The major risk factors for acute hepatitis B (AHB) in China and the viral factors determining the progression from acute to chronic hepatitis B remain largely unknown.
Epidemiological studies within ...a population-based surveillance for AHB in adults were performed in Shanghai, China, including 294 patients, 588 matched controls and 572 family members of the patients.
Invasive medical procedures, household contact with hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers, body care and beauty treatments, and lack of HBV vaccination were independently associated with AHB. Among those risks, pedicure in bath centres emerged. Sixty-eight of 128 patients with AHB were genotyped including 33 with HBV B2 and 35 with HBV C2. Twenty-five (8.50%) of the 294 patients, including 20 with HBV C2 and 5 with HBV B2 (p = 0.013), progressed to chronic infection. Multivariate analysis showed that HBV C2 was independently associated with chronicification of AHB. Patients with HBV B2 were younger and there was a higher proportion of women than those with HBV C2. The prevalence of HBV B2 was higher in the patients than in neighbourhood chronic carriers. The chronic carriers with HBV B2 showed higher viral loads, higher hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) seropositivity, and with higher proportion in men than those with HBV C2, implying that sexual contact plays a role in the transmission of HBV B2. Phylogenetic analysis showed that HBV C2 was frequently involved in transmissions within households.
Despite lower viral load and HBeAg status in the chronic carriers, HBV C2 was more prone to causing chronic infection than was HBV B2.
Numerically investigation of natural convection within a differentially heated modified square enclosure with sinusoidally corrugated side walls has been performed for different values of Rayleigh ...number. The fluid inside the enclosure considered is air and is quiescent, initially. The top and bottom surfaces are flat and considered as adiabatic. Results reveal three main stages: an initial stage, a transitory or oscillatory stage and a steady stage for the development of natural convection flow inside the corrugated cavity. The numerical scheme is based on the finite element method adapted to triangular non-uniform mesh element by a non-linear parametric solution algorithm. Investigation has been performed for the Rayleigh number, Ra ranging from 105 to 108 with variation of corrugation amplitude and frequency. Constant physical properties for the fluid medium have been assumed except for the density where Boussinesq’s approximation has been considered. Results have been presented in terms of the isotherms, streamlines, temperature plots, average Nusselt numbers, traveling waves and thermal boundary layer thickness plots, temperature and velocity profiles. The effects of sudden differential heating and its consequent transient behavior on fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics have been observed for the range of governing parameters. The present results show that the transient phenomena are greatly influenced by the variation of the Rayleigh number with corrugation amplitude and frequency.
Hong Kong employed a strategy of intermittent public health and social measures alongside increasingly stringent travel regulations to eliminate domestic SARS-CoV-2 transmission. By analyzing 1899 ...genome sequences (>18% of confirmed cases) from 23-January-2020 to 26-January-2021, we reveal the effects of fluctuating control measures on the evolution and epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 lineages in Hong Kong. Despite numerous importations, only three introductions were responsible for 90% of locally-acquired cases. Community outbreaks were caused by novel introductions rather than a resurgence of circulating strains. Thus, local outbreak prevention requires strong border control and community surveillance, especially during periods of less stringent social restriction. Non-adherence to prolonged preventative measures may explain sustained local transmission observed during wave four in late 2020 and early 2021. We also found that, due to a tight transmission bottleneck, transmission of low-frequency single nucleotide variants between hosts is rare.
The atmospheric particles from different sources, and the therapeutic particles from various drug delivery devices, exhibit a complex size distribution, and the particles are mostly polydisperse. The ...limited available in vitro, and the wide range of in silico models have improved understanding of the relationship between monodisperse particle deposition and therapeutic aerosol transport. However, comprehensive polydisperse transport and deposition (TD) data for the terminal airways is still unavailable. Therefore, to benefit future drug therapeutics, the present numerical model illustrates detailed polydisperse particle TD in the terminal bronchioles for the first time. Euler-Lagrange approach and Rosin-Rammler diameter distribution is used for polydisperse particles. The numerical results show higher deposition efficiency (DE) in the right lung. Specifically, the larger the particle diameter (d
> 5 μm), the higher the DE at the bifurcation area of the upper airways is, whereas for the smaller particle (d
< 5 μm), the DE is higher at the bifurcation wall. The overall deposition pattern shows a different deposition hot spot for different diameter particle. These comprehensive lobe-specific polydisperse particle deposition studies will increase understanding of actual inhalation for particle TD, which could potentially increase the efficiency of pharmaceutical aerosol delivery at the targeted position of the terminal airways.
