters in children with myopia.
Methods
A ...retrospective case-control study was conducted at one tertiary referral centre, from October 2020 to June 2022. Axial length (AL), corneal curvature (CC), refractive astigmatism (RA), corneal astigmatism (CA), internal astigmatism (IA), the difference between the axis of RA and CA AXIS(RA-CA), white-to-white corneal diameter (WTW), and axial length-corneal radius ratio (AL/CR) were compared in 28 eyes of CEL patients, and 60 eyes of myopic patients matched for age and refraction. The spherical equivalent of each eye was < -3.00 D. Area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curves were calculated.
Results
The differences in RA, AL, mean keratometry (Kmed), maximum keratometry (Kmax), minimum keratometry (Kmin), CA, IA, AXIS(RA-CA), WTW, and AL/CR between the CEL and myopic groups were statistically significant (p < 0.05; p < 0.001; p < 0.001; p < 0.001; p < 0.001; p < 0.05; p < 0.001; p < 0.001; p < 0.001; p < 0.001, respectively). In logistic regression analysis RA, IA, AXIS(RA-CA), and AL/CR were significantly associated with CEL (p < 0.05). AUCs for RA, IA, AXIS(RA-CA), and AL/CR were 0.694, 0.853, 0.814, and 0.960, respectively. AUCs for AL/CR in SE< -6.00 D subgroup was 0.970, and 0.990 in -6.00 D ≤ SE < -3.00 D group. An AL/CR < 3.024 was the optimal cut-off point differentiating the CEL and control groups (sensitivity, 92.9%; specificity, 88.30%).
Conclusions
A smaller AL/CR could identify CEL in children with myopia. An AL/CR cut-off value of 3.024 may be the most sensitive and specific parameter for the differential diagnosis of CEL in patients with mild to high myopia.
Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a typical cold-water aquaculture fish and a high-end aquatic product. When water temperature exceeds its optimal range of 12–18 °C, the immune system of rainbow ...trout becomes weakened and unbalanced. High temperature in summer and global warming severely impact rainbow trout industry. The focus of this study was to explore the mechanisms regulating the immune response of rainbow trout under high temperature stress and identify molecular elements that account for resistance to high temperature. In this study, individual fish were screened in a high temperature stress experiment and divided into resistant (R) and sensitive (S) groups. The hepatic transcriptome sequencing and analysis of mRNAs and microRNAs of the R, S, and control groups showed that the number of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the S group (9259) was higher than that in the R group (5313). Furthermore, the 1233 genes differentially expressed between S and R groups were mainly enriched in immune-related pathways, including cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, TNF signaling and IL-17 signaling. Among these DEGs were miR-301b-5p and its target gene that encodes nuclear factor of activated T cells two interacting protein (nfatc2ip). The dual-luciferase reporter system and immunofluorescence experiments verified the relationship between miR-301b-5p and nfatc2ip. We also showed that expression levels of miR-301b-5p and nfatc2ip significantly negatively correlated in the liver of rainbow trout under high temperature stress. By performing functional experiments, we showed that activation of miR-301b-5p expression or inhibition of nfatc2ip expression stimulated the phosphorylation of p65, p38, and JNK in the classical nuclear factor kappa-B and mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways under high temperature stress. These manipulations initially promoted the secretion of the pro-inflammatory factor IL-1β and then increased the levels of IL-6, IL-12, and TNF-α. In addition, activation of miR-301b-5p expression or inhibition of nfatc2ip expression stimulated the repair of the hepatic ultrastructural damage caused by high temperature stress by activating the inflammatory response in rainbow trout liver.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most common type of genetic variations in humans and play a major role in the genetics of human phenotype variation and the genetic basis of human ...complex diseases. Recently, there is considerable interest in understanding the possible role of the CYP11B2 gene with corticosterone methyl oxidase deficiency, primary aldosteronism, and cardio-cerebro-vascular diseases. Hence, the elucidation of the function and molecular dynamic behavior of CYP11B2 mutations is crucial in current genomics. In this study, we investigated the pathogenic effect of 51 nsSNPs and 26 UTR SNPs in the CYP11B2 gene through computational platforms. Using a combination of SIFT, PolyPhen, I-Mutant Suite, and ConSurf server, four nsSNPs (F487V, V129M, T498A, and V403E) were identified to potentially affect the structure, function, and activity of the CYP11B2 protein. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulation and structure analyses also confirmed the impact of these nsSNPs on the stability and secondary properties of the CYP11B2 protein. Additionally, utilizing the UTRscan, MirSNP, PolymiRTS and miRNASNP, three SNPs in the 3'UTR region were predicted to exhibit a pattern change in the upstream open reading frames (uORF), and eight microRNA binding sites were found to be highly affected due to 3'UTR SNPs. This cataloguing of deleterious SNPs is essential for narrowing down the number of CYP11B2 mutations to be screened in genetic association studies and for a better understanding of the functional and structural aspects of the CYP11B2 protein.

As the application of deep learning continues to grow, so does the amount of data used to make predictions. While traditionally big-data deep learning was constrained by computing performance and ...off-chip memory bandwidth, a new constraint has emerged: privacy. One solution is homomorphic encryption (HE). Applying HE to the client-cloud model allows cloud services to perform inferences directly on clients' encrypted data. While HE can meet privacy constraints it introduces enormous computational challenges and remains impractically slow on current systems. This paper introduces Cheetah, a set of algorithmic and hardware optimizations for server-side HE DNN inference. Cheetah proposes HE-parameter tuning and operator scheduling optimizations, which together deliver up to 79 \times speedup over the state-of-the-art. However, HE inference still falls short of real-time inference speeds by nearly four orders of magnitude. Cheetah further proposes an accelerator architecture to understand the degree of speedup hardware can provide and whether it can bridge HE's real-time performance gap. We evaluate several DNNs and find that privacy-preserving HE inference for ResNet50 can approach real-time speeds with a 587mm 2 accelerator dissipating 30W in 5nm.
iPTF14hls is an unusually bright, long-lived II-P supernova (SN), whose light curve has at least five peaks. We propose that the outflows from the black hole hyperaccretion systems in the center of ...the collapsars should continuously inject into the envelope. For a jet-driven core-collapsar model, the outflow feedback results in prolonging the accretion timescale and fluctuating accretion rates in our analytic solutions. Thus, the long period of luminous, varying SN iPTF14hls might originate from the choked jets, which are regulated by the feedback of the strong disk outflows in a massive core-collapsar. One can expect that jet-driven iPTF14hls may last no more than approximately 3,000 days, and the luminosity may quickly decrease in the later stages. Moreover, the double-peak light curves in some SNe might be explained by the outflow feedback mechanism.
