Selective laser melting is a promising additive manufacturing technology for manufacturing porous metallic bone scaffolds. Bone repair requires scaffolds that meet various mechanical and biological ...requirements. This paper addresses this challenge by comprehensively studying the performance of porous scaffolds. The main novelty is exploring scaffolds with different porosities, verifying various aspects of their performance and revealing the effect of their permeability on cell growth. This study evaluates the manufacturability, mechanical behaviour, permeability and biocompatibility of gyroid scaffolds. In simulations, mechanical behaviour and permeability exhibited up to 56% and 73% accuracy, respectively, compared to the experimental data. The compression and permeability experiments showed that the elastic modulus and the permeability of the scaffolds were both in the range of human bones. The morphological experiment showed that manufacturing accuracy increased with greater designed porosity, while the in vitro experiments revealed that permeability played the main role in cell proliferation. The significance of this work is improving the understanding of the effect of design parameters on the mechanical properties, permeability and cell growth of the scaffolds, which will enable the design of porous bone scaffolds with better bone-repair effects.

Serious ecological crises have emerged in the Asian Water Tower region (17 countries centered on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau), making it a major priority and challenge for Asian and even global ecological conservation efforts. Constructing a multi-leveled ecological security pattern (ESP) based on the synergies among multiple ecosystem services (ESs) for this region can enhance the structural integrity, functional stability, and spatial connectivity of ecosystems. Therefore, based on a series of GIS spatial analysis methods, the minimum cumulative resistance model, and the analytic hierarchy process, this study measured the importance of five key ESs focused by Sustainable Development Goal 15 (including water conservation, carbon sequestration, sand fixation, soil conservation, and biodiversity conservation); and took fishnet scale as data calculation unit to construct a hierarchical ESP (including three levels of ecological sources and corridors) to provide evidence-based support for identifying and prioritizing synergistic conservation actions across scales (regions, nations, and basins). Overall, the ESP included a total of 534 sources and 656 corridors. Some key conservation obstacles in the region (e.g., edge effects and several human activities) and corresponding priority actions are provided, such as integrating the ESPs into long-term planning, enhancing the conservation and the restoration of both the extent and the quality of forests (e.g., increasing tree species richness), and increasing collaboration across scales for resource mobilization and synergistic land use.
The objective of this study was to identify and evaluate the pharmacodynamic constituents of Ardisiae Japonicae Herba (AJH) for the treatment of acute lung injury (ALI). To fully analyze the chemical ...contents of various extraction solvents (petroleum ether site (PE), ethyl acetate site (EA),
-butanol site (NB), and water site (WS)) of AJH, the UPLC-Orbitrap Fusion-MS technique was employed. Subsequently, the anti-inflammatory properties of the four extracted components of AJH were assessed using the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced MH-S cellular inflammation model. The parts that exhibited anti-inflammatory activity were identified. Additionally, a technique was developed to measure the levels of specific chemical constituents in the anti-inflammatory components of AJH. The correlation between the "anti-inflammatory activity" and the constituents was analyzed, enabling the identification of a group of pharmacodynamic components with anti-inflammatory properties. ALI model rats were created using the tracheal drip LPS technique. The pharmacodynamic indices were evaluated for the anti-inflammatory active portions of AJH. The research revealed that the PE, EA, NB, and WS extracts of AJH included 215, 289, 128, and 69 unique chemical components, respectively. Additionally, 528 chemical components were discovered after removing duplicate values from the data. The EA exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity in the cellular assay. A further analysis was conducted to determine the correlation between anti-inflammatory activity and components. Seventeen components, such as caryophyllene oxide, bergenin, and gallic acid, were identified as potential pharmacodynamic components with anti-inflammatory activity. The pharmacodynamic findings demonstrated that the intermediate and high doses of the EA extract from AJH exhibited a more pronounced effect in enhancing lung function, blood counts, and lung histology in a way that depended on the dosage. To summarize, when considering the findings from the previous study on the chemical properties of AJH, it was determined that the EA contained a group of 13 constituents that primarily contributed to its pharmacodynamic effects against ALI. The constituents include bergenin, quercetin, epigallocatechingallate, and others.