We address a multi-skill project scheduling problem for IT product development in this article. The goal is for product development managers to be able to generate an initial schedule at an early ...stage of development activities. Due to the complexity of the product structure and functionality, an IT product development effort is divided into multiple projects. Each project includes several tasks, and each task must be completed by an employee who has mastered a certain skill to complete it. A pool of multi-skilled employees is available, and the employees' skill efficiencies are influenced by both learning and forgetting phenomena. Based on the real-world demands of product development managers, three objectives are simultaneously considered: skill efficiency gain, product development cycle time and costs. To solve this problem, we propose a multi-objective non-linear mixed integer programming model. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II)is designed to generate an approximation to the optimal Pareto front of this NP-hard multi-objective optimisation problem. The algorithm produces feasible schedules for all the development projects using the serial schedule generation scheme. We adopt penalty values and individual employee adjustments to address resource conflicts and constraint violations. A weighted ideal point method is used to select the final solution from the approximate Pareto solution set. An application case of a new electrical energy saving product implementation in a leading electrical device company in China is used to illustrate the proposed model and algorithm.
Numerical modelling has emerged as a powerful and effective tool to study various dynamic behaviours of biological matter. Such numerical modelling tools have contributed to the optimisations of food ...drying parameters leading to higher quality end-products in the field of food engineering. In this context, one of the most recent developments is the meshfree-based numerical models, which have demonstrated enhanced capabilities to model cellular deformations during drying, providing many benefits compared to conventional grid-based modelling approaches. However, the potential extension of this method for simulating bulk level tissues has been a challenge due to the increased requirement for higher computational time and resources. As a solution for this, by incorporating meshfree features, a novel coarse-grained multiscale numerical model is proposed in this work to predict bulk level (macroscale) deformations of food-plant tissues during drying. Accordingly, realistic simulation of morphological changes of apple tissues can now be performed with just 2% of the previous computational time in microscale and macroscale simulations can also be conducted. Compared to contemporary multiscale models, this modelling approach provides more convenient computational implementation as well. Thus, this novel approach can be recommended for efficiently and accurately simulating morphological changes of cellular materials undergoing drying processes, while confirming its potential future expansion to efficiently and accurately predict morphological changes of heterogeneous plant tissues in different spatial scales.
The design and force interaction field of coarse-grained multiscale model to study the morphological behaviour of plant tissues during drying.
This study is concerned with transient natural convection in an isosceles triangular enclosure subject to non-uniformly cooling at the inclined surfaces and uniformly heating at the base. The ...numerical simulations of the unsteady flows over a range of Rayleigh numbers and aspect ratios are carried out using Finite Volume Method. Since the upper inclined surfaces are linearly cooled and the bottom surface is heated, the flow is potentially unstable. It is revealed from the numerical simulations that the transient flow development in the enclosure can be classified into three distinct stages; an early stage, a transitional stage, and a steady stage. The flow inside the enclosure depends significantly on the governing parameters, Rayleigh number and aspect ratio. The effect of Rayleigh number and aspect ratio on the flow development and heat transfer rate are discussed. The key finding for this study is to analyze the pitchfork bifurcation of the flow about the geometric center line. The heat transfer through the roof and the ceiling as a form of Nusselt number is reported in this study.
In this work, a numerical model that enables simulation of the deformation and flow behaviour of differently aged Red Blood Cells (RBCs) is developed. Such cells change shape and decrease in ...deformability as they age, thus impacting their ability to pass through the narrow capillaries in the body. While the body filters unviable cells from the blood naturally, cell aging poses key challenges for blood stored for transfusions. Therefore, understanding the influence RBC morphology and deformability have on their flow is vital. While several existing models represent young Discocyte RBC shapes well, a limited number of numerical models are developed to model aged RBC morphologies like Stomatocytes and Echinocytes. The existing models are also limited to shear and stretching simulations. Flow characteristics of these morphologies are yet to be investigated. This paper aims to develop a new membrane formulation for the numerical modelling of Stomatocyte, Discocytes and Echinocyte RBC morphologies to investigate their deformation and flow behaviour. The model used represents blood plasma using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) and the RBC membrane using the discrete element method (DEM). The membrane and the plasma are coupled by the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM). Previous LBM-IBM-DEM formulations represent RBC membrane response based on forces generated from changes in the local area, local length, local bending, and cell volume. In this new model, two new force terms are added: the local area difference force and the local curvature force, which are specially incorporated to model the flow and deformation behaviour of Stomatocytes and Echinocytes. To verify the developed model, the deformation behaviour of the three types of RBC morphologies are compared to well-characterised stretching and shear experiments. The flow modelling capabilities of the method are then demonstrated by modelling the flow of each cell through a narrow capillary. The developed model is found to be as accurate as benchmark Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) approaches while being significantly more computationally efficient.
