Background and Objectives: Metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease or MASLD is the main cause of chronic liver diseases in children, and it is estimated to affect 35% of children ...living with obesity. This study aimed to identify metabolic phenotypes associated with two advanced stages of MASLD (hepatic steatosis and hepatic steatosis plus fibrosis) in Mexican children with obesity. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis derived from a randomized clinical trial conducted in children and adolescents with obesity aged 8 to 16 years. Anthropometric and biochemical data were measured, and targeted metabolomic analyses were carried out using mass spectrometry. Liver steatosis and fibrosis were estimated using transient elastography (Fibroscan® Echosens, Paris, France). Three groups were studied: a non-MASLD group, an MASLD group, and a group for MASLD + fibrosis. A partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was performed to identify the discrimination between the study groups and to visualize the differences between their heatmaps; also, Variable Importance Projection (VIP) plots were graphed. A VIP score of >1.5 was considered to establish the importance of metabolites and biochemical parameters that characterized each group. Logistic regression models were constructed considering VIP scores of >1.5, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were estimated to evaluate different combinations of variables. Results: The metabolic MASLD phenotype was associated with increased concentrations of ALT and decreased arginine, glycine, and acylcarnitine (AC) AC5:1, while MASLD + fibrosis, an advanced stage of MASLD, was associated with a phenotype characterized by increased concentrations of ALT, proline, and alanine and a decreased Matsuda Index. Conclusions: The metabolic MASLD phenotype changes as this metabolic dysfunction progresses. Understanding metabolic disturbances in MASLD would allow for early identification and the development of intervention strategies focused on limiting the progression of liver damage in children and adolescents.

Lactoferrin, a diferric-binding glycoprotein drives the abundance of some gut microbiota members, but its role under stress conditions is unknown thus this aspect was the aim of this contribution. Female BALB/c mice (n = 4/group), treated orally with lactoferrin for 7 days were either stressed by board-immobilization from the 4th-to-7th day of treatment (LS) or unstressed (L). Two groups provided with water and stressed (S) or unstressed (C) were included. On day 7, feces were collected for the massive sequencing of V4-V5 region of the 16S rDNA gene. Regarding C-group, the only significant changes were found in the L-group that showed an increased abundance in most taxa of the genus Bacteroides (Phylum Bacteroidetes) and Parasuterella (Phylum Proteobacteria) or decreased of Clostridium_XIVb (Phylum Firmicutes), Lactoferrin-associated microbiota changes may result from stress independent modulatory pathways. Data may provide experimental foundations for using lactoferrin as a therapeutic co-adjuvant for diseases like obesity with microbiome alterations.
A systematic, rational search for chalcone derivatives with multifunctional behavior has been carried out, with the support of a computer-assisted protocol (CADMA-Chem). A total of 568 derivatives ...were constructed by incorporating functional groups into the chalcone structure. Selection scores were calculated from ADME properties, toxicity, and manufacturability descriptors. They were used to select a subset of molecules (23) with the best drug-like behavior. Reactivity indices were calculated for this subset. They were chosen to account for electron and hydrogen atom donating capabilities, which are key processes for antioxidant activity. The indexes showed that four chalcone derivatives (dCHA-279, dCHA-568, dCHA-553, and dCHA-283) are better electron and H donors than the parent molecule and some reference antioxidants (Trolox, ascorbic acid, and α-tocopherol). In addition, based on molecular docking, they are predicted to act as catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) inhibitors. Therefore, these four molecules are proposed as promising candidates to act as multifunctional antioxidants with neuroprotective effects.
Introducción: En México ha aumentado la proporción de personas que realizan ejercicio y de quienes consumen suplementos nutricionales (SN), lo cual podría implicar mayor riesgo de consecuencias no ...deseables para la salud, debido a que su uso no está regulado. Estudios previos han reportado la relación del uso de SN con características sociodemográficas y la experiencia u objetivos de entrenamiento de asistentes a gimnasios, pero no con indicadores de la autopercepción de la imagen corporal.
