This review article discusses the climate, water resources and historical droughts of Africa, drought indices, vulnerability, impact of global warming and land use for drought-prone regions in West, ...southern and the Greater Horn of Africa, which have suffered recurrent severe droughts in the past. Recent studies detected warming and drying trends in Africa since the mid 20th century. Based on the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5), both northern and southern Africa are projected to experience drying, such as decreasing precipitation, runoff and soil moisture in the 21st century and could become more vulnerable to the impact of droughts. The daily maximum temperature is projected to increase by up to 8°C (RCP8.5 of CMIP5), precipitation indices such as total wet day precipitation (PRCPTOT) and heavy precipitation days (R10 mm) could decrease, while warm spell duration (WSDI) and consecutive dry days (CDD) could increase. Uncertainties of the above long-term projections, teleconnections to climate anomalies such as ENSO and the Madden-Julian Oscillation, which could also affect the water resources of Africa, and capacity building in terms of physical infrastructure and non-structural solutions are also discussed. Given that traditional climate and hydrological data observed in Africa are generally limited, satellite data should also be exploited to fill the data gap for Africa in the future.

With the first white paper concerned with the central control of breathing, we want to celebrate the global importance of breathing research.
In mice, along with the assessment of eosinophils, lung function measurements, most commonly carried out by plethysmography, are essential to monitor the course of allergic airway inflammation, to ...examine therapy efficacy and to correlate animal with patient data. To date, plethysmography techniques either use intubation and/or restraining of the mice and are thus invasive, or are limited in their sensitivity. We present a novel unrestrained lung function method based on low-dose planar cinematic x-ray imaging (X-Ray Lung Function, XLF) and demonstrate its performance in monitoring OVA induced experimental allergic airway inflammation in mice and an improved assessment of the efficacy of the common treatment dexamethasone. We further show that XLF is more sensitive than unrestrained whole body plethysmography (UWBP) and that conventional broncho-alveolar lavage and histology provide only limited information of the efficacy of a treatment when compared to XLF. Our results highlight the fact that a multi-parametric imaging approach as delivered by XLF is needed to address the combined cellular, anatomical and functional effects that occur during the course of asthma and in response to therapy.
Global average surface temperatures are expected to rise by about 1.4-5.8°C from the present until the year 2100. This temperature increase will affect all ecosystems on earth. For shallow ...lakes--which can be either in a clear water or a turbid state--this climate change will expectedly negatively affect water transparency though the prediction is far from conclusive and experimental investigations elucidating the potential climatic effects on shallow lakes are still rare. The aim of this study was to further shape and sharpens hypotheses on the impact of climate change on shallow lakes by applying an existing and well-calibrated ecosystem model, PCLake. We focused on asymptotic model behaviour for a range of temperature and loading scenarios in a factorial design. We conclude that climate change will likely lead to decreased critical nutrient loadings. Combined with an expected increase in the external nutrient loading, this will increase the probability of a shift from a clear to a turbid state. As the model predicts a higher summer chlorophyll-a concentration, a stronger dominance of cyanobacteria during summer and a reduced zooplankton abundance due to climate change, the turbid state itself is likely to become even more severe.
Managing environmental resources under conditions of climate change and extreme climate events remains among the most challenging research tasks in the field of sustainable development. A particular ...challenge in many regions such as East Africa is often the lack of sufficiently long-term and spatially representative observed climate data. To overcome this data challenge we used a combination of accessible data sources based on station data, earth observations by remote sensing, and regional climate models. The accuracy of the Africa Rainfall Climatology version 2.0 (ARC2), Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation (CHIRP), CHIRP with Station data (CHIRPS), Observational-Reanalysis Hybrid (ORH), and regional climate models (RCMs) are evaluated against station data obtained from the respective national weather services and international databases. We did so by performing a comparison in three ways: point to pixel, point to area grid cell average, and stations' average to area grid cell average over 21 regions of East Africa: 17 in Ethiopia, 2 in Kenya, and 2 in Tanzania. We found that the latter method provides better correlation and significantly reduces biases and errors. The correlations were analysed at daily, dekadal (10 days), and monthly resolution for rainfall and maximum and minimum temperature (T.sub.max and T.sub.min) covering the period of 1983-2005. At a daily timescale, CHIRPS, followed by ARC2 and CHIRP, is the best performing rainfall product compared to ORH, individual RCMs (I-RCM), and RCMs' mean (RCMs). CHIRPS captures the daily rainfall characteristics well, such as average daily rainfall, amount of wet periods, and total rainfall. Compared to CHIRPS, ARC2 showed higher underestimation of the total (-30 %) and daily (-14 %) rainfall. CHIRP, on the other hand, showed higher underestimation of the average daily rainfall (-53 %) and duration of dry periods (-29 %). Overall, the evaluation revealed that in terms of multiple statistical measures used on daily, dekadal, and monthly timescales, CHIRPS, CHIRP, and ARC2 are the best performing rainfall products, while ORH, I-RCM, and RCMs are the worst performing products.