A novel silica coated paper substrate is developed through a facile vacuum filtration method by using the commercially available silica particles as the coating material and corn starch as the ...adhesive agent. Unlike the commercial silica coated paper (namely grade SG81 paper), the resulting paper substrate was covered by a layer of silica particles on the top side of the paper, and no cellulosic fibers were exposed at its surface. After loading a solution sample on its surface, the coated silica particles allowed the target analytes to remain at the top side rather than penetration through the substrate. Owing to this effect and the special interactions with analytes, the as-prepared silica coated paper demonstrated superior performance in the analysis of different pesticides in milk using paper spray mass spectrometry to the uncoated filter paper and grade SG81 paper. Compared to the other two papers, paper spray analysis using the as-prepared paper improved the estimated lower limit of quantitation of seven pesticides (alachlor, acetochlor, pretilachlor, butachlor, metolachlor, napropamid and benzeneacetamide) in milk by a factor of 2 to 19-fold depending on the pesticide. This study offers a novel paper substrate for paper spray in high sensitivity analysis of target analytes in a complex foodstuff matrix without any pretreatment.
Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), a coronavirus that causes severe respiratory and gastrointestinal illness in poultry, leads to substantial economic losses. According to earlier research, IBV ...infection causes chicken macrophage HD11 cells to undergo cell apoptosis. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the IBV-activated intrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway were examined in this work. The findings demonstrate that IBV infection causes ROS to accumulate. Moreover, IBV infection decreased the mitochondrial transmembrane potential in HD11 cells, which could be blocked by ROS antioxidants (PDTC and NAC). The two antioxidants significantly affected the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax and further inhibited the activation of caspase-3 and apoptosis in HD11 cells. Additionally, IBV replication was decreased by blocking ROS accumulation. Pretreating HD11 cells with ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) prevented IBV from entering the cells and reduced the oxidative stress which IBV causes. The ability to accumulate ROS was also lost in UV-inactivated IBV. The IBV N protein induces cell apoptosis through the activation of ROS. These findings provide an explanation for the processes of IBV infection in immune cells by indicating that IBV-induced ROS generation triggers cell apoptosis in HD11 cells.
Paper spray mass spectrometry has been demonstrated to be promising for direct analysis of therapeutic drugs in dried blood spots (DBS); however, the strong hydrogen bond and van de Waals ...interactions between paper substrate and analytes containing polar functional groups (e.g., therapeutic drugs) affect greatly the elution behavior and analysis sensitivity of compounds of interest during paper spray. Herein, we developed a one-sided ZrO2 coated paper substrate through a facile vacuum filtration approach using commercial ZrO2 particles as coating material and soluble starch as adhesive agent. Owing to the unique surface properties, as-prepared ZrO2 paper substrate has been shown to have excellent performance for analysis of therapeutic drugs in DBS during paper spray mass spectrometry. In contrast to original cellulose paper substrates, improvements of 43–189-fold in lower limit of quantitation (LLOQ) were obtained for the tested drugs using ZrO2 coated paper for paper spray. In comparing with the previously reported grade SG81 paper and one-sided silica coated paper, the LLOQs of the tested drugs with as-prepared ZrO2 paper decreased 1.5–16.5-fold relative to those from the above two, revealing that ZrO2 coated paper is a good candidate for paper spray in high sensitivity analysis of therapeutic drugs in DBS.
Light-based 3D bioprinting is now employed widely to fabricate geometrically complex constructs for various biomedical applications. However, the inherent light scattering defect creates significant ...challenges in patterning dilute hydrogels to form high-fidelity structures with fine-scale features. Herein, we introduce a photoinhibiting approach that can effectively suppress the light scattering effect via a mechanism of simultaneous photoabsorption and free-radical reaction. This biocompatible approach significantly improves the printing resolution (~1.2 - ~2.1 pixels depending on swelling) and shape fidelity (geometric error less than 5%), while minimising the costly trial-and-error procedures. The capability in patterning 3D complex constructs using different hydrogels is demonstrated by manufacturing various scaffolds featuring intricate multi-sized channels and thin-walled networks. Importantly, cellularised gyroid scaffolds (HepG2) are fabricated successfully, exhibiting high cell proliferation and functionality. The strategy established in this study promotes the printability and operability of light-based 3D bioprinting systems, allowing numerous new applications for tissue engineering.
The association between obesity and asthma has been of interest, but whether the duration of asthma has an effect on obesity is still limitedly studied.
