The high activity level of Hybrid Events (HE) detected beneath the Cayambe volcano since 1989 has been more thoroughly investigated with data from a temporary array. The unusual HE spectral content ...allows separating a high-frequency signal riding on a low-frequency one, with a probable single source. HEs are interpreted as high frequency VT events, produced by the interaction between magmatic heat and an underground water system fed by thaw water from the summital glacier, which trigger simultaneous low-frequency fluid resonance in the highly fractured adjacent medium. Pure VTs are interpreted as 'aborted' HEs occurring probably in the oldest and coldest part of the volcano complex.
Results from geophysical investigations (electrical resistivity, electromagnetic mapping and seismic refraction) on an excavated cell of the Ouled Fayet (Algiers, Algeria) pilot landfill indicated ...the presence of an underground runoff and permeable soil underneath the cell. These results contradict those obtained by a feasibility study, based, however, only on the analysis of seventy-six 10-m drilling cores. The 1D boreholes information has been proven to be insufficient and to give biased results. The presence of water at depth is evidenced by lower resistivity, high conductivity anomalies and increase of P-wave velocity. Thus, to the contrary of what is claimed in the feasibility study, a threat of leachate pollution is real. This study shows that landfill construction studies cannot give trustful results without geophysical investigations. More specifically, in Algeria, it is imperative to elaborate a landfill construction code, which should include mandatory geophysical prospecting and deeper drilling cores.
This article describes an improved data acquisition system from a previous system dedicated to one-sensor site studies, aimed at recording ambient vibrations (microtremors). A multi-channel and/or ...remote triggering system is proposed. The system was conceived by IRD-Leas, France, and used at ISTerre, France, for research activities. The size, weight of this high quality system and its autonomy (no need to be connected to a laptop) make it a real portable device. The system acquires data with 24-bit delta-sigma ADCs in the 10 - 1000 sps range at 10 - 20 bit resolution on up to 18 channels in the multi-channel version. The input stage dynamics is available at plus or minus 2.5 V or plus or minus 5 V. The dynamic range varies, for example, from 108 dB at 100 sps to 90 dB at 250 sps. Gain is selectable from 1 (0 dB) to 8192 (78 dB) by powers of two (6 dB). Its very low level of internal noise allows recording of very low tension signals without missing code. Continuous recording and GPS may also be implemented in the system. While primarily dedicated to ambient vibration recordings, this system can be connected to any type of device delivering an output tension in the plus or minus 5 V range.
Les structures géologiques sont le plus souvent dessinées par interpolations de données dispersées. Un problème est de pouvoir contraindre ces interpolations par des règles géométriques et ...cinématiques. La méthode dite de l'équilibrage des structures en coupe illustre ce principe. Pour tester la compatibilité de structures à déformation hétérogène, on peut les diviser en éléments dont on considère la déformation comme homogène, mais cette technique est limitée. Une autre méthode, pour s'assurer de la compatibilité géométrique de zones plissées-faillées, consiste à tester la possibilité de restaurer de telles surfaces à leur état initial. Le principe de la méthode est de décrire ces surfaces par des éléments rigides plans et de les rabattre dans le plan horizontal par un programme de calcul (minimisation automatique de vides et de recouvrements). En dépliant différents blocs et en ajustant ces blocs le long de failles, il est possible de retrouver l'état antérieur à la déformation (continue et discontinue). Le programme (UNIX, FORTRAN, station de travail), a été initialement testé sur des exemples théoriques et expérimentaux, puis appliqué à des structures naturelles (gisements pétroliers) avec les applications suivantes: (1) en zone pétrolifère (ou minéralisée), le but est de dessiner au mieux les structures associées aux failles qui peuvent faire office de piège, ce qui permet de mieux contraindre les capacités du gisement et sa géométrie; (2) en l'utilisation plus géodynamique, le champ de déplacement fini associé à la déformation, traduite par les plis et les failles, peut être étudié.

V spectral ratio confirmed the good agreement with geological formations and showed that a second peak in some soil response appears at sites that are located over a zone of alluvial deposits, in the most damaged area of the city. This second peak is in the frequency range 5–7
Hz, close to the natural response of adobe building frequency. Thus, the second peak seems to increase the damage rate of adobe buildings and may be related to superficial alluvial deposits of a river, acting independently of the rest of the soil column.
Continuous monitoring of Cotopaxi volcano from January 1989 to September 1997 shows that it is subject to a steady shallow Long Period (LP) activity. LP events are concentrated in a column with a ...diameter of about 3 km and a height of about 12 km, between an elevation of 4 km and 8 km depth. They do not occur in swarms, nor have there been periods of complete calm. High frequency volcano‐tectonic (VT) events are mostly located on the northeastern side of the LP column, with the maximum activity of both types of events coinciding in depth. LP activity cannot be related to unrest of the volcano. The most likely explanation for the continuous occurrence of LP events beneath Cotopaxi is that they are produced by the interaction of glacier thaw water and hot material at shallow depths. The relative spatial distribution of both type of events in two adjacent zones suggest that VT and LP activities are interconnected.

The rigidity of a six-story shear-wall building, damaged by the May 21, 2003 Boumerdes earthquake (Algeria) has been evaluated before the event, in its damaged state, and after retrofitting, by ...estimating its natural frequency, damping factor, and modal shape. Pre-event parameters are estimated through a numerical analysis, based on the structure drawings, complemented by an ambient vibration investigation of an identical non-damaged building located on the same site. Parameters of the damaged and retrofitted states were obtained from ambient vibration recordings. Variations of the modal parameters, for the three states of the building, allow evaluating rigidity changes, and thus checking of both the retrofitting and strengthening of the building.