Material y métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal con una muestra de 1.135 de adultos mexicanos de 18 a 40 años. Se indagó sobre hábitos de entrenamiento, de alimentación y de suplementación. Mediante modelos de regresión de Poisson se analizó la relación de características sociodemográficas, de entrenamiento y autopercepción de la imagen corporal con el uso de SN.
Resultados: 58,0% de los participantes fueron hombres y 42,0% fueron mujeres, 46,2% habían consumido algún SN y 35,4% lo consumía durante el estudio. Los SN más consumidos fueron bebidas deportivas (28,7%) y proteína (23,6%). El consumo de SN fue mayor en hombres, participantes de mayor edad, con más tiempo entrenando y con deterioro funcional por dismorfia muscular. Los nutricionistas fueron la tercera fuente que recomendó SN, después de entrenadores y amigos.
Conclusiones: Casi la mitad de los asistentes a gimnasios han consumido algún SN. Existen grupos que tienen mayor probabilidad de consumir SN, lo que puede requerir mayor indagación respecto a las razones que explican esto.

Este artículo documenta las diferencias en posición socioeconómica, experiencias de discriminación y autopercepción de acuerdo al color de piel en adultos mexicanos, considerando que esta última es ...un reflejo del fenotipo simbólicamente vinculado al ancestro geográfico (i. e., indígena, africano o europeo). La premisa es que en la sociedad mexicana prevalece una asociación de lo europeo con rasgos positivos (i. e., “privilegio blanco”) y lo africano e indígena con aspectos negativos, lo cual deriva en prácticas racistas. Con ese fin se analizó la Encuesta Nacional sobre Discriminación en México. Los resultados indican que, con excepciones, los blancos acceden más a la educación, se ubican en mejores ocupaciones, tienen salarios mayores, con menos frecuencia han experimentado discriminación y les gusta más su piel. Conforme la piel es más oscura, la situación es opuesta.
Introducción: El objetivo del trabajo fue examinar diferencias entre el balance energético (BEN) negativo o la baja disponibilidad energética (DEN) sobre la inflamación inducida por el ejercicio ...(IIE) y cambios de hormonas sexuales (CHS), de acuerdo con la experiencia deportiva de atletas.
Material y métodos: Fuentes de información: Se realizó una búsqueda de artículos publicados de 1986 a 2020 en las bases de datos de Medline, Science Direct, SciELO, ProQuest y EBSCOhost. Selección de estudios: Se incluyeron artículos que fueron realizados con atletas adultos sanos, con diferentes niveles de experiencia deportiva, en los que se evaluó la asociación del BEN negativo o de la DEN baja con CHS o la IIE. Evaluación y síntesis del estudio: Se identificaron 198 registros, de los cuales se analizaron 26 documentos que cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión.
Resultados: Se obtuvieron asociaciones similares entre el BEN o la DEN (evaluada directamente) con las concentraciones basales de testosterona, de FNT-α y con la presencia de amenorrea, pero no con el estradiol e IL-6. La DEN evaluada directamente, comparada con indicadores subrogados de DEN baja, se asoció con CHS en menos estudios (6 versus 11). En condiciones de reposo, atletas de alto renidimento con BEN negativo o con DEN baja, en comparación con sus contrapartes con una adecuada IE, presentaron menores concentraciones de LH y estradiol, pero no de progesterona e IL-6; aunque resultados inconsistentes sobre la testosterona, FSH, FNT-α y la presencia de amenorrea.
Conclusiones: La metodología de evaluación o interpretación del BEN o la DEN y de biomarcadores parecen determinar las inconsistencias entre los resultados. Aparentemente la experiencia deportiva puede influir en la IIE o CHS de atletas con DEN baja o BEN negativo.
Antecedentes: El conocimiento de los atributos estructurales y el hábitat de las especies son fundamentales para evaluar su estado de conservación y proponer acciones para su conservación y manejo.