The purpose of this study was to investigate ...the association between asthma duration and obesity-related indexes, where obesity-related indexes include Body mass index (BMI) and Weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI).
Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2018 were obtained to conduct this cross-sectional study. Duration of asthma was used as the independent variable and obesity-related indexes as the response variables. Multiple linear regression was used to assess the association between the independent variable and the response variables, and subsequently smoothed curve fitting and threshold effect analysis were performed to clarify whether there was a nonlinear correlation between the independent variable and the response variables. Finally, subgroup analysis was conducted to find sensitive populations.
A total of 9170 participants were included in the analysis. Asthma duration was statistically different between the two groups when all participants were grouped by median WWI (Q1 < 11.65, Q2 ≥ 11.65) (P < 0.001), but not by median BMI (Q1 < 31.8, Q2 ≥ 31.8) (P = 0.130). There was a positive association between asthma duration and WWI β = 0.016, 95% CI (0.016, 0.017), but a negative one with BMI β = - 0.098, 95% CI (- 0.112, - 0.085), and the correlations between the independent and response variables became more pronounced with increasing asthma duration (P for trend < 0.01). In addition, there were nonlinear relationships between asthma duration with BMI and WWI (log likelihood ratio < 0.001), with the best valid inflection points for asthma duration being 2 years (with WWI as the response variable) and 3 years (with BMI as the response variable), respectively. In the subgroup analysis, the positive association between asthma duration and WWI was more pronounced in the participants who were male, aged less than 40 years, and had asthma onset before 12 years of age. In contrast, when BMI was used as the response variable, the negative association between it and asthma duration was more pronounced among participants of female, aged 60 years or older, and with asthma onset less than 12 years of age.
In US adults, asthma duration might cause changes in obesity-related indexes. Longer asthma duration might cause weight loss, but might increase the risk of abdominal obesity.
Background
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive tool to improve cognition. Relevant clinical studies are mainly focused on neurological and psychiatric diseases. However, ...cognition decline and psychiatric disorders are popular in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. We aimed to investigate the effect of TMS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on cognition test performance and to compare the changes in quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) before and after stimulation for OSA.
Methods
This study recruited 42 OSA patients diagnosed with polysomnography according to American Academy of Sleep Medicine guidelines. TMS (intermittent theta‐burst stimulation paradigm; 2 s on, 8 s off, 600 pulses*3, intermittent 15 min) was performed on the DLPFC. Cambridge Automated Neuropsychological Test Battery was used to assess cognitive performance. EEG oscillations were computed via power spectral density with MATLAB software.
Results
Real‐TMS group displayed a significant improvement in visual memory, sustain attention performance, as well as the outcome of working memory. However, the executive function of latency was changed in both groups. Furthermore, TMS resulted in a significant increase in the relative power spectral density of the theta band and beta band in the parietal, temporal, and anterior regions, respectively.
Conclusions
In summary, our findings indicate that TMS can safely modulate cortical oscillations and improve cognition in OSA patients. In the future, TMS can be utilized as an alternative treatment option to improve cognition in OSA patients.

Since 2015, an emerging infectious disease of inclusion body hepatitis and hydropericardium syndrome (IBH-HPS) has been occurred in China, which caused economic loss in poultry farming. In this ...study, we isolated four fowl adenovirus strains from flocks with an outbreak of HPS. The complete nucleotide sequence of SC-Neijiang was determined and its pathogenicity was evaluated. Phylogenetic analysis based on hexon gene revealed that all the isolates belonged to fowl adenovirus serotype 4. The full genome sequence of SC-Neijiang has a size of 43,719 bp, with 54.85% G + C content. Compared with JSJ13, 11-amino-acid deletion at the ORF29 was appeared on SC-Neijiang. In infectious experiments, 80% (16/20) birds died in intramuscular route and lesions characteristic for Hydropericardium Syndrome (HPS), while 5% (1/20) birds died in nasal route. The viral DNA was further detected by real-time PCR in several chicken organs. The highest titers were recorded in all the organs at day 5 post-infection. To our knowledge, this is first report on the prevalence of fowl adenovirus in Southwest China. This research elucidated the characteristics of genome sequence and pathogenicity of Chinese FAdV-4 strain and provided theoretical support for the prevention and control of the disease.
