TeV, this gives the order 40% enhancement of the tree level Higgs boson mass required in the MSSM to reach 125 GeV. It is conceivable that the Yukawa couplings to the singlet S, although naively blowing up close to Λ, will not spoil gauge coupling unification. In such a case the unified coupling
α
X
could be interestingly led to a value not far from unity, thus providing a possible explanation for the number of generations. The characteristic signal is an enhanced resonant production of neutral spin zero particles at LHC, that could even explain the putative diphoton resonance hinted by the recent LHC data at 750 GeV.

If some superpartners were in thermal equilibrium in the early universe, and if the lightest superpartner is a cosmologically stable gravitino, then there is a powerful upper bound on the ...scale of the superpartner masses. Typically the bound is below tens of TeV, often much lower, and has similar parametrics to the WIMP miracle.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute convened a multidisciplinary working group of hypertension researchers on December 6 to 7, 2018, in Bethesda, MD, to share current scientific knowledge ...in hypertension and to identify barriers to translation of basic into clinical science/trials and implementation of clinical science into clinical care of patients with hypertension. The goals of the working group were (1) to provide an overview of recent discoveries that may be ready for testing in preclinical and clinical studies; (2) to identify gaps in knowledge that impede translation; (3) to highlight the most promising scientific areas in which to pursue translation; (4) to identify key challenges and barriers for moving basic science discoveries into translation, clinical studies, and trials; and (5) to identify roadblocks for effective dissemination and implementation of basic and clinical science in real-world settings. The working group addressed issues that were responsive to many of the objectives of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Strategic Vision. The working group identified major barriers and opportunities for translating research to improved control of hypertension. This review summarizes the discussion and recommendations of the working group.

The small and negative value of the Standard Model Higgs quartic coupling at high scales can be understood in terms of anthropic selection on a landscape where large and negative values are ...favored: most universes have a very short-lived electroweak vacuum and typical observers are in universes close to the corresponding metastability boundary. We provide a simple example of such a landscape with a Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking scale generated through dimensional transmutation and supersymmetry softly broken at an intermediate scale. Large and negative contributions to the Higgs quartic are typically generated on integrating out the saxion field. Cancellations among these contributions are forced by the anthropic requirement of a sufficiently long-lived electroweak vacuum, determining the multiverse distribution for the Higgs quartic in a similar way to that of the cosmological constant. This leads to a statistical prediction of the Higgs boson mass that, for a wide range of parameters, yields the observed value within the 1σ statistical uncertainty of ∼ 5 GeV originating from the multiverse distribution. The strong CP problem is solved and single-component axion dark matter is predicted, with an abundance that can be understood from environmental selection. A more general setting for the Higgs mass prediction is discussed.
XIST RNA paints and induces silencing of one X chromosome in mammalian female cells, providing a powerful model to investigate long-range chromosomal regulation. This chapter focuses on events ...downstream from the spread of XIST RNA across the interphase chromosome, to consider how this large noncoding RNA interacts with and silences a whole chromosome. Several lines of evidence are summarized that point to the involvement of repeat sequences in different aspects of the X-inactivation process. Although the "repeat genome" comprises close to half of the human genome, the potential for abundant repeats to contribute to genome regulation has been largely overlooked and may be underestimated. X inactivation has the potential to reveal roles of interspersed and other repeats in the genome. For example, evidence indicates that XIST RNA acts at the architectural level of the whole chromosome to induce formation of a silent core enriched for nongenic and repetitive (Cot-1) DNA, which corresponds to the DAPI-dense Barr body. Expression of repeat RNAs may contribute to chromosome remodeling, and evidence suggests that other types of repeat elements may be involved in escape from X inactivation. Despite great progress in decoding the rest of the genome, we suggest that the repeat genome may contain meaningful but complex language that remains to be better studied and understood.
Cancer metastasis is a physical process in which tumor cells break away from the primary tumor, enter, and then exit the blood or lymph vessels, and establish secondary tumors in distant organs. ...Current clinical studies report a higher risk of cancer metastasis for diabetics than non-diabetics. However, due to complex overlapping risk factors between diabetes and cancer, the mechanism underlying this correlation is largely unknown. Elevated lifetime blood sugar levels in diabetics are known to increase glycation of collagen, causing stiffening of the ECM and connective tissue. In this study, we explored the roles of glycation of 3D collagen matrices in tumor cell invasion and migration. Using time-lapse images, we quantitatively compared the motility behavior of malignant breast tumor cells (MDA-MB-231) and co-culture spheroids (1:1 ratio of MDA-MB-231 cells with normal epithelial MCF-10A cells) embedded in glycated and non-glycated collagen matrices of various concentrations. Experimental results demonstrated that glycation increased tumor invasion within collagen matrices. More specifically, the average speed of MDA-MB-231 cells was higher in glycated collagen gels than in non-glycated collagen gels for all three gel concentrations tested. Cell spreading characterized by its diffusion coefficient or the effective spheroid radii at various time points was significantly greater in glycated collagen than in non-glycated collagen at a concentration of 3.5 mg/mL. This enhancement was moderate and less evident at lower collagen concentrations of 1.0 and 2.0 mg/mL. These results suggest a possible biomechanical link that relates to the high blood sugar level in diabetic patients and the cancer metastatic outcome.