...Preguntas: ¿Cuáles son los atributos estructurales de la poblacional de J. jaliscana, las características de su hábitat y los factores ambientales que podrían estar influyendo en su distribución y abundancia?
Sitio y periodo de estudio: El muestreo de campo se realizó en poblaciones de J. jaliscana en el ejido El Cuale, municipio de Talpa de Allende, Jalisco, México, en julio de 2019.
Métodos: En parcelas de 500 m2 se determinaron los atributos estructurales de la poblacional de J. jaliscana y a través de un RDA se evaluó cuales factores ambientales podrían influir en su distribución y abundancia. Se describió la composición y estructura de toda la comunidad vegetal.
Resultados: Juniperus jaliscana registró 385 ind. ha-1 y un área basal de 8.98 m2 ha-1. Las variables con mayor influencia sobre su abundancia y distribución fueron la incidencia de incendios y el pastoreo. Se registraron 119 especies, 94 géneros y 52 familias. Psidium salutare se registró por primera vez para el estado de Jalisco y se describió como especie nueva para la ciencia a Prionosciadium tamayoi.
Conclusiones: Juniperus jaliscana concentró su población en categorías diamétricas pequeñas. Los factores ambientales con mayor influencia sobre su distribución y abundancia fueron los incendios, pastoreo y condiciones de ambientes secos. Juniperus jaliscana comparte hábitat con especies endémicas al occidente de México.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of maternal cardiometabolic markers trajectories (glucose, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and ...diastolic blood pressure (DBP)) with estimated fetal weight trajectories and birth weight in Mexican pregnant women without medical complications. Cardiometabolic marker trajectories were characterized using group-based trajectory models. Mixed-effect and linear regression models were estimated to assess the association of maternal trajectories with estimated fetal weight and birth weight. The final sample comprised 606 mother-child dyads. Two trajectory groups of maternal cardiometabolic risk indicators during pregnancy were identified (high and low). Fetuses from women with higher values of TG had higher weight gain during pregnancy (
= 24.00 g; 95%CI: 12.9, 35.3), were heavier at the sixth month (
=48.24 g; 95%CI: 7.2, 89.7) and had higher birth weight (
= 89.08 g; 95%CI: 20.8, 157.4) than fetuses in the low values trajectory. Fetuses from mothers with high SBP and DBP had less weight in the sixth month of pregnancy (
= - 42.4 g; 95%CI: - 82.7, - 2.1 and
= - 50.35 g; 95%CI: - 94.2, - 6.4), and a higher DBP trajectory was associated with lower birth weight (
= - 101.48 g; 95%CI: - 176.5, - 26.4). In conclusion, a longitudinal exposition to high values of TG and BP was associated with potentially adverse effects on fetal growth. These findings support the potential modulation of children's phenotype by maternal cardiometabolic conditions in pregnancies without medical complications.
n this study, the content of lycopene, total phenolics, total flavonoids, antioxidant activity and citrulline in watermelon from different localities of the Comarca Lagunera were determined. In the ...Comarca Lagunera, watermelon is the second most important crop, representing 9% of the cultivated area at the national level, with a production value of $9,000,000. Watermelon is known to contain high contents of flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; these compounds include metabolites such as lycopene and citrulline. The determination of these components may vary according to the method of cultivation, fertilization, irrigation, and location, as well as the extraction method used. A completely randomized experimental design was used, analyzing three repetitions for each sample obtained. The data obtained in the present study varied according to the method of extraction, for lycopene (41.22 - 8.48 mg g-1 FW), citrulline (161.44 - 71.11 mg g-1 FW), flavonoids (5.05 - 0.17 mg g-1 FW) and phenolics (10.3 - 0.89 mg g-1 FW). The results indicated that there were no significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) for the effect of the variables degree of damage and locality, but there were significant differences for the extraction methods. Therefore, the ultrasound extraction method could be an alternative for the industry due to the increase of active biocompounds that can be obtained, reducing the time of obtaining, the low process costs and the contribution to a sustainable development