Heterologous expression of Kir channels offers a tool to modulate excitability of neurons which provide insight into Kir channel functions in general. Inwardly-rectifying K+ channels (Kir channels) ...are potential candidate proteins to hyperpolarize neuronal cell membranes. However, heterologous expression of inwardly-rectifying K+ channels has previously proven to be difficult. This was mainly due to a high toxicity of the respective Kir channel expression. We investigated the putative role of a predominantly glial-expressed, weakly rectifying Kir channel (Kir4.1 channel subunit; KCNJ10) in modulating electrophysiological properties of a motoneuron-like cell culture (NSC-34). Transfection procedures using an EGFP-tagged Kir4.1 protein in this study proved to have no toxic effects on NSC-34 cells. Using whole cell-voltage clamp, a substantial increase of inward rectifying K+ currents as well as hyperpolarization of the cell membrane was observed in Kir4.1-transfected cells. Na+ inward currents, observed in NSC-34 controls, were absent in Kir4.1/EGFP motoneuronal cells. The Kir4.1-transfection did not influence the NaV1.6 sodium channel expression. This study demonstrates the general feasibility of a heterologous expression of a weakly inward-rectifying K+ channel (Kir4.1 subunit) and shows that in vitro overexpression of Kir4.1 shifts electrophysiological properties of neuronal cells to a more glial-like phenotype and may therefore be a candidate tool to dampen excitability of neurons in experimental paradigms.
Exploring the inter-linkages of water, soil and waste resources and advancing an integrated management (or Nexus-) approach requires integrated modelling tools. Numerous models are available dealing ...with specific environmental processes, covering certain spatial and temporal scales and applying different mathematical process-describing relationships. However, finding and selecting the most appropriate (suite of) model(s) for a particular purpose is challenging, since current inventories do not allow any interactive filtering or model comparison. Therefore, we developed an interactive web-based platform, called Nexus Tools Platform (NTP), for inter-model comparison of existing modelling tools, which provides detailed information and allows for advanced filtering based on real-time visualizations. The alpha version of NTP (September 2015) comprises 73 models and covers a wide range of model types and environmental processes. We present selected NTP application examples for how to find and select the most appropriate modelling tools for a specific application using meta-analysis.
•Analysis of the water-soil-waste nexus requires appropriate modelling tools.•A web-based platform for interactive comparison of nexus modelling tools was set up.•The need for this platform, its development and implementation is explained.•Application examples demonstrate its functionality for selecting appropriate models.•An index to evaluate the popularity of modelling tools was developed.
An increasing diversity of public, voluntary sector and private providers offer services for the mentally ill in the ongoing process of psychiatric reform. Good service description is one important ...prerequisite for mental health service research. Aims 1) To describe service provision for the mentally ill in five European centres using the European Service Mapping Schedule (ESMS); and 2) to discuss the use of the instrument in describing service provision.
All services providing care for people with severe mental illness in five European catchment areas (in Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Copenhagen, Denmark; London, UK; Santander, Spain; Verona, Italy) were identified through various sources. The identified services were classified, and service provision was quantified in accordance with the ESMS manual. Descriptive information was obtained.
We identified from 10 to 45 different services for catchment areas of between 50,000 (Copenhagen) and 560,000 (Santander) population run by three to 16 providers. They varied in aims, staffing and functioning. Hospital and non-hospital residential services, community-based services, and social support agencies were available in all sites. There was substantial variation across centres in the range, number and activities of services. Collecting comparable data sets on all service types, particularly for day and structured activity services and outpatient and community services required substantial effort.
Operationalised description of mental health services across Europe is possible but requires further refinement.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicts increases in global average surface temperature from 1.1 to 6.4 °C for the year 2100. Here, we focus on the impact of climate warming on ...eutrophic shallow lakes in the Netherlands, using three representative lakes that cover the full range of lake sizes and depths. In these lakes, temperature has been shown to be the main determinant of hatching and growth of young-of-the-year fish. Because records of water temperature of our study lakes are incomplete, we applied an existing model to predict water temperatures from air temperatures for shallow, wind exposed and holomictic water bodies. To evaluate the implications of our results for marine systems, we also analyzed water temperature data of Marsdiep, a tidal inlet to the Waddensea. The lake water temperature model fitted equally well to all four water bodies. Applying the water temperature model to the period 1961–2006 showed an annual increase of 0.042 °C irrespective of lake size and depth. We extrapolated the consequences of lake warming for the onset of growth of larval bream and the size of young-of-the-year bream at the end of the year using an existing fish hatching and growth model. Both models were tested against data from Lake Tjeukemeer, which is intermediate in size compared to Lake Zwemlust and Lake IJsselmeer. The main conclusions of this study are that 1) there is a very tight coupling between air and water temperatures in Dutch shallow lakes, irrespective of their size, resulting in highly similar patterns of lake temperature and a direct translation of climate warming into lake warming; 2) on average water temperature has increased by 2 °C in the period 1961–2006; 3) temperature patterns in the tidal inlet showed a surprising resemblance with the lake temperature patterns, the coastal marine system essentially behaving like an extremely large lake; 4) there are, however, strong seasonal patterns in the extent of warming in a given period of the year; 5) lake warming leads to ca. 3 weeks earlier onset of growth and 20 mm larger sizes in bream during 1971–2006 under the assumption of temperature limited growth in these eutrophic ecosystems.
